SGGS pp 1184-1186, Basant M: 5, Shabads 14-21.

 

ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਘਰੁ ੧ ਇਕ ਤੁਕੇ     ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Basanṯ mėhlā 5 gẖar 1 ik ṯuke  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Basant, (ik tukey) stanzas of one line each, (ghar-u 1) to be sung to the first beat.   Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who is known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

Note: the first four Shabads below are an expression of happiness for finding Akal Purakh within though practice of Naam.

 

ਸਗਲ ਇਛਾ ਜਪਿ ਪੁੰਨੀਆ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਚਿਰੀ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ॥੧॥

Sagal icẖẖā jap punnī▫ā.  Parabẖ mele cẖirī vicẖẖunni▫ā. ||1||

 

(Sagal) all my (ichhaa) wishes (punneeaa) have been fulfilled (jap-i) with remembrance and practice of Naam, i.e. emulating Divine virtues and obeying Divine commands; (prabh-i) the Almighty (meyley) united me, after (vichhunniaa)being separated from IT (chiri) for long. 1.

 

ਤੁਮ ਰਵਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੈ ਰਵਣ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਵਿਐ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਭੋਗੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ŧum ravhu gobinḏai ravaṇ jog.  iṯ ravi▫ai sukẖ sahj bẖog. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (tum = you) human beings, (ravhu) invoke (gobindai) the Almighty, who alone (jog) is fit for (ravan) invocation; (raveeai) by invoking (jit-u) whom one (bhog-u) enjoys (sukh) comfort and (sahaj) poise. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥ ਅਪਣਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿਆ ॥੨॥

Kar kirpā naḏar nihāli▫ā.  Apṇā ḏās āp samĥāli▫ā. ||2||

 

The Almighty (kar-i kirpa) was kind to (nihaaliaa = see) cast (nadar-i) the sight of grace, i.e. graciously, (samhaalia) took care 0f/fulfilled the wish of (apna = own) IT’s (daas-u = servant) devotee (aap-i = self) on IT’s own. 2.

 

ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਰਸਿ ਬਨੀ ॥ ਆਇ ਮਿਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਖ ਧਨੀ ॥੩॥

Sej suhāvī ras banī.  Ā▫e mile parabẖ sukẖ ḏẖanī. ||3||

 

My (seyj = bed) longing mind (bani) became (suhaavi) pleasant/happy (ras-i = with taste) with joy; when (prabh) the Almighty (dhani) Master/giver of (sukh) comfort/peace (aaey) came and (miley) met me, i.e. I found within. 3.

 

ਮੇਰਾ ਗੁਣੁ ਅਵਗਣੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਚਰਣ ਪੂਜਾਰਿਆ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੪॥

Merā guṇ avgaṇ na bīcẖāri▫ā.  Parabẖ Nānak cẖaraṇ pūjārī▫ā. ||4||1||14||

 

The Almighty did not (beechaariaa) consider any (gun-u) virtue or (avgan-u) fault – was benevolent; (prabh) the Master (poojaariaa) engaged me in worship of IT’s (charan) feet, i.e. IT-self motivated me to be in IT’s care and obedience, says fifth Nanak. 4. 1. 14.

ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਗਾਇ ਗੁਨਾ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨ ਉਪਜੀ ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਾ ॥੧॥

Basanṯ mėhlā 5.  Kilbikẖ binse gā▫e gunā.  An▫ḏin upjī sahj ḏẖunā. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Basant. My (kilbikh) transgressions (binsey = destroyed) have disappeared (gaaey = singing) by praising and emulating (guna) virtues of the Almighty; and (sahj) steady (dhunaa = music) celestial music (upji = manifested) plays in my mind (andin = everyday) all the time, i.e. God is ever in my mind. 1.

 

ਮਨੁ ਮਉਲਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਸੰਗਿ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਭੇਟੇ ਨਿਤ ਰਾਤੌ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Man ma▫uli▫o har cẖaran sang.  Kar kirpā sāḏẖū jan bẖete niṯ rāṯou har nām rang. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

My (man) mind (maulio) blossomed (sang-i) in company of (charan) feet of, i.e. being under care and obedience of (har-i) the Almighty.

The Almighty (kar-i kirpa) was kind to (bhettey = caused to meet) led me to (saadhoo jan = saintly persons) the holy congregation; and I am (raatao) imbued (rang-i) with love of, i.e. motivated to live by, (naam) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਗੋੁਪਾਲ  ॥ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੨॥

Kar kirpā pargate gopāl.  Laṛ lā▫e uḏẖāre ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl. ||2||

 

(Gupaal = sustainer of the world) the Almighty (kar-i kirpa) has been kind (pragttey) to manifest within; (daiaal) the kind Master of this (deen) poor seeker, (laaey = attached, larr-i = to the scarf) caused to live by Naam, and (udhaarey) saved from temptations in the world-play to unite with IT. 2.

 

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਆ ਸਾਧ ਧੂਰਿ ॥ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥੩॥

Ih man ho▫ā sāḏẖ ḏẖūr.  Niṯ ḏekẖai su▫āmī hajūr. ||3||

 

(Ih-u = this) my (man-u) mind (hoaa) became (dhoor-i) dust of the feet, i.e. placed itself in guidance, of (saadhoo) the guru; and (nit) ever (deykhai) sees (suaami) the Master (hajoor-i) present within, i.e. does not wander anymore. 3.

 

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਗਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੫॥

Kām kroḏẖ ṯarisnā ga▫ī.  Nānak parabẖ kirpā bẖa▫ī. ||4||2||15||

 

(Kaam) lust, (krodh) anger and (trisna) craving for transitory gains/pleasures (gaee) have left me; this state has come (bhaee = happened) with (kirpa) kindness of the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 4. 2. 15.

ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਰੋਗ ਮਿਟਾਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਿ ॥ ਬਾਲਕ ਰਾਖੇ ਅਪਨੇ ਕਰ ਥਾਪਿ ॥੧॥

Basanṯ mėhlā 5.  Rog mitā▫e parabẖū āp.  Bālak rākẖe apne kar thāp. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Basant. (Prabhoo) the Almighty (aap-i = self) was kind and (mittaaey = effaced) removed (rog) the ailments; and (raakhey) saved (baalak) the child – Hargobind, son of the fifth Guru – with (apney = own) IT’s (kar = hand, thaap-i = pat) blessings. 1.

 

ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਸਦ ਬਸੰਤੁ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੀ ਆਏ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਰੂਪ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਤੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sāʼnṯ sahj garihi saḏ basanṯ.  Gur pūre kī sarṇī ā▫e kali▫āṇ rūp jap har har manṯ. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Now, it is (sad) ever (saant-i) peace, (sahaj) poise and (basant-u = spring season) happiness (grih-i) in the house/family.

This is since I (aaey = came) placed myself (sarni = sanctuary) in guidance of (poorey) the true guru, and (jap-i) remember and practice (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (mant = mantra) instructions of the guru to live by Divine virtues and commands, (roop) the embodiment of (kaliaan) well-being/happiness. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪ ਕਟੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਉ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੨॥

Sog sanṯāp kate parabẖ āp.  Gur apune ka▫o niṯ niṯ jāp. ||2||

 

(Prabh-i) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (kattey = cut) ended my (sog) sorrow and (santaap) suffering; I (nit nit) forever (jaap-i) remember and obey (apuney = own) my (gur kau) guru. 2

 

ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਪੇ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਸਭਿ ਫਲ ਪਾਏ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੩॥

Jo jan ṯerā jape nā▫o.  Sabẖ fal pā▫e nihcẖal guṇ gā▫o. ||3||

 

(Jan-u) the person (jo) who (japey) remembers and practices (teyra) Your (naau) Naam, i.e. virtues and commands; s/he (gaau = sings) praises and emulates (nihchal) the eternal (gun) Divine virtues and (paaey) obtains (phal = fruit) fulfilment (sabh-i) of all aspirations. 3.

 

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਭਲੀ ਰੀਤਿ ॥ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਜਪਦੇ ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤਿ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੬॥

Nānak bẖagṯā bẖalī rīṯ.  Sukẖ▫ḏāṯa japḏe nīṯ nīṯ. ||4||3||16||

 

Says fifth Nanak: (Bhagtaa) the devotees have this (bhali) good (reet-i) practice; they (japdey) remember and obey the Almighty, (sukhdaata) the giver of comfort/peace. 4. 3. 16.

Basanṯ mėhlā 5.  Hukam kar kīnĥe nihāl.  Apne sevak ka▫o bẖa▫i▫ā ḏa▫i▫āl. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Basant. (Kar-i) giving the motivation from within to live by IT’s (hukam-u) commands the Almighty (keeneyh) made my life (nihaal) happy; IT (bhaiaa) is ever (daiaal-u) kind (kau) to (apney = own) IT’s (seyvak) servants/devotees. 1.

 

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਕੀਆ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦ ਮਹਿ ਦੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gur pūrai sabẖ pūrā kī▫ā.  Amriṯ nām riḏ mėh ḏī▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Poorey) the perfect (gur-i) guru (keeaa = made, poora = complete) accomplished (sabh-u) everything; he (deeaa) gave awareness of (amrit) the life-giving Naam-u (mah-i) in (rid) the mind – and I practiced with which the Almighty was pleased to bless. 1.

ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ॥ ਬਾਹ ਪਕਰਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਓ ॥੨॥

Karam ḏẖaram merā kacẖẖ na bīcẖāri▫o.  Bāh pakar bẖavjal nisṯāri▫o. ||2||

 

The Almighty did not (beechaario) consider whether I performed any (karam-u) ceremony or (dharam-u) religious deed; (pakar-i) holding my (baah) arm, i.e. graciously, (nistaario) ferried me across (bhavjal-u) the world-ocean, i.e. enabled me to overcome vices which came in way of union with IT. 2.

ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕਾਟਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰੇ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਰੇ ॥੩॥

Parabẖ kāt mail nirmal kare.  Gur pūre kī sarṇī pare. ||3||

 

(Prabh-i) the Almighty (kaatt-i = cut) dispelled (mail-u = dirt) vices and (karey = made, nirmal = clean) purified my mind – by leading me to the guru; I (parey/parrey) placed myself (sarni = in sanctuary) under guidance (ki) of (poorey) the perfect guru – who teaches not rituals but obedience of the Almighty. 3.

 

ਆਪਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੭॥

Āp karahi āp karṇaihāre.  Kar kirpā Nānak uḏẖāre. ||4||4||17||

 

The Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (karah-i) made – me purified; (aap-i) IT alone is (karnaihaarey) capable of doing so; IT (kar-i kirpa) kindly (udhaarey) saved me, says fifth Nanak. 4. 4. 17.

ਦੇਖੁ ਫੂਲ ਫੂਲ ਫੂਲੇ ॥ ਅਹੰ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਤਿਆਗੇ ॥ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਪਾਗੇ ॥ ਤੁਮ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਭਾਗੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ḏekẖ fūl fūl fūle.  Ahaʼn ṯi▫āg ṯi▫āge.  Cẖaran kamal pāge. Ŧum milhu parabẖ sabẖāge.  Har cẖeṯ man mere. Rahā▫o.

 

(Deykh-u) see, it is (phool phool) all flowers (phooley) blossoming within; you can have the pleasure if you (tiaag-i) give up (aha-n) ego and (tiaagey) keep it at bay; (paagey) place the self in (kamal = lotus, charan = feet) in care and obedience of the Almighty and (sabhaagey) with that good fortune, (tum) you will (milhu) find (prabh) the Almighty; (cheyt-i) keep in mind (har-i) the Almighty, (meyrey) my (man) mind. 1.

ਸਘਨ ਬਾਸੁ ਕੂਲੇ ॥ ਇਕਿ ਰਹੇ ਸੂਕਿ ਕਠੂਲੇ ॥ ਬਸੰਤ ਰੁਤਿ ਆਈ ॥ ਪਰਫੂਲਤਾ ਰਹੇ ॥੧॥

Sagẖan bās kūle.  Ik rahe sūk kaṯẖūle. Basanṯ ruṯ ā▫ī.  Parfūlṯā rahe. ||1||

 

(Saghan) many plants that are (kooley = tender) green emit (baas-u = smell) are fragrant; but (ik-i = one type) some (rahey) remain (sook-i) dry (katthooley) wood; when (basant) spring (rut-i) season (aaee) comes, they also (paphoolta rahey) bloom, i.e. those who remember God, blossom while others do not; the latter also can revive if they start living by Naam. 1.

 

ਅਬ ਕਲੂ ਆਇਓ ਰੇ ॥ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੋਵਹੁ ਬੋਵਹੁ ॥ ਅਨ ਰੂਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ ਮਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲਹੁ ਭੂਲਹੁ ॥

Ab kalū ā▫i▫o re.  Ik nām bovhu bovhu.  An rūṯ nāhī nāhī.  Maṯ bẖaram bẖūlahu bẖūlahu.

 

(Rey) o human being, (ab) now (kaloo) Kaliyug has (aaio) come – this is the age of conflicts, i.e. is full of distractions; (bovhu bovhu) sow (ik-u) the One Naam. There is no (an) other (root-i) season; (mat-u) do not (bhoolhu bhoolhu) be misled (bharam-i) in delusion – texts prescribe different rituals are practices in other ages, but one needs to practice Naam to find God at all times.

 

ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹੈ ਲੇਖਾ ॥ ਮਨ ਰੁਤਿ ਨਾਮ ਰੇ ॥ ਗੁਨ ਕਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ॥੨॥੧੮॥

Gur mile har pā▫e.  Jis masṯak hai lekẖā. Man ruṯ nām re.  Gun kahe Nānak har hare har hare. ||2||18||

 

One (paaey) finds (har-i) the Almighty within (miley) on finding (gur) the guru – and following his guidance; but that only person finds the true guru in (jis-u) whose (mastak-i = forehead) destiny this is (keykha = writing) written; o (man) mind, this human birth in Kaliyug is (rut-i = season – to sow) the time for practice of Naam; (gun) virtue lies in (kahey = saying) remembering (har-i harey = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i harey = makes green) rejuvenating Naam or virtues and commands of the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 2. 18.

ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਘਰੁ ੨ ਹਿੰਡੋਲ    ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Basanṯ mėhlā 5 gẖar 2 hindol  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Basant Hinddol (ghar-u 2) to be sung to the second beat.   Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who is known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

Note: In this Shabad the fifth Guru uses the analogy of the game of Chauparr to convey how to lead life. Chauparr is a game like Shatranj played on a mat formed by two strips of cloth/wool crossing each other at right angles. It is played by (ddhaal-i) throwing (paasa) the dice and moving (saari) the pieces on the strips accordingly. The game is won by one whose piece gets Home – which is at the cross-point. These terms are used in the Shabad.

 

ਹੋਇ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਕੇ ਹੋਵਹੁ ਜੋੜੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੈਸਹੁ ਸਫਾ ਵਿਛਾਇ ॥੧॥

Ho▫e ikaṯar milhu mere bẖā▫ī ḏubiḏẖā ḏūr karahu liv lā▫e. Har nāmai ke hovhu joṛī gurmukẖ baishu safā vicẖẖā▫e. ||1||

 

(Meyrey) my (bhaai = brother) dear, (milhu) get together (hoey = being, ikatr = one) in holy congregation (laaey) fixing (liv) attention on God and (door-i = far, karhu = make) give up (dubhida = duality) other ideas.

(Hovhu = be, jorri = joined) keep in mind (naavai = Naam) Naam of (har-i) the Almighty, (vichhaaey) spreading (saphaa) the seating mats round the Chauparr, i.e. in holy congregation to learn virtues and commands of God. 1.

 

ਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਸਾ ਢਾਲਹੁ ਬੀਰ ॥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਨਹ ਲਾਗੈ ਪੀਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Inĥ biḏẖ pāsā dẖālahu bīr.  Gurmukẖ nām japahu ḏin rāṯī anṯ kāl nah lāgai pīr. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Inh) this is (bidh-i = method) how to (ddhaalhu) throw the dice o (beer = brother) dear:

(Japahu) remember and obey Naam (din-u) day and (raati) night; and no (peer/peerr) pain will (laagai) be inflicted at (ant) end (kaal-i) time – when account of deeds is taken and consequences imposed, i.e. you will not be denied union with God and not sent for rebirth. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਚਉਪੜਿ ਸਾਜਹੁ ਸਤੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਸਾਰੀ ॥ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਜੀਤਹੁ ਐਸੀ ਖੇਲ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥੨॥

Karam ḏẖaram ṯumĥ cẖa▫upaṛ sājahu saṯ karahu ṯumĥ sārī. Kām kroḏẖ lobẖ moh jīṯahu aisī kẖel har pi▫ārī. ||2||

 

(Tumh) you should (saajahu) make (karam dharam) actions to fulfil your duties the Chauparr, and (karhu) make (sat-u) truthful living (saari) the pieces on the board, i.e. make truthful living the way of life; (jeetahu) conquer (kaam-u) lust, (krodh-u) anger, (lobh-u) greed and (moh-u) worldly attachments; (aisi) such (kheyl = play) a way of living is (piaari) dear to (har-i) God – you will win the game of life and reach God. 2.

 

ਉਠਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਪਰਭਾਤੇ ਸੋਏ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧੇ ॥ ਬਿਖੜੇ ਦਾਉ ਲੰਘਾਵੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਤੇ ॥੩॥

Uṯẖ isnān karahu parbẖāṯe so▫e har ārāḏẖe.  Bikẖ▫ṛe ḏā▫o langẖāvai merā saṯgur sukẖ sahj seṯī gẖar jāṯe. ||3||

 

(Utth-i) get up and (karahu = do) take (isnaan-u) bath (parbhaatey) in the morning, (araadhau = invoke) reflect on Naam of (har-i) the Almighty and do the same (soey) when going to sleep, i.e. remain conscious of Naam at all times.

(Meyra) my (satigur-u) true (langhaavai = takes across) helps to overcome (bikhrrey) difficult-to-handle (daau) moves of the opponent and one (jaatey) gets (ghar-i) home (seyti) with (sahj) ease, i.e. you will overcome vices and be united with God. 3.

 

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਖੈ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਰਚਨੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋ ਨਰੁ ਖੇਲੈ ਸੋ ਜਿਣਿ ਬਾਜੀ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੯॥

Har āpe kẖelai āpe ḏekẖai har āpe racẖan racẖā▫i▫ā. Jan Nānak gurmukẖ jo nar kẖelai so jiṇ bājī gẖar ā▫i▫ā. ||4||1||19||

 

(Har-i) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (rachaaiaa) created (rachan-u) the creation; (aapey) IT-self (kheylai) plays, i.e. acts through the creatures and IT-self (deykhai) watches – for their care and deeds.

(Nar-u) the person (jo) who (kheylai = plays) acts (gurmukh-i) guided by the guru; (so) s/he (aaiaa) comes (ghar-i) home (jin-i) winning (baaji) the game, i.e. one who lives by Naam with the guru’s guidance, makes a success of human birth, and attains union with the Almighty – where the soul came from. 4. 1. 19.

Basanṯ mėhlā 5 hindol.  Ŧerī kuḏraṯ ṯūhai jāṇėh a▫or na ḏūjā jāṇai. Jis no kirpā karahi mere pi▫āre so▫ī ṯujẖai pacẖẖāṇai. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Basant Hinddol. O Almighty, (toohai) You alone (jaanahi) know (teyri) Your (kudrat-i) virtues and powers; (na dooja = no second) none else (jaanai) knows. One (no) to (jis) whom You (karah-i = bestow, kripa = kindness) are kind, (soi) that person (pachhaanai) recognizes (tujhai = you) Your presence, (meyrey) my (piaarey) Beloved Master. 1.

 

ਤੇਰਿਆ ਭਗਤਾ ਕਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਾ ॥ ਥਾਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰਾ ਰੰਗ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ŧeri▫ā bẖagṯā ka▫o balihārā.  Thān suhāvā saḏā parabẖ ṯerā rang ṯere āpārā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

I (balihaara = am sacrifice, kau = to) adore (teyria) Your (bhagtaa) devotees – those who live by Your virtues and commands.

(Teyra) Your (thaan-u) place – a place and mind where You are praised – is (sadaa) ever (suhaava) pleasant/peaceful; (teyrey) Your (rang) plays are (apaara) infinite/beyond comprehension, o (prabh) Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਤੇਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਰਤਾ ॥ ਭਗਤੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੋਈ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਤੂ ਰੰਗੁ ਧਰਤਾ ॥੨॥

Ŧerī sevā ṯujẖ ṯe hovai a▫or na ḏūjā karṯā. Bẖagaṯ ṯerā so▫ī ṯuḏẖ bẖāvai jis no ṯū rang ḏẖarṯā. ||2||

 

(Teyri) Your (seyva = service) living in Your obedience can (hovai) be done (tey) by (tujh) You, i.e. by one whom You motivate from within; (na dooja = no second) none (aur-u) else (karta = does) lives by Your commands.

(Soi) only that person (bhaavai) pleases (tudh-u) You, who is (teyra) Your (bhagat) devotee; s/he is one (no) to (jis) whom (too) You (dharta) give (rang-u) love – please bless me to be such a person. 2.

ਤੂ ਵਡ ਦਾਤਾ ਤੂ ਵਡ ਦਾਨਾ ਅਉਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋ ਦੂਜਾ ॥ ਤੂ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਉ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਪੂਜਾ ॥੩॥

Ŧū vad ḏāṯā ṯū vad ḏānā a▫or nahī ko ḏūjā. Ŧū samrath su▫āmī merā ha▫o ki▫ā jāṇā ṯerī pūjā. ||3||

 

(Too) You are (vadd) greatly (daataa = giver) beneficent and (daanaa) wise; there is (na dooja) none (aur-u) else – like You – others give and expect in return.

(Too) You (suaami) the Master (meyra = my) of all, are (samrath-u) Omnipotent; (hau) I (jaana) know (kiaa = what?) nothing of (teyri) Your (pooja) worship, i.e. I am ignorant, please enlighten me how to live by Your virtues and commands, o Almighty. 3.

 

ਤੇਰਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੈ ਭਾਣਾ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਢਹਿ ਪਇਆ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਮੁਗਧ ਅਜਾਣਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੨੦॥

Ŧerā mahal agocẖar mere pi▫āre bikẖam ṯerā hai bẖāṇā.  Kaho Nānak dẖėh pa▫i▫ā ḏu▫ārai rakẖ levhu mugaḏẖ ajāṇā. ||4||2||20||

 

(Teyra) Your (mahal-u = palace) Being is (agocharr-u = not perceived by the senses) ineffable, and (teyra) Your (bhaana) will/liking is (bikham-u) hard to live by, (meyrey) my (piaarey) Beloved Master;

(Kahu) say fifth Nanak: O Almighty, I have (ddhah-i paiaa = fallen) placed myself (duaarai = at the place) in Your care and obedience; I am (mugadh) foolish and (ajaana) ignorant, please (rakh-i leyvhu = keep) accept me in Your care. 4. 2. 20.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Basant Hinddol. (Biaapi) being (bharam-i) in delusion due to (aha-n) ego (mani) of the mind, the mankind does not (boojhai = understand) recognize/acknowledge (mool-u = root) the Creator; and is (na soojhai) not aware of (aap-u) the self, i.e. does not look within. 1.

 

ਪਿਤਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਧਨੀ ॥ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਹੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Piṯā pārbarahm parabẖ ḏẖanī.  Mohi nisṯārahu nirgunī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O my (pitaa) father, (paarbrahm) the Supreme (prabh) Almighty (dhani) Master; please (nistaarhu) take (nirguni) the virtue-less (moh-i) me across the world-ocean, i.e. rid me of vices and accept for union with You. 1.

 (Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਓਪਤਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਇਹ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੀ ॥੨॥

Opaṯ parla▫o parabẖ ṯe hovai ih bīcẖārī har janī. ||2||

 

(Opat-i) creation and (parlau) dissolution (hovai = happens) is done (tey) by (prabh) the Almighty; (ihu) this (beechaari = thinking) is the faith of (sant = saintly, jani = persons) the devotees. 2.

 

ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਸੇ ਗਨੀ ॥੩॥

Nām parabẖū ke jo rang rāṯe kal mėh sukẖī▫e se ganī. ||3||

 

Those (jo) who are (raatey) imbued (rang-i) with love (key) of, i.e. live by Naam or virtues and commands of (prabhoo) the Almighty, (sey) they are (gani = counted) the only ones (sukhheeay) at peace (mah-i) in (kal-i) the age of conflicts/duality. 3.

 

ਅਵਰੁ ਉਪਾਉ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਰੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ॥੪॥੩॥੨੧॥

Avar upā▫o na ko▫ī sūjẖai Nānak ṯarī▫ai gur bacẖnī. ||4||3||21||

 

We (tareeai = swim) get across the world-ocean, i.e. overcome vices to get to God, (bachni = with words) by following the teachings of (gur) the guru; I (na soojhai) am aware of (na koi =not any) no (avar-u) other (upaau) method/means, says fifth Nanak. 4. 3. 21.
