Keḏārā mėhlā 4 gẖar 1  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Keydaara, (ghar-u 1) to be sung to the first beat.  Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace.

Mere man rām nām niṯ gāvī▫ai re.  Agam agocẖar na jā▫ī har lakẖi▫ā gur pūrā milai lakẖāvī▫ai re. Rahā▫o.

O (meyrey) my (man) mind, we should (nit) ever (gaaveeai = sing) utter and practice (naam) virtues and commands of (raam) the all-pervasive Almighty.

(Har-i) the Almighty is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (agochar-u) not perceived by the senses; so IT (na jaaee) cannot (lakhiaa) be seen; but when (poora) the perfect (gur-u) guru (milai) is found, attributes of God (lakhaaveeai = shown) are understood.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Jis āpe kirpā kare merā su▫āmī ṯis jan ka▫o har liv lāvī▫ai re.  Sabẖ ko bẖagaṯ kare har kerī har bẖāvai so thā▫e pāvī▫ai re. ||1||

One on (jis-u) whom (suaami) the Master (karey) bestows (kirpa) kindness; IT enables (tin kau) him/her to (laaveeai) focus (liv) attention on Naam, i.e. emulating virtues and obeying commands, of (har-i) the Almighty.

(Sabh ko) everyone (karey = does) engages (bhagat-i) in devotion/obedience (keyri) of (har-i) the Almighty; (so) that which (bhaavai) is liked (har-i) by the Almighty is (paaveeai) put (thaaey) in place, i.e. accepted. 1.

Awareness of (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) virtues and commands is (pah-i) with (har-i) the Almighty; only when (har-i) the Almighty (deyvai = gives) imparts the awareness, (ta) then we (dhiaaveeai) pay attention to, and live by, Naam.

One (no) to (jis) whom (suaami) the Master (meyra = my) of all (dey-i) gives the awareness – s/he lives by Naam – and hence (sabh-u) all (tis-u = that) his/her (leykha) accounts – of wrongdoings – (chhaddaaveai = freed) are written off. 2.

Those who (araadhah-i) invoke and live by (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty, (so) they (kaheeai) are called (dhann-u) blessed; (bhaag-u) good fortune has been (likh-i) written and (paaveeai) put (mastak-i) on the forehead (dhur-i) at the source, and they conduct themselves by Naam.

(Meyra) my (man-u) mind (bigsai) blossoms (deykhai) seeing (tin) them, (jio) like (maat) the mother – feels happy and – (laaveeai = touches, gal-i =throat with throat) embraces (sut-u) the son (mil-i) on meeting him. 3.

O (har-i) the Almighty (prabh) Master, (ham) I am (baarik) the child and You are (meyrey) my (pitaa) father; please (dehu) give (mati = counsel) the awareness by (jit-u) which I can (paaveeai) find You (har-i) the Almighty.

(Jio) like (gaoo) the cow (sukh maanai) is happy (deykh-i) to see its (bachhura) calf, (tiau) similarly (gal-i laaveeai = join throat) embrace me o (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. accept me for union with You, supplicates fourth Nanak. 4. 1.

(Dhoey dhoey) ever wash (charan) feet (key) of, and (poojahu) worship (satiguru) the true guru, i.e. humbly learn and assimilate the guru’s teachings; this is how to (lahu/labh) find (har-i) the Almighty (prabh-u) Master (meyra = my) of all.

Mā▫ī saṯsang jāgī.  Pari▫a rang ḏekẖai japṯī nām niḏẖānī. Rahā▫o.

O my (maaee) mother, the soul-woman in me is inebriated by temptations in the world-play, but (jaagi = awake) becomes vigilant (santsang-i) in company of the guru – by joining the holy congregation where the guru’s teachings are disseminated.

When s/he (deykhai) sees (rang) plays of (pria) the Almighty-spouse, s/he gets (nidhaani) the treasure of awareness of, and (japti) remembers and practices, (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

With (piaas = thirst) yearning for (darsan) vision of the Almighty-spouse, her (taar) gaze of (lochan) eyes (laagi) remains fixed on God’s path, i.e. steadfastly conducts the self by Naam; and (tiaas/trisna) craving for (biddaani) other things (bisri) is forgotten. 1.

You lead to the guru those whom You like; their (bhram-u) straying from Divine commands and resultant (bhau) fear of falling prey to vices and (moh-u) attachment/being caught in the world-play (kattiao = cut) ends (bachni = with words) with guidance of (gur) the guru; You (dikhaavu = show) bless them with (apna = own) Your (daras) vision, i.e. grant them awareness and ability to live by Naam to find You. 1.

Sabẖ kī ren ho▫e man merā ahaʼn▫buḏẖ ṯajāvahu.  Apnī bẖagaṯ ḏėh ḏa▫i▫ālā vadbẖāgī Nānak har pāvhu. ||2||4||6||

Please be kind (tajaavahu) to enable me to forsake (ahangbudh-i) ego so that (meyra) my (man-u) mind (hoey) becomes (reyn) dust of the feet (ki) of (sabh) all, i.e. I humbly give up vices and find You.

O (daiaala) kind Master, please (deyh-i) give (apni) Your (bhagat-i) devotion, i.e. enable me to live by Naam, so that with that (vaddbhaagi) good fortune I (paavhu) find (har-i) the Almighty, supplicates fifth Nanak. 2. 4. 6.

Keḏārā mėhlā 5.  Har bin janam akārath jāṯ.  Ŧaj gopāl ān rang rācẖaṯ mithi▫ā pahiraṯ kẖāṯ. Rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Keydaara. (Janam-u) human birth (jaat) goes/is wasted (akaarath) in vain, (bin-u) without finding (har-i) the Almighty.

It is (mithiaa = false) disgraceful (raachat) to remain engrossed in (aan-i) other (rang-i = love) pursuits

and (taj-i = forsake) not acknowledge/obey (gopaal = Sustainor) the Almighty Provider while (pahrat-i) wearing clothes and (khaat) eating food, i.e. enjoying IT’s benedictions.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Ḏẖan joban sampai sukẖ bẖogvai sang na nibhaṯ māṯ.  Marig ṯarisnā ḏekẖ racẖi▫o bāvar ḏarum cẖẖā▫i▫ā rang rāṯ. ||1||

One (bhugvai) enjoys and remains engrossed with (dhan) money, (joban-u = youth) physical beauty/strength, (sampai) belongings, but these do not (nibhat) last (maat) a bit when death comes.

O (baavar = mad) mind-less human, you (raat = dyed) are imbued (rang-i) with love and (rachio) are engrossed in/attached to them like (mrig = deer, tisna = thirst) the deer with the mirage in the desert – which is an illusion – and someone with (chhaaiaa) shade of (drum) a tree – which is temporary are. 1.

Mān moh mahā maḏ mohaṯ kām kroḏẖ kai kẖāṯ.  Kar gėh leho ḏās Nānak ka▫o parabẖ jī▫o ho▫e sahāṯ. ||2||5||7||

The human gets (mohat = enchanted) inebriated by (mahaa = great) strong (mad) intoxication of (maan = honor) status, (moh) attachments to the world-play and fallen into (khaat) the pit (kai) of (kaam) lust and (krodh) wrath.

O (jeeo) revered (prabh) Almighty, please (hoey) be (sahaat) helpful and (gah-i) hold his/her (kar-u) hand and pull his/her out of the vices, says fifth Nanak. 2. 5. 7.

Keḏārā mėhlā 5.  Har bin ko▫e na cẖālas sāth.  Ḏīnā nāth karuṇāpaṯ su▫āmī anāthā ke nāth. Rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Keydaara. (Koey na) no one/nothing (chaalas-i) goes with the soul – on death of the body – (bin-u) except (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. only having practiced Naam or Divine virtues and commands can help in the hereafter.

(Karunaapat-i) the compassionate (suaami) Master (naath = master) takes care of (deena) the hapless here – and in the hereafter; IT is (naath) the Master (key) of (anaatha) the master-less.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Suṯ sampaṯ bikẖi▫ā ras bẖogvaṯ nah nibhaṯ jam kai pāth.  Nām niḏẖān gā▫o gun gobinḏ uḏẖar sāgar ke kẖāṯ. ||1||

The human (bhugvat) enjoys (ras) the pleasures of having (sut = sons) children, (sampat-i) wealth and (bikhiaa) wealth, but they do not (nibahat = last) help on (paath) path (kai) of, i.e. when (jam = agent of Divine justice) consequences of deeds have to be faced – in the hereafter.

Therefore, o human, gather (nidhaan-u) the treasure/credit of  living by (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands; (gaau = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (gobind) the Master of the universe, (udhar) to come out of (khaat) the pit of (saagar = ocean) the world-ocean of vices. 1.

Saran samrath akath agocẖar har simraṯ ḏukẖ lāth.  Nānak ḏīn ḏẖūr jan bāʼncẖẖaṯ milai likẖaṯ ḏẖur māth. ||2||6||8||

(Har-i) the Almighty is (samrath) Omnipotent, (akath) indescribable and (agochar) not perceived by the senses; place yourself in IT’s (saran-i = in sanctuary) care and obedience; (dukh) distress (laath) is removed (simrat) by remembrance of, and obedience to, (har-i) the Almighty.

(Deen = poor) humble devotes, (baanchhat) seek (dhoor-i) the dust of feet of (jan = servants) devotees of the Almighty but can (milai) get only if it is (likhat) written (dhur-i) at the source – by the Creator – on (maath = on forehead) in destiny, so please be kind to bestow, prays fifth Nanak. 2. 6.8.
