Composition of the fourth Guru in Raag Basant, (ik tukey) stanzas of one line, (ghar-u 1) to be sung to the first beat.    Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

Ji▫o pasrī sūraj kiraṇ joṯ.  Ŧi▫o gẖat gẖat rama▫ī▫ā oṯ poṯ. ||1||

(Jio) like (kiran-i) rays of (sooraj) the sun (pasri = spread) are present (jot-i) in light; (tio) similarly (ramaeeaa) the Almighty is present (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in every one like (ot-i) warp/linear fibres and weft/cross fibres in a woven fabric. 1.

Ėko har ravi▫ā sarab thā▫e.  Gur sabḏī milī▫ai merī mā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Eyko) the same One (har-i) Almighty (raviaa) pervades in (srab) all (thaaey) places. We can (mileeai) find IT (sabdi = with words) with guidance of (guru) the guru, (meyri) my (maaey) mother. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Gẖat gẖat anṯar eko har so▫e.  Gur mili▫ai ik pargat ho▫e. ||2||

(Soey) the same (eyko) One (har-i) Almighty is present (antar-i) in (ghatt-i ghatt-i) everyone; (ik-u) the One (hoey = becomes, pargatt-u = manfest) is recognized (miliai) by finding and following guidance (gur-i) of the guru. 2.

Ėko ek rahi▫ā bẖarpūr.  Sākaṯ nar lobẖī jāṇėh ḏūr. ||3||

(Eyko eyk-u) the same One (rahiaa = remains, bharpoor-i = filling) is present in all. But (nar) a person (saakat = worshipper of Shakti) who turns away from God (jaanah-i) deems IT (door-i) far – and hence wanders all over. 3.

Ėko ek varṯai har lo▫e.  Nānak har eko kare so ho▫e. ||4||1||

(Eyko Eyk) the same One (har-i) Almighty (vartai) pervades in (loey) all people/places; and what (eyko) the One (har-i) Almighty (karey) does, (s-u) that (hoey) happens. 4. 1.

Basanṯ mėhlā 4.  Raiṇ ḏinas ḏu▫e saḏe pa▫e.  Man har simrahu anṯ saḏā rakẖ la▫e. ||1||

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Basant. (Rain-i) night and (dinas-u) day are (duey) both (sadey = calls) reminders – that one is nearer the end with every passing day and night. O (man = mind) human being, (simrahu) keep in mind – Naam or virtues and commands of – (har-i) the Almighty, for Naam (sadaa) ever (rakh-i laey) saves from – all troubles here and in the hereafter. 1.

Har har cẖeṯ saḏā man mere.  Sabẖ ālas ḏūkẖ bẖanj parabẖ pā▫i▫ā gurmaṯ gāvhu guṇ parabẖ kere. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (meyrey) my (man) mind, ever (cheyt-i) remember (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Divine virtues and commands.

(Prabh) the Almighty (paaiaa) is found by (bhanj-i = destroying) giving up (sabh-u) all (aalas-u = laziness) indifference and (dookh) faults; (gaavahu = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues (keyrey) of (prabh) the Almighty (gurmat-i) with the guru’s guidance. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Manmukẖ fir fir ha▫umai mu▫e.  Kāl ḏaiṯ sangẖāre jam pur ga▫e. ||2||

(Manmukh = self-willed) those who do not follow the guru because of their (haumai) ego, (muey = die) succumb to temptations/vices (phir-i phir-i) again and again. They (gaey) go to (pur-i) to the town/jurisdiction of (jam) Divine justice and are (maarey = beaten) punished (dait-i) by the demon (kaal-i) of death/Divine justice – who do not allow union of the erring souls to God. 2.

Gurmukẖ har har har liv lāge.  Janam maraṇ ḏo▫ū ḏukẖ bẖāge. ||3||

(Gurmukh-i) those who follow the guru (laagey) fix their (liv) attention on Naam (har-i har-i har-i – three ways) of the Almighty in thought, word and deed; their (dukh) pains due (do-oo) both caused by succumbing to vices in life, and (janam) births and (maran) deaths after death (bhaagey = run) are obviated. 3.

(Har-i) the Almighty (dhaari) bestowed (kirpa) kindness (kau) to me, IT’s (bhagat = devotee, janaa   = people) devotee; (gur-u) Guru Nanak was (tutthaa) pleased to guide and I (miliaa) found (banvaari = gardener of the vegetation) the Sustainor Almighty. 4. 2.

Basanṯ hindol mėhlā 4 gẖar 2  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Basant Hinddol, (ghar-u2) to be sung to the second beat.    Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

Rām nām raṯan koṯẖ▫ṛī gaṛ manḏar ek lukānī.  Saṯgur milai ṯa kẖojī▫ai mil joṯī joṯ samānī. ||1||

Naam, i.e. commands, of (raam) the Almighty is (eyk = one) a (ratan) a jewel = valuable resource – (lukaani) hidden in (kotthrri) a room (mandar-i) in the building of (garr) a fort, i.e. awareness of Naam or commands of the Creator are in the conscience.

If (satigur-u) the true guru is found, (taa) then (khojeeai) by searching – with the guru’s guidance – and when (mil-i) found, (joti) the soul (samaani) merges (jot-i) in the Supreme Soul – the Almighty, i.e. the way to attain union of the soul with the Creator is to live in obedience of Naam, with the guru’s guidance. 1.

Māḏẖo sāḏẖū jan ḏeh milā▫e.  Ḏekẖaṯ ḏaras pāp sabẖ nāsėh paviṯar param paḏ pā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (maadho = husband of maaiaa) Almighty, please (deyhu milaaey = cause to meet) lead me to (saadhoo = sage, jan person) the guru.

(Sabh-i) all (paap) sins (naasah-i = run) leave (deykhat) on seeing (daras-u) sight – of one living by Naam; who (paaey) attains (pavitr) the pristine (param) supreme (pad) status – of being approved by the Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Pancẖ cẖor mil lāge nagrī▫ā rām nām ḏẖan hiri▫ā. Gurmaṯ kẖoj pare ṯab pakre ḏẖan sābaṯ rās ubri▫ā. ||2||

(Panch) five (chor) thieves, i.e. the five vices – lust, anger, greed, worldly attachment, and vanity – (laagey) break into (nagareea = town) the body/mind and (hiriaa) take away (dhan-u) the wealth of Raam Naam from it.

When one (parey) engages in (khoj) search within, (tab) then – the five vices are (pakrey = caught) overcome, (dhan raas-i = money) the wealth of Naam (saabat-u = whole) is preserved and (ubriaa) saved. 2.

Pakẖand bẖaram upāv kar thāke riḏ anṯar mā▫i▫ā mā▫i▫ā. Sāḏẖū purakẖ purakẖpaṯ pā▫i▫ā agi▫ān anḏẖer gavā▫i▫ā. ||3

People (kar-i) make (upaav) efforts but (thaakey = got tired) fail to find God by (paakhandd) pretentious garbs or showing knowledge because (maaiaa maaiaa) money and money is all they have in mind. But one who (paiaa) finds (saadhoo = saint) the guru, (purakh-u) the great person, (purakhpat-i = master of person) the sublime personality, his/her (andheyr-u) darkness of (agiaan) ignorance (gavaaiaa = lost) ends and s/he lives by Naam. 3.

Jagannāth jagḏīs gusā▫ī kar kirpā sāḏẖ milāvai. Nānak sāʼnṯ hovai man anṯar niṯ hirḏai har guṇ gāvai. ||4||1||3||

When the Almighty (jagan-naath, jagdees, gusaaee – all meaning) Master of the world (kar-i) bestows (kirpa) kindness, IT (milaavai) leads to (saadh-u) the guru.

(Saant-i) peace (hovai = happens) comes (antar-i) in (man) the mind – of the person who follows the guru; s/he (nit) ever (gaavai = sings) praises/contemplates (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty (hirdai) in mind – and emulates, says fourth Nanak. 4. 1. 3.

(Tumhraa) Your (jan = servant) devotee, whether (jaat-i = of caste) of high caste or (avijaata = without caste) of low caste, i.e. of status high or low, or anyone (patit) fallen to vices, who (japio) remembers and practices virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty is (paveechhey/pavitr) purified.

One whom (prabh) God (dinchhey/deeno = gives) enables to (sobhaa) praise and emulate virtues (har-i) the Almighty; (keeo) makes him/her of a status (oopar-i) above (sagal) the whole (bhavan) world – all creatures. 2.

(Sey) those (jan) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty, (jin) who (dhaario) keep (har-i) the Almighty (urchhey/ur) in mind, are (dhann-i) blessed, (vaddey vadd) greatest of all and (poorey) perfect human beings, o (har-i) Almighty. 3.

Says fourth Nanak: I (paaiaa) found (gur-u) the guru when (har-i) the Almighty (tutthey) was pleased and the guru (kee-ey) made (ham) me, (patit) one fallen to vices, (paveechhey/pavitar) purified, i.e. vices were driven out of the mind and God discovered. 4. 2. 4.

(Meyra) my (manooaa) mind having (geedhey) got used to ever (nit) ever drinking (ras-i) the elixir of (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam) Divine virtues and commands, (na sakai) cannot (rah-i) remain without Naam.

It is (jio) like (baarik) an infant (rasik-i) joyously (pario) goes for (maata) the mother’s (than-i) nipple, and (bilal bileedhey) wriggles when the nipple (kaadhey) is taken out of its mouth. 1.

O (jeeo) revered (gobind) Master of the world, (meyrey) my (man) mind and (tan) body are (beedhey = pierced) deeply in love with Naam or virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty.

It was (vaddai) with good (bhaag-i) fortune that I (paaiaa) found (gur) the great (satigur-u) true guru – with whose guidance I (seedhey) succeeded to (paaiaa) find (har-i) the Almighty (vich-i) in (kaaiaa) body-(nagar) village, i.e. within and am at peace. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Jan ke sās sās hai jeṯe har birėh parabẖū har bīḏẖe. Ji▫o jal kamal parīṯ aṯ bẖārī bin jal ḏekẖe suklīḏẖe. ||2||

(Jetey = as many) all (saas saas) breaths that (hai) are (key) of (jan) the devotee, s/he is (beedhey = pierced) is in love with and (birah-i) yearns for (har-i) the Almighty (prabhoo) Master with each of them, i.e. every moment.

(Jio) like there is (at-i) very (bhaari = heavy) strong (preet-i) affection between (kamal) the lotus flower and (jal) water, and the lotus (sukleedhey) withers (bin-u) without (deykhey = seeing) company of (jal) water – the devotee feels the pangs when separated from the Almighty. 2.

(Mal-u = dirt) the vice of (haumai) ego (ki) of (janam janam) birth after birth (niksi) goes out from the mind when washed with (amrit) the life giving (jal-i = of water, nidh-i = treasure) the ocean of virtues, i.e. of Naam of, (har-i) the Almighty. 3.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Basant. (Man) the mind (bharam-i bharam-i) keeps wandering and (dhaavai = runs, bahu = greatly) running around (khin-u khin-u) every moment, not (paaeeai) getting to (vaasa) stay (til-u = sesame seed) a bit (ghar-i) in the house, i.e. the mind is continuously caught in numerous ideas and loses focus.

When (gur-i) the guru (dhaario) puts his (sabad-u = word) teachings as (ankas-u) the iron goad (sir-i) on the head – used to control an elephant – (daaroo = cure) to control it, then it is (aan-i) brought (vasaaeeai) to live (mandar-i) in building (ghar-i) of the house, i.e. the mind attains focus by following the guru’s guidance. 1.

O (jeeo) revered (gobind = masater of the world) Almighty, please (meyl-i = cause to meet) lead me to (satsangat-i) the holy congregation where virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty are (dhiaaeeai = paid attention) recounted and their practice learnt.

(Rog-u) the malady of (haumai) ego – acting by own will – (gaiaa) leaves, (sukh-u) peace (paaeeai) attained and the mind (lagaaeeai = makes, samaadh-i = undistracted meditation) remains absorbed (sahj-i) naturally in God. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

There are (bahu) plenty of (ratan, laal, maanak – all precious stones) jewels, (laadey = loaded) contained (ghar-i = in house) within, but (bhramiaa) the wandering mind (na sakaaeeai) cannot (lah-i) find them, i.e. the valuable Naam is present within but other ideas do not let one be conscious of it.

(Jiau) like (oddaa) the person who can sense presence of water by seeing the soil, can (khin) instantly (kaaddhai) tell if (koop) a well is (guhj) hidden below, (tiau) similarly (satigur-i) the true guru (lahaaeeai) enables to find (vast = substance) Naam within. 2.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Basant. (Sabh) all humans (bin-u = without) who do not (karma = deeds) obey God’s commands (bhulaaee) go astray (bharam-i) in delusion; they (paaee) suffer (bahut) great (dukh) distress (moh-i) with attachment to (maaiaa) the transitory world-play – of relatives, wealth, status, pleasures and so on – and forgetting the Creator.

(Manmukh = self oriented) those who go their own way (andhey = blind) are blinded by attachment to the world-play, and do not (paaee) get place – with God, i.e. cannot attain union with the Creator; like (keerra) a worm of excrement (samaaee) remains (maah-i) in the excrement, they remain attached to the world-play. 1.

One who (manney) obeys (hukam-u) Divine commands, (so) that (jan-u) person is (parvaan-u) accepted by the Almighty. His/her living by Naam or Divine virtues and commands (sabad-i = by words) according to teachings (kai) of (gur) the guru, is (neesaan-u = marking) the sign for recognition for acceptance. 1.

Those in (jinha) whose destiny it has been so (likh-i = written, paaiaa = put) written down, they (ratey) are imbued with love (saach-i) of the Eternal. Naam of (har-i) the Almighty (sadaa) is ever (bhaaiaa) liked (man-i) by their minds.

(Sukh-u) peace/comfort is (sadaa) ever (hoey) experienced by complying with (baani = words) guidance of (satigur) the true guru; (soey = that) it (milaaey = causes to meet) enables (joti) the soul to merge (jot-i) with the Supreme Spirit. 2.

(Kinai na) no one (paaee) obtains (mukat-i) freedom vices in life and from rebirth on death, (bin-u) without (naamai) practice of Naam; and awareness of Naam is (paaee = put, plai = in lap) received (tey) from the guru. 3.

But (so) that person (boojhai) understands Naam (jis-u) whom (aap-i = self) the Almighty (bujhaaey) gives the understanding; (seyva = service) obedience to (satigur) the true guru (drirraaey) creates firm understanding of, and commitment for, Naam.

Those (jin) who (jaata = know) acknowledge and obey the (ik-i) One Almighty (sey) those (jan) persons are (parvaan-u) accepted by God. Their (ratey) being imbued (naam-i) with Naam is (neessan-u) the mark for recognition (dar-i) in Divine court, says third Nanak. 4. 10.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Basant. One to whom the Almighty (kripa karey) is kind to IT (milaaey) leads to (satiguru) the true guru – and s/he obeys the guru; (aapey aap-i) IT-self (aaey) comes to (vasai) abide (man-i) in mind of that person, i.e. s/he acts by Naam.

His/her (mat-i) understanding becomes (nihchal) steady and (man) the mind (sadaa) ever (dheer) restful/at peace; s/he (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of the Almighty who is (gaheer) deep/profound (guni) in virtues. 1.

Nāmhu bẖūle marėh bikẖ kẖā▫e.  Baritha janam fir āvahi jā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Those who (bhooley) stray (naamhu) from Naam (marah-i = die, khaaey = eating) succumb to (bikh-u) vices; their (janam-u) human birth – the opportunity to unite with the Creator – is (brithaa) wasted and they (aavah-i = come, jaaey = go) are born to die (phir-i) again. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

People (karah-i = do) adopt (bahu) numerous types of (bheykh) garbs – trying to show they have become pious – but do not (hoey) have (saant-i) peace (man-i) in mind, i.e. have desires within; because of their (bahu) big (abhimaan-i) pride they  – do not obey the Almighty and – (khoey) lose (apni) their (pat-i) honor, i.e. are not approved by the Almighty.

(Sey) those (jin) who (pachhaaniaa) recognize (sabad-u = Divine word) Divine commands within are (vadbhaagi) very fortunate; their (baahar-i = outside, jaada = going) the unsteady mind (aaniaa) is brought (mah = in, ghar = home) made steady – with focus on God. 2.

(Apaara) the Infinite (vast = thing) Almighty is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension but can be found (mah-i) in home/mind; IT   is found by one who (khojah-i) searches (gurmat-i) with the guru’s guidance (beechaara) reflecting (sabad-i) on his teachings.

(Nav nidh-i = nine treasures) the valuable (naam-u) Naam or Divine virtues and commands is (paaee) found (maah-i) in (ghar = house) mind (hi) itself. Those (raatey) imbued (rang-i) with love of God (samaah-i) remain absorbed in – in obedience – (sach-i) of the Eternal. 3.

The Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (karey) does things, (kiachh-u na) nothing (jaaey) can be (karan-u) done by the creature by him/her-self; God (laey milaaey) unites with IT-self when (aapaey = self) is IT is (bhaavai) pleased – with deeds of the creature.

There is (naahi ko) none (neyrrai) nearer (tey) than (tis-u = that) God – being within; none is (door-i) away from IT; God (rahiaa gharpoor-i) pervades everywhere applicable everywhere (naam-i) with IT’s virtues and commands, says third Nanak. 4. 11.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Basant. One who makes it his/her (subhaaey) nature to keep (har-i) the Almighty (cheyt-i) in mind (sabdi = with word) as taught by (gur) the guru, s/he (rahai) remains (aghaaey) satiated with (ras-i) the pleasure of practice of (naam) virtues and commands of (raam) the all-pervasive Almighty.

Influence of (paap) sins of (kott kottantar) crores of, i.e. numerous,  past births (jal-i jaah-i = are burnt) are removed from the mind, i.e. one who has God in mind no longer commits sins, s/he (marah-i) dies (jeevat) alive, i.e. gives up ego, obeys Divine commands and (smaah-i) remains absorbed  in practice Naam of (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

(Mukat-i) freedom from vices in life, and from rebirth on death, is not (hoey = happen) attained by wearing (bhagavai) saffron (veys-i) attire, i.e. by wearing pious-looking garbs; (na koey) no one (paavai) obtains (saant-i) peace by adopting (bahu) numerous such (sanjam-i) disciplines/methods – but by deeds.

Awareness of Naam (praapat-i = hoey) is received (gurmat-i) with the guru’s guidance; some (vaddbhaagi) fortunate person (paavai) receives – and acts by – (soey) that. 2.

(Phal) fruits and (phool) flowers (laagey) are borne, (jaa-n) when the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (laaey) attaches, i.e. fulfilment of wishes happens with Divine grace; when one (lagai) attaches (mool-i) to the root, i.e. when one relies on, and the Almighty is pleased, then one (paaey) finds (satigur-u) the true guru. 3.

I (vaaria = am sacrifice, vittahu = to) adore (baani) teachings of the guru and (bal-i jaaee = sacrifice, vittahu = to) give up ego and obey (gur) the great (sabad) Divine commands, as taught by the guru, (bhaai) o brother.

Mere man rām nām cẖiṯ lā▫e.  Man ṯan ṯerā hari▫ā hovai ik har nāmā fal pā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (meyrey) my (man) mind, i.e. human being, (laaey) engage (chit-u) your thoughts (naam-i) on Naam of (raam) the all-pervasive Almighty.  You will (paaey) receive Naam of (ik-u) the One (har-i) Almighty as (phal-u = fruit) a result, i.e. you will find the Almighty within and (teyra) your (man-u) mind and (tan-u) body (hovai) will be (hariaa = green) rejuvenated – enabled to resist temptations. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

The (dukh-u) the pain-causing (haumai) ego (utth-i gaiaa) leaves (vichahu) from within, and (sukhu) peace (aaey) comes to (vutthaa) abide, i.e. is experienced, o (bhaai) brother. 2.

Those (jina no) whom (dhur-i = source) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (bakhsion) bestows grace; they (laian-u milaaey) are united with IT’s (sabdey = by word) motivation to obey Divine commands, o brother.

We (aghuleeai) are emancipated (dhoorr-i) with dust of feet (tina = their, ki = of) of theirs, i.e. serving and following their example, by (milaaey = cause to meet) being led to (satsangat-i) holy congregation – where virtues and commands of the Almighty are recounted and learnt to practice – and (meyl-i) be united with the Master. 3.

Then one (sukh-u) peace/comfort (sad) ever (vasai) abides (man-i) in mind and (tan-i) body, i.e. one attains the supreme comfort with (milaava) union with the Almighty (hoi) being attained (sabd-i = with word) through obedience to Divine commands, o brother, says third Nanak. 4. 1. 18. 12. 18. 30.
