ਰਾਗੁ ਕਲਿਆਨ ਮਹਲਾ ੪    ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Rāg kali▫ān mėhlā 4   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯnām karṯā purakẖ nirbẖa▫o nirvair akāl mūraṯ ajūnī saibẖaʼn gur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in (raag-u) Raga Kaliaan.     Invoking the ONE Almighty, (sat-i) with eternal (naam-u) commands/writ; (karta purakh-u) Creator of all universe. (Nirbhau = beyond fear, is not answerable to anyone) being the highest authority, does not fear or favour any one/thing, (nirvair-u = without enmity) is not against any one, (moorat-i = picture) is the embodiment of (akaal) timeless-ness and deathless-ness, (ajooni) does not take physical life form, (saibha’n) is self-existent; is known (gur prasaad-i) with the guru’s grace/guidance.

 

 

ਰਾਮਾ ਰਮ ਰਾਮੈ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰੇ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਤੂ ਬਡ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Rāmā ram rāmai anṯ na pā▫i▫ā.   Ham bārik parṯipāre ṯumre ṯū bad purakẖ piṯā merā mā▫i▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

No one (paaiaa) has found (ant-u = end) the extent of creation/powers/virtues of (raama ram) the all-pervasive (raamai) Almighty.

O Almighty, (ham) we are (tumrey) Your (baarik) children (pratipaarey = nurtured) looked after by (tum) You, (badd) the great (purakh-u) all-pervasive (pitaa) father and (maaiaa) mother (meyra = my) of all. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਸੰਖ ਅਗਮ ਹਹਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੀ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

Har ke nām asaʼnkẖ agam hėh agam agam har rā▫i▫ā. Guṇī gi▫ānī suraṯ baho kīnī ik ṯil nahī kīmaṯ pā▫i▫ā. ||1||

 

(Naam = names) attributes/virtues of (har-i) the Almighty (hah-i) are (asankh) countless and (agam) beyond comprehension; (raaiaa = king) the Sovereign (har-i) Almighty is (agam) beyond reach and (agam) beyond comprehension.

(Guni = virtuous) the wise and (giaani) learned (keeni) have done (bahu = much) deep (surat-i) reflection but have not (paaiaa) known even (ik-u) one (til-u = sesame seed) bit of (keemat-i = price) worth of the Almighty. 1.

 

ਗੋਬਿਦ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਸਦ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਤੂ ਅਮਿਤਿ ਅਤੋਲੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਬਹੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਥਾਹ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

Gobiḏ guṇ gobiḏ saḏ gāvahi guṇ gobiḏ anṯ na pā▫i▫ā. Ŧū amiṯ aṯol aprampar su▫āmī baho japī▫ai thāh na pā▫i▫ā. ||2||

 

O (gobid/gobind = master of the world) Almighty, the seekers (sad) ever (gaavah-i = sing) praise of You (gobid) the Almighty, but none (paaiaa) has known (ant-u = end) extent of (gun) virtues and powers of the Almighty.

O (suaami) Master, (too) You are (amit-i) immeasurable – in virtues and (atol-u) not weighable – Your powers cannot be known, You are (aprampar-u = with no far end) infinite; we may (japeeai) remember and reflect (bah-u) a lot, but (thaah) depth/extent of Your virtues and powers (na paaiaa) is not known. 2.

 

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਜਨ ਮਾਧੌ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਹਮ ਮੀਨੇ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕਤਹੂ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

Usṯaṯ karahi ṯumrī jan māḏẖou gun gāvahi har rā▫i▫ā.  Ŧumĥ jal niḏẖ ham mīne ṯumre ṯerā anṯ na kaṯhū pā▫i▫ā. ||3||

 

(Jan = servants) the devotees (karah-i) do (tumri) Your (ustat-i) glorification, they (gaavah-i = sing) praise Your (gun) virtues, o (maadhaau = husband of Laxmi/maaiaa) Master of the world, (raaiaa = king) the Sovereign (har-i) Almighty.

(Tumh) You are (nidh-i = treasure, jal = water) the ocean and (ham) we are (meeney) fish (tumrey = your) sustained by You; we (na katahoo) have never tried to (paaiaa) known (ant-u) the extent of (teyra) Your virtues and powers. 3.

 

ਜਨ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਧਸੂਦਨ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਟੇਕ ਹੈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧॥

Jan ka▫o kirpā karahu maḏẖsūḏan har ḏevhu nām japā▫i▫ā.  Mai mūrakẖ anḏẖule nām tek hai jan Nānak gurmukẖ pā▫i▫ā. ||4||1||

 

O (madhusoodan) Almighty, please (kripa = kindness, karhu = bestow) be kind to (deyvhu = give) impart awareness of (naam-u) Naam/Divine virtues and commands to (japaaiaa) remember as guide for life, and practice.

(Mai) I (andhuley = blind) am ignorant and have (moorakh = foolish) have no virtues; please lead me to the guru to (paaiaa) obtain awareness of Naam, which (hai) is (tteyk) support/guide for life, (gurmukh-i) from the guru, says humble fourth Nanak. 4. 1.

ਕਲਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਹਸਿਆ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਨੀ ਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Kali▫ān mėhlā 4.   Har jan gun gāvaṯ hasi▫ā.   Har har bẖagaṯ banī maṯ gurmaṯ ḏẖur masṯak parabẖ likẖi▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Kaliaan. (Jan-u) a devotee of (har-i) the Almighty (hasiaa = laughs) is happy (gaavat = sing) to praise/emulate (gun) Divine virtues.

(Bhagat-i) devotion/obedience of (har-i har-i) the Almighty (bani = made) develops (mat-i) with understanding of (gurmat-i) the guru’s counsel; and the guru is found when so (likhiaa) written (mastak-i = on forehead) in destiny (dhur-i) at the source (har-i) by the Almighty (prabh-i) Master. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਪਗ ਸਿਮਰਉ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬਸਿਆ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਜਗਿ ਸਾਰੀ ਘਸਿ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਜਸੁ ਘਸਿਆ ॥੧॥

Gur ke pag simra▫o ḏin rāṯī man har har har basi▫ā.  Har har har kīraṯ jag sārī gẖas cẖanḏan jas gẖasi▫ā. ||1||

 

I (simrau) remember (pag = feet) instructions of (gur) the guru (din-u) day and (raati) night; and (basiaa = dwells) keep (har-i = God – thrice) the Almighty (man-i) in mind in thought, word and deed.

(Keerat-i = glory) authority of (har-i = God – thrice) is sung in the three regions – space, water, land -; the devotees spread God’s (jas-u) glory (saari) in the whole (jag-i) world (ghasiaa = grinding) by emulating Divine virtues, like fragrance spreads (ghas-i) by grinding (chandan) sandalwood. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਸਭਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਖੋਜਿ ਪਇਆ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਕਿਰਤ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਪਗੁ ਨਾਗਨਿ ਛੁਹਿ ਜਲਿਆ ॥੨॥

Har jan har har har liv lā▫ī sabẖ sākaṯ kẖoj pa▫i▫ā.  Ji▫o kiraṯ sanjog cẖali▫o nar ninḏak pag nāgan cẖẖuhi jali▫ā. ||2||

 

(Jan = servants) seekers of (har-i) God keep (liv) attention (laaee) fixed on (har-i = God – thrice) the Almighty, in thought, word and deed, but (saakat = worshipper of Shakti) one who turns away from God (paaiaa) engages (khoj-i) in search of other things.

(Jio) as is (sanjog-i = coincidence) the influence of (kirat) past deeds, (nar) a person (nindak = slanderer) who wishes ill for others (chalio) acts on that; his/her (pagu) foot (jaliaa = burnt) is stung (chhuh-i) with touch/bite of (naagan-i) of the serpent, i.e. the slanderer is ruined by succumbing to temptations. (Note: The serpent is considered the epitome of temptation). 2.

 

ਜਨ ਕੇ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਜਨ ਰਖਿਆ ॥ ਕਹਾ ਭਇਆ ਦੈਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਬਖੀਲੀ ਸਭ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਝਰਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥੩॥

Jan ke ṯumĥ har rākẖe su▫āmī ṯumĥ jug jug jan rakẖi▫ā.  Kahā bẖa▫i▫ā ḏaiṯ karī bakẖīlī sabẖ kar kar jẖar pari▫ā. ||3||

 

O (har-i) Almighty (suaami) Master, (tumh) You (raakhey = protector, key = of) protect (jan = = servants) those who obey You; You (rakhiaa) have protected (jan) the devotees (jug-i jug-i) through the ages – against the ill-wishers.

if (dait-i = demons) evil persons (kahaa bhaiaa = so what?) may try to (kari) do (bakheeli = backbiting) slander/harm the devotees; (sabh-i) all of them (jhar-i pariaa = are felled) are destroyed (kar-i kar-i = doing) trying to harm the devotes – for example Harnaakash tried to kill his devotee-son, Prahilad but was himself killed. 3.

 

ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਏ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥

Jeṯe jī▫a janṯ parabẖ kī▫e sabẖ kālai mukẖ garsi▫ā.  Har jan har har har parabẖ rākẖe jan Nānak saran pa▫i▫ā. ||4||2||

 

(Jeytey = as many) all (jeea jant) the creatures (prabh-i) the Almighty (keeay) has created, (sabh-i) all (grasiaa) are caught (mukh-i) in the mouth (kaalai = death) by the agents death, i.e. fall prey to temptations.

(Har-i jan) devotees of God keep (har-i = God – thrice) in mind in thought, word and deed; they (pariaa) place themselves (saran-i = in sanctuary) care and obedience of, and (raakhaey) are protected (prabh-i) by, the Master, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 4. 2.

ਕਲਿਆਨ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿ ਜਗੰਨਾਥੇ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਲਾਥੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Kali▫ān mėhlā 4.   Mere man jap jap jagaʼnnāthe.   Gur upḏes har nām ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫o sabẖ kilbikẖ ḏukẖ lāthe. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in (raag-u) Raga Kaliaan. O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (jap-u) remember and obey (jagannaathey) the Almighty Master of the world (jap-i) who needs to be remembered/obeyed, – with the guru’s guidance.

One who (dhiaaio) pays attention to (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty, all his/her (kilbikh) transgressions and resultant (dukh) sufferings (laathey = removed) are obviated. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਰਸਨਾ ਏਕ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਇ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਬਹੁ ਰਸੁਨਥੇ ॥ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲ ਸਭਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਨ ਕਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਮਨਥੇ ॥੧॥

Rasnā ek jas gā▫e na sākai baho kījai baho rasunathe.  Bār bār kẖin pal sabẖ gāvahi gun kahi na sakahi parabẖ ṯumnathe. ||1||

 

My (eyk) one (rasna) tongue (na saakai) cannot (gaaey = sing) praise Your (bah-u) numerous (jas-u = glory) virtues, please (keejai) make it (bahu) numerous (rasunthey) tongues.

Even if (sabh-i) all the creatures (gaavah-i = sing) praise Your (gun) virtues (baar baar) again and again (khin-u pal) every moment, they (na sakah-i) cannot (kah-i = say) describe/understand (sabh-i) all (tumnthey) Your virtues, o (prabh) Master. 1.

 

ਹਮ ਬਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਮ ਲੋਚਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਿਖਨਥੇ ॥ ਤੁਮ ਬਡ ਦਾਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੀਅਨ ਕੇ ਤੁਮ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਹਮ ਬਿਰਥੇ ॥੨॥

Ham baho parīṯ lagī parabẖ su▫āmī ham locẖah parabẖ ḏikẖnathe. Ŧum bad ḏāṯe jī▫a jī▫an ke ṯum jānhu ham birthe. ||2||

 

(Ham) I (lagi) have developed (bahu = much) deep (preet-i) love for (prabh) the Almighty (suaami) Master; I (lochah-i) yearn to (dikhanthey) see (prabh-u) the Almighty.

O Almighty, (tum) You are (badd) the great (daatey = giver) Sustainor of (jeea jeean) the creatures; (tum) You (jaanhu) know (ham) my (birthey = pain of separation) yearning for You. 2.

 

ਕੋਈ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪੰਥੁ ਬਤਾਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾ ਕਹੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਦਿਨਥੇ ॥ ਸਭੁ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪਉ ਅਰਪਿ ਅਰਾਪਉ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਿਲਥੇ ॥੩॥

Ko▫ī mārag panth baṯāvai parabẖ kā kaho ṯin ka▫o ki▫ā ḏinthe. Sabẖ ṯan man arpa▫o arap arāpa▫o ko▫ī melai parabẖ milthe. ||3||

 

(Kah-u) tell me, (kiaa) what should (dinthey) be given to (koee) someone who (bataavai) tells (maarag-u panth-u = path, ka = of) how to reach/find (prabh) the Almighty.

I shall (arpau) make offering, and (arap-i) give and (araapau) keep giving my service with (tan-u) body and (man-u) mind, (sabh-u) everything, to (koee) someone who (meylai = causes to meet) leads me to one who (milthey) has met/found God. 3.

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਬਹੁ ਸੋਭਾ ਹਮ ਤੁਛ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਰਨਥੇ ॥ ਹਮਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਮਰੈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਮਰਥੇ ॥੪॥੩॥

Har ke gun bahuṯ bahuṯ baho sobẖā ham ṯucẖẖ kar kar barnathe. Hamrī maṯ vasgaṯ parabẖ ṯumrai jan Nānak ke parabẖ samrathe. ||4||3||

 

(Gun) virtues (key) of (har-i) the Almighty are (bahut bahut = more and more) countless and (sobha) glory is (bahu = much) great; (ham) I (barnthey) can describe (tuchh = small, kar-i kar-i = do) a bit.

(Hamri) my (mat-i) understanding of Your virtues is (tumrai) in Your (vasgat-i = control) hands –as You impart – o (samrathey) Omnipotent (prabh) Master of (jan) humble fourth Nanak – the seeker. 4. 3.

ਕਲਿਆਨ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਅਕਥ ਸੁਨਥਈ ॥ ਧਰਮੁ ਅਰਥੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਾਮੁ ਮੋਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਨ ਪੀਛੈ ਲਗਿ ਫਿਰਥਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Kali▫ān mėhlā 4.   Mere man jap har gun akath suntha▫ī.   Ḏẖaram arath sabẖ kām mokẖ hai jan pīcẖẖai lag firtha▫ī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in (raag-u) Raga Kaliaan. O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (jap-i) remember and emulate (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty who (sunthaee = heard) is said to be (akath) indescribable.

The creature aspires to have ability to fulfill the four aspirations, namely (dharam-u) being able to do what is required, (arth-u) economic well-being and contributing to development, (kaam-u) fulfilment of desires and goals and (mokh-u) emancipation from vices in life, and from rebirth after death. (sabh-u) all these capabilities (phirthaee = wander) move and (lag-i = be, peechhai = behind) follow, i.e. come naturally to, (jan = servant) one who obeys the Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਡਭਾਗ ਮਥਈ ॥ ਜਹ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲੇਖਾ ਮਾਗੈ ਤਹ ਛੁਟੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਥਈ ॥੧॥

So har har nām ḏẖi▫āvai har jan jis badbẖāg math▫ī.  Jah ḏargahi parabẖ lekẖā māgai ṯah cẖẖutai nām ḏẖi▫ā▫itha▫ī. ||1||

 

(Jan-u) the devotee of (har-i) God (jis-u) whose (baddbhaag) good fortune manifests on (mathaee) forehead, (so) s/he (dhiaavai) pays attention to/lives by (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = greening) rejuvenating (naam-u) Divine Naam/virtues and commands.

(Dargah-i) in Divine court (jah) where (prabh-u) the Almighty (maagai) asks for (leykha) account of deeds, (tah) there, one (dhiaaeythi) paying attention/living by Naam in life (chhuttai) is freed by Divine justice – is not subjected to rebirth. 1.

 

ਹਮਰੇ ਦੋਖ ਬਹੁ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਲਗਥਈ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਲਿ ਨਾਵਾਏ ਸਭ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਗਥਈ ॥੨॥

Hamre ḏokẖ baho janam janam ke ḏukẖ ha▫umai mail lagtha▫ī. Gur ḏẖār kirpā har jal nāvā▫e sabẖ kilbikẖ pāp gath▫ī. ||2||

 

(Hamrey = our) we have influence of (dokh) faults of (bahu) numerous (janam janam = birth after birth) past lives; these are caused by (mail-u = dirt) vice of (haumai) ego (lagthaee) sticking to the mind – causing to ignore Divine commands and – resulting in (dukh-u) the pain of separation from the Almighty.

(Gur-i) the guru (dhaar-i) shows (kirpa) kindness and (naavaaey) gives bath (jal-i) in water of (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. gives awareness of and guides to live by Naam, then (sabh) all (kilbikh) transgressions and (paap) sins (gathaee) leave/end. 2.

 

ਜਨ ਕੈ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਜਥਈ ॥ ਜਹ ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਆਇ ਬਨਤੁ ਹੈ ਤਹ ਰਾਖੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਥਈ ॥੩॥

Jan kai riḏ anṯar parabẖ su▫āmī jan har har nām bẖajtha▫ī. Jah anṯī a▫osar ā▫e banaṯ hai ṯah rākẖai nām sāth▫ī. ||3||

 

(Prabh-u) the Almighty (suaami) Master is present (antar-i) in (rid) minds (kai) of (jan = servants) seekers; (jan) the seekers (japathaee) remember and act by (har-i har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating Naam/Divine virtues and commands.

(Jah) when (anti) the end (ausar-u) moment (aaey banat) comes about, i.e. when account of deeds is taken in Divine court, (tah) there Naam (raakhai) protects as (saathaee) companion, i.e. practice of Naam is taken as credit. 3.

 

ਜਨ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਓ ਜਗੰਨਥਈ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਮ ਪਾਥਰ ਰਖੁ ਬੁਡਥਈ ॥੪॥੪॥

Jan ṯerā jas gāvahi har har parabẖ har japi▫o jagaʼnnatha▫ī. Jan Nānak ke parabẖ rākẖe su▫āmī ham pāthar rakẖ budtha▫ī. ||4||4||

 

(Jan) the devotees (gaavaah-i = sing) praise and act by (teyra) Your (har-i har-i) purifying and rejuvenating (jas-u = glory) virtues and commands; they (japio) remember and obey (prabh har-i) the Almighty (jagannathaee) Master of the world.

O (prabh) Almighty (suaami) Master of (jan) humble fourth Nanak, i.e. the creatures, (ham) we (buddthaee) are drowning (paathar) stones, i.e. we tend to succumb to temptations, please (rakh-u) save us. 4. 4.

Kali▫ān mėhlā 4.   Hamrī cẖiṯvanī har parabẖ jānai.   A▫or ko▫ī ninḏ karai har jan kī parabẖ ṯā kā kahi▫ā ik ṯil nahī mānai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in (raag-u) Raga Kaliaan. (Har-i) the Almighty (prabh) Master (jaanai) knows (hamri) our deeds and (chitvani) thoughts. If (koee) someone (aur-u) else (karai) does (nind) slander of (jan) of devotees of (har-i) God, (prabh) the Almighty does not (maanai) believe (ta ka) their (kahiaa = saying) words, (ik-u) one (til-u = sesame seed) bit, i.e. if someone tries to harm devotees, the Almighty does not let that happen – protects them. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਅਉਰ ਸਭ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਿ ਅਚੁਤ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਭਗਵਾਨੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਚਰਨੀ ਆਇ ਪਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ॥੧॥

A▫or sabẖ ṯi▫āg sevā kar acẖuṯ jo sabẖ ṯe ūcẖ ṯẖākur bẖagvānai. Har sevā ṯe kāl johi na sākai cẖarnī ā▫e pavai har jānai. ||1||

 

O human being, (tiaag-i) give up worshipping/looking to (aur) others, and (kar-i = do, seyva = service) obey (achut = infallible) the Eternal (bhagvaanai) Almighty (tthaakur-u) Master (jo) who is (ooch) higher (tey) than/is above (sabh) all.

(Kaal-u = death) the agent of Divine justice (na saakai) cannot (joh-i) eye to punish, and rather (aaey) comes and (paey) places the self (charni) at feet (jaanai = of jan/devotee) of the devotee of God. 1.

 

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਸੁਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ਪੈ ਕਾਨੈ ॥ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਕੋਈ ਅਪਰਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੨॥

Jā ka▫o rākẖ le▫e merā su▫āmī ṯā ka▫o sumaṯ ḏe▫e pai kānai.  Ŧā ka▫o ko▫ī apar na sākai jā kī bẖagaṯ merā parabẖ mānai. ||2||

 

One (ja kau) whom (suaami) the Master (meyra = my) of all (raakh-i leyi) protects, IT does so (pai) by putting (sumat-i) good counsel (kaanai) in the ears (ta kau) of that person, i.e. motivates from within to obey Divine commands.

(Na koee = not any) no one (saakai) can (apar-i/aparr) reach, – to harm – one (ja ki) whose (bhagat-i) devotion/deeds (prabh) the Master (meyra = my) of all (maanai) approves. 2.

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਨ ਦੇਖੁ ਜਨ ਜੋ ਖੋਟਾ ਖਰਾ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਅਨਦੁ ਭਇਆ ਹੈ ਰਿਦ ਸੁਧ ਮਿਲੇ ਖੋਟੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਨੈ ॥੩॥

Har ke cẖoj vidān ḏekẖ jan jo kẖotā kẖarā ik nimakẖ pacẖẖānai.  Ŧā ṯe jan ka▫o anaḏ bẖa▫i▫ā hai riḏ suḏẖ mile kẖote pacẖẖuṯānai. ||3||

 

O (jan = person) human being, (deykh) see (viddaan) the wondrous (choj = play) capability (key) of (har-i) the Almighty, (jo) who in (ik) a (nimakh) instant, (pachhaanai = recognizes) distinguishes between (kharaa) genuine persons and (khotta = counterfeit) impostors.

(Ta tey) that is why (anad-u/anand) bliss of Your presence (bhaiaa hai = happens) is experienced by (jan) persons with (sudh) pure (rid) minds, i.e. with no difference between precept and practice, while (khottey = counterfeit) the impostors (pauchhutaaney) repent – for being restless in life and denial of union with the Creator. 3.

 

ਤੁਮ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਇਕੁ ਮਾਗਉ ਤੁਝ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਨੈ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਦ ਬਸਹਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਾਨੈ ॥੪॥੫॥

Ŧum har ḏāṯe samrath su▫āmī ik māga▫o ṯujẖ pāshu har ḏānai. Jan Nānak ka▫o har kirpā kar ḏījai saḏ basėh riḏai mohi har cẖarānai. ||4||5||

 

O (har-i) Almighty (samrath) Omnipotent (suaami) Master, (tum) You (daatey = giver) are beneficent; I (maagau) ask this (ik-u) one (daanai = alms) benediction (paasahu) from (tujh) You, o (har-i) Almighty. 

Please (kar-i kripa) be kind to (deejai) give this benediction (kau) to fourth Nanak – the seeker – that (charaanai) feet of You (har-i) the Almighty (sad) ever (basah-i) abide (ridai) in my mind, i.e. I ever submit to Your commands. 4. 5.

Kali▫ān mėhlā 4.   Parabẖ kījai kirpā niḏẖān ham har gun gāvhage.   Ha▫o ṯumrī kara▫o niṯ ās parabẖ mohi kab gal lāvhige. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in (raag-u) Raga Kaliaan. O (prabh) Almighty (nidhaan) treasure of (kripa) kindness, please (keejai) bestow Your grace, that (ham) I (gaavahgey) keep praising and emulating (gun) virtues of You (har-i) the Almighty.

(Hau) I (nit) ever (karau = do) have this (aas) wish/yearning (tumri) for You; (kab) when You (laavahigey = touch, gal-i = throat with throat) would embrace/accept (moh-i) me for union, o (prabh) Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਮੁਗਧ ਇਆਨ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿਗੇ ॥ ਸੁਤੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਭੂਲਿ ਬਿਗਾਰਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਤ ਭਾਵਹਿਗੇ ॥੧॥

Ham bārik mugaḏẖ i▫ān piṯā samjāvhige. Suṯ kẖin kẖin bẖūl bigār jagaṯ piṯ bẖāvhige. ||1||

 

(Ham) I am like (iaan) an ignorant (mugadh) foolish (baarik) child who makes mistakes and You, (pitaa) the father (samjhaavahigey) guide.

I, Your (sut-u) son/child (bhool-i) make mistakes and (bigaarr-i) go wrong (khin khin) every moment and You, (pit) father of (jagat) the world still (bhaavahigey) love and forgive – please give me the good sense to obey You. 1.

 

ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੁਮ ਦੇਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਹਮ ਪਾਵਹਗੇ ॥ ਮੋਹਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਉਰ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਹਮ ਜਾਵਹਗੇ ॥੨॥

Jo har su▫āmī ṯum ḏeh so▫ī ham pāvhage.  Mohi ḏūjī nāhī ṯẖa▫ur jis pėh ham jāvhage. ||2||

 

(Jo) whatever (tum) You (deyhu) give, o (har-i) Almighty (suaami) Master, (ham) I (paavahgey) get (soee) that – and am happy with it.

For (moh-i) me, there is (naahi) no (dooji = second) other (tthaau) place/source (pah-i) to (jis-u) whom (ham) I (jaavahgey) can go and ask. 2.

 

ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਭਗਤ ਤਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵਹਿਗੇ ॥ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਜੋਤਿ ਰਲਿ ਜਾਵਹਗੇ ॥੩॥

Jo har bẖāvėh bẖagaṯ ṯinā har bẖāvhige.  Joṯī joṯ milā▫e joṯ ral jāvhage. ||3||

 

But only those (bhagat) devotees (jo) who (bhaavah-i = liked) are motivated by (har-i) the Almighty, the Almighty (bhaavahi) is liked/obeyed (tina) by them.

They (milaaey = cause to meet) absorb (joti) their soul (jot-i) in the Supreme Spirit, i.e. act by Divine commands and finally (ral-i jaavahgey) merge (jot-i) in the Supreme Spirit – the Almighty. 3.

 

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੋਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਆਪਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਹਿਗੇ ॥ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਰਨਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਜ ਰਖਾਵਹਿਗੇ ॥੪॥੬॥

Har āpe ho▫e kirpāl āp liv lāvhige.  Jan Nānak saran ḏu▫ār har lāj rakẖāvhige. ||4||6||

 

(Har-i) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (hoey = being, kripaal-u = kind) kindly (laavahigey) causes to fix (liv) attention (aap-i) on IT-self.

(Jan-u) humble fourth Nanak – the seeker – has placed the self (saran-i = in sanctuary) care and obedience of Your (duaar-i) court/orders; (har-i) the Almighty (rakhavahigey) shall preserve his (laaj) honor – accept for union. 4. 6.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਣੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੇ ॥ ਸਗਲ ਭਗਤ ਜਾਚਹਿ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਤਰਣ ਹਰਿ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Pārbarahm parmesur su▫āmī ḏūkẖ nivāraṇ nārā▫iṇe.   Sagal bẖagaṯ jācẖėh sukẖ sāgar bẖav niḏẖ ṯaraṇ har cẖinṯāmaṇe. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Paarbrahm-u) the Primal Being, (parmeysur) the Supreme Master, (suaami) Master, is (naaraaeyney) refuge of the creatures (nivaaran-u) destroyer of (dookh) faults.

O (har-i) Almighty, You are (saagar) the ocean/source of (sukh) comfort/peace, (taran) the ship to get across (bhav) the world (nidh-i = treasure/water treasure) ocean (chintamaney = wish fulling gem) wish-fulfiller; (sagal) all (bhagat) devotees (jaachah-i) seek union with You. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਦਮੋਦਰ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੇ ॥ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਜਿਨ ਸ੍ਰੀਰਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਕੰਦੇ ॥੧॥

Ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl jagḏīs ḏamoḏar har anṯarjāmī gobinḏe.  Ŧe nirbẖa▫o jin sarīrām ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā gurmaṯ murār har mukanḏe. ||1||

 

The Almighty is known as (daiaal) compassionate to (deen = poor) the hapless, called (jagdees) Master of the world, (damodar = rope round the stomach, playful Krishna) Damodar (antarjaami) knower of minds, o (har-i) Almighty (gobindey) Master of the world.

Those (jin) who (dhiaaiaa) invoke/obey (sriraam-u) the revered all-pervasive (har-i) Almighty Master, (mukandey) the emancipator, (har-i) Almighty (muraar-i = killer of the demon Mur) destroyer of evil, (gurmat-i) guided by the guru, (tey) they (nirbahu) have no fear. 1.

 

ਜਗਦੀਸੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਸਰਨ ਜੋ ਆਏ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਭਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੇ ॥ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ॥੨॥੧॥੭॥

Jagḏīsur cẖaran saran jo ā▫e ṯe jan bẖav niḏẖ pār pare.  Bẖagaṯ janā kī paij har rākẖai jan Nānak āp har kirpā kare. ||2||1||7||

 

Those (jo) who (aaey) come to (saran) the sanctuary, and submit to (charan) the feet/obedience of (jagdeesur) Master of the world, (tey) those (jan) persons (parey = land, paar-i = on far shore) get across (bhav) world (nidh-i) ocean of vices, i.e. overcome vices of the world – the impediment to getting to God.

(Har-i) the Almighty (kripa karey) is kind to (raakhai) preserve (paij) honour (ki) of (bhagat = devotee, janaa = persons) those who obey Divine commands, (aap-i = self) on IT’s own, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 2. 1. 7.
