SGGS Ragas and Raagmaaala

 

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥ ਰਾਗ ਮਾਲਾ ॥

 

Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

(Raagmaala = rosary/garland) list of ragas or Indian musical measures.

 

Note: The Raagmaala lists six ragas or Indian musical measures, with five wives/raginis and eight sons/sub ragas each. Neither all ragas/raginis/sub ragas listed herein are included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, nor do all those included in SGGS find place in the list. In the Indian tradition every raga is sung at a given time of the day and night. The list seems to correspond to that with the first raga Bharau being sung in early morning. It is however hard to authenticate the sequence given therein on this basis. There is also no unanimity amongst Sikh scholars whether it should be read when doing reading of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. It is therefore only of academic interest.

 

ਰਾਗ ਏਕ ਸੰਗਿ ਪੰਚ ਬਰੰਗਨ ॥ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਲਾਪਹਿ ਆਠਉ ਨੰਦਨ ॥

 

The singers (alaapah-i) sing in (raag) ragas and (eyk = one) each (raag) raga has (panch) five (barangan) wives or Raginis (sang-i) with it; as also (aatthau) eight (nanadan = sons) sub ragas.

 

I – First Raga: Bharau

 

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਰਾਗ ਭੈਰਉ ਵੈ ਕਰਹੀ ॥ ਪੰਚ ਰਾਗਨੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਉਚਰਹੀ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਭੈਰਵੀ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੀ ॥ ਪੁੰਨਿਆਕੀ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਬੰਗਲੀ ॥ ਪੁਨਿ
ਅਸਲੇਖੀ ਕੀ ਭਈ ਬਾਰੀ ॥

 

(Pratham) the first (raag) raga (vai = they) the singers (karahi = perform) sing – in early morning – is Bhairau.  

They (ucharahi = say) sing (panch) five Raagnis (sang-i) with it:  (Pratham) first is Bhairvi, then Bilaavli; next they (gaavah-i) sing Puniaaki and Bangli; and (pun-i) then comes (baari) the turn (ki) of Asleykhi.

 

ਏ ਭੈਰਉ ਕੀ ਪਾਚਉ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

 

(Aey) these (paachau) five are (naari) wives of Bhairau raga.

 

ਪੰਚਮ ਹਰਖ ਦਿਸਾਖ ਸੁਨਾਵਹਿ ॥ ਬੰਗਾਲਮ ਮਧੁ ਮਾਧਵ ਗਾਵਹਿ ॥੧॥

 

They (sunaavah-i = say) sing Pancham, Harakh, Disaakh; they also (gaavah-i) sing Bangaalam, Madhu and Maadhav – count of six. 1.

 

ਲਲਤ ਬਿਲਾਵਲ ਗਾਵਹੀ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਭਾਂਤਿ ॥ ਅਸਟ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਭੈਰਵ ਕੇ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗਾਇਨ ਪਾਤ੍ਰ ॥੧॥

 

They (gaavahi) sing two more, namely Lalat/Lalit and Bilaaval (apuni apuni) each is its own (bhaa’nt-i) type.

These are (astt) the eight (putr) sons (key) of Bharav/Bhairau which (paatr) the singers (gaain) sing. 1.

 

II – Second Raga: Maalkaus

 

ਦੁਤੀਆ ਮਾਲਕਉਸਕ ਆਲਾਪਹਿ ॥ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਗਨੀ ਪਾਚਉ ਥਾਪਹਿ ॥

 

(Duteeaa) the second raga the singers (aalaapah-i) sing is Maalkaus; they (thaapah-i) place/sing (paachau) five (raagni) wives of the ragas (sang-i) with it. They are:

 

ਗੋਂਡਕਰੀ ਅਰੁ ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਗੰਧਾਰੀ ਸੀਹੁਤੀ ਉਚਾਰੀ ॥ ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਏ ਪਾਚਉ ਗਾਈ ॥ ਮਾਲ ਰਾਗ ਕਉਸਕ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਾਈ ॥

 

Gonddkari (ar-u) and Devgandhaari; they (uchaari) sing Gandhaari, Seehuti and Dhanaasri. They (gaaee) sing (aey) these (paachau) five (sang-i laaee) linked with (maal raag kausak) the raga Maalkaus.

 

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਸਤਅੰਗ ਮੇਵਾਰਾ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਬਲਚੰਡ ਕਉਸਕ ਉਭਾਰਾ ॥ ਖਉਖਟ ਅਉ ਭਉਰਾਨਦ ਗਾਏ ॥ ਅਸਟ ਮਾਲਕਉਸਕ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਾਏ ॥੧॥

 

They (gaaey) sing Maaru, Mastang, Meyvaara, Prabalchandd, Kausak, Ubhaara, Khaukhatt, Bhauranad; these (astt) eight sons (laaee) placed/sung (sang-i) with (maalkausak) the raga Maalkaus. 1.

 

Third raga – Hinddol-u

 

ਪੁਨਿ ਆਇਅਉ ਹਿੰਡੋਲੁ ਪੰਚ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਸਟ ਸੁਤ ॥ ਉਠਹਿ ਤਾਨ ਕਲੋਲ ਗਾਇਨ ਤਾਰ ਮਿਲਾਵਹੀ ॥੧॥

 

(Pun-i) then (aaio) comes Hinddol raga (sang-i) with (panch) five (naar-i) wives/raginis and (astt) eight (sut) sons. When the singers (taar milaavahi) join and (gaain) sing together then (taan = waves) then the mood (utthah-i) rises in (kalol) joy, i.e. the music is enjoyable. 1.

 

ਤੇਲੰਗੀ ਦੇਵਕਰੀ ਆਈ ॥ ਬਸੰਤੀ ਸੰਦੂਰ ਸੁਹਾਈ ॥ ਸਰਸ ਅਹੀਰੀ ਲੈ ਭਾਰਜਾ ॥ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਾਈ ਪਾਂਚਉ ਆਰਜਾ ॥

 

Teylangi and Deyvkari (aaee) come with this raga, Basanti, Sandoor (suhaaee) are pleasant; and (saras) the enjoyable (bhaarja = wife) raagini Aheeri. These (paa’nchau) five (aarja) raaginis are (laaee) are attached/linked (sang-i) with the raga Hi’nddol.

 

ਸੁਰਮਾਨੰਦ ਭਾਸਕਰ ਆਏ ॥ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਬਿੰਬ ਮੰਗਲਨ ਸੁਹਾਏ ॥ ਸਰਸਬਾਨ ਅਉ ਆਹਿ ਬਿਨੋਦਾ ॥ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਰਸ ਬਸੰਤ ਕਮੋਦਾ ॥ ਅਸਟ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਮੈ ਕਹੇ ਸਵਾਰੀ

 

Surmaanand and Bhaaskar (aaey) come with this Raga; Chandrbimb, Mangal (suhaaey) are pleasant, Sarasbaan (aau) and Binoda (aah-i) are there; the singers (gaavah-i) sing (saras) the enjoyable Basant and Kamoda. (Mai) I have (kahey = said) listed (astt) the eight (putr) sons of the raga (savaari) properly arranged.

 

Fourth Raag – Deepak

 

ਪੁਨਿ ਆਈ ਦੀਪਕ ਕੀ ਬਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

 

Then (aaee) comes (baari) the turn of the raga Deepak. 1.

 

ਕਛੇਲੀ ਪਟਮੰਜਰੀ ਟੋਡੀ ਕਹੀ ਅਲਾਪਿ ॥ ਕਾਮੋਦੀ ਅਉ ਗੂਜਰੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਦੀਪਕ ਕੇ ਥਾਪਿ ॥੧॥

 

Kachheyli, Pattmanjri, Ttoddi, (kahi = said, alaap-i = in music) are sung. As are Kaamodi (aau) and Goojri (tthap-i) placed (sang-i) with, i.e. are raginis of Deepak Raga. 1.

 

ਕਾਲੰਕਾ ਕੁੰਤਲ ਅਉ ਰਾਮਾ ॥ ਕਮਲਕੁਸਮ ਚੰਪਕ ਕੇ ਨਾਮਾ ॥ ਗਉਰਾ ਅਉ ਕਾਨਰਾ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨਾ ॥ ਅਸਟ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਦੀਪਕ ਕੇ
ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥

 

Kaalanka, Kuntal (aau) and Raama; also two with (naama) names of Kamalkusam and Champak. Together with (gaura) Gaurra, Kaanrra (aau) and Kaliaana, these (astt) eight are (jaanaa) known as (putr) sons of Deepak raga. 1.

 

Fifth Raag – Sriraag

 

ਸਭ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗ ਵੈ ਗਾਵਹਿ ॥ ਪਾਂਚਉ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਰੰਗਨ ਲਾਵਹਿ ॥

 

(Vai) they (sabh) all (gaavah-i) sing Sriraag raga (mil-i) together; and (laavah-i) attach (paa’nchau) the five (bara’ngan) wives (sang-i) with it.

 

ਬੈਰਾਰੀ ਕਰਨਾਟੀ ਧਰੀ ॥ ਗਵਰੀ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਆਸਾਵਰੀ ॥ ਤਿਹ ਪਾਛੈ ਸਿੰਧਵੀ ਅਲਾਪੀ ॥ ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗ ਸਿਉ ਪਾਂਚਉ ਥਾਪੀ ॥੧॥

 

They (dhari) place Bairaarri, Karnaatti with this raga; they also (gaavah-i) sing (gavri) Gaurri and Aasaavari with it. Sindhvi (alaapi) is sung (paachhai) after (tih) that; these (paanchau) five are (thaapi) placed (sio) with, i.e. these are the five wives of, Sriraag raga. 1.

 

ਸਾਲੂ ਸਾਰਗ ਸਾਗਰਾ ਅਉਰ ਗੋਂਡ ਗੰਭੀਰ ॥ ਅਸਟ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਸ੍ਰੀਰਾਗ ਕੇ ਗੁੰਡ ਕੁੰਭ ਹਮੀਰ ॥੧॥

 

Saaloo, Saarag, Saagra, Gondd, Gambheer, Gundd, Kumbh (aur) Hameer, are (astt) the eight (putr) sons of Sriraag raga. 1.

 

Sixth Raag – Megh

 

ਖਸਟਮ ਮੇਘ ਰਾਗ ਵੈ ਗਾਵਹਿ ॥ ਪਾਂਚਉ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਰੰਗਨ ਲਾਵਹਿ ॥

 

(Vai) they – the singers – (gaavah-i) sing (khasttam) the sixth (raag) raga Meygh and (laavah-i) attach (paanchau) five (barangan) wives/raaginis with it.

 

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਗੋਂਡ ਮਲਾਰੀ ਧੁਨੀ ॥ ਪੁਨਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਆਸਾ ਗੁਨ ਗੁਨੀ ॥ ਊਚੈ ਸੁਰਿ ਸੂਹਉ ਪੁਨਿ ਕੀਨੀ ॥ ਮੇਘ ਰਾਗ ਸਿਉ ਪਾਂਚਉ ਚੀਨੀ ॥੧॥

 

The five raaginis are: Soratth-i, Gondd, Malaari (dhunee) musical measures; and (gun gunee = virtuous) the knowledgeable singers (pun-i) also (gaavah-i) sing Aasa; (pun-i) after that they (keenee = perform) sing Soohau in (oochai) high (sur-i) note. These are (cheeni) known to be attached (sio) with Meygh raga. 1.

 

ਬੈਰਾਧਰ ਗਜਧਰ ਕੇਦਾਰਾ ॥ ਜਬਲੀਧਰ ਨਟ ਅਉ ਜਲਧਾਰਾ ॥ ਪੁਨਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸੰਕਰ ਅਉ ਸਿਆਮਾ ॥ ਮੇਘ ਰਾਗ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੇ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੧॥

 

Bairaadhar, Gajdhar, Keydaara, Jableedhar, Natt, (aau) and Aujaldhaara; then Sankar (aau) and Siaama. These are (naama) the names of (putran) sons of Meygh (raag) raga.

 

ਖਸਟ ਰਾਗ ਉਨਿ ਗਾਏ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਗਨੀ ਤੀਸ ॥ ਸਭੈ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਰਾਗੰਨ ਕੇ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਦਸ ਬੀਸ ॥੧॥੧॥

 

(Un-i) they – the singers – (gaaey) sing (khastt) the six (raag) ragas (sang-i) with (tees) thirty (raagni) wives. (Sabhai) all other are (putr) sons (key) of (raaga’nn) the ragas numbering (atthaarah) eighteen + (das) ten + (bees) twenty – to total forty eight. 1. 1.

Note: The first Shabad below is titled Mundaavni. Scholars have attributed mainly two meanings to it. First is ‘riddle’ and the second ‘seal’.

 

The first meaning is supported by a Slok of the third Guru on SGGS p 645 where the Guru says “thaalai vich trai vastoo paeeio” meaning three things have been pplaced in a platter which are sublime food. The platter here stands for the mind. The Guru does not name them. Then he says “Ih mudaanvni satguru paee gusikhaa ladhi bhaal-i” meaning this riddle was put for disciples of the guru to search and find/solve. This Shabad titled Mundaavni by the fifth Guru on page 1929 says “thaal vich tin vastoo paeeio, sat santokh veechaaro” the three things put in the platter and names them as (sat-i) truthful living, (santokh = contentment) happily accepting Divine commands and (veechaaro) discernment, to know what is right and what is not. This Shabad also mentions Naam being placed. Both Shabads say these things are unavoidable.

 

The second meaning namely ‘seal’ to means ‘end’ is supported on the basis that this marks end of compositions of the gurus, treating the Slok M: 5, as part of this seal. Mund/moondh means closing the lid of a container to indicate the end. This also stands to reason because the fifth Guru acknowledges that he has been able to accomplish the task of compilation of the compositions. He acknowledges kindness of the Almighty for availability of compositions of the predecessor gurus and saints. He calls the compositions “Pothi Sahib” or revered Book.

 

As may be seen there is no conflict between the two meanings; they are complementary.

 

ਮੁੰਦਾਵਣੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਥਾਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਤਿੰਨਿ ਵਸਤੂ ਪਈਓ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੋ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਪਇਓ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਭਸੁ
ਅਧਾਰੋ ॥

Munḏāvaṇī mėhlā 5.   Thāl vicẖ ṯinn vasṯū pa▫ī▫o saṯ sanṯokẖ vīcẖāro.   Amriṯ nām ṯẖākur kā pa▫i▫o jis kā sabẖas aḏẖāro.

 

(Mundaavani) the final guru composition solving a riddle mystery, (mahla 5) by the fifth Guru. (Ti’nn-i) three (vastoo) things (paeeio) have been placed (vich-i) in (thaalai = platter) the human mind – for the human being to feed, i.e. to conduct the self; they are (sat-u) truthful living, (santokh = contentment) happy acceptance of Divine will and (veechaaro) discernment.

With them has been placed (a’mmrit) the life-giving Naam/virtues and commands (ka) of (tthaakur) the Master, (jis ka) whose (adhaaro) support (sabhas-u) everyone has, i.e. everyone is to live by Naam as guide.

 

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਖਾਵੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਭੁੰਚੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਉਧਾਰੋ ॥ ਏਹ ਵਸਤੁ ਤਜੀ ਨਹ ਜਾਈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਰਖੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੋ ॥ ਤਮ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਚਰਨ ਲਗਿ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਸਾਰੋ ॥੧॥

Je ko kẖāvai je ko bẖuncẖai ṯis kā ho▫e uḏẖāro.   Ėh vasaṯ ṯajī nah jā▫ī niṯ niṯ rakẖ ur ḏẖāro.  Ŧam sansār cẖaran lag ṯarī▫ai sabẖ Nānak barahm pasāro. ||1||

 

(Jey ko) whosoever (khaavai = eats, bhunchai = enjoys) lovingly complies with Naam (udhaaro) emancipation (hoey) happens (ka) of (tis) that person, i.e. s/he does not fall prey to vices, attains union with God and is not reborn.

(Eyh) this (vast-u) thing, – complying with Naam – (na jaaee = cannot, taji = given up) is essential; (rakho) keep (ur-i dhaaro) in mind (nit nit) forever – in thought, word and deed.

(Tam = dark) blinding (sansaar-u = world) temptations of the world-play (tareeaai = swim across) are overcome by (lag-i) touching (charan) feet, i.e. submitting to commands of (braham) Creator whose writ applies to (sabh) all (pasaaro = expanse) creation, says the fifth Guru. 1.

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਤੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈਨੋ ਜੋਗੁ ਕੀਤੋਈ ॥ ਮੈ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿਆਰੇ ਕੋ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਆਪੇ ਤਰਸੁ ਪਇਓਈ ॥

Salok mėhlā 5.   Ŧerā kīṯā jāṯo nāhī maino jog kīṯo▫ī.  Mai nirguṇi▫āre ko guṇ nāhī āpe ṯaras pa▫i▫o▫ī.

 

(Slok) verse (mahla 5) by the fifth Guru. O Almighty, I have not (jaato) acknowledged/realized (teyra) Your (keetaa = doing) kindness to me; You (keetoee) made (maino) me (jog-u) the capable – to accomplish compilation of this Granth/holy book.

(Mai) I am (nirguniaarey) merit-less, have (ko naahi = not any) no (gun-u = virtue) capability, You (paiaoee) bestowed (taras-u = pity) compassion (aapey) on Your own – to enable me.

 

ਤਰਸੁ ਪਇਆ ਮਿਹਰਾਮਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਜਣੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਥੀਵੈ ਹਰਿਆ ॥੧॥

Ŧaras pa▫i▫ā mihrāmaṯ ho▫ī saṯgur sajaṇ mili▫ā.  Nānak nām milai ṯāʼn jīvāʼn ṯan man thīvai hari▫ā. ||1||

 

Your (paiaa) showing (taras-u) compassion (hoee = happened) bestowed (mihraamat) grace and I (miliaa) found (sajan-u = friend) helpful (satigur-u) true guru, i.e. collection of compositions/teachings of the predecessor gurus and saints.

Now when (milai = obtained) I am conscious of Naam/Divine virtues and commands – imparted by the guru – (taa’n) then I (jeevaa’n) live; my (tan-u) body and (man-u) mind (theeavai) become (hariaa = green) rejuvenated, i.e. have the strength to overcome temptations, and attain union with You, says fifth Nanak. 1.

Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.   Salok mėhlā 9.

 

Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance. (Slok) verses of (Mahla 9) of the ninth Guru.

 

ਗੁਨ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗਾਇਓ ਨਹੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥ ਕੀਨੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਮਨਾ ਜਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਲ ਕਉ ਮੀਨੁ ॥੧॥

Gun gobinḏ gā▫i▫o nahī janam akārath kīn.   Kaho Nānak har bẖaj manā jih biḏẖ jal ka▫o mīn. ||1||

 

One who does not (gaaiaao = sung) praise/emulate (gun) virtues of (gobind = master of the world) the Almighty, s/he (keen = made, akaarath = waste) wastes (janam-u) human birth – the opportunity to emulate Divine virtues and obey Divine commands which enable union with the Almighty.

O (manaa = mind) human being, (kah-u = say) remember to (bhaj-u) invoke (har-i) the Almighty to attain peace, (jih = which, bidh-i = way) like (meen-u) the fish relies for its life (kau) on (jal) water, (kah-u) says ninth Nanak. 1.

 

ਬਿਖਿਅਨ ਸਿਉ ਕਾਹੇ ਰਚਿਓ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਹੋਹਿ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਾ ਪਰੈ ਨ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸ ॥੨॥

Bikẖi▫an si▫o kāhe racẖi▫o nimakẖ na hohi uḏās.   Kaho Nānak bẖaj har manā parai na jam kī fās. ||2||

 

O human being (kaahey) why are you (rachio) engrossed (siau) with (bikhian) vices; you do not (hoh-i = be, udaas-u = withdrawn) take the mind off them even (nimakh) for a moment.

O (manaa = mind) human being, (bhaj-u) invoke (har-i) the Almighty, so that (phaas) noose (ki) of (jam) Divine justice is not (parai) put – round your neck, i.e. so that you are not held back from union with the Almighty and put in cycles of reincarnation, (kah-u) says ninth Nanak. 2.

 

ਤਰਨਾਪੋ ਇਉ ਹੀ ਗਇਓ ਲੀਓ ਜਰਾ ਤਨੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਾ ਅਉਧ ਜਾਤੁ ਹੈ ਬੀਤਿ ॥੩॥

Ŧarnāpo i▫o hī ga▫i▫o lī▫o jarā ṯan jīṯ.   Kaho Nānak bẖaj har manā a▫oḏẖ jāṯ hai bīṯ. ||3||

 

(Tarnaapo) youth (gaio = goes) passes (iau) like this – being engrossed in vices – (hi) only, and (jaraa) old age (jeet-i) conquers (tan-u) the body, i.e. the body progressively weakens and cannot focus on God.

O (manaa = mind) human being, (kah-u = say) remember to (bhaj-u) invoke (har-i) the Almighty, as (audh) life (jaat-u hai) is (beet-i) passing, i.e. you may no longer be able to play your role of human life when the end comes, says ninth Nanak. 3.

 

ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਓ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਪਹੂਚਿਓ ਆਨਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਰ ਬਾਵਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਨ ਭਜੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੪॥

Biraḏẖ bẖa▫i▫o sūjẖai nahī kāl pahūcẖi▫o ān.   Kaho Nānak nar bāvre ki▫o na bẖajai bẖagvān. ||4||

 

It is (nahi) not (soojhai) realized, one (bhaio) becomes (birad-i) old, and then (kaal-u) death (pahoochio aan-i) arrives.

(Kahu) says ninth Nanak: O (baavrey) crazy (nar) person, (kiau) why do you not (bhajai) invoke (bhgvaan-u) the Almighty Creator. 4.

 

ਧਨੁ ਦਾਰਾ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਸਗਲ ਜਿਨਿ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿ ॥ ਇਨ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗੀ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੫॥

Ḏẖan ḏārā sampaṯ sagal jin apunī kar mān.   In mai kacẖẖ sangī nahī Nānak sācẖī jān. ||5||

 

(Dhan-u) wealth, (daara) wife/spouse and (sagal) all (sampat-i) belongings (jin-i) whom you (kar-i = make, maan-i = believe) consider your (apuni) own – forever and commit transgressions for their sake.

(Kachh-u nahi = not any) nothing (mai) amongst (in) these (sangi = companion) accompanies to the hereafter, – to help when account of deeds is taken and consequences have to be faced; (jaan-i) be aware of this (saachi) truth, says ninth Nanak. 5.

 

ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਭੈ ਹਰਨ ਹਰਿ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੇ ਨਾਥ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਨੀਐ ਸਦਾ ਬਸਤੁ ਤੁਮ ਸਾਥਿ ॥੬॥

Paṯiṯ uḏẖāran bẖai haran har anāth ke nāth.   Kaho Nānak ṯih jānī▫ai saḏā basaṯ ṯum sāth. ||6||

 

(Har-i) the Almighty is (naath) the Master (key) of (anaath = master-less) the hapless and (udhaaran) lifts (patit = apostate) those fallen to vices – and thus saves from rebirth.

We should (jaaneeai) know that (tih = that) the Almighty (sadaa) ever (basat) abides/remains (saath-i) with (tum) you, (kahu) says ninth Nanak. 6.

 

ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਜਿਹ ਤੋ ਕਉ ਦੀਓ ਤਾਂ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਕੀਨ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਰ ਬਾਵਰੇ ਅਬ ਕਿਉ ਡੋਲਤ ਦੀਨ ॥੭॥

Ŧan ḏẖan jih ṯo ka▫o ḏī▫o ṯāʼn si▫o nehu na kīn.   Kaho Nānak nar bāvre ab ki▫o dolaṯ ḏīn. ||7||

 

The Almighty (jih) who (deeo) gave (to kau) you (tan-u) the body and (dhan-u) wealth, you do not (keen = do) bear (neyhu) love (sio) for (taa’n) that, i.e. you enjoy benedictions given by, but not obey, the Almighty.

O (baavrey) crazy (nar) person, (kiau) why are you (ddolat) swayed – by temptations and forgotten your (deen) duty – to obey the Master, says ninth Nanak. 7.

 

ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਸੁਖ ਦੀਓ ਅਰੁ ਜਿਹ ਨੀਕੇ ਧਾਮ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਕਾਹਿ ਨ ਰਾਮੁ ॥੮॥

Ŧan ḏẖan sampai sukẖ ḏī▫o ar jih nīke ḏẖām.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā simraṯ kāhi na rām. ||8||

 

The Almighty (jih) who (deeo) gave (tan-u) the body, (dhan-u) money (sampai) property, (sukh) comforts (ar-u) and (neekey) great (dhaam) mansions.

Says ninth Nanak: (Sun-u) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being, you (kaahey na = why not?) should (simrat = remember) acknowledge, and obey, that (raam-u) all-pervasive Master. 8.

 

ਸਭ ਸੁਖ ਦਾਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਸਰ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੯॥

Sabẖ sukẖ ḏāṯā rām hai ḏūsar nāhin ko▫e.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā ṯih simraṯ gaṯ ho▫e. ||9||

 

(Raam) the all-pervasive Almighty is (daataa) the provider of (sabh) all (sukh) comforts, (naahi koey = not any) none (doosar = second) else does that.

Says ninth Nanak: (Sun-u) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being, (gat-i) freedom from temptations in life, union with the Almighty and freedom rebirth after death, (hoey) is attained (simrat) by remembrance/obedience of (tih) that Master. 9.

ਜਿਹ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਿਹ ਭਜੁ ਰੇ ਤੈ ਮੀਤ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਅਉਧ ਘਟਤ ਹੈ ਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥

Jih simraṯ gaṯ pā▫ī▫ai ṯih bẖaj re ṯai mīṯ.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā a▫oḏẖ gẖataṯ hai nīṯ. ||10||

 

(Rey) o my (meet) friends, (tai) you should (bhaj-u) invoke (tih = that) the Almighty (simrat) by remembering/obeying (jih) whom (gat-i) freedom from temptations in life and rebirth after death (hoey) is (paaeeai) attained.

Says ninth Nanak: (Sun-u) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being – do not delay doing the above as – (audh) lifespan to do that (ghattat) is being reducing (neet = ever) every moment – and death may come anytime. 10.

 

ਪਾਂਚ ਤਤ ਕੋ ਤਨੁ ਰਚਿਓ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਚਤੁਰ ਸੁਜਾਨ ॥ ਜਿਹ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਲੀਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਮੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧੧॥

Pāʼncẖ ṯaṯ ko ṯan racẖi▫o jānhu cẖaṯur sujān.   Jih ṯe upji▫o nānkā līn ṯāhi mai mān. ||11||

 

The Creator (rachio) made (tan-u) the body (ko) of (panch) five (tat-u) elements – earth/clay, water, air, fire/energy and space, but you (jaanhu) consider yourself (chatur) clever and (sujaan) wise.

Message: you were to be tolerant like the earth, pure like water, friendly to all like air, warm like fire and available to all like space, but you act by self-will.

(Maan-u = accept) remember, the Creator (tey) from (jih) whom you (upjio) have been created, you have to (leen) merge (mai) in (taah-i) that and will have to account for your deeds, o (naanka) ninth Nanak – o all creatures. 11.

 

ਘਟ ਘਟ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਬਸੈ ਸੰਤਨ ਕਹਿਓ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਭਜੁ ਮਨਾ ਭਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੧੨॥

Gẖat gẖat mai har jū basai sanṯan kahi▫o pukār.   Kaho Nānak ṯih bẖaj manā bẖa▫o niḏẖ uṯrėh pār. ||12||

 

(Santan) the saints (kahio = say, pukaar-i = calling out) proclaim that (joo/ji) the revered (har-i) Almighty (vasai) abides (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in all creatures.

O (manaa = mind) human being, (kah-u = say) remember to (bhaj-u) invoke (har-i) the Almighty, and you shall (utrah-i = land, paar-i = on far shore) get across (nidh-i = treasure/expanse of, bhav = world) the world ocean, i.e. not be born again into the world but merge with the Creator, (kahu) says ninth Nanak. 12.

 

ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਿਹ ਪਰਸੈ ਨਹੀ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਸੋ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੧੩॥

Sukẖ ḏukẖ jih parsai nahī lobẖ moh abẖimān.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā so mūraṯ bẖagvān. ||13||

 

One (jih) whom (sukh-u) comfort, (dukh-u) discomfort, (lobh-u) greed, (moh-u) worldly attachment or (abhimaan-u) vanity does not (parsai) touch, i.e. one who is beyond these.

(Sun-u) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being, (so) that person is (moorat = picture) embodiment of (bhagvaan) the Almighty, Says ninth Nanak. 13.

 

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਿਹਿ ਕੰਚਨ ਲੋਹ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੈ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੧੪॥

Usṯaṯ ninḏi▫ā nāhi jihi kancẖan loh samān.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā mukaṯ ṯāhi ṯai jān. ||14||

 

One to whom (ustat-i) praise and (nindiaa) slander (naah-i = not) do not make difference and to whom (Kanchan) gold and (loh) iron are (samaan-i) equal i.e. who is not enchanted by wealth.

(Sun-i) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being, (tai) you should (jaan-i) consider (taah-i) that person (mukat-i) free from attachments and temptations, says ninth Nanak. 14.

 

ਹਰਖੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੈਰੀ ਮੀਤ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੈ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੧੫॥

Harakẖ sog jā kai nahī bairī mīṯ samān.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā mukaṯ ṯāhi ṯai jān. ||15||

 

One (kai) for (ja) whom there is (nahi) no (harakh-u) joy or (sog-u) sorrow, i.e. who is happy with Divine will and who considers (bairi) opponents and (meet) friends are (samaan-i) equal.

(Sun-i) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being, (tai) you should (jaan-i) consider (taah-i) that person (mukat-i) free from attachments and temptations, says ninth Nanak. 15.

 

ਭੈ ਕਾਹੂ ਕਉ ਦੇਤ ਨਹਿ ਨਹਿ ਭੈ ਮਾਨਤ ਆਨ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਖਾਨਿ ॥੧੬॥

Bẖai kāhū ka▫o ḏeṯ nėh nėh bẖai mānaṯ ān.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā gi▫ānī ṯāhi bakẖān. ||16||

 

One who neither (deyt = gives, bhai = fear) intimidates (kaahoo kau) anyone, nor (maanat aan = accepts, bhai = fear) gets intimidated.

(Sun-i) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being, (bakhaan-i) call/recognize (taah-i) that person (giaani) aware of Divine virtues and commands, Says ninth Nanak. 16.

 

ਜਿਹਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਗਲੀ ਤਜੀ ਲੀਓ ਭੇਖ ਬੈਰਾਗ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਨਰ ਮਾਥੈ ਭਾਗੁ ॥੧੭॥

Jihi bikẖi▫ā saglī ṯajī lī▫o bẖekẖ bairāg.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā ṯih nar māthai bẖāg. ||17||

 

One (jih) who (taji) forsakes/overcomes (sagli) all (bikhiaa = poison that kills) enticements to commit vices and (leeo) adopts (bheykh) garb of (bairaag) an ascetic, i.e. overcome temptations.

(Sun-u) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being, (tih) that person has (bhaag-u) good fortune written on (maathai) the forehead, says ninth Nanak. 17.

 

ਜਿਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਤਜੀ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਭਇਓ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧੮॥

Jihi mā▫i▫ā mamṯā ṯajī sabẖ ṯe bẖa▫i▫o uḏās.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā ṯih gẖat barahm nivās. ||18||

 

Those (jih) who (taji) forsake (mamta) attachment to (maaiaa) the world-play – of relations, wealth, rivalries and so on, and (bhio) remains (udaas-u) unattached (tey) from (sabh) all.

(Sun-u) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being, (tih) that person’s (ghatt-i) mind has (nivaas-u) abode of (brahm) the Creator in it, i.e. God abides in a clean mind, says ninth Nanak. 18.

 

ਜਿਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਰੁ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਸਾਚੀ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧੯॥

Jihi parānī ha▫umai ṯajī karṯā rām pacẖẖān.   Kaho Nānak vahu mukaṯ nar ih man sācẖī mān. ||19||

 

(Praani) the creature (jih-i) who (pachhaan-i = recognizes) understands/obeys commands of (karta) the Creator and (taji) gives up (haumai = ego) the idea that s/he can do anything.

O (man = mind) human being, (vah-u) that (nar) person is (mukat-i) free from temptations in the world and not liable to reincarnation; (maan-u) accept (ih) this as (saachi) the truth, (kahu) says ninth Nanak. 19.

 

ਭੈ ਨਾਸਨ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਨ ਕਲਿ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਜੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੈ ਸਫਲ ਹੋਹਿ ਤਿਹ ਕਾਮ ॥੨੦॥

Bẖai nāsan ḏurmaṯ haran kal mai har ko nām.   Nis ḏin jo Nānak bẖajai safal hohi ṯih kām. ||20||

 

Awareness/obedience of Naam/virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty (haran) takes away (durmat-i) evil counsel/ideas, – enables not to transgress and hence -, (naasan = destroys) obviates (bhai = fear) apprehension of retribution, (mai) in this (kal-i) age of conflicts.

One (jo) who (bhajai) praises/obeys the Almighty (nis-i) night and (din-u) day, – s/he commits no vices and -, (tih = that) his/her (kaam/kaamna) wish to find the Almighty (hoh-i) is (saphal = fruitful) fulfilled, says ninth Nanak. 20.

 

ਜਿਹਬਾ ਗੁਨ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਹੁ ਕਰਨ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਪਰਹਿ ਨ ਜਮ ਕੈ ਧਾਮ ॥੨੧॥

Jihbā gun gobinḏ bẖajahu karan sunhu har nām.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā parėh na jam kai ḏẖām. ||21||

 

O human being, (bhajahu) praise (gun) virtues of (gobind = master of the world) the Almighty with (jihbaa) the tongue, and with (karan) the ears (sunhu) listen/pay attention to Naam-u/commands.

And you will not (parah-i) be put/held in (dhaam = house) detention by (jam) Divine justice, i.e. there will be no impediment to union with the Almighty, (sun-u) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being, says ninth Nanak. 21.

 

ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਤਜੈ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਨ ਤਰੈ ਅਉਰਨ ਲੇਤ ਉਧਾਰ ॥੨੨॥

Jo parānī mamṯā ṯajai lobẖ moh ahaʼnkār.   Kaho Nānak āpan ṯarai a▫uran leṯ uḏẖār. ||22||

 

(Praani) the creature (jo) who (tajai) gives up (mamta) aachment/possessiveness, (lobh) greed, (moh) worldly attachments and (ahankaar) vanity/arrogance.

That person (aapan = self) him/her-self (tarai = swims) overcomes vices in life and (leyt udhaar) lifts (auran) others above them, (kahu) says ninth Nanak. 22.

 

ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਅਰੁ ਪੇਖਨਾ ਐਸੇ ਜਗ ਕਉ ਜਾਨਿ ॥ ਇਨ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੨੩॥

Ji▫o supnā ar pekẖnā aise jag ka▫o jān.   In mai kacẖẖ sācẖo nahī Nānak bin bẖagvān. ||23||

 

(Jio) as is (supna) a dream (ar-u) and (peykhna) seeing a play being enacted, i.e. they are not real, (jaan-i = know) look (kau) at (jag) the world (aisey) similarly, i.e. all relationships are transitory and end with death.

(Kachh-u nahi) nothing (mai) in (in) these is (saacho = true) forever, (bin-u) except (bhagvaan) the Almighty, says ninth Nanak. 23.

Message: Do not get attached to relatives and wealth etc. as they do not accompany on death; only the Almighty does and can help in the hereafter.

 

ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਡੋਲਤ ਨੀਤ ॥ ਕੋਟਨ ਮੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋਊ ਨਾਰਾਇਨੁ ਜਿਹ ਚੀਤਿ ॥੨੪॥
Nis ḏin mā▫i▫ā kārne parānī dolaṯ nīṯ.   Kotan mai Nānak ko▫ū nārā▫in jih cẖīṯ. ||24||

 

(Praani) the creature (neet) ever (ddolat = swayed) commits transgressions (nis-i) night and (din-u) day (kaarney) for the sake of (maaiaa) money.

There is (ko-oo) some rare one (mai) in (kottan) crores (jih) who has (naaraain-u = abode of creatures) the Almighty (cheet-i) in mind – s/he overcomes temptations, says ninth Nanak. 24.

 

ਜੈਸੇ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨੀਤ ॥ ਜਗ ਰਚਨਾ ਤੈਸੇ ਰਚੀ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਮੀਤ ॥੨੫॥

Jaise jal ṯe buḏbuḏā upjai binsai nīṯ.   Jag racẖnā ṯaise racẖī kaho Nānak sun mīṯ. ||25||

 

(Jaisey) like (budbudaa) a bubble (upjai) rises (tey) from (jal) water and (neet) always (binsai = destroyed) merges back into water.

(Sun-i) listen my (meet) friends; the Creator has (rachi) made (rachna = creation) phenomenon of (jag) the world (taisey) likewise – those born are to die, (kahu) says ninth Nanak. 25.

 

ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਅੰਧੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਪਰਤ ਤਾਹਿ ਜਮ ਫੰਧ ॥੨੬॥

Parānī kacẖẖū na cẖeṯ▫ī maḏ mā▫i▫ā kai anḏẖ.   Kaho Nānak bin har bẖajan paraṯ ṯāhi jam fanḏẖ. ||26||

 

(Praani) the creature/human being (andh-u = blind, mad-i = with intoxication) inebriated by (maaiaa) temptations of the world-play (cheytaee) remembers (kachhoo na) nothing – of the Creator’s directions on the role of life.

(Phandh) noose of (jam) Divine justice is (parat) put on (taah-i = that) him/her, i.e. s/he is not allowed to reach God and remains in cycles of births and deaths, (bin-u = without) for not (bhajan) invoking (har-i) the Almighty, (kahu) says ninth Nanak. 26.

 

ਜਉ ਸੁਖ ਕਉ ਚਾਹੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਰਨਿ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਲੇਹ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਦੁਰਲਭ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਦੇਹ ॥੨੭॥

Ja▫o sukẖ ka▫o cẖāhai saḏā saran rām kī leh.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā ḏurlabẖ mānukẖ ḏeh. ||27||

 

O Human being, if you (chaahai) want to have (sukh) comfort (sadaa) forever (leyh) take (saran-i) sanctuary, i.e. submit to care and obedience, (ki) of (raam) the Almighty.

(Sun-i) listen, o (manaa = mind) human being, – this is possible only in (maanukh) human (deyh = body) birth, which is (durlabh) hard to get – you may not get this opportunity again – (kahu) says ninth Nanak. 27.

 

ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਧਾਵਹੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਲੋਗ ਅਜਾਨ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਰਾਨ ॥੨੮॥

Mā▫i▫ā kāran ḏẖāvhī mūrakẖ log ajān.   Kaho Nānak bin har bẖajan birthā janam sirān. ||28||

 

(Moorakh = foolish) ignorant persons are (ajaan) unaware that human birth is the opportunity to unite with the Creator; they (dhaavahi = run, kaaran-i = for the sake of) pursue transitory pleasures and gains (maaiaa) of money.

Their (janam-u) human birth (siraan) passes (birtha) in vain (bin-u = without) for not (bhajan) invoking (har-i) the Almighty, (kahu) says ninth Nanak. 28.

 

ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਭਜੈ ਰੂਪ ਰਾਮ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਨੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੨੯॥

Jo parānī nis ḏin bẖajai rūp rām ṯih jān.   Har jan har anṯar nahī Nānak sācẖī mān. ||29||

 

(Praani) the creature (jo) who (bhajai) invokes Naam/Divine commands, (jaan-u) consider (tih) that person (roop) the embodiment of (raam) the Almighty.

There is no (antar-u) difference between (har-i) the Almighty and (jan = servant) one who complies with commands of (har-i) the Almighty; (maan-u) accept this as (saachi) truth, says ninth Nanak. 29.

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਫਧਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਿਸਰਿਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਜੀਵਨ ਕਉਨੇ ਕਾਮ ॥੩੦॥

Man mā▫i▫ā mai faḏẖ rahi▫o bisri▫o gobinḏ nām.   Kaho Nānak bin har bẖajan jīvan ka▫une kām. ||30||

 

(Man-u) the mind which (rahio) remains, phadh-i = held) caught in (maaiaa) temptations of the world-play, (bisrio) forgets Naam/commands of (gobind = master of the world) the Creator.

His/her (jeevan = life) human birth (kauney = what, kaam = use?) is wasted (bin-u = without) by not (bhajan) invoking (har-i) the Almighty, (kahu) says ninth Nanak. 30.

 

ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਅੰਧੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਰਤ ਤਾਹਿ ਜਮ ਫੰਧ ॥੩੧॥

Parānī rām na cẖeṯ▫ī maḏ mā▫i▫ā kai anḏẖ.   Kaho Nānak har bẖajan bin paraṯ ṯāhi jam fanḏẖ. ||31||

 

(Praani) the creature/human being (andh-u = blind, mad-i = with intoxication) inebriated by (maaiaa) temptations of the world-play does not (cheytaee) remember/obey (raam-u) the Almighty.

(Phandh) the noose of (jam) Divine justice is (parat) put on (taah-i = that) him/her, i.e. s/he is held back from union with God and put in cycles of births and deaths, (bin-u = without) for not (bhajan) invoking (har-i) the Almighty, (kahu) says ninth Nanak. 31.

 

ਸੁਖ ਮੈ ਬਹੁ ਸੰਗੀ ਭਏ ਦੁਖ ਮੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਮਨਾ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੋਇ ॥੩੨॥

Sukẖ mai baho sangī bẖa▫e ḏukẖ mai sang na ko▫e.   Kaho Nānak har bẖaj manā anṯ sahā▫ī ho▫e. ||32||

 

(Bah-u) plenty of people (bhaey) become (sangi) companions (mai) in (sukh = comfort) prosperity, but (na koey) no one (sang-i) keeps company/comes near in (dukh) distress; so do not get attached to people.

O (manaa = mind) human being, (bhaj-u) praise/obey (har-i) the Almighty who alone (hoey) is (sahaaee) of help (ant-i) until the end, says ninth Nanak. 32.

 

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਭਰਮਤ ਫਿਰਿਓ ਮਿਟਿਓ ਨ ਜਮ ਕੋ ਤ੍ਰਾਸੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਮਨਾ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਬਾਸੁ ॥੩੩॥

Janam janam bẖarmaṯ firi▫o miti▫o na jam ko ṯarās.   Kaho Nānak har bẖaj manā nirbẖai pāvahi bās. ||33||

 

The soul which (bharmat = is deluded) ignores directions of the Creator, (phirio = wanders) goes through (janam janam) birth after birth; its (traas-u) fear of being detained by (jam) Divine justice from reaching God, does not (mittio = erased) end.

O (manaa = mind) human being, (bhaj-u) invoke (har-i) the Almighty, and you shall (paavah-i) attain the state of (nirbhai) fearlessness, i.e. not be subject to detention by Divine justice, and merge in God, (kah-u = say) says ninth Nanak. 33.

 

ਜਤਨ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਮਿਟਿਓ ਨ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਧਿਓ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੩੪॥
Jaṯan bahuṯ mai kar rahi▫o miti▫o na man ko mān.   Ḏurmaṯ si▫o Nānak faḏẖi▫o rākẖ leho bẖagvān. ||34||

 

(Mai) I (kar-i rahio) have made (bahut-u) numerous (jatan) efforts, but (maan-u) pride/vanity (ko) of (man) the mind, i.e. acting by self-will, is not (mittio = erased) removed.

I am (phadhio) caught (durmat-i) in evil counsel/thinking, i.e. I ignore Naam/Divine commands and pursue other ideas; please (raakh-u leyhu) save me, o (bhagvaan) Almighty Master, supplicates ninth Nanak on behalf of the creatures. 34.

 

ਬਾਲ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਅਰੁ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਤੀਨਿ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਜਾਨਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੩੫॥

Bāl ju▫ānī ar biraḏẖ fun ṯīn avasthā jān.   Kaho Nānak har bẖajan bin birthā sabẖ hī mān. ||35||

 

Everyone (jaan-i) knows life has (teen-i) three (avastha) states, namely (baal) childhood, (juaani) youth (ar-u) and (phun-i) then (biradh-i) old age

(Maan-u) consider than (sabh hi) all of them (birtha) wasted (bin-u) without (bhajan) praising/obeying (har-i) the Almighty, says ninth Nanak. 35.

Message: Divine commands must be obeyed at all stages of life and not postponed as some people do.

 

ਕਰਣੋ ਹੁਤੋ ਸੁ ਨਾ ਕੀਓ ਪਰਿਓ ਲੋਭ ਕੈ ਫੰਧ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਮਿਓ ਰਮਿ ਗਇਓ ਅਬ ਕਿਉ ਰੋਵਤ ਅੰਧ ॥੩੬॥

Karṇo huṯo so nā kī▫o pari▫o lobẖ kai fanḏẖ.   Nānak sami▫o ram ga▫i▫o ab ki▫o rovaṯ anḏẖ. ||36||

 

O human being – the end of life has come, you (pario = put) were caught in (phandh) trap (kai) of (lobh = greed) enticements in life and did not (keeo) do (su) that what you (huto) were told (karno) to do by the Creator.

O (andh = blind) blind human being, (kiau = why?) it is no use (rovat) wailing/repenting (ab) now when (samio) time to act (ram-i gaio) has passed and death arrived, says ninth Nanak. 36.

 

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਰਮਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਿਕਸਤ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਮੀਤ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਜਿਉ ਛਾਡਿਤ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਭੀਤਿ ॥੩੭॥

Man mā▫i▫ā mai ram rahi▫o niksaṯ nāhin mīṯ.   Nānak mūraṯ cẖiṯar ji▫o cẖẖādiṯ nāhin bẖīṯ. ||37||

 

One whose (man-u) mind (ram-i rahio) is engrossed (mai) in (maaiaa) attachment to the world-play, s/he cannot (niksat) come out by the self, o (meet) friends.

It is (jiau) like (moorat-i) a picture (chitr) painted (bheet-i) on a wall does not (chhaaddit) leave it, i.e. it is hard to overcome temptations one’s own, i.e. without the guru’s guidance, says ninth Nanak. 37.

 

ਨਰ ਚਾਹਤ ਕਛੁ ਅਉਰ ਅਉਰੈ ਕੀ ਅਉਰੈ ਭਈ ॥ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਰਹਿਓ ਠਗਉਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਾਸੀ ਗਲਿ ਪਰੀ ॥੩੮॥

Nar cẖāhaṯ kacẖẖ a▫or a▫urai kī a▫urai bẖa▫ī.   Cẖiṯvaṯ rahi▫o ṯẖaga▫ur Nānak fāsī gal parī. ||38||

 

(Nar) a person (chaahat = desires) plans (kachh-u) something (aur-u) else/different but (aurai) something else from that (aurai) other thing (bhaee) happens.

S/he (chitvat rahio) thinks of (tthagaur) deceiving someone but it (paree = put) becomes (phaasee) noose round his/her (gal-i) neck, i.e. God is just and one reaps what one sows, says ninth Nanak. 38.

 

ਜਤਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੁਖ ਕੇ ਕੀਏ ਦੁਖ ਕੋ ਕੀਓ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੩੯॥

Jaṯan bahuṯ sukẖ ke kī▫e ḏukẖ ko kī▫o na ko▫e.   Kaho Nānak sun re manā har bẖāvai so ho▫e. ||39||

 

One (kee-ey) makes (bahut) numerous (jatan) efforts (key = of) for the sake of (sukh) comforts, but does not (keeo) make (koey) any for (dukh) distress/adversity.

Says ninth Nanak: (Sun-i) listen (rey) o (manaa = mind) human being, what (bhaavai) pleases (har-i) the Almighty (so) that (hoey) happens, i.e. God is just; one gets what one deserves, says ninth Nanak. 39.

 

ਜਗਤੁ ਭਿਖਾਰੀ ਫਿਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨ ਸਿਮਰੁ ਤਿਹ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਕਾਮ ॥੪੦॥

Jagaṯ bẖikẖārī firaṯ hai sabẖ ko ḏāṯā rām.   Kaho Nānak man simar ṯih pūran hovėh kām. ||40||

 

(Jagat-u = world) the creatures are (bhikhaari) beggars (phirat-u) going about begging, and (raam) the Almighty is (daataa = giver) benevolent giver (ko) to (sabh) all.

O (man = mind) human being (simar-u) invoke and obey (tih = that) the Almighty so that your (kaam/kaamna) wishes (hovah-i) are (pooran) fulfilled, says ninth Nanak. 40.

 

ਝੂਠੈ ਮਾਨੁ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੈ ਜਗੁ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਜਿਉ ਜਾਨੁ ॥ ਇਨ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਿਓ ਬਖਾਨਿ ॥੪੧॥

Jẖūṯẖai mān kahā karai jag supne ji▫o jān.   In mai kacẖẖ ṯero nahī Nānak kahi▫o bakẖān. ||41||

 

O human being, (kahaa) why do you (karai) display (maan-u) pride of (jhootthai = false/impermanent) transitory/perishable relatives and wealth; (jaan-u = know) consider relationships of (jag) the world (jio) like (supney) a dream.

(Kachh-u nahi) nothing (mai) amongst (in) these is (teyro) yours permanently – they will be left behind on death, (kahio = says/makes, bakhaan-i = statement) proclaims ninth Nanak. 41.

 

ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਦੇਹ ਕੋ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਛਿਨ ਮੈ ਮੀਤ ॥ ਜਿਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਹਿਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹਿ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥੪੨॥

Garab karaṯ hai ḏeh ko binsai cẖẖin mai mīṯ.   Jihi parānī har jas kahi▫o Nānak ṯihi jag jīṯ. ||42||

 

O mortal, you (karat = do) take pride in your (deyh) body – physical strength or beauty; but it can (binsai = perish) die (mai = in, chhin = moment) anytime, o friend.

One who is humble does not seek glory, remember: (Praani) the person (jih-i) who is humble and (kahio = says, jas-u = glory) praises and emulates virtues of (har-i) the Almighty, (tih-i) that person can conquer (jag-u) the world, i.e. everyone praises him/her which is real glory, says ninth Nanak. 42.

 

ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਸੋ ਨਰੁ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਜਾਨੁ ॥ ਤਿਹਿ ਨਰ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੪੩॥

Jih gẖat simran rām ko so nar mukṯā jān.   Ŧihi nar har anṯar nahī Nānak sācẖī mān. ||43||

 

One in (jih) whose (ghatt-i) mind (simran) remembrance/obedience (ko) of (raam) the Almighty is done, (jaan-u) know (so) that (nar-u) person as (mukta) emancipated, i.e. one who has God in mind commits no vices.

(Maan-u) believe in (saachi) the truth that there is no (antar-u) difference/distinction between (tih-i) that (nar) person and (har-i) God – because s/he emulates Divine virtues and obeys Divine commands to become like the Almighty, says ninth Nanak. 43.

 

ਏਕ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਮਨਿ ॥ ਜੈਸੇ ਸੂਕਰ ਸੁਆਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਨੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਤਨੁ ॥੪੪॥

Ėk bẖagaṯ bẖagvān jih parānī kai nāhi man.   Jaise sūkar su▫ān Nānak māno ṯāhi ṯan. ||44||

 

(Praani) the person in (jih kai) whose (man-i) mind there is no (bhagat-i) devotion/obedience of (eyk) the One (bhagvaan) Almighty; (maano) consider (taah-i = of that, tan-u = body) that person (jaisey) like a stray (sookar) pig or (suaan) dog, i.e. s/he does not obey God but worships many gods/goddesses, and follows many gurus, says ninth Nanak. 44.

 

ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੋ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਜਿਉ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਆਨ ਤਜਤ ਨਹੀ ਨਿਤ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਉ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਹੁਇ ਇਕ ਚਿਤਿ ॥੪੫॥

Su▫āmī ko garihu ji▫o saḏā su▫ān ṯajaṯ nahī niṯ.   Nānak ih biḏẖ har bẖaja▫o ik man hu▫e ik cẖiṯ. ||45||

 

(Jiau) like a pet (suaan) dog (nahi = not, nit = ever) never (tajat) leaves (grih-u) the house of (suaami) the master;

(Bhajau) invoke (har-i) the Almighty (ih) this (bidh-i) way (huey-i) being (ik = one, man-i = with mind) focused (chit-i = with mind, ik = one) single-mindedly, i.e. not looking elsewhere, says ninth Nanak. 45.

 

ਤੀਰਥ ਬਰਤ ਅਰੁ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਧਰੈ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਜਾਤ ਤਿਹ ਜਿਉ ਕੁੰਚਰ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥੪੬॥

Ŧirath baraṯ ar ḏān kar man mai ḏẖarai gumān.   Nānak nihfal jāṯ ṯih ji▫o kuncẖar isnān. ||46||

 

One who (kar-i) goes on (teerath) pilgrimages, observes (barat) fasts (ar-u) and gives in (daan) charity but (dharai) has (gumaan-u) pride for doing so.

(Tih) that (jaat) goes (nihphal = fruitless) in vain, (jiau) like (isnaan-u) bath of (kunchar) an elephant – as it throws dust on itself after the bath, says ninth Nanak. 46.

Message: Pride negates any good one has done.

 

ਸਿਰੁ ਕੰਪਿਓ ਪਗ ਡਗਮਗੇ ਨੈਨ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੇ ਹੀਨ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਈ ਤਊ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਲੀਨ ॥੪੭॥

Sir kampi▫o pag dagmage nain joṯ ṯe hīn.   Kaho Nānak ih biḏẖ bẖa▫ī ṯa▫ū na har ras līn. ||47||

 

(Sir-u) the head (kampio) shakes, (pag) feet/legs are (ddagmagey) are unsteady and (nain) eyes are (heen) bereft (tey) of (jot-i = light) sight, i.e. one has grown very old.

(Ih) this (bidh-i) state has been (bhaee = happened) reached but (taoo) even then one has not (leen = taken) enjoyed (ras-i) pleasure of experiencing presence of (har-i) the Almighty within, i.e. one should remember and obey the Almighty at all stages of life; one may not be able to do so in old age, says ninth Nanak. 47.

ਨਿਜ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਜਗਤੁ ਮੈ ਕੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਤਿਹ ਰਾਖੋ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੪੮॥

Nij kar ḏekẖi▫o jagaṯ mai ko kāhū ko nāhi.   Nānak thir har bẖagaṯ hai ṯih rākẖo man māhi. ||48||

 

We (deykhio) look at relations/belongings (mai) in the world (kar-i = make believe) as (nij) our own; but (ko naah-i) none is (ko) of (kaahoo) anyone permanently, i.e. all relationships end with death and none accompanies to help when consequences of deeds have to be faced.

(Bhagat-i) devotion/obedience to (har-i) the Almighty (thir-u = steady) permanently helps one here and in the hereafter; (raakho) keep (tih) that (maah-i) in (man) mind, and you will remain steadily absorbed in the Almighty , says Ninth Nanak. 48.

 

ਜਗ ਰਚਨਾ ਸਭ ਝੂਠ ਹੈ ਜਾਨਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਰੇ ਮੀਤ ॥ ਕਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾ ਰਹੈ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਕੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥੪੯॥
Jag racẖnā sabẖ jẖūṯẖ hai jān leho re mīṯ.   Kahi Nānak thir nā rahai ji▫o bālū kī bẖīṯ. ||49||

 

(Rey) o (meet) friends, (jaan leyh-u = know) be aware that (sabh) the whole (rachna) created (jag) world is (jhootth = false) impermanent/perishable.

It does not (rahai) remain (thir-u = stable) permanently, i.e. it has limited life, (jiau) like (bheet-i) a wall (ki = of) built with (baaloo) sand, says ninth Nanak. 49.

 

ਰਾਮੁ ਗਇਓ ਰਾਵਨੁ ਗਇਓ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਜਿਉ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੫੦॥
Rām ga▫i▫o rāvan ga▫i▫o jā ka▫o baho parvār.   Kaho Nānak thir kacẖẖ nahī supne ji▫o sansār. ||50||

 

(Raam-u) Rama and (raavan-u) Ravana of the Ramayana (ja) who (kau) had (bah-u) large (parvaar-u) family each (gaio = went) died, i.e. no one can save when death comes.

(Kachh-u nahi) nothing is (thir-u = stable) forever; (sansar-u = world) all relations/wealth are (jiau) like (supney) a dream, i.e. transitory, says ninth Nanak. 50.

 

ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਜੋ ਅਨਹੋਨੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਇਹੁ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੫੧॥

Cẖinṯā ṯā kī kījī▫ai jo anhonī ho▫e.   Ih mārag sansār ko Nānak thir nahī ko▫e. ||51||

 

We should (keejeeai = do, chinta = worry) think of means to prevent (jo) what (hoey) can be caused (anhoni) not to happen, i.e. can be prevented or undone.

There is (nahi koey = not any) none here (thir-u = stable) permanently; this is (maarag-u) the way (ko) of the world, i.e. everyone who is born dies, says ninth Nanak. 51.

 

ਜੋ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਸੋ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਹੈ ਪਰੋ ਆਜੁ ਕੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਲੇ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਗਲ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥੫੨॥

Jo upji▫o so binas hai paro āj kai kāl.   Nānak har gun gā▫e le cẖẖād sagal janjāl. ||52||

 

(Jo) whosoever (upjio) is born, (so) that (binas-i) perishes and (paro = is put) taken by death (aaj-u) to-day (k-i) or (kaal-i) tomorrow – sooner or later on completion of the allotted life span.

Therefore, (chhaadd-i) forsake (sagal) all (janjaal) entanglements and (gaaey ley = sing) praise (gun) virtues of and obey (har-i) the Almighty – so that you are not born again and again, says ninth Nanak. 52.

 

Note: The next two Sloks are a study in contrast. The first is about those who ignore living by Naam, commit vices and are apprehensive of retribution. The second is about those who comply with Naam/Divine commands and confidently face Divine justice; the latter attain union with the Almighty – the objective of human birth.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ ਬਲੁ ਛੁਟਕਿਓ ਬੰਧਨ ਪਰੇ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਤ ਉਪਾਇ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਬ ਓਟ ਹਰਿ ਗਜ ਜਿਉ ਹੋਹੁ ਸਹਾਇ ॥੫੩॥

Ḏohrā.   Bal cẖẖutki▫o banḏẖan pare kacẖẖū na hoṯ upā▫e.   Kaho Nānak ab ot har gaj ji▫o hohu sahā▫e. ||53||

 

(Dohra) pair of lines. All (bal-u) strength (chhuttkio) is lost on death, (bandhan) fetters (parey) are put by Divine justice for not obeying the Creator, but (kachhoo na = not any) no (upaaey) measure (hot) can be taken at that stage.

O (har-i) Almighty, I seek Your (ott) sanctuary, please (hoh-u = be, sahaaey = helpful) save me from Divine justice (jiau) the way you saved (gaj) the elephant from clutches of the panther when it sought Your protection – as the story goes, says ninth Nanak. 53.

 

ਬਲੁ ਹੋਆ ਬੰਧਨ ਛੁਟੇ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਤ ਉਪਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੁਮਰੈ ਹਾਥ ਮੈ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਹੋਤ ਸਹਾਇ ॥੫੪॥
Bal ho▫ā banḏẖan cẖẖute sabẖ kicẖẖ hoṯ upā▫e.   Nānak sabẖ kicẖẖ ṯumrai hāth mai ṯum hī hoṯ sahā▫e. ||54||

 

(Sabh-u kichh-u = everything) all (upaaey) measures are (hot) taken by one who obeys the Almighty; his/her (bandhan) fetters of Divine justice (chhuttey = released) are obviated.

O Almighty, (sabh-u kichh-u) everything is (mai) in (tumrai) Your (haath) hands; (tum hi) You alone (hot = are, sahaaey = helpful) can help – please enable me to live Your commands in life, supplicates ninth Nanak. 54.

 

ਸੰਗ ਸਖਾ ਸਭਿ ਤਜਿ ਗਏ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਨਿਬਹਿਓ ਸਾਥਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਮੈ ਟੇਕ ਏਕ ਰਘੁਨਾਥ ॥੫੫॥

Sang sakẖā sabẖ ṯaj ga▫e ko▫ū na nib▫hi▫o sāth.   Kaho Nānak ih bipaṯ mai tek ek ragẖunāth. ||55||

 

(Sabh-i) all (sang sakhaa = companions) relations and friends (taj-i gaey) forsake one on death; (ko-oo na) no one (nibahio = lasts) remains (saath-i) with one, i.e. none is available to help once death arrives.

(Mai) in (ih) this (bipat-i) tribulation, the only (tteyk) sanctuary available is of having obeyed (raghoonaath) the Almighty in life – please enable me to do that, supplicates ninth Nanak. 55.

 

ਨਾਮੁ ਰਹਿਓ ਸਾਧੂ ਰਹਿਓ ਰਹਿਓ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਕਿਨ ਜਪਿਓ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤੁ ॥੫੬॥

Nām rahi▫o sāḏẖū rahi▫o rahi▫o gur gobinḏ.   Kaho Nānak ih jagaṯ mai kin japi▫o gur manṯ. ||56||

 

Having practiced Naam/Divine virtues and commands (rahio) remains with the soul; also having obeyed (saadhoo) the guru (rahio) remains; and (gur-u) the great (gobind-u = Master of the world) Almighty (rahio) remains with one who has obeyed IT.

But (kin) some rare person (japio) remembers and complies with (mant-u/mantra) directions of (gur) the guru – to live in obedience to the Almighty, says ninth Nanak. 56.

 

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰ ਮੈ ਗਹਿਓ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਮ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਜਿਹ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸੰਕਟ ਮਿਟੈ ਦਰਸੁ ਤੁਹਾਰੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੫੭॥੧॥

Rām nām ur mai gahi▫o jā kai sam nahī ko▫e.   Jih simraṯ sankat mitai ḏaras ṯuhāro ho▫e. ||57||1||

 

O Almighty, please enable me to (gahio = hold) keep (mai) in (ur) mind Naam/Divine virtues and commands, (ja) which measure has (nahi koey = not any) no (sam) equal in overcoming temptations.

(Simrat) by remembrance/compliance with (jih) which (tuhaaro) Your (daras-u) company/union (hoey) is attained and (sankatt) the distress of being put in cycles of births (mittai = effaced) is obviated. 57. 1.
