Such a person (kamaavai) complies with (gur sabad-u = guru’s word) the guru’s teachings and (kabh-u na) never (aavah-i haar-i) face failure i.e. do not fail to attain union with the Creator; (jam-u) the messenger of Divine justice does not (aavai) come (neyrr-i) near him/her – cannot prevent their union with the Creator.

We should (seyv kareejai = serve) obey (ta = that) IT’s commands and (leejai = take) derive (laaha = profit) the benefit of (paaiai) obtaining (maan-u) honour (dargah) in Divine court i.e. being accepted for union with the Creator.

The Creator (jin-i) who (upaaia) created (jagat-u) the world and (laaia) put every one on their allotted (dhandhai = professions) roles; I (kurbaan-u = sacrifice, vittah-u = to) adore (tisai) that Master. 3.

(Ja) if it (bhaavai) pleases (tis-u = that) the Master, (keytey) any number of (jug) ages i.e. any length of time, (jaah-i = go) may pass but (tin) their (phal) reward never (tott-i aavai) runs out i.e. the Creator ever keeps giving.

Āsā mėhlā 1 cẖẖanṯ gẖar 3.

Composition of the first Guru in Raga Aasa, (chhant) song of love for the Almighty, (ghar-u 3) to be sung to the third beat.

Note: This Shabad uses examples from nature to highlight human attachment to transitory pleasures and resultant suffering.

Ŧūʼn suṇ harṇā kāliā kī vāṛīai rāṯā rām. Bikẖ fal mīṯẖā cẖār ḏin fir hovai ṯāṯā rām.

(Sun-i) listen, (too) you, o (kaalia harnaa = black deer) mindless person, (kiaa) why are you (raata = imbued) in love with (vaarreeai = garden) sensual pleasures?
This (phal-u = fruit) experience of (bikh/vishai) vices seems (meettha = sweet) pleasing but lasts (chaar-i din = four days) for a short while and (phir-i) then (hovai) becomes (taata = hot) the cause of suffering.

Fir hoe ṯāṯā kẖarā māṯā nām bin parṯāpe. Oh jev sāir ḏe-i lahrī bijul jivai cẖamkae.

Things by which you are (kharaa) greatly (maata = intoxicated) possessed by; all these, (bin-u) except living by (naam) Divine virtues and commands, (partaapaey = cause great heat) cause suffering.
(Oh-u) they are transitory (jeyv) like (saair) the sea (dey-i = gives) produces (lahri) waves or (jivai) like (bijul) the lightning (chamkaey) flashes – they occur for a while and then disappear.

Har bājẖ rākẖā koe nāhī soe ṯujẖėh bisārā. Sacẖ kahai Nānak cẖeṯ re man marėh harṇā kāliā. ||1||

There is (koey naahi) none (baajh-u) except (har-i) the Almighty who can (raakha = protector) protect you from the vices, but (tujhah-i) you have (bisaaria) forgotten (soey = that) the Master.
Guru Nanak (kahai = says) reminds you of (sach-u) the truth/reality: (Cheyt-i) remember the Almighty (rey) o (man) my mind (harnaa kaalia = black deer) possessed by vices, otherwise you will (marah-i = die) keep succumbing to vices. 1.

Bẖavrā fūl bẖavanṯiā ḏukẖ aṯ bẖārī rām. Mai gur pūcẖẖiā āpṇā sācẖā bīcẖārī rām.

O (bhavra) bumble bee (bhavantia) hovering (phool-i) over the flowers, you are in for (at-i) very (bhaari = heavy) terrible (dukh-u) distress ahead – you will be consumed when the flower closes.
Message: O my wavering mind, your being engrossed in transitory pleasures will be your undoing.
(Mai) I (poochhia) asked (aapna) my (sachaa) true guru who (beechaari) thinks (saachaa = true) rightly.

Bīcẖār saṯgur mujẖai pūcẖẖiā bẖavar belī rāṯao. Sūraj cẖaṛiā pind paṛiā ṯel ṯāvaṇṯāṯao.

(Mujhai) I (poochhia) asked (beechaar-i) thoughts (satigur-u) of the true guru, as to why (bhavar = bumble bee) the wavering mind (raatao = imbued) falls to temptations of (beyl = creepers/flowers) transitory pleasures – what will happen to it?
The guru replied: When (sooraj) the sun (charria) rises i.e. when the night – life span – is over, (pind-u) the body will (parria) fall and the soul will be put in (taatao) heated (teyl-u) oil (taavan-i = for heating) torture – as below.

Jam mag bāḏẖā kẖāhi cẖotā sabaḏ bin beṯāliā. Sacẖ kahai Nānak cẖeṯ re man marėh bẖavrā kāliā. ||2||

(Bin-u) without (sabad = word) the guru’s teachings one (beytaalia = out of step) wanders directionless, his/her soul is (baadha = bound) put (mag-i) on the path of, i.e. taken by (jam) the agent of Divine justice and (khaah-i chotta = receives hits) suffers – denied union with the Creator and put in cycles of births and deaths.
Guru Nanak (kahai) says this (sach-u) truth: (Rey) o (bhavra kaalia = black bumble bee) my vicious mind, (cheyt-i) remember the Almighty, otherwise you will (mareyh = die) keep falling prey to temptations/vices – and suffer. 2.

Mere jīaṛiā parḏesīā kiṯ pavėh janjāle rām. Sācẖā sāhib man vasai kī fāsėh jam jāle rām.

O (meyrey) my (jeearria) soul (pardeysia) alien/wandering outside, (kit-u) why are you (pavah-i = falling) getting caught in (janjaaley) entanglements of the world-play?
(Saacha) the Eternal (sahib-u) Master (vasai) dwells (man-i = in the mind) within, (ki) why you have forgotten IT and are (phaasah-i = trapped) caught in (jaaley = web) the trap of (jam) the agent of Divine justice, i.e. vices?

Macẖẖulī vicẖẖunnī naiṇ runnī jāl baḏẖik pāiā. Sansār māiā moh mīṯẖā anṯ bẖaram cẖukāiā.

When (badhik-i = hunter) the fisherman (paaia) spreads (jaal-u) the net and (machhuli) the fish gets caught in it, (vichhuni) it is separated from the water; it (nain runi = cries with tearful eyes) repents – for not having been careful.

The (bharam-u) delusion (chukaaia) ends when (ant-i) in the end, the soul realises that it is suffering because it found (moh-u) lure (sansaar-u maaia) of temptations (meettha = sweet) enjoyable.

Bẖagaṯ kar cẖiṯ lāe har sio cẖẖod manhu anḏesiā. Sacẖ kahai Nānak cẖeṯ re man jīaṛiā parḏesīā. ||3||

(Chit-u laaey = put the mind) remember and obey (har-i) the Almighty (bhagat-i kar-i) with devotion; this way you will (chhodd-i = leave) be freed of (andeysia) anxiety (manh-u) from the mind.
Guru Nanak (kahai) says this (sach-u) truth: (Cheyt-i) remember the Almighty (rey) o my (man) mind, the (jeearria) soul (pardesia = alien) wandering outside. 3.

Naḏīā vāh vicẖẖunniā melā sanjogī rām. Jug jug mīṯẖā vis bẖare ko jāṇai jogī rām.

The way (vaah) the water-flows which (vichhunia) separate from (nadiaa) the streams, their (meyla) meeting with the stream (sanjogi = by destiny) may or may not happen; similarly the creatures who are led astray from the path to the Almighty, and go their own way come back if so destined, based on their deeds.
(Vis-u = poison) the vices people consider (meettha = sweet) enjoyable, are (bharey = full) present (jug-u jug-u = in all ages) all the time and (ko) some rare (jogi) Yogi who (jaanai = knows) understands this, overcomes them.

Koī sahj jāṇai har pacẖẖāṇai saṯgurū jin cẖeṯiā. Bin nām har ke bẖaram bẖūle pacẖėh mugaḏẖ acẖeṯiā.

(Koee) some rare person (jin-i) who (cheytia) remembers teachings of (satguru) the true Guru (sahj-i) intuitively (jaanai) understands this – sheds vices – and (pachhaanai) recognises (har-i) the Almighty within.
Otherwise, (bin-u) without (naam) remembering the virtues and commands of the Almighty, (mugadh) foolish people (acheytia) oblivious of the Almighty (bhooley) are led astray (bharam-i) in delusion and (pachah-i = burn) face frustration – for being unable to find the Master.

Those who do not (radai = mind) remember (saacha) the Eternal Master and do not live (bhagat-i) with devotion/commitment to (har-i naam-u) commands of the Almighty, (sey) they (runia) cry out (dhaahi) wildly (ant-i) at the end of life – when they are confronted with their deeds and have to face the consequences.
Guru Nanak (kahai) states this (sach-u) truth: Those (vichhunia) separated from the Creator (chiri = for long) for numerous births can (meyl-i) be united with (saachai) the Eternal Master (sabad-i = by the word) by following the guru’s teachings. 4. 1. 5.
