SGGS pp 533-535, Devgandhaari M: 5, Shabads 24-33.

 

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.  Ḏevganḏẖārī mėhlā 5.

 

Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace. Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Devgandhaari.

 

ਅਪੁਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਬਿਨਉ ਕਹਿਆ ॥ ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਦਇਆਲ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਗਲ ਅੰਦੇਸਰਾ ਗਇਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Apune saṯgur pėh bin▫o kahi▫ā.  Bẖa▫e kirpāl ḏa▫i▫āl ḏukẖ bẖanjan merā sagal anḏesrā ga▫i▫ā. Rahā▫o.

 

Whenever I (kahiaa = say) make (binau) a request to the Almighty (satigur) True Guru,

(sagal) all my (andeysra) fears/worries (gaiaa) leave as the Master (bhaey) is (kripaal) merciful (daiaal) compassionate, and (bhanjan) destroyer of (dukh) distress. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਲੋਭੀ ਹਮਰਾ ਗੁਨੁ ਅਵਗੁਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਹਿਆ ॥ ਕਰੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਸਾਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਜੇ ਮੁਏ ਦੁਸਟ ਜੋ ਖਇਆ ॥੧॥

Ham pāpī pākẖandī lobẖī hamrā gun avgun sabẖ sahi▫ā.  Kar masṯak ḏẖār sāj nivāje mu▫e ḏusat jo kẖa▫i▫ā. ||1||

 

(Ham) I am (paapi) a wrongdoer, (lobhi) greedy and (paakhanddi) pretender; it is IT’s kindness to (sahiaa) put up with (sabh-u = every) whatever (gun-u) merit and (avgun-u) shortcoming I have.

(Dhaar-i) placing IT’s (kar-u) hand (mastak-i = forehead) on my head, i.e. bestowing grace, IT (saaj-i) transforms and (nivaajey) honours; (dustt = adversaries) the vices which try to (khaiaa) destroy virtues in the mind (muey = die) are banished. 1.

 

ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਸਰਬ ਸਧਾਰੀ ਸਫਲ ਦਰਸਨ ਸਹਜਇਆ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਦਾਤਾ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਉਰ ਧਰਿਆ ॥੨॥੨੪॥

Par▫upkārī sarab saḏẖārī safal ḏarsan sėhaj▫i▫ā.  Kaho Nānak nirguṇ ka▫o ḏāṯā cẖaraṇ kamal ur ḏẖari▫ā. ||2||24||

 

IT (parupkaari = does good to others) looks after and (sadhaari) supports (sarab) all, i.e. gives them capabilities; getting awareness of IT’s (darsan = vision) virtues makes life (saphal) successful – and bring (sahjaiaa) poise.

(Kah-u) says the fifth Nanak: IT is (daata) beneficent (kau) to (nirgun) the virtue-less; we should keep IT’s (charan kamal) lotus feet (urdhariaa) in mind, i.e. be obedient to Divine commands. 2. 24.

ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥ ਸਰਨਿ ਆਇਓ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ḏevganḏẖārī mėhlā 5.  Anāth nāth parabẖ hamāre.  Saran ā▫i▫o rākẖanhāre. Rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Devgandhaari. (Hamaarey) our (prabh) Almighty is (naath) the Master of, i.e. looks after, (anaath = orphan) the hapless.

IT is (raakhanhaarey) the protector; I (aaio = have come) have placed myself in IT’s (saran-i = sanctuary) care and obedience.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਸਰਬ ਪਾਖ ਰਾਖੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥ ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਅੰਤੀ ਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥

Sarab pākẖ rākẖ murāre.  Āgai pācẖẖai anṯī vāre. ||1||

 

O Almighty (muraarey = destroyer of the demon Mur) destroyer of evil, please (raakh-u) protect me (sarab) from all (paakh) sides,

(aagai) from front and (paachhai) behind, i.e. from all types of temptations in life, and from reincarnation (anti vaarey = at the end) at death from reincarnation. 1.

 

ਜਬ ਚਿਤਵਉ ਤਬ ਤੁਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਉਨ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਸਧਾਰੇ ॥੨॥

Jab cẖiṯva▫o ṯab ṯuhāre.  Un samĥār merā man saḏẖāre. ||2||

 

(Jab) whenever I think it is about (tuhaarey) Your virtues.

By (samhaar-i) remembering (un) them (meyra) my (man) mind (sadhaarey) finds support, i.e. they are my guide for life. 2.

 

ਸੁਨਿ ਗਾਵਉ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨਾਰੇ ॥ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ਸਾਧ ਦਰਸਾਰੇ ॥੩॥

Sun gāva▫o gur bacẖnāre.  Bal bal jā▫o sāḏẖ ḏarsāre. ||3||

 

I (sun-i) listen to and (gaavau = sing) praise the Almighty in the guru’s (bachnaarey) words.

I (bal-i bal-i jau = am sacrifice) adore (darsaarey) meeting (saadh) the guru – and following his teachings of remembering the Master. 3. 

 

ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖਉ ਏਕ ਅਸਾਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੨੫॥

Man mėh rākẖa▫o ek asāre.  Nānak parabẖ mere karnaihāre. ||4||25||

Within my mind I have the prop of the Lord alone.

 

I (raakhau) have only (eyk) one (asaarey) wish (mah-i) in my (man) mind; to find (prabh) the Almighty (karnaihaarey) Creator (meyrey = my) of all, says the fifth Nanak. 4. 25.

ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਇਹੈ ਮਨੋਰਥੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਮੋਹਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਤਨ ਕਾ ਚੇਰਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ḏevganḏẖārī mėhlā 5.  Parabẖ ihai manorath merā.  Kirpā niḏẖān ḏa▫i▫āl mohi ḏījai kar sanṯan kā cẖerā. Rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Devgandhaari. O (prabh) Almighty, (meyra) my (ihai = this) only (manorath) objective is that (kripa nidhaa = treasure of mercy) the merciful and (daiaal) compassionate Master (kar-i deejay) makes me (cheyra) a disciple of (santan = saints) the seekers, i.e. I wish to follow the example of the true seekers.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਪ੍ਰਾਤਹਕਾਲ ਲਾਗਉ ਜਨ ਚਰਨੀ ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਦਰਸੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਕਰਉ ਜਨ ਸੇਵਾ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਉ ॥੧॥

Parāṯėhkāl lāga▫o jan cẖarnī nis bāsur ḏaras pāva▫o.  Ŧan man arap kara▫o jan sevā rasnā har gun gāva▫o. ||1||

 

I wish I can (laagau charni = be at the feet) pay obeisance to (jan = servants) the seekers (praatahkaal) in the morning and (daras-u paavau = have sight) be in their company (nis) night and (baasur) day.

I wish (karau seyva = serve) to follow the seekers (arp-i = make offering) with (tan) body and (man) mind, i.e. in action and thought; and to (gaavau = sing) remember and praise (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty with (rasna) the tongue. 1.

 

ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਨਿਤ ਰਹੀਐ ॥ ਏਕੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਮੋਰਾ ਅਨਦੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥੨॥੨੬॥

Sās sās simra▫o parabẖ apunā saṯsang niṯ rahī▫ai.  Ėk aḏẖār nām ḏẖan morā anaḏ Nānak ih lahī▫ai. ||2||26||

 

(Nit) ever (raheeai) remaining (sant sang-i) in the company of the seekers, I wish to (simrau) remember (prabh-u) the Master (apuna = own) of all.

That (dhan-u) the wealth of (naam-u) Divine virtues be (mora) my (adhaa-u = support) guide for life; this is (anad-u/anand) the bliss I wish (laheeai) to have. 2. 26.

Note: There is no solace that can equal peace experienced when other ideas are dispelled from the mind and presence of the Almighty is experienced. This comes with praising and emulating Divine virtues, and obeying Divine commands, with the guru’s guidance. The Master is then not forgotten, says the fifth Guru in this Shabad.

 

ਰਾਗੁ ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਘਰੁ ੩  ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Rāg ḏevganḏẖārī mėhlā 5 gẖar 3   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Devgandhaari, (ghar-u 3) to be sung to the third beat: Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance:

 

ਮੀਤਾ ਐਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸੰਗੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Mīṯā aise har jī▫o pā▫e.  Cẖẖod na jā▫ī saḏ hī sange an▫ḏin gur mil gā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

I have (paaey) found (aisa) such (meeta) a friend in (jeeau) the revered (har-i) Almighty who – unlike other friends – is (sad hi) for ever (sangey) with us and does not (chhodd-i jaaee) leave the mind; we should (gaaey = sing) praise and emulate IT’s virtues (mil-i) with company/guidance of the guru – in holy congregation. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਮਿਲਿਓ ਮਨੋਹਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖੈਨਾ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਨ ਕਤਹੂ ਜਾਏ ॥ ਅਨਿਕ ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਪੇਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਰੋਮ ਨ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਲਾਏ ॥੧॥

Mili▫o manohar sarab sukẖainā ṯi▫āg na kaṯhū jā▫e.  Anik anik bẖāṯ baho pekẖe pari▫a rom na samsar lā▫e. ||1||

 

Once (milio) found, (manohar) the fascinating Master, the source of (sarab) all (sukhaina) comforts, does not (tiaag-i) forsake to (jaaey) go (kat-hoo) anywhere, i.e. is always present with one who remembers IT.

I have (peykhey) seen (bahu) numerous – gods/goddesses and – people of (anik anik = numerous) different types but none (samsar laaey) equals even (rom) a hair, i.e. does not have a bit of virtues compared to, (pria) the Beloved Master. 1.

 

ਮੰਦਰਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਸੋਭ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਅਨਹਤ ਰੁਣੁ ਝੁਣੁ ਲਾਏ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਥੀਤੇ ਸਦ ਥਾਏ ॥੨॥੧॥੨੭॥

Manḏar bẖāg sobẖ ḏu▫ārai anhaṯ ruṇ jẖuṇ lā▫e.  Kaho Nānak saḏā rang māṇe garih pari▫a thīṯe saḏ thā▫e. ||2||1||27||

 

(Mandar-i = in house) in the mind that finds IT, (anhat) unstruck celestial music (laaey) plays in (run-u jhun-u) a soft tone, i.e. the mind remains naturally connected with the Master; such a soul is (bhaag-u = good fortune) blessed and receives (sobh) glory (duaarai = at the gate) from the Almighty – is honourably accepted for union with the Creator.

Like a wife whose (pria) beloved husband is (grih = home) with her, such a soul (sadaa) ever (rang maaney) enjoys the pleasure of the Master’s presence as IT (theetey) stays (sad) ever (thaaey = in place) within. 2. 1. 27.

ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ ੫ ॥ ਦਰਸਨ ਨਾਮ ਕਉ ਮਨੁ ਆਛੈ ॥ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਇਓ ਹੈ ਸਗਲ ਥਾਨ ਰੇ ਆਹਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਸੰਤ ਪਾਛੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ḏevganḏẖārī 5.  Ḏarsan nām ka▫o man ācẖẖai.  Bẖaram ā▫i▫o hai sagal thān re āhi pari▫o sanṯ pācẖẖai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Devgandhaari. My (man= mind) soul (aachhai) yearns for (darsan) vision of (naam) virtues of the Almighty within.

The soul has (aaio) come after (bhram-i) wandering at (sarab) all (thaan) places, i.e. has been through numerous life forms and in this human birth – (aah-i) has come and (pario) placed itself (paachhai) behind (sant) the guru – to seek and follow his guidance. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.  

 

ਕਿਸੁ ਹਉ ਸੇਵੀ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਰਾਧੀ ਜੋ ਦਿਸਟੈ ਸੋ ਗਾਛੈ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰੀਐ ਚਰਣ ਰੇਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਬਾਛੈ ॥੧॥

Kis ha▫o sevī kis ārāḏẖī jo ḏistai so gācẖẖai.  Sāḏẖsangaṯ kī sarnī parī▫ai cẖaraṇ ren man bācẖẖai. ||1||

 

(Kis-u) whom can (hau) I (seyvi = serve) follow or (aaraadhi) invoke? (Jo) whosever (disttai = is seen) I see (so) that (gaachhai = goes) is perishable.

We should (sarni-pareeai) seek sanctuary (saadhsangat-i) in congregation of the guru; my (man-u) mind (baachhai) longs for (reyn-u) the dust (charan) of the feet of the guru.

ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਗੁਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਮਾਇ ਆਛੈ ॥ ਆਇ ਪਇਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਤਉ ਉਤਰੀ ਸਗਲ ਦੁਰਾਛੈ॥੨॥੨॥੨੮॥

Jugaṯ na jānā gun nahī ko▫ī mahā ḏuṯar mā▫e ācẖẖai.  Ā▫e pa▫i▫o Nānak gur cẖarnī ṯa▫o uṯrī sagal ḏurācẖẖai. ||2||2||28||

 

I cannot find the Master on my own for; I do not (jaana) know (jugat-i) the method, I have no (gun-u) virtues and (maaey/maaia) temptations in the world-play are (dutar-u = hard to swim across) hard to overcome.

When I (aaey) came and (pario) placed myself (charni) at the feet of the guru, (tau) then (sagal) all (dur-aachhai) evil desires (utri = removed) were driven out facilitating finding the Master within. 2. 2. 28.

ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ ੫ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਬਚਨ ਤੁਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਮਨਮੋਹਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਭਹੂ ਮਧਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ḏevganḏẖārī 5.  Amriṯā pari▫a bacẖan ṯuhāre.  Aṯ sunḏar manmohan pi▫āre sabẖhū maḏẖ nirāre. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Devgandhaari. O (pria) Beloved, (tuhaarey) Your (bachan = words) commands are (amrita) life–giving – my guide for life.

You are (ati) the most (sundar) handsome (manmohan) fascinating (piaarey) Beloved Master who even when being (madh-i) amongst (sabh-hoo) all are (niraraaey = different) detached from all, i.e. ever pristine. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਰਾਜੁ ਨ ਚਾਹਉ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਚਾਹਉ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲਾਰੇ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਹੇਸ ਸਿਧ ਮੁਨਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹੀ ਦਰਸਾਰੇ ॥੧॥

Rāj na cẖāha▫o mukaṯ na cẖāha▫o man parīṯ cẖaran kamlāre.  Barahm mahes siḏẖ mun inḏrā mohi ṯẖākur hī ḏarsāre. ||1||

 

I (chaahau) wish for neither (raaj-u = kingdom) status/authority or (mukat-i) salvation; my (man-i) mind longs for (preet-i) the love of Your (charan kamlaarey) lotus feet, i.e. wishes to live by Divine virtues and commands.

People look to Brahma, Mahesh, (sidh-u) those who show miracles, (mun-i) sages and Indra the king of gods, but (moh-i) I only wish for Your (tthaakur) the Master’s (darsaarey) vision (hi) alone, i.e. wish for awareness of Divine virtues and commands. 1.

 

ਦੀਨੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਆਇਓ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਸੰਤ ਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਿਲੇ ਮਨੋਹਰ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲ ਬਿਗਸਾਰੇ ॥੨॥੩॥੨੯॥

Ḏīn ḏu▫ārai ā▫i▫o ṯẖākur saran pari▫o sanṯ hāre.  Kaho Nānak parabẖ mile manohar man sīṯal bigsāre. ||2||3||29||

 

I (aaio) have come (duaarai) to Your door as (deen-u) a poor person, (haarey = lost) having been frustrated elsewhere, and (pario) placed myself (saran-i) in the care of (sant = saint) the seekers to follow their example.

This is how (manohar) the fascinating (miley) is found within, and (man-u) the mind feels (seetal = cool) at peace and (bigsaarey) happy, says Nanak the fifth. 2. 3. 29.

ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਿਓ ॥ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪਨੇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਰਿਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ḏevganḏẖārī mėhlā 5.  Har jap sevak pār uṯāri▫o.  Ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl bẖa▫e parabẖ apne bahuṛ janam nahī māri▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Devgandhaari. (Jap-i) by keeping in mind – virtues and commands of – (har-i) the Almighty, (seyvak- u = servant) the seeker (utaario) lands (paar-i) on the far bank, i.e. overcomes temptations in life.

When (apney = own) our (prabh-u) Master (bhaey) is (daiaal = compassionate) kind to the seeker, s/he is not (janam) born (bahurr-i) again to (maario) die. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਮਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਰਿਓ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਨੁ ਤਰਿਆ ਕੁਲਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਉਧਾਰਿਓ ॥੧॥

Sāḏẖsangam guṇ gāvah har ke raṯan janam nahī hāri▫o.  Parabẖ gun gā▫e bikẖai ban ṯari▫ā kulah samūh uḏẖāri▫o. ||1||

 

One who (gaavah = sings) recounts and lives by (gun) virtues of the Almighty (saadh-sangam-i = convergence of saints) with the guru’s company/guidance, s/he does not (haario = lose) waste the opportunity offered by (ratan = jewel) the valuable (janam-u) human birth.

S/he (tariaa) swims across (ban-u = water) the world-ocean of, i.e. overcomes, (bikhai) vices and (udhaario) emancipates, i.e. brings good name to his/her (samooh) entire (kulh) lineage.

 

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਬਸਿਆ ਰਿਦ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਉਚਾਰਿਓ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਜਗਦੀਸੁਰ ਪੁਨਹ ਪੁਨਹ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਿਓ ॥੨॥੪॥੩੦॥

Cẖaran kamal basi▫ā riḏ bẖīṯar sās girās ucẖāri▫o.  Nānak ot gahī jagḏīsur punah punah balihāri▫o. ||2||4||30||

 

(Kamal) the lotus (Charan) feet of the Master (basiaa) dwell (bheetar-i) in his/her (rid) mind i.e. s/he lives by Divine virtues and commands, (uchaario = utters) remembering them with very (saas-i) breath and (giraas-i) morsel of food, i.e. all the time.

Nanak the fifth (gahi = holds) seeks (ott) protection of (jagdeesur) the Master of the universe and (paunah punah = again and again) ever (balhiaario = is sacrifice) adores IT. 2. 4. 30.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Devgandhaari, (ghar-u 4) to be sung to the fourth beat.  Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace.

 

ਕਰਤ ਫਿਰੇ ਬਨ ਭੇਖ ਮੋਹਨ ਰਹਤ ਨਿਰਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Karaṯ fire ban bẖekẖ mohan rahaṯ nirār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Some people (karat bheykh) adopt the garb, – of  renouncers – and (phirey) wander in (ban) jungles – in search of the Almighty, but (mohan) the fascinating Master (rahat) remains (niraar) separate from them. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਕਥਨ ਸੁਨਾਵਨ ਗੀਤ ਨੀਕੇ ਗਾਵਨ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਧਰਤੇ ਗਾਰ ॥੧॥

Kathan sunāvan gīṯ nīke gāvan man mėh ḏẖarṯe gār. ||1||

 

The way to find the Almighty is to (kathan = say) recount, (sunaavan = cause to hear) proclaim and (gaavan = sing) praise (neekey geet = good songs) virtues of the Almighty and (dhartey) keep them (gaar) implanted (mah-i) in the mind. 1.

 

ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਹੁ ਚਤੁਰ ਸਿਆਨੇ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਰਸਨਾ ਚਾਰ ॥੨॥

Aṯ sunḏar baho cẖaṯur si▫āne biḏi▫ā rasnā cẖār. ||2||

 

Those who do that are (at-i) most (sundar = beautiful) desirable, (bah-u) very (chatur) clever and (siaaney) wise (bidiaa = education) knowledgeable; their (rasna) tongues speak (chaar) beautiful words. 2.

 

ਮਾਨ ਮੋਹ ਮੇਰ ਤੇਰ ਬਿਬਰਜਿਤ ਏਹੁ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ॥੩॥

Mān moh mer ṯer bibarjiṯ ehu mārag kẖande ḏẖār. ||3||

 

(Bibarjit) giving up (maan) pride, (moh) attachment to the world-play, distinction of (meyr) mine and (teyr) thine, i.e. conflicts; this is (maarag-u) a path (khanddedhaar) like the edge of a dagger – it is hard, but they follow it. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੀਅਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਤ ਸੰਗਾਰ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥

Kaho Nānak ṯin bẖavjal ṯarī▫ale parabẖ kirpā sanṯ sangār. ||4||1||31||

 

Says the fifth Nanak: In (sangaar) the company of (sant) the seekers they receive (kirpa) grace of (prabh) the Master; (tin-i) they (tareealey) get across (bhavjal-u) the world-ocean, i.e. to unite with the Almighty and not reborn. 4. 1. 31.

ਮੈ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਰੀ ਊਚਾ ਮੋਹਨੁ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥ ਆਨ ਨ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਕੋਊ ਲਾਗੈ, ਢੂਢਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਮ ਮੂਚਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Mai pekẖi▫o rī ūcẖā mohan sabẖ ṯe ūcẖā.  Ān na samsar ko▫ū lāgai dẖūdẖ rahe ham mūcẖā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

The soul-bride says to fellow souls: (Ri) o my friends, I have (peykhio) seen the One (mohan = fascinating) Beloved Master who is (oocha = high) great, (oocha) the greater (tey) than (sabh) all.

 (Ham) I (ddhooddh-i rahey) have searched (moocha = big) extensively; (ko-oo na) none (aan) else (laagai) seems (samsara-i) equal to IT. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਬਹੁ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਅਤਿ ਬਡੋ ਗਾਹਰੋ ਥਾਹ ਨਹੀ ਅਗਹੂਚਾ ॥ ਤੋਲਿ ਨ ਤੁਲੀਐ ਮੋਲਿ ਨ ਮੁਲੀਐ ਕਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨ ਰੂਚਾ ॥੧॥

Baho be▫anṯ aṯ bado gāhro thāh nahī aghūcẖā.  Ŧol na ṯulī▫ai mol na mulī▫ai kaṯ pā▫ī▫ai man rūcẖā. ||1||

 

IT is (bah-u) exceedingly (beyant = without limits) infinite, (at-i baddo) the greatest,  (gaahro = deep) profound, (thaah nahi = without bottom) unfathomable and (agahoocha = cannot be held) beyond physical reach.

IT cannot (tuleeai) be weighed (tol-i) on a weighing scale, cannot be (muleeai) appraised in terms of (mol-i = price) material worth, i.e. the Master is beyond all measures; (kat) where can we (paaeeai) find such a (man roocha) fascinating Master? 1.

 

ਖੋਜ ਅਸੰਖਾ ਅਨਿਕ ਤਪੰਥਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਨਹੀ ਪਹੂਚਾ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਰਸ ਭੂੰਚਾ ॥੨॥੧॥੩੨॥

Kẖoj asankẖā anik ṯapanthā bin gur nahī pahūcẖā.  Kaho Nānak kirpā karī ṯẖākur mil sāḏẖū ras bẖūncẖā. ||2||1||32||

 

(Asankha) countless people (khoj) search IT by practicing (anik) numerous (tapantha) austerities, i.e. becoming ascetics – but no one (pahoocha = reached) finds IT (bin-u) without (gur) the guru’s guidance.

Says fifth Nanak: When (tthaakur) the Master (kirpa kari) bestows grace, one (mil-i) finds (saadhoo) the guru and (bhooncha) drinks (ras) the elixir, i.e. becomes aware of and lives by Divine virtues and commands. 2. 1. 32.

ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਮੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਰੀ ਕੋਊ ॥ ਖੰਡ ਦੀਪ ਸਭ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਸਭ ਲੋਊ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ḏevganḏẖārī mėhlā 5.  Mai baho biḏẖ pekẖi▫o ḏūjā nāhī rī ko▫ū.  Kẖand ḏīp sabẖ bẖīṯar ravi▫ā pūr rahi▫o sabẖ lo▫ū. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

I have (peykhio = seen) surveyed in (bah-u) numerous (bidh-i = methods) ways and found that there is (naahi ko-oo) none (dooja = second) other like the Master.

IT (raviaa) pervades (bheetar-i) in (sabh) all (khandd) parts of the universe including (deep) islands; IT (poor-i rahio) is present in all (lo-oo/lok) planets. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੰਮਾ ਕਵਨ ਮਹਿੰਮਾ ਮਨੁ ਜੀਵੈ ਸੁਨਿ ਸੋਊ ॥ ਚਾਰਿ ਆਸਰਮ ਚਾਰਿ ਬਰੰਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਏ ਸੇਵਤੋਊ ॥੧॥

Agam agammā kavan mahimmā man jīvai sun so▫ū.  Cẖār āsram cẖār barannā mukaṯ bẖa▫e sevṯo▫ū. ||1||

 

IT is even (agam) beyond (agamma) those unreachable; so (kavan = who) how can we (mahimma = praise) compare with any one, i.e. cannot; my (man-u) mind (jeevai = enlivened) blossoms (sun-i) listening to IT’s (so-oo) glory.

A person (chaar-i aasram = four stages of life based on age) of any age and belonging to any (chaar-i baranna = four castes) status based on so called castes (mukat-i bhaey) is emancipated (sevto-oo = serving) by living by Divine virtues and commands. 1.

 

ਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ, ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ, ਦੁਤੀਅ ਗਏ ਸੁਖ ਹੋਊ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ਸਹਜੋਊ ॥੨॥੨॥੩੩॥

Gur sabaḏ driṛ▫ā▫i▫ā param paḏ pā▫i▫ā ḏuṯī▫a ga▫e sukẖ ho▫ū.  Kaho Nānak bẖav sāgar ṯari▫ā har niḏẖ pā▫ī sahjo▫ū. ||2||2||33||

 

When (gur-i) of the guru (drirraaia) creates firm commitment to (sabd-u = word) the teachings, s/he (paaiaa) obtains (param) the supreme (pad-u) status, i.e. mind clear of other ideas; his/her (duteeaa = duality) thoughts of others (gaey) leave and s/he (ho-oo = has) experiences (sukh) peace of mind

Says fifth Nanak: S/he (tariaa = swims) gets across the world-ocean – gives up attachments to the world-play – and (paa-i) finds (nidh-i) the treasure of presence of (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. unites with  IT,  (sahajo-oo) naturally. 2. 2. 33.
