SGGS pp 807-809, Bilaaval M: 5, Shabads 25-34.

 

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਿੰਚਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਮ ॥੧॥

Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Man mėh sincẖahu har har nām.  An▫ḏin kīrṯan har guṇ gām. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: o Human being, (sinchah-u = irrigate) put (mah-i) in your (man) mind, i.e. remember, (har-i = keeps away vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam) virtues and commands  – which were made known to the soul – so that it does not wither, i.e. does not fall prey to temptations in the world-play.

And the way to do this is to (andin = everyday) ever (gaam/gaau) sing (keertan) praises of (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty – and emulate them. 1.

 

ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਨੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Aisī parīṯ karahu man mere.  Āṯẖ pahar parabẖ jānhu nere. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Meyrey) my (man) mind, (karahu) have (aisi) such (preet-i = affection) devotion to the Master

that you (janahu = consider) find (prabh) the Almighty (neyrey = near) with you (aatth = eight x pahar = three hour periods) round the clock, i.e. you should be conscious of Divine protection as well as watch on your deeds. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਭਾਗ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨੀ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗ ॥੨॥੭॥੨੫॥

Kaho Nānak jā ke nirmal bẖāg.  Har cẖarnī ṯā kā man lāg. ||2||7||25||

 

Says fifth Nanak: One (ja key) whose (bhaag) fortune is (nirmal = clean) good; (ta ka) his/her (maan-u) mind (laag = attaches) pays attention to (har-i) the Almighty’s (charni = feet) commands – and lives by them. 2. 7. 25.

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ ਨੀਦ ਪਈ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਘਰੁ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Rog ga▫i▫ā parabẖ āp gavā▫i▫ā.  Nīḏ pa▫ī sukẖ sahj gẖar ā▫i▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: (Rog-u) the affliction – of ego – (gaiaa) leaves when (prabh-i) the Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (gavaaiaa = lost) dispels, i.e. ego can be dispelled only by Divine grace.

Then (sukh) comfort and (sahj) poise (aaiaa) come to (ghar-u = house) the mind and it (need paee = gets sleep) attains peace. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਰਜਿ ਰਜਿ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਵਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਹਿ ਧਿਆਈ ॥੧॥

Raj raj bẖojan kāvahu mere bẖā▫ī.  Amriṯ nām riḏ māhi ḏẖi▫ā▫ī. ||1||

 

Naam is food – sustenance for the soul; (khaavhu) eat that (bhojan) food (raj-i raj-i) to the fill (meyrey) my (bhaaee) brethren – as it gives peace and poise, and that is by

(dhiaaee) paying attention to (amrit) life-giving Naam (maah-i) in (man) the mind – it is the mainstay for life. 1.

 

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਰਨਾਈ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਅਪਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਾਈ ॥੨॥੮॥੨੬॥

Nānak gur pūre sarnā▫ī.  Jin apne nām kī paij rakẖā▫ī. ||2||8||26||

 

Says fifth Nanak: Place yourself in (sarnaaee = sanctuary) care of, i.e. live by virtues and commands of, (gur) the great (poorey) all-pervasive Almighty, (jin-i) who (rakhaaee) preserves (paij) the honor (ki) of (apnai = own) IT’s Naam, i.e. unites with IT-self, one who lives by Naam. 2. 8. 26.

Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Saṯgur kar ḏīne asthir gẖar bār. Rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: By imparting awareness of Naam, (satigur) the true guru (kar-i deeno) makes (ghar baar = house) the mind (asthir) steady.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦ ਕਰੈ ਇਨ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਨ ਕੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਹੀ ਮਾਰੈ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੧॥

Jo jo ninḏ karai in garihan kī ṯis āgai hī mārai karṯār. ||1||

 

(Jo jo) anyone who (karai = does, nind = slander) wishes ill for (in) these (grahn = houses) people who live by Naam, (kartaar) the Creator (maarai) kills (tis-u) that person (aagai hi) even before – s/he can cause harm. 1.

 

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾਈ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਖੰਡ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੨॥੯॥੨੭॥

Nānak ḏās ṯā kī sarnā▫ī jā ko sabaḏ akẖand apār. ||2||9||27||

 

(Daas = servant) humble fifth Nanak has placed himself (sarnaai = sanctuary) in care (ki) of (ta) that Master (ja ko) whose (sabad-u = Word/commands) writ is (akhandd = unbreakable) inviolable, and domain (apaar) infinite, i.e. the Supreme Master. 2. 9. 27.

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਤਾਪ ਸੰਤਾਪ ਸਗਲੇ ਗਏ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਤੇ ਰੋਗ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਤੂ ਬਖਸਿਆ ਸੰਤਨ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Ŧāp sanṯāp sagle ga▫e binse ṯe rog.  Pārbarahm ṯū bakẖsi▫ā sanṯan ras bẖog. Rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: (Sagley) all (taap = ailments) afflictions and resultant (santaap) sufferings (gaey) leave once (tey) those (rog = maladies) vices which caused them (bonsey = destroyed) are given up.

(Paarbrahm-i) the Supreme Being (bakhsiaa) bestows grace to (too) you when you (bhog = consume) drink (ras) elixir of (santan) the saints, i.e. remember and emulate Divine virtues.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੰਡਲੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਆਰੋਗ ॥ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਰਾਮ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਅਵਖਦ ਜੋਗ ॥੧॥

Sarab sukẖā ṯerī mandlī ṯerā man ṯan ārog.  Gun gāvhu niṯ rām ke ih avkẖaḏ jog. ||1||

 

(Sarab) all (sukhaa) comforts will be (teyri) your (manddli = group) companions when (teyrey) your (man = mind) thoughts and (tan = body) actions are (aarog = healthy) free of vices.

(Nit) ever (gaavhu = sing) praise and emulate virtues of (raam the Almighty; (ih) this is (jog = capable) the effective (avkhad = medicine) cure for vices. 1.

 

ਆਇ ਬਸਹੁ ਘਰ ਦੇਸ ਮਹਿ ਇਹ ਭਲੇ ਸੰਜੋਗ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਭਏ ਲਹਿ ਗਏ ਬਿਓਗ ॥੨॥੧੦॥੨੮॥

Ā▫e bashu gẖar ḏes mėh ih bẖale sanjog. Nānak parabẖ suparsan bẖa▫e lėh ga▫e bi▫og. ||2||10||28||

                                                                      

(Aaey) come and (basahu) live in your (ghar) home (mah-i) in your (deys) country, i.e. you can attain union with the Almighty – your own home where you came from; (ih) this is (bhaley) the right and (sanjog) suitable time, i.e. human birth is the opportunity for this – make use of it.

(Prabh) the Almighty will then (bhaey) be (suprasann) highly pleased to unite you with IT-self, and your (biog = separation) pangs of separation (lah gaey = removed) shall end. 2. 10 28.

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਕਾਹੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥ ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ਛਤ੍ਰਪਤਿ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੈ ਖਿਆਲ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Kāhū sang na cẖālhī mā▫i▫ā janjāl.  Ūṯẖ siḏẖāre cẖẖaṯarpaṯ sanṯan kai kẖi▫āl. Rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: The human being gets entangled with affairs of the family, wealth creation and the like, but; (kaahoo na) none of the objects of (janjaal) entanglements in (maaiaa) the world-play (chaalhi) goes with the soul – all are left behind for others.                                                          

(Chhatarpat-i= master with canopy overhead) kings (ootth-i = get up) have to (sidhaar-e) go when the call comes; these are (khiaal = thoughts) views of (santan) the saints, i.e. the saints therefore do not get attached to these things.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਕਉ ਬਿਨਸਨਾ ਇਹ ਧੁਰ ਕੀ ਢਾਲ ॥ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥੧॥

Ahaʼn▫buḏẖ ka▫o binsanā ih ḏẖur kī dẖāl.  Baho jonī janmėh marėh bikẖi▫ā bikrāl. ||1||

 

One with (ahangbudh-i) arrogance (kau binsana = is destroyed) has to fall; awareness of (ih) this is (ddhaal) the principle (dhur-i) from the source – the Almighty.

Those who remain caught (bikraal = dreadful) the terrible (bikhiaa) vices, are (janmah-i) born in (bahu) numerous (joni) life forms, and (marah-i) die – again and again. 1.

 

ਸਤਿ ਬਚਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਕਹਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਜਪਹਿ ਗੁਪਾਲ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਰੰਗ ਲਾਲ ॥੨॥੧੧॥੨੯॥

Saṯ bacẖan sāḏẖū kahėh niṯ jāpėh gupāl.  Simar simar Nānak ṯare har ke rang lāl. ||2||11||29||

 

(Sadhoo) the saints (nit) ever (japah-i) remember – virtues and commands of (gupaal = sustainer) the Almighty and (kahah-i) say (sat-i) true (bachan) words, i.e. live truthfully.

They are (laal) red in (rang) colour, i.e. are imbued with love, of (har-i) the Almighty; they (simar-i simar-i) ever keep in mind – and emulate Naam or Divine virtues and commands and thus – (tarey = swim) get across the world-ocean, says fifth Nanak. 2. 11. 29.

Note: The Shabad below talks of Sahj Samaadh-i. Samadhi is a posture adopted by the yogis in which they steadfastly concentrate on what they call Dasam Duaar and claim to connect with the Divine. Gurmat advocates being absorbed in the Almighty instinctively; this is Sahj Samaadh-i. We focus on the Shabad and hope to get to Sahj Samaadh-i with Divine grace. It is a state not of just sitting down but also being in that state all the time. It is comforting and brings glory.

 

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਸਹਜ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਅਨੰਦ ਸੂਖ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਨ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਸਹਾਈ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਗੁਣ ਚੀਨ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bilāval mėhlā 5.   Sahj samāḏẖ anand sūkẖ pūre gur ḏīn.  Saḏā sahā▫ī sang parabẖ amriṯ guṇ cẖīn. Rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval:  The state of (sahj = natural, samaddh-i = focus) being focused on the Almighty intuitively brings (anand) bliss and (sookh) peace; it is (deen = imparted) facilitated by (poorey) the perfect guru.

In this, one (cheen) understands (amrit) the life-giving (gun) virtues of (prabh) the Almighty and experiences IT within; IT (sadaa) ever (sahaaee) comes to the aid of the seeker.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰੁ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਚਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਜੀਆ ॥ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਭਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਛੁ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਥੀਆ ॥੧॥

Jai jai kār jagṯar mėh locẖėh sabẖ jī▫ā.  Suparsan bẖa▫e saṯgur parabẖū kacẖẖ bigẖan na thī▫ā. ||1||

 

(Sabh-i) all (jeeaa) creatures (mah-i) in (jagatr) the world (lochah-i) yearn for (jai jaikaar) glorification.

When (prabhoo) the Almighty (satigur) true guru (bhaey) is (suprasann) well pleased to bestow grace, then (kachh-u na = not any) no (bighan-u) impediment comes in the way to obtaining glory – here and in the hereafter. 1.

 

ਜਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਗੁ ਦਇਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਦਾਸ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥੧੨॥੩੦॥

Jā kā ang ḏa▫i▫āl parabẖ ṯā ke sabẖ ḏās.  Saḏā saḏā vaḏi▫ā▫ī▫ā Nānak gur pās. ||2||12||30||

 

One (ja ka) whose (ang = side) support is, i.e. who has grace of, (daiaal) the compassionate (prabh) Master – to live by Naam; that person is sublime; (sabh) all become (ta key) his/her (daas) servants, i.e. everyone shows respect to one who keeps the Master in mind.

(Vaddiaaeeaa) glories are (sadaa sadaa) forever (paas-i = with) in the hand of (gur) the guru, i.e. one who follows the true guru is ever glorified, says fifth Nanak. 2. 12. 30.

Rāg bilāval mėhlā 5 gẖar 5 cẖa▫upḏe    Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval, (chaupad-e) with four stanzas, (ghar-u 5) to be sung to the fifth beat:  Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

ਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਮੰਡਲ ਜਗੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ॥ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਲਾਗਈ ਜਿਉ ਕਾਗਦ ਬੂੰਦਾਰ ॥੧॥
Mriṯ mandal jag sāji▫ā ji▫o bālū gẖar bār.  Binsaṯ bār na lāg▫ī ji▫o kāgaḏ būʼnḏār. ||1||

 

(Jag-u) the world (saajiaa) has been created as (manddal = group) a realm (mrit = death) subject to destruction, like (ghar baar) a building made of (baaloo) sand.

It (lagaee) takes no (baar) time for the creatures to (binsat) be destroyed, like (kaagad/kaagaj) paper is destroyed by (boond = drops) water. 1.

 

ਸੁਨਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਤਿ ਦੇਖੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਜਿ ਗਏ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sun merī mansā manai māhi saṯ ḏekẖ bīcẖār.  Siḏẖ sāḏẖik girhī jogī ṯaj ga▫e gẖar bār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Sun-i) listen (meyri) my (mansa) desire (maah-i) in (manai) the mind, i.e. o my carving mind, (deykh-u) see this (sat-i) truth and (beechaar-i) reflect.

(Sidh) accomplished saints, (girahi) householders, (jogi) Yogis – all – (gaey = go) die (taj-i) leaving (ghar baar) everything behind. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਜੈਸਾ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਰੈਨਿ ਕਾ ਤੈਸਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿਮਾਨ ਸਭੁ ਬਿਨਸੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਲਗਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੨॥
Jaisā supnā rain kā ṯaisā sansār.  Ḏaristimān sabẖ binsī▫ai ki▫ā lagėh gavār. ||2||

 

(Jaisa) as is (supna) the dream (ka = of) at (rain-i) night/in sleep – unreal, (taisa) so is everything in (sansaar) the world, transitory.

(Sabh-u) everything (dristtmaan) visible shall (binseeai) perish; (kiaa) why are you (lagah-i) attached to them, o (gavaar = fool) unmindful person. 2.

 

ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਭਾਈ ਮੀਤ ਹੈ ਦੇਖੁ ਨੈਨ ਪਸਾਰਿ ॥ ਇਕਿ ਚਾਲੇ ਇਕਿ ਚਾਲਸਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਅਪਨੀ ਵਾਰ ॥੩॥

Kahā so bẖā▫ī mīṯ hai ḏekẖ nain pasār.  Ik cẖāle ik cẖālsahi sabẖ apnī vār. ||3||

 

(Pasaar-i = spread/open, nain – eyes) look and (deykh-u) see, (kahaa) where are (bhaaee) the brothers and (meet) friends – you had?

(Ik-i) some (chaaley) have left and (ik-i) some (chaalsah-i) shall leave, (sabh-i) all in (apni = own) their (vaar) turn – none stays here permanently. 3.

 

ਜਿਨ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸੇ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਰਾਖੁ ਪੈਜ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥

Jin pūrā saṯgur sevi▫ā se asthir har ḏu▫ār.  Jan Nānak har kā ḏās hai rākẖ paij murār. ||4||1||31||

 

(Jin) those who (seviaa = serve) obey commands of the Almighty, (poora) the perfect (satigur-u) true guru, (sey) they get (asthir-u = steady) permanent stay in (duaar-i) abode of (har-i) the Almighty – they unite with IT.

I am Your (daas-u) servant, o (har-i) Almighty; please (raakh-u) protect (paij) honour of Yourself – and unite me with You, o (muraar-i = killer of demon Mur – metaphor for) Almighty, says (jan-u) humble fifth Nanak – on behalf of the creatures. 4. 1. 31.

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਲੋਕਨ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਬੈਸੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਗਉ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਆਪਨਾ ਤੇ ਬੋਲ ਕਰਾਗਉ ॥੧॥

Bilāval mėhlā 5. Lokan kī▫ā vaḏi▫ā▫ī▫ā baisanṯar pāga▫o.  Ji▫o milai pi▫ārā āpnā ṯe bol karāga▫o. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: I (paagau) have put (vaddiaaeeaa) praises (keeaa) of (lokan) people (baisantar-i) in fire, i.e. I have given up sycophancy of powerful people. I (karaagau = do) utter those (bol) words (jio = the way) by which (aapna = own) my (piaaraa) Beloved may be (milai) found, i.e. I praise virtues of the Almighty – and emulate them – by which I may find IT. 1.

 

ਜਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਉ ਦਇਆਲ ਹੋਇ ਤਉ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਗਉ ॥ ਲਪਟਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਮਨੁ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਇਹ ਤਿਆਗਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ja▫o parabẖ jī▫o ḏa▫i▫āl ho▫e ṯa▫o bẖagṯī lāga▫o.  Lapat rahi▫o man bāsnā gur mil ih ṯi▫āga▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

But only (jau) when (jeeo) the revered (prabh) Almighty (hoey) is (daiaal) kind, (tau) then I can (laagau) engage in (bhagti) devotion, i.e. it is with Divine grace that one remembers and emulates Divine virtues.

Otherwise (man) the mind (lapatt-i rahio) clings to (baasna) desires; I can (tiaagau) give (ih) these up (mil-i) by finding (gur) the guru – and following his teachings. 1.

ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਅਤਿ ਘਨੀ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਹੋਮਾਗਉ ॥ ਅਰਥ ਆਨ ਸਭਿ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਨਿਮਖ ਸੋਹਾਗਉ ॥੨॥

Kara▫o benṯī aṯ gẖanī ih jī▫o homāga▫o.  Arath ān sabẖ vāri▫ā pari▫a nimakẖ sohāga▫o. ||2||

                                                       

I shall (karau) make (beynti) request (at-i = very, ghani = large) very humbly and (homaagau = do fire sacrifice) give up (ihu) this (jeeo = mind) life and,

(vaariaa = sacrifice) make offering of (sabh-i) all (aan) other (arth = finances) wealth – everything – for (sohaago) the good fortune of being with (pria) the Beloved. 2.

 

ਪੰਚ ਸੰਗੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਛੁਟੇ ਦੋਖ ਅਰੁ ਰਾਗਉ ॥ ਰਿਦੈ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਭਇਆ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਜਾਗਉ ॥੩॥

Pancẖ sang gur ṯe cẖẖute ḏokẖ ar rāga▫o.  Riḏai pargās pargat bẖa▫i▫ā nis bāsur jāga▫o. ||3||

 

It is (tey) tby – following teachings of – (gur) the guru that one (chuttai) is rid of (sang-u = company) attachment to (panch) the five vices – lust, anger, greed, attachment to the world-play and vanity – as well as (dokh = faults) finding faults/antagonism with others, (ar-u) and (raagau) love.

When (pragaas-u) light (pragatt bhaiaa) shows (ridai) in the mind, i.e. the guru’s guidance on Divine virtues is received, then I shall (jaagaou = awake) be alert – to temptations – (nis-i) night and (baasur) day – all the time. 3.

 

ਸਰਣਿ ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਆਇਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗਉ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲਾਗਉ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੨॥

Saraṇ sohāgan ā▫i▫ā jis masṯak bẖāga▫o.  Kaho Nānak ṯin pā▫i▫ā ṯan man sīṯlāga▫o. ||4||2||32||

 

Only that person in (jis-u) whose (mastak-i = on forehead) destiny this (bhaago) fortune is written, (aaiaa) comes (saran-i) to the sanctuary, i.e. receives guidance from, (sohaagan-i) the fortunate seekers who have found the Master.     

(Tin-i) that person (paaiaa) finds the Almighty and his/her (tan-u) body and (man-u) mind attain (seetlaago = cool) peace, says fifth Nanak. 4. 2. 32.

Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Lāl rang ṯis ka▫o lagā jis ke vadbẖāgā.  Mailā kaḏe na hova▫ī nah lāgai ḏāgā. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: (Laal) the red (rang-u) dye is (lagaa) applied (kau) to (tis-u) that person (jis key) whose (vaddbhaagaa) fortune is good, i.e. one has good fortune to be imbued with Divine love – to live by Divine virtues and commands.

S/he (kadey na) never (hovaee) gets (maila) dirty and is not (laagai daaga = stained) blemished, i.e. no vices touch that person. 1.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਈਆ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਖ ਭਾਇ ॥ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ਭੀਤਰੇ ਛੋਡਿਆ ਨਹ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Parabẖ pā▫i▫ā sukẖ▫ḏā▫ī▫ā mili▫ā sukẖ bẖā▫e.  Sahj samānā bẖīṯre cẖẖodi▫ā nah jā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

S/he (paaiaa) finds (prabh) the Almighty, (sukhdaaeeaa = giver of comfort) the source of solace; IT is (miliaa) found (bhaaey) with love, and gives (sukh) peace.

IT remains (sahj-i) naturally/effortlessly (samaana) present (bheetrey = within) in the mind, and (na jaa-e) cannot be (chhoddiaa) forsaken once IT is experienced within. 1.

ਜਰਾ ਮਰਾ ਨਹ ਵਿਆਪਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਪੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਆਘਾਨਿਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਅਮਰੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

Jarā marā nah vi▫āpa▫ī fir ḏūkẖ na pā▫i▫ā.  Pī amriṯ āgẖāni▫ā gur amar karā▫i▫ā. ||2||

 

(Jaraa = old age) weakness/lack of resistance, and (maraa = death) succumbing, to temptations do not (viaapaee) afflict and (phir-i = then) hence s/he does not (paaiaa = obtains) suffer (dookh) the pain – of births and deaths.

S/he is (aaghaaniaa = satiated) satisfied (pee) drinking (amrit) the life-giving elixir; (gur-i) the guru has (karaaiaa) made him/her (amar-u = not subject to death) imperishable, i.e. s/he lives by Divine virtues and commands, hence does not succumb to vices, the guru enabled this. 2.

 

ਸੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਾ ॥ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਾ ॥੩॥

So jānai jin cẖākẖi▫ā har nām amolā.  Kīmaṯ kahī na jā▫ī▫ai ki▫ā kahi mukẖ bolā. ||3||

 

Only one (jin-i) who (chaakhiaa) tastes, i.e. experiences living by, (amola) the price-less (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands, (so) that person (jaanai) knows its worth – of Naam.

Its (keemat-i = price) value (na jaaeeai) cannot be (kahi = said) stated; (kiaa = what) there are no (bola) words (mukh-i) of mouth (kah-i = say) to describe. 3.

 

ਸਫਲ ਦਰਸੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਪਾਵਉ ਧੂਰਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੪॥੩॥੩੩॥

Safal ḏaras ṯerā pārbarahm guṇ niḏẖ ṯerī baṇī.  Pāva▫o ḏẖūr ṯere ḏās kī Nānak kurbāṇī. ||4||3||33||

 

O (paarbrahm) Supreme Being, (teyra = your, daras = vision) awareness – and practice – of Your virtues and commands makes life (saphal) successful, i.e. one is accepted for union with the Almighty; (teyri) Your (baani = words) commands are (nidh-i) the treasure of (gun) virtues – the valuable guide to live by.

May I (paavau) obtain (dhoor-i) dust of the feet (ki) of (teyrey) Your (daas) servant, i.e. be enabled to follow one who seeks You; I (kurbaani = am sacrifice) adore the seekers, says fifth Nanak. 4. 3. 33.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: O (prabh) Almighty, (kirpa dhaarey) kindly (raakhahu) keep me in (apni = own) Your (saran-i) care; I am (moorkhaarey = foolish) ignorant and (neech-u = low) of unbecoming conduct; I (jaanaoo) know (kachhoo na) nothing about (s-eva) service, I do not know how to live by Your commands. 1.

(Meyrey) my (piaarey) beloved (preetam = dear husband) Master, I (karau) take (maan-u) pride (ooprey) on (tudh-u) You, i.e. in being Your servant/devotee; (ham) we humans are (apraadhi) transgressors (sad) ever (bhooltey) going astray but (tumh) You are benevolent and (bakhsanhaar-e) forgive. 1.

ਹਮ ਅਵਗਨ ਕਰਹ ਅਸੰਖ ਨੀਤਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਦਾਤਾਰੇ ॥ ਦਾਸੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਏ ਕਰਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੨॥

Ham avgan karah asaʼnkẖ nīṯ ṯumĥ nirgun ḏāṯāre.  Ḏāsī sangaṯ parabẖū ṯi▫āg e karam hamāre. ||2||

 

(Ham) we (neet-i) ever (karah) commit (asankh) countless (avgan) transgressions, but (tumh) You still (daataarey = giver) sustain us, (nirgun = un-manifest) unseen.

We (tiaag-i = forsake) forget You, (prabhoo) the Master, and (sangat-i = keep company with) get attached to (daasi = maid-servant) Your benedictions; (ae = these) such are (hamaarey) our (karam = deeds) ways. 2.

 

ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰਿ ਹਮ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਨਾਰੇ ॥ ਲਾਗਿ ਪਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਨ ਸਿਉ ਨਹ ਚਿਤਿ ਖਸਮਾਰੇ ॥੩॥

Ŧumĥ ḏevhu sabẖ kicẖẖ ḏa▫i▫ā ḏẖār ham akiraṯ▫gẖanāre.  Lāg pare ṯere ḏān si▫o nah cẖiṯ kẖasmāre. ||3||

 

(Tumh) You (daiaa dhaar-i) mercifully (deyvhu = give) provide (sabh-u kichh-u) everything, but (ham) we are (akiratghanaarey) thankless – still do not obey Your commands.

We (laag-i parey) are attached (siau) with (teyrey) Your (daan = alms) benedictions but (chit-i) the mind is not focused on what on You (khasmaar-e) the Master sent us here for. 3.

 

ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਵ ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਦਇਆਲ ਗੁਰ ਲੇਹੁ ਮੁਗਧ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੩੪॥

Ŧujẖ ṯe bāhar kicẖẖ nahī bẖav kātanhāre.  Kaho Nānak saraṇ ḏa▫i▫āl gur leho mugaḏẖ uḏẖāre. ||4||4||34||

 

There is (kichh-u nahi) nothing (baahar = outside) beyond (tey = from, tujh = you) Your powers; You (kaattanhaarey = cut) obviate (bhav = birth) rebirth.

I seek (saran-i = sanctuary) to be in care of (gur) the great (daiaal) kind Almighty; please (leyhu udhaarey) protect this (mugadh = foolish) ignorant one, says fifth Nanak. 4. 4. 34.

(Har-i) the Almighty (gopaal-i) Sustainer has made (m-era) my (man-u = mind, tan-u = body) thoughts and actions such as to be (suhaaiaa = pleasant) acceptable to IT; (prabh-u) the Master (kar-i kirpa) was kind (aaiaa) to come (mah-i) in my (ghar = house) mind, i.e. made me aware of IT’s virtues. 1.

ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਭੈ ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਅਬ ਉਤਰੇ ਪਾਰੇ ॥੨॥

Bẖagaṯ vacẖẖal bẖai kātanhāre.  Sansār sāgar ab uṯre pāre. ||2||

 

IT (vachhal) loves (bhagat-i = devotees) those who live by IT’s commands and (kaattanhaar-e = cuts) ends their future (bhai = world) births; (ab = now) thus they (utrey = land, paarey = on far bank) get across (sansaar) the world (saagar) ocean – to the Almighty not to be reborn. 2.

 

ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਬੇਦਿ ਲੇਖਿਆ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੋ ਨੈਨਹੁ ਪੇਖਿਆ ॥੩॥

Paṯiṯ pāvan parabẖ biraḏ beḏ lekẖi▫ā.  Pārbarahm so nainhu pekẖi▫ā. ||3||

 

It is (leykhiaa) written (beyd-i = in Vedas) in the scriptures that (paavan = purification) lifting those (patit) fallen to vices is (birad-u) the tradition of (prabh) the Master; I have (deykhiaa) seen (so) that (paarbrahm-u) Supreme Master (nainhu) with my eyes, i.e. have experienced this phenomenon. 3.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਪਲਾਇਣ ॥੪॥੯॥੧੪॥

Sāḏẖsang pargate nārā▫iṇ.  Nānak ḏās sabẖ ḏūkẖ palā▫iṇ. ||4||9||14||

 

(Naaraain) the Almighty (pragttey) manifested in mind by my participating (saadhsang-i) in holy congregation where IT’s attributes are praised and learnt to emulate; (sabh-i) all (dookh) faults are (palaain = run away) done away with, says (daas = servant) humble fifth Nanak. 4. 9. 14.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: O (prabh) Almighty, (kavan-u = who?) no one (jaanai) knows (tumhri) Your (seyva) service, i.e. what You expect of us humans; because You are (avinaasi) Eternal (alakh = without signs) unseen and (abheyva = of unknown mysteries) mysterious. 1.

 

ਗੁਣ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰੇ ॥ ਊਚ ਮਹਲ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ ਤੂ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Guṇ be▫anṯ parabẖ gahir gambẖīre.  Ūcẖ mahal su▫āmī parabẖ mere.  Ŧū aprampar ṯẖākur mere. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

You are (gahir) deep and (gambheerey) profound with (beyant) countless (gun) virtues; (teyrey) Your (mahl = palaces) abode is (ooch = high) beyond reach, my (prabh) Almighty (suaami) Master; (too) You are (aprampar) Infinite, (meyrey) my (tthaakur) Master. 1.

ਏਕਸ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਦੂਜਾ ॥ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਹੀ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਪੂਜਾ ॥੨॥

Ėkas bin nāhī ko ḏūjā.  Ŧumĥ hī jānhu apnī pūjā. ||2||

 

There is (naahi ko = not any) none (dooja = second) other like You who knows what You expect of the creatures; (tumh hi) You alone (jaanhu) know – or the true guru knows – (apni = own) Your (pooja) worship, i.e. how the creatures should conduct themselves. 2.

 

ਆਪਹੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਵਤ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਸੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥

Āphu kacẖẖū na hovaṯ bẖā▫ī.  Jis parabẖ ḏevai so nām pā▫ī. ||3||

 

O (bhaaee) brethren, (kachoo na) nothing (hovat = happens) can be done by the creatures (aapahu) themselves; (jis-u) one whom (prabh-u) the Almighty (deyvai) gives, (so = that) s/he (paaee) obtains awareness of (naam-u) instructions of the Creator to the soul – from the guru, as guide. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੧੫॥

Kaho Nānak jo jan parabẖ bẖā▫i▫ā.  Guṇ niḏẖān parabẖ ṯin hī pā▫i▫ā. ||4||10||15||

 

Says fifth Nanak: (Jan-u) the person with (jo) whom (prabh) the Almighty (bhaaiaa) is pleased; (tin hi) only that person (paiaa) finds (prabh-u) the Almighty, (nidhaan) the treasure of (gun) virtues. 4. 10. 15.

Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Māṯ garabẖ mėh hāth ḏe rākẖi▫ā.  Har ras cẖẖod bikẖi▫ā fal cẖākẖi▫ā. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: O creature, when you lived by Divine commands (mah-i) in (maat) the mother’s (garabh) womb – unaffected by the world outside – the Creator (haath dey = gave hand) graciously (raakhiaa) protected you; but when you came out, you (chhodd-i  = left) forgot (har-i = Divine, ras-u = taste) Naam or instructions of the Creator to the soul and (chaakhiaa = tasted) ate (bikhiaa) the poisonous (phal-u) fruit, i.e. succumbed to temptations.

 

ਭਜੁ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਸਭ ਛੋਡਿ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥ ਜਬ ਜਮੁ ਆਇ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ਮੂੜੇ ਤਬ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਬੇਹਾਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bẖaj gobiḏ sabẖ cẖẖod janjāl.  Jab jam ā▫e sangẖārai mūṛe ṯab ṯan binas jā▫e behāl. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

You should (chhodd-i) forsake (janjaal = entanglements) attachments to the world-play – to relatives, wealth, status etc, and (bhaj = invoke) recall and pay attention to instructions of (gobind) Master of the world/life.

O (moorrey) foolish person, (jab) when (jam) the agent of Divine justice (aaey) comes and (sanghaarai) brutalizes, (tab) then (tan) the body) shall feel (beyhaal) miserable as it (binas jaaey) is destroyed, i.e. death will be painful and the soul sent to hell – put in cycles of births and deaths. 1.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਪਿਆ ॥ ਕਰਨਹਾਰੁ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਜਾਪਿਆ ॥੨॥

Ŧan man ḏẖan apnā kar thāpi▫ā.  Karanhār ik nimakẖ na jāpi▫ā. ||2||

 

You (thaapiaa = established) deem (tan-u) the body, (man-u) mind and (dhan-u) wealth (kar-i) making believe that (apna = own) they will ever be with you, i.e. you are oblivious of the inevitable death; and do not (jaapiaa) recall and live by instructions of (karanhaar) the Creator even (ik) one (nimakh) for a moment. 2.

 

ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹ ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਪਰਿਆ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਟਲਿ ਬਿਸਰਿਆ ॥੩॥

Mahā moh anḏẖ kūp pari▫ā.  Pārbarahm mā▫i▫ā patal bisri▫ā. ||3||

 

You have (pariaa) fallen (mah-i) in (andh) a blind (koop) well of, i.e. are blinded by, (moh) attachment to the world-play; behind this (pattal-i) curtain of attachments to (maaiaa) the world-play, you have become oblivious, and (bisriaa) forgotten instructions, of (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being. 3.

 

ਵਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ ੧੧॥੧੬॥

vadai bẖāg parabẖ kīrṯan gā▫i▫ā.  Saṯsang Nānak parabẖ pā▫i▫ā. ||4||11||16||

 

One who (vaddai) by good (bhaag-i) fortune, is aware of and, (gaaiaa) sings, (keertan-u = praise) virtues and commands, i.e. recalls instructions, of the Almighty Creator, (santsang-i) in holy congregation; s/he (paaiaa) finds (prabh-u) the Almighty within – making success of human birth. 4. 11. 16.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: (Maat) mother, (pitaa) father, (sut = sons) children, (bandhap) relatives and (bhaaee = brothers) siblings; we look to them for help; (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being (hoaa) is all these and (sahaae) helps, says fifth Nanak. 1.

 

ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਘਣੇ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਗੁਣਾ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਨ ਗਣੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sūkẖ sahj ānanḏ gẖaṇe.  Gur pūrā pūrī jā kī baṇī anik guṇā jā ke jāhi na gaṇe. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Ghaney) abundant (sookh) comforts (aanand) happiness with (sahj) poise; these come by following (poora) the perfect guru, whose (baani = words) teachings are (poori) perfect for success in life; and (ja key) whose (guna) virtues are so (anik) numerous that they (na jaah-i) cannot be (ganey) counted. 1.

ਸਗਲ ਸਰੰਜਾਮ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੇ ॥ ਭਏ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਪੇ ॥੨॥

Sagal saraʼnjām kare parabẖ āpe.  Bẖa▫e manorath so parabẖ jāpe. ||2||

 

(Prabh-u) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (karey = makes, saranjaam = complete) accomplishes (sagal) everything; (manorath = objectives) aspirations are fulfilled of one who (jaapey = remembers) keeps in mind – commands of (so = that) the one (prabh-u) Almighty. 2.

 

ਅਰਥ ਧਰਮ ਕਾਮ ਮੋਖ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ॥ ਪੂਰੀ ਭਈ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੩॥

Arath ḏẖaram kām mokẖ kā ḏāṯā. Pūrī bẖa▫ī simar simar biḏẖāṯā. ||3||

 

The Almighty is (daataa) giver of the gifts of (arth) economic well-being, (dharam = dutifulness) ability to do what is righteous, (kaam) fulfillment of desires/aspiration, and (mokh) emancipation from vices – and hence rebirth.

(Bhaee = happens, poori = completed) this fulfillment is obtained (simar-i simar-i = recalling) by ever being aware of instructions of (bidhaata/bidh-daataa = giver of task) the Creator. 3.

Fifth Nanak has (maaniaa) enjoyed – fulfillment by way of finding the Almighty – (saadhsang-i) by joining holy the congregation.

The Almighty (aaiaa) came (ghar-i) home (aaniaa) brought by (poorey) the perfect guru, i.e. I have fond the Almighty within, with the guru’s guidance. 4. 12. 17.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਨਰ ਜੀਵੇ ॥ ਮਰਿ ਖੁਆਰੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਥੀਵੇ ॥੧॥

Har har nām japaṯ nar jīve.  Mar kẖu▫ār sākaṯ nar thīve. ||1||

 

(Nar) a person (jeevey = lives) does not succumb to temptations in the world-play (japat = remembrance) by recalling (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i) rejuvenating (naam-u) Divine commands – given by the Creator to the soul – one recalls these with the guru’s guidance.

But (nar) a person (saakat = worshipper of Shakti/materialism) who turns away from the Almighty, (mar-i = dies) succumbs and is (theevey = becomes) is (khuaar-u) frustrated – for not attaining peace by union with the Almighty. 1.

 

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੋਆ ਰਖਵਾਰਾ ॥ ਝਖ ਮਾਰਉ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

Rām nām ho▫ā rakẖvārā.  Jẖakẖ māra▫o sākaṯ vecẖārā. ||2||

 

(Naam-u) practice of Divine commands (hoaa) is (rakhvaara) the protector from vices; but the Saakat (maarau) indulges in (jhakh) frivolous acts but remains (veychaara) help-less – does not achieve union. 2

 

ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥ ਮਿਰਤਕ ਫਾਸ ਗਲੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਪੈਰੇ ॥੩॥

Ninḏā kar kar pacẖėh gẖanere.  Mirṯak fās galai sir paire. ||3||

 

(Ghaneyrey) a lot of people (kar-i kar-i = doing and doing) for ever indulge in (nindaa) calumny and doing so (pachah-i) burn – in the fire of envy, which causes calumny.

They are taken by (mirtak = death) Jam, the agent of Divine justice with (phaas) noose (galai) round their necks, (sir-i) on the head and (pairey) on the feet i.e. there is no way to escape from consequences of one’s deeds. 3.

 

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਪਹਿ ਜਨ ਨਾਮ ॥ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਮ ॥੪॥੧੩॥੧੮॥

Kaho Nānak jāpėh jan nām.  Ŧā ke nikat na āvai jām. ||4||13||18||

 

(Kahu) says fifth Nanak: (Jan) the person who (japah-i) remembers and lives by (naam) instructions of the Creator the soul; the Jam does not (aavai) come (nikatt-i) near (ta key) that person. 4. 13. 18.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval (dupad-e) of two stanzas, (ghar-u 4) to be sung to the fourth Beat.    Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

ਕਵਨ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਮਿਲਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪਨੇ ॥ ਪਲੁ ਪਲੁ ਨਿਮਖ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਨੇ ॥੧॥

Kavan sanjog mila▫o parabẖ apne.  Pal pal nimakẖ saḏā har japne. ||1||

 

Question: By (kavan) which (sanjog) association, i.e. by doing what in life, I can (milau) find (apney = own) my (prabh) Master?

Answer: (Pal-u pal-u) every few seconds, in fact (nimakh) every moment, (sadaa) ever (japney) remember, i.e. recall, commands of (har-i) the Almighty to the soul – and live by them. 1.

 

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਨਿਤ ਧਿਆਵਉ ॥ ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਮਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Cẖaran kamal parabẖ ke niṯ ḏẖi▫āva▫o.  Kavan so maṯ jiṯ parīṯam pāva▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Question: (Kavan) what is that (sumat-i) good sense by following (jit-u) which I may (paavau) find (preetam-u) the Beloved Almighty.

Answer: (Nit) ever (dhiaavau) pay attention to (kamal) the lotus (charan) feet, i.e. submit to commands, of the Almighty. 1.

ਐਸੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਸਰੁ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਬੇਰੇ ॥੨॥੧॥੧੯॥

Aisī kirpā karahu parabẖ mere.  Har Nānak bisar na kāhū bere. ||2||1||19||

 

O (prabh) Almighty Master (meyrey = my) of all, please (karhu = do) bestow (aisi = such) this (kripa = mercy) benediction; that I do not (bisar-u) forget You (kaahoo = any, beyrey = time) ever, says fifth Nanak. 2. 1. 19.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: One who (dhiaaey) pays attention to (kamal = lotus, charan = feet) commands of (prabh) the Almighty – the laws of nature (hirdai) in mind, i.e. lives by them,

(sagley) all his/her (rog = afflictions) faults (ga-e) leave and s/he (paaey) obtains all (sukh) comforts, i.e. one can achieve everything by living by Hukam or laws of nature. 1.

 

ਗੁਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟਿਆ ਦੀਨੋ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ ਸਫਲ ਜਨਮੁ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Gur ḏukẖ kāti▫ā ḏīno ḏān.  Safal janam jīvan parvān. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

When (gur-i) the guru (keeno = does/gives, daan = alms) blesses with his teachings, every (dukh-u) suffering caused by transgressions is (kaattiaa = cuts) obviated.

One shuns vices and (jeevan) life (parvaan-u) accepted by the Almighty, making (janam-u) human birth (saphal) successful – by achieving the objective of union with the Almighty. 1.

ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਾਨੀ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥੨॥੨॥੨੦॥

Akath kathā amriṯ parabẖ bānī.  Kaho Nānak jap jīve gi▫ānī. ||2||2||20||

 

 (kathaa = story) virtues of (prabh) the Almighty (akath = cannot be said) are hard to know by oneself; IT’s (baani = words) commands – given to the soul – are (amrit) the life giving guide of life; one (giaani = knowledgeable) who is aware of them (jap-i) keeps them in mind – s/he shuns vices –and  (jeev-e = lives) does not succumb to vices and merges with the Almighty thus ending cycles of births and deaths. 2. 2. 20.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: (Gur-i) the great (satigur-i) true guru (paaee = puts) gives (saant-i) peace – to the mind with his guidance.

When (baajey) musical instruments play (anhad = unceasing) incessantly, i.e. the mind continuously experiences celestial music – message of the Almighty – (sukh) peace (upjey = manifests) is experienced for having recognized the Almighty within and peace. 1.

ਤਾਪ ਪਾਪ ਸੰਤਾਪ ਬਿਨਾਸੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਸਭਿ ਨਾਸੇ ॥੧॥

Ŧāp pāp sanṯāp bināse.  Har simraṯ kilvikẖ sabẖ nāse. ||1||

 

(Taap = illnesses) vices, (paap) transgressions and the resultant (santaap) great distress (binaasey = destroyed) leaves; (sabh-i) all (kilvikh) transgressions (naas-e = run) are obviated by (simrat) keeping in mind virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

 

ਅਨਦੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਨਕਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੈਜ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥੨॥੩॥੨੧॥

Anaḏ karahu mil sunḏar nārī.  Gur Nānak merī paij savārī. ||2||3||21||

 

O (sundar) beautiful (naari) women – the souls thus transformed – (karhu) make (anand) merry; Guru Nanak has (savaar-i) preserved (meyri) my (paij) honor – by making me acceptable to the Almighty, with his guidance. 2. 3. 21.

Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Mamṯā moh ḏẖaroh maḏ māṯā banḏẖan bāḏẖi▫ā aṯ bikrāl.  Ḏin ḏin cẖẖijaṯ bikār karaṯ a▫oḏẖ fāhī fāthā jam kai jāl. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: The human being is (maata = inebriated) oblivious of the Almighty (mad-i = intoxicant) due to engrossment in (mamta = possessive-ness) ego, (moh) attachment to the world-play, and (dhroh) deceit; s/he remains (baadhiaa) bound in (at-i) very (bikraal = dreadful) strong attachments.

(Audh) life is (chhijat = wearing out) being reduced (din din) day by day (karat = doing) while indulging in (bikaar) vices and s/he is (phaathaa) trapped (phaahi = noose) in (jaal) the net of (jam) the agent of Divine justice, i.e. s/he prepares the ground for self-destruction. 1

 

ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖਮ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ਉਧਰਹੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਵਾਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ŧerī saraṇ parabẖ ḏīn ḏa▫i▫ālā.  Mahā bikẖam sāgar aṯ bẖārī uḏẖrahu sāḏẖū sang ravālā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (prabh) Almighty, You are (daiaala) compassionate to (deen) the helpless; I am unable to overcome the vices and seek (t-eri) Your (saran-i = sanctuary) protection.

This (saagar-u) ocean of vices is (at-i) very (bhaari = heavy) huge and (bikham) difficult to cross/overcome; please grant me (sang-i) company of, and (ravaala = dust of feet) ability to comply with teachings of (saadhoo) the guru who can (udhrahu) save me from the vices. 1.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਖਦਾਤੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੁਮਰਾ ਮਾਲ ॥ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟਹੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਦਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥੨॥੪॥੨੨॥

Parabẖ sukẖ▫ḏāṯe samrath su▫āmī jī▫o pind sabẖ ṯumrā māl.  Bẖaram ke banḏẖan kātahu parmesar Nānak ke parabẖ saḏā kirpāl. ||2||4||22||

 

O (suaami) Master,  You are (samrath) the potent (sukhdaat-e) source of solace; (jeeo) the soul, (pindd-u) body and (maal) wealth; (sabh-u) everything, (tumra = your) is given by You  but I deem them mine.

Please (kaatahu) cut (bandhan) bondage of (bharam) delusion of denying You, o (parmeysar) Supreme Master; You (prabh) the Master of (Nanak) the creatures are (sadaa) ever (kripaal) merciful – please enable me never to forget You. 2. 4. 22.

Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Sagal anand kī▫ā parmesar apṇā biraḏ samĥāri▫a.  Sāḏẖ janā ho▫e kirpālā bigse sabẖ parvāri▫ā. ||1||

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: (Parm-esar-i) the Supreme Master (samhaariaa = remembered) maintained (apna) IT’s (birad-u) tradition – to look after the devotees – and (keeaa = made) arranged (sagal) all (anand-u) happiness.

IT (hoey) has been (kirpaala) kind to (saadh = saints, janaa = collection) the congregation – who invokes IT – and (sabh-i) everyone (parvaariaa = family) in the congregation (bigsey) is happy. 1.

 

ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਵਡੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕੀ ਸੂਖ ਮੰਗਲ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Kāraj saṯgur āp savāri▫ā.  vadī ārjā har gobinḏ kī sūkẖ mangal kali▫āṇ bīcẖāri▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

The Almighty (satigur-i) the true guru (aap-i) IT-self (savaariaa) fulfilled (kaaraj = purpose) the wish; IT (beechaaria) thought of granting us (sookh) peace, (mangal) joy with (kaliaan) well-being of the child – son of the Guru – Hargobind has been given (vaddi) long (aarja) life, i.e. he survived from small pox. 1.

ਵਣ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਹਰਿਆ ਹੋਏ ਸਗਲੇ ਜੀਅ ਸਾਧਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਮਨ ਇਛੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਲ ਪਾਏ ਪੂਰਨ ਇਛ ਪੁਜਾਰਿਆ ॥੨॥੫॥੨੩॥

vaṇ ṯariṇ ṯaribẖavaṇ hari▫ā ho▫e sagle jī▫a sāḏẖāri▫ā.  Man icẖẖe Nānak fal pā▫e pūran icẖẖ pujāri▫ā. ||2||5||23||

 

(Van) the trees, (trin) grass, in fact (tribhavan) three worlds, i.e. everything, (hoey = became, hariaa = green) has blossomed and (sagley) all (jeea) creatures (saadhaaria) have the support – by grace of the Almighty. Everyone the Almighty has (pujaaria) fulfilled (sagley) all (ichh) wishes, says fifth Nanak. 2. 5. 23.

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਕਾਟੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Jis ūpar hovaṯ ḏa▫i▫āl.  Har simraṯ kātai so kāl. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval: One (oopar-i) on (jis-u) whom the Almighty (hovat) is (daiaal-u) kind – because of his/her deeds, s/he (simrat = remembrance) keeps in mind and acts on commands of (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਭਜੀਐ ਗੋਪਾਲੁ ॥ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਤੂਟੈ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੁ ॥੧॥

Sāḏẖsang bẖajī▫ai gopāl.  Gun gāvaṯ ṯūtai jam jāl. ||1||

 

We should (bhajeeai) invoke the Almighty (gopaal-u) Sustainer of the world; (gaavat = singing) by praising and emulating (gun) virtues of the Almighty (jaal-u = net) the noose of (jam) the agent of Divine justice (toottai) is broken i.e. one who shuns vices faces no hardship. 1.

 

ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਸਾਧ ਰਵਾਲ ॥੨॥੬॥੨੪॥

Āpe saṯgur āpe parṯipāl.  Nānak jācẖai sāḏẖ ravāl. ||2||6||24||

 

The Almighty is (aapey) IT-self (satigur-u) the true guru as well as (pratipaal) the nurturer, i.e. IT gracious to motivate to find the guru and follow the path that would please IT.

Fifth Nanak (jaachai) seeks (ravaal) dust of the feet of (saadh) the guru – the ability to find, and submit to, the teachings of the guru. 2. 6. 24.
