Composition (mahla 4) of the fourth Guru in Raga Maaroo, (ghar-u 2) to be sung to the second beat.   Invoking the one all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

Japi▫o nām suk janak gur bacẖnī har har saraṇ pare.  Ḏālaḏ bẖanj suḏāme mili▫o bẖagṯī bẖā▫e ṯare.  Bẖagaṯ vacẖẖal har nām kirṯārath gurmukẖ kirpā kare. ||1||

The sage (suk) Sukdev and the king Janak (japio) remembered, and lived by, (naam-u) virtues and commands of, and (parey) placed themselves (sarn-i = in sanctuary) in care and obedience of, the Almighty, (bachni = with words) as taught by (gur) the guru.

(Daalad/daaridr) misery/poverty of the devotee Sudaama (bhanj-i = destroyed) ended when he (miliaa) met – Krishna, metaphor for – the Almighty; all the above (tarey = swam/got across world-ocean) were emancipated because (bhagti) devotion was their (bhaaey) motive.

The Almighty (vachhal-u) loves (bhagat-i) devotion; those who live by (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty are (kritaarath-u) successful; the Almighty (kripa karey) is kind to those (gurmukh-i) who follow the guru’s teachings. 1.

Mere man nām japaṯ uḏẖre.  Ḏẖarū par▫hilāḏ biḏar ḏāsī suṯ gurmukẖ nām ṯare. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (meyrey) mind, those who (japat) remember and live by (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands (udhrey) are emancipated – from vices in life and rebirth on death.

The devotees Dhru, Prahilaad, and Bidar (sut-u) the son of (daasi) a maidservant (tarey = swam) got across the world-ocean, i.e. were emancipated by (gurmukh-i) following the guru’s teachings to live (naam-i) by Divine virtues and commands. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

(Kaljug-i) in the age of conflicts/duality, (bhagat = devoted, janaa = people) the devotees (udhrey) are saved through Naam, (pradhaan-u = head) the supreme (padaarath-u = substance) resource.

The devotees, (nama) Namdev, Jaideo/Jaidev, Kabir, Trilochan and (chamrey = cobbler) Ravidas; (sabh-i) all their (dokh = faults) shortcomings (gaey = went) left them because of practice of Naam.

Those who (lagey) apply themselves to living (naam-i) by Naam, (sey) they (udhrey) are saved; as (sabh-i) all their (kilbikh, paap) transgressions (ttarey) are obviated. 2.

(Jo jo) all those (apraadhi = wrongdoers) who are given to committing transgressions, (sabh-i) all (tin key) their (dokh) faults (parharey = kept away) are obviated if they – learn from the guru and as taught by him – (japai = remember) comply with (naam-u) instructions of the Almighty to the soul.

Ajaamal who was (ravat) involved with (beysuaa) a prostitute (udhrio) was saved (bolai) by uttering the name of (naaraain narharey) the Almighty.

(badhan) fetters of Ugarsain – the father of Kansa – were (toorr-i) broken and he was (karey) made (mukat-i) free from detention by his son; he (paaee) obtained (gat-i) freedom and was rewarded with kingdom for (japat) remembering (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands. 3.

Jan ka▫o āp anūgrahu kī▫ā har angīkār kare.  Sevak paij rakẖai merā goviḏ saraṇ pare uḏẖre.  Jan Nānak har kirpā ḏẖārī ur ḏẖari▫o nām hare. ||4||1||

(Har-i) the Almighty (keeaa = done) has always been (anugrahu) kind (kau) to (jan = servants) the devotees and (angeekaar-u karey) takes their side in fight with evil.

(Govind/govind = master of the world) the Almighty (rakhai) preserves (paij) honour of (seyvak = servant) the devotees; whosoever (parey) places the self in IT’s (saran-i) care and obedience, (udhrey) is emancipated.

But only those to whom (har-i) the Almighty (dhaari = bestows, kirpa = mercy) is kind, that person (dhario) keeps Naam of (harey) the Almighty in mind, says humble fourth Nanak. 4. 1.

(Jati) celibates, (sati) donors, (santokhi) contented people (dhiaaiaa) keep IT in mind and gods like (indraadik) Indra etc (ravia) utter/praise IT’s virtues (mukh-i) from the mouth.

Those who (parey = place, saran-i = in sanctuary) surrender/submit themselves and (japio) remember IT, (tey) they are (bhaaey) pleasing to the Master; all those (gurmukh-i) who follow the guru’s teachings to (japia) remember to obey IT, and (paiaa = land, paar-i = on far shore) get across the world-ocean. 1.

All (jinaa) whose (man) mind is (bheenaa = rinsed) imbued with love of the Almighty, (t-e) those (gurmukh-i) followers of the guru (paar-i paiaa) get across the world-ocean. 2.

Awareness of (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty is (nidhaan-u = treasure) the resource to find God; one who (lai) obtains that awareness from the guru, (paaey) finds (har-i) the Almighty (pat-i/patee) Master.

Naam (chalda = walks, naal-i = with) accompanies the soul (halat-i) in here and (palat-i) in the hereafter; it (laey chhaddaaey) delivers (antey = at last moment) when account of deeds is taken,

(jithai) where (galeeaa = streets) the space is (avghatt) difficult and (bheerreeaa) narrow – with no escape route, i.e. one cannot escape Divine justice; (tithai) there (har-i har-i) the Almighty (karaaey) gets one, who has lived by Naam, (mukat-i) freed, i.e. the agent of Divine justice cannot lay hands on one who lives by Naam. 1.

O (meyey) my (satguraa) true guru, please (drirraaey) create firm commitment, for (har-i har-i) the purifying and rejuvenating virtues of the Almighty, in my mind.

The Almighty is (meyra) my (maat = mother, pitaa = father) parents, (sut = son) children and (bandhapo) relatives, i.e. is ever close to me to help; (mai) I do not look to (avar-u) another (bin-u) except (har-i) the Almighty, o my (maaey) mother/teacher – guru. 1.

O (har-i) Almighty (jagjeevna = life of the world) Creator, please (dhaar-i kripa) be kind to lead me to (sarnaaey) care/guidance of (gur) the great (satigur) true guru.

Ultimately it is when You, (jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty (hoey) are (aap-i = self) Your-self (daiaal-u = compassionate) kind, that IT (meylaaey) unites with IT-self, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 4. 1. 3.

Jah baisālėh ṯah baisā su▫āmī jah bẖejėh ṯah jāvā.  Sabẖ nagrī mėh eko rājā sabẖe paviṯ hėh thāvā. ||1||

O (suaami) Master, (jah) wherever You (baisaalah-i = cause to sit) place me, I (baisaa) sit (tah) there; wherever You (bheyjah-i) send me, I (jaava) go there – I am happy to submit to Your will.

There is (eyko) only one (raaja) king (mah-i) in (sabh) all (nagri) towns, and (sabhey) all (thaava) places (hah-i) are (pavit-u) sacred, i.e. the Almighty’s writ runs everywhere, and they are all sanctified by IT’s presence. 1.

Bābā ḏėh vasā sacẖ gāvā.  Jā ṯe sėhje sahj samāvā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (baaba = father, dear) Almighty, (deyh-i = cause to, vasaa = abide) keep me such that I (gaava = sing) praise and practice virtues and commands of You, (sach) the Eternal,

(tey) by (ja) which I (sahjey) naturally (samaava = absorbed) remain (sahj-i) in state of poise – in obedience to You. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Burā bẖalā kicẖẖ āpas ṯe jāni▫ā e▫ī sagal vikārā.  Ih furmā▫i▫ā kẖasam kā ho▫ā varṯai ih sansārā. ||2||

Anyone believing that (jaaniaa = knowing) s/he knows (tey) by (aapas) the self, if (kichh-u) something is (bura) bad/wrong or (bhalaa) good/right; (eyee) this is the root cause of (sagal) all (vikaara) vices.

But (ih-u) this (hoaa) happens with (phurmaaiaa = order) the will (ka) of (khasam) the Master, and (vartai = happens) applies to everyone in (ih-u) this (sansaara) world – this is the nature given to all mankind by the Creator. 2.

Inḏrī ḏẖāṯ sabal kahī▫aṯ hai inḏrī kis ṯe ho▫ī.  Āpe kẖel karai sabẖ karṯā aisā būjẖai ko▫ī. ||3||

(Indri) sensory organs (hai) are (kaheet) said to create (sabal) powerful (dhaat-u) sensual desires, but (tey) by (kis) whom have (indri) the sensory organs (hoee = happened) been created?, i.e. the Creator IT-self has created sensual desires.

(Karta) the Creator (karai) creates (sabh-i) all (kheyl = plays) phenomena; (koee) some rare person (boojhai) understands (aisa) this way. 3.

Gur parsādī ek liv lāgī ḏubiḏẖā ṯaḏe bināsī.  Jo ṯis bẖāṇā so saṯ kar māni▫ā kātī jam kī fāsī. ||4||

(Dubidha) duality is (binaasi = destroyed) given up (tadey) only then, when one’s (liv) attenton is (laagi) fixed on obeying commands of (eyka) the One Master (parsaadi = with grace) with guidance of (gur) the guru .

Then one (maaniaa) accepts (bhaana) the will of (tis-u = that) the Almighty as (sat = true) inevitable (jo) whatever it may be, i.e. happily lives by Divine will; this is how (phaasi) the noose of (jam) the agent of Divine justice (kaatti = cut) obviated. 4.

Bẖaṇaṯ Nānak lekẖā māgai kavnā jā cẖūkā man abẖimānā.  Ŧās ṯās ḏẖaram rā▫e japaṯ hai pa▫e sacẖe kī sarnā. ||5||1||

(Bhanat-i) says third Nanak: (Kavna = who?) no one (maagai) asks (leykha) account of one’s deeds (ja) when (abhimaana) pride (man-i) in the mind (chooka) ends, i.e. when one does not act by self-will but submits to Divine commands.

(Dharam raaey) the Divine court presenter (paey) places the self in, i.e. seeks, (sarna) protection (ki) of (sachey) the Eternal (japat-u) repeating (taas-u/traah traas-u/traah) fearful entreaties for protection from Divine punishment for asking the account of deeds from the God’s obedient servant. 5. 1.

Mārū mėhlā 3.  Āvaṇ jāṇā nā thī▫ai nij gẖar vāsā ho▫e.  Sacẖ kẖajānā bakẖsi▫ā āpe jāṇai so▫e. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raag Maaroo. (Aavan = coming) births and (jaana = going) deaths do not (theeai) happen, and the soul (vaasaa) staying in (nij) own (ghar-i) house (hoey) happens, i.e. the soul merges with the Creator where it came from and belongs to reincarnate no more.

This happens when (sach-u = true, khajaana = treasure) awareness of Divine virtues and commands is (bakhsiaa) graciously given by (soey = that) the Almighty, who (jaanai) knows whom to give. 1.

Ė man har jī▫o cẖeṯ ṯū manhu ṯaj vikār.  Gur kai sabaḏ ḏẖi▫ā▫e ṯū sacẖ lagī pi▫ār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Eey) o (man = mind) human being, (too) you should (cheyt-i) remember (jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty, i.e. what the Creator told you before birth – and (taj-i) give up (vikaar) vices – evil thoughts – (manhu) from the mind.

(Dhiaaey) pay attention to virtues of the Almighty (sabad-i = with word) with guidance (kai) of (gur) the guru; and (too) you will (lagee) develop (piaar-u = love) obedience (sach-i) to the Eternal. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Aithai nāvhu bẖuli▫ā fir hath kithā▫ū na pā▫e.  Jonī sabẖ bẖavā▫ī▫an bistā māhi samā▫e. ||2||

Those who (bhuliaa) are forgetful (naavhu) of Naam – the instructions given by the Creator to the soul – (aithai = here) in human birth, will not be able to (paaey) put (hath-u) the hand, i.e. remember and live by Naam (kithaaoo = anywhere else) in any other life form.

The soul will (bhavaaeean-i = caused to go round) wander in (sabh-i) all (joni) life forms (samaaey = merge) remaining (bistta = excreta) in the demeaning state of cycles of births and deaths again and again

vadbẖāgī gur pā▫i▫ā pūrab likẖi▫ā mā▫e.  An▫ḏin sacẖī bẖagaṯ kar sacẖā la▫e milā▫e. ||3||

(Gur-u) the guru (paaiaa) is found (vaddbhaagi) by good fortune based on (likhiaa = writing, poorab-i = from past) past deeds.

(Sachaa) the Eternal (laey milaaey) unites with IT-self those, who (andin-u = everyday) ever (kar-i = perform) engage in (sachi) true (bhagat-i) devotion, i.e. live by Naam or Divine virtues and commands, with the guru’s guidance. 3.

Āpe sarisat sabẖ sājī▫an āpe naḏar kare▫i.  Nānak nām vaḏi▫ā▫ī▫ā jai bẖāvai ṯai ḏe▫e. ||4||2||

(Aapey = self) the Creator (saajeean-i) created (sabh) all (sristt-i) universes and (karey-i = does) bestows (nadar-i = sight of grace) grace (aapey) IT-self, as IT sees fit.

There are (vaddiaaeeaa) glories in living (naam-i) by Naam; the Almighty (dey-i) gives these to (tai) those with (jai) whom IT is (bhaavai) pleased with, says third Nanak. 4. 2.

Mārū mėhlā 3.  Picẖẖle gunah bakẖsā▫e jī▫o ab ṯū mārag pā▫e.  Har kī cẖarṇī lāg rahā vicẖahu āp gavā▫e. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Maaroo. O my (jeeo) revered guru, please guide me to have my (pichhley) past (gunah = sins) transgressions (bakhsaaey) forgiven, and (ab) now (too) you please (paaey) put me (maarag-i = on the way) on the right path.

May I (gavaaey = lose) give up the sense of (aap-u = self) self-importance (vichahu) from within and (rahaa) remain (laag-i) attached (charni) to the feet, i.e. submit to commands of (har-i) the Almighty Creator – given to the soul. 1.

Mere man gurmukẖ nām har ḏẖi▫ā▫e.  Saḏā har cẖarṇī lāg rahā ik man ekai bẖā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (dhiaaey) pay attention to (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance.

And pray that I (laag-i rahaa = remain attached, charni = to feet) ever obey commands of the Almighty with (ik) single (man-i = of mind) minded devotion and (eykai) single (bhaaey) love. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Nā mai jāṯ na paṯ hai nā mai thehu na thā▫o.  Sabaḏ bẖeḏ bẖaram kati▫ā gur nām ḏī▫ā samjẖā▫e. ||2||

(Mai) I neither have (jaat-i = caste) high caste nor (pat-i = honor) status in the society and I have neither (theyhu) a place I own nor (thaau) a place to go to.

(Gur-i) the guru (deeaa = caused to, samjhaaey = understand) gave me understanding of Naam – emulation of Divine virtues and obedience of Divine commands; my mind has been (bheyd-i = pierced) deeply influenced (sabad-i) with teachings of the guru and (bhram-u) delusion – about the Almighty being present with me – (kattiaa = cut) removed. 2.

Ih man lālacẖ karḏā firai lālacẖ lāgā jā▫e.  Ḏẖanḏẖai kūṛ vi▫āpi▫ā jam pur cẖotā kẖā▫e. ||3||

(Ihu) this (man-u = mind) human being (karda phirai = keeps doing) remains engrossed in (laalach) aggrandizement and (jaaey) departs (laaga = engaged) engrossed (laalach-i) in aggrandizement – craving for transitory pleasures and thus remaining oblivious of the Almighty.

One who (viaapiaa) remains engrossed in (koorr-i = false, dhandhai = pursuits) pursuit of transitory satisfaction forgetting Divine commands, is (pur-i = in town of) detained by (jam) agent of Divine justice, and (khaaey) receives (chotta = hits) punishment. 3.

Nānak sabẖ kicẖẖ āpe āp hai ḏūjā nāhī ko▫e.  Bẖagaṯ kẖajānā bakẖsi▫on gurmukẖā sukẖ ho▫e. ||4||3||

(Aap-u = self) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self is, i.e. is present in (sabh kichh-u) everything; we should see (naahi koey = not any) none (dooja = second) other, says third Nanak.

IT (bakhsion-u) blesses (gurmukha) those who follow the guru with (kjajaana = treasure) awareness and (bhagat-i = of devotion) practice of Naam or Divine virtues and commands; and they (hoey) experience (sukh-u) peace. 4. 3.

Mārū mėhlā 3.  Sacẖ raṯe se tol lahu se virle sansār.  Ŧin mili▫ā mukẖ ujlā jap nām murār. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Maaroo. One can (ttol-i lahu) search for (sey) those (ratey) imbued (sach-i = with truth) with love/obedience of the Eternal; (sey) they are (virley) rare (sansaar-i) in the world.

(Miliaa = by meeting, tin = them) in their company, one (jap-i) remembers and obeys (muraar-i = killer of the demon Mur – metaphor for) the Almighty – committing no transgressions -, and has (ujla) a clean (mukh-u) face, i.e. no faults are found with him/her in Divine court. 1.

Bābā sācẖā sāhib riḏai samāl.  Saṯgur apnā pucẖẖ ḏekẖ leho vakẖar bẖāl. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (baaba) revered dear, (samaal-i = take care of, ridai = in mind) ever remember commands of (saachaa) the Eternal (sahib-u) Master.

You can (puchh-i) ask (apna = own) the guru and (deykh-u lahu) see for yourself; he would ask you to (bhaal-i) search for this (vakhar-u = merchandise) treasure – Divine commands – within. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

There is only (ik-u) One (sachaa) Eternal Master, (sabh) all soul-wives (seyvdi = serve) wish to unite with, but (milaava) union (hoey = happens) is achieved (bhag-i) by destiny given (dhur-i = from the source) by the Creator – based on past deeds.

Those who (miley) find the Almighty (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance, (sey) they are not (vichhurrey) separated; they (paavah-i) find (soey = that one) the One (sach-u) Eternal Almighty-husband and remain committed to IT. 2.

(Ik-i = one type) some people do not (jaanani) know (saar = awareness) what is (bhagti) devotion and (bhulaaey) are led astray (bharam-i) in delusion, i.e. forget commands of the Almighty, and engage in rituals etc.

(Aap-i = self) the Almighty (vartdaa) is present (vich-i) in (onaa) them – and directs from within; (kichhoo na) nothing (jaaey) can be (karna) done by anything about them, i.e. we should look within and not try to find faults with others. 3.

Jis nāl jor na cẖal▫ī kẖale kīcẖai arḏās.  Nānak gurmukẖ nām man vasai ṯā suṇ kare sābās. ||4||4||

Therefore we should (khaley) stand, i.e. humbly, (keechai) make (ardaas) supplication before the Almighty (naal-i) with (jis-u) whom (jor-u) force (na chalaee) does not work, i.e. we cannot make the Almighty do what we want – only pray.

(Naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty (vasai) abide (man-i) in the mind of (gurmukh-i) one who follows the guru; so if a Gurmukh makes the supplication (ta) then IT (sun-i) listens (karey = does, sabaas-i = praise) blesses him/her, says third Nanak. 4. 4.

Mārū mėhlā 3.  Mārū ṯe sīṯal kare manūrahu kancẖan ho▫e.  So sācẖā salāhī▫ai ṯis jevad avar na ko▫e. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Maaroo. Awareness of Naam or virtues and commands of the Almighty (karey) makes the mind to (seetal-u) a cool (tey) from (maaroo = desert) a state of restless-ness; it (hoey) becomes (kanchan-u = gold) virtuous (manoorhu = from waste iron) from a virtue-less one.

We should (saalaaheeai) praise (so = that) the (saacha) Eternal; there is (na koey) none (avar-u) other (jeyvadd-u) as great (tis-u = that) IT. 1.

Mere man an▫ḏin ḏẖi▫ā▫e har nā▫o.  Saṯgur kai bacẖan arāḏẖ ṯū an▫ḏin guṇ gā▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (andin-u = everyday) ever (dhiaaey) pay attention to (naau/naam) emulating virtues and obeying commands of (har-i) the Almighty.

(Too) you should (araadh) invoke the Almighty (bachan-i = through words, kai = of) as taught by (satigur) the true guru and (andin-u) ever (gaau = sing) praise and emulate (gun) Divine virtues. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Gurmukẖ eko jāṇī▫ai jā saṯgur ḏe▫e bujẖā▫e.  So saṯgur salāhī▫ai jiḏū eh sojẖī pā▫e. ||2||

It is (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance that we (jaaneeai = know) become aware of (eyko) the One Almighty, but only (ja) when we find (satigur-u) the true and when he is pleased to (dey-i = give) impart (bujhaaey = cause to understand) awareness of Naam or Divine virtues and commands. 2.

We should (saalaaheeai) praise and follow (so = that) the (satigur-u) true guru (jidoo) from whom we (paaey) obtain (eyh) this (sojhi) awareness. 2.

Saṯgur cẖẖod ḏūjai lage ki▫ā karan agai jā▫e.  Jam pur baḏẖe mārī▫ah bahuṯī milai sajā▫e. ||3||

Those who (chhodd-i) forsake (satiguru-u) the true guru and (lagey = attach) follow (doojai) another; they go astray (kiaa = what?) will not be able to (karan-i = do) account for their wrongdoings (jaaey = going, agai = ahead) in the hereafter when account of deeds is taken.

Such souls are (badhey = bound) taken to (pur-i) town of, become subject to jurisdiction of (jam) the agent of Divine justice and (maarreeah-i = hit) beaten; they (milai) receive (bahuti = much) harsh (sajaaey) punishment – of being put in cycles of births and deaths. 3.

Merā parabẖ veparvāhu hai nā ṯis ṯil na ṯamā▫e.  Nānak ṯis sarṇā▫ī bẖaj pa▫o āpe bakẖas milā▫e. ||4||5||

(Prabh-u) the Master (meyra = my) of all (hai) is (veyparvaahu = carefree) the highest authority; (tis-u = that) IT has not (til-u = sesame seed) even a bit of (tamaaey) greed, i.e. IT gives expecting nothing in return.

(Bhaj-i = run) do not delay to (pau) place yourself in (tis-u = that) IT’s (sarnaaee = sanctuary) care and obedience, i.e. start living by Naam now and not commit transgressions; the Almighty, will (bakhas-i) bestow grace to (milaaey) unite you (aapey) with IT-self, says third Nanak. 4. 5.
