Mārū solhe 3.  Āpe karṯā sabẖ jis karṇā.  Jī▫a janṯ sabẖ ṯerī sarṇā.  Āpe gupaṯ varṯai sabẖ anṯar gur kai sabaḏ pacẖẖāṯā he. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Maaroo. (Aapey = self) o Almighty, You are (karta) the Creator (jis-u) whose (karna) creation (sabh-u) everyone/everything is. (Sabh-i) all (jea jant) creatures are in (teyri) Your (sarna = sanctuary) care/obedience.

(Aapey = self) the Almighty (vartai) is present (gupat-u) hidden (anatar-i) in (sabh) all, and is (pachhaata) recognized (sabad-i = with word) with guidance (kai) of (gur) the guru. 1.

Har ke bẖagaṯ bẖare bẖandārā.  Āpe bakẖse sabaḏ vīcẖārā.  Jo ṯuḏẖ bẖāvai so▫ī karsėh sacẖe si▫o man rāṯā he. ||2||

The minds of those whom (aapey = self) You (bakhsey) graciously cause to (veechaara) reflect (sabad-i = on the word) on Your commands – given to the soul before birth – are (bharey) full with (bhaddaara = store-houses) treasures of (bhagat-i) devotion/obedience (key) of (har-i) the Almighty.

They acknowledge that You (karsah-i) shall do (jo) what (bhaavai) pleases (tudh-u) You; their (man-u) mind (raata) is imbued (sio) with You (sachey) the Eternal – they happily accept Your will. 2.

Āpe hīrā raṯan amolo.  Āpe naḏrī ṯole ṯolo.  Jī▫a janṯ sabẖ saraṇ ṯumārī kar kirpā āp pacẖẖāṯā he. ||3||

(Aapey = self) the Almighty has given aawareness of IT’s (amolo) priceless (ratan-u = jewel) Naam or virtues and commands to the creatures. And (aapey) IT-self (nadri) graciously (toley = weighs) appraises (tolo = weight) performance.

(Sabh-i) all (jeea jant) creatures are in (tumaari) Your (saran-i = sanctuary) care and obedience; and those to whom You (kar-i kirpa) are kind, i.e. with Your grace, they (pachhaata) recognize it (aap-i = self) within – and comply. 3.

Jis no naḏar hovai ḏẖur ṯerī.  Marai na jammai cẖūkai ferī.  Sācẖe guṇ gāvai ḏin rāṯī jug jug eko jāṯā he. ||4||

One (no) on (jis) whom is bestowed (teyri) Your (nadar-i) grace (dhur-i = from source) by You, s/he no more (marai = dies) falls prey to vices and (jammai = takes birth) comes out them; his/her (pheyri) cycles of births and deaths (chookai) end.

S/he (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues (saachey) of the Eternal (din-u) day and (raati) night; and (jaata = knows) acknowledges that (eko) the One Master pervades everywhere (jug-i jug-i = in all ages) forever. 4.

Mā▫i▫ā mohi sabẖ jagaṯ upā▫i▫ā.  Barahmā bisan ḏev sabā▫i▫ā.  Jo ṯuḏẖ bẖāṇe se nām lāge gi▫ān maṯī pacẖẖāṯā he. ||5||

The Creator (upaaiaa) created (sabh-u) every (jagat-u = world) creature (moh-i) with attachment to (maaiaa) the world-play; including Brahma, (bisan-u) Vishnu and (sabaaiaa) all (deyv) gods.

Those (jo) who (bhaaney = liked by, tudh-u = you) receive Your grace, (sey) they (laagaey) engage in practice (naam-i) of Naam or Divine virtues and commands; they are (pachhaata) recognized as those who act by (mati = counsel, giaan = knowledge) Naam or Divine virtues and commands. 5.

Pāp punn varṯai sansārā.  Harakẖ sog sabẖ ḏukẖ hai bẖārā.  Gurmukẖ hovai so sukẖ pā▫e jin gurmukẖ nām pacẖẖāṯā he. ||6||

(Sansaara = world) the creatures (vartai) conduct themselves sometimes with (paap) transgressions and (pun) good deeds, i.e. do have not steady mind. And thus go through (bhaara = heavy) terrible (dukh-u) grief sometimes being in (harakh-u) joy and at others in (sog-u) sorrow – they lack peace.

One who (hovai) becomes (gurmukh-i) a follower of the guru, (so) that person (paaey) receives/experiences (sukh-u) peace; s/he is one (jin-i) who (pachhaata) understands (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance – and acts by them. 6.

Kiraṯ na ko▫ī metaṇhārā.  Gur kai sabḏe mokẖ ḏu▫ārā.  Pūrab likẖi▫ā so fal pā▫i▫ā jin āp mār pacẖẖāṯā he. ||7||

(Na koi) no one (meyttanhaara) is capable to erase the influence of (kirat-u) past deeds on his/her nature/conduct on his/her own. (Mokh duaara) emancipation from them is obtained by following (sabdey = by the word) teachings (kai) of the guru.

Whatever (likhiaa) is written on one’s nature (poorab-i) with the past actions/experiences, (so) that (phal-u = fruit) consequence is (paaiaa) obtained, i.e. one acts accordingly; one (jin-i) who (maar-i) kills (aap-u = self) ego – and follows the guru – (pachhaata) understands it – and does good deeds. 7.

Mā▫i▫ā mohi har si▫o cẖiṯ na lāgai.  Ḏūjai bẖā▫e gẖaṇā ḏukẖ āgai. Manmukẖ bẖaram bẖule bẖekẖ▫ḏẖārī anṯ kāl pacẖẖuṯāṯā he. ||8||

One (moh-i) attached to (maaiaa) the world-play does not (laagai) attach (chit-u) the mind (sio) with (har-i) God, i.e. does not live by Divine commands. And as a result of pursuing (doojai) other (bhaaey) ideas, suffers (ghanaa) plenty of (dukh-u) grief (aagai = ahead) in the hereafter – when account of deeds is taken and consequences have to be faced.

(Manmukh = self-willed) those who do not obey Divine commands and (bhuley) are misled (bharam-i = in delusion) by other ideas to (bhekhdhaar-i = wearing garbs) engage in pretentions; and (pachhutaata) repent (ant-i = end, kaal-i = at time of) when consequences have to be faced. 8.

Har kai bẖāṇai har guṇ gā▫e.  Sabẖ kilbikẖ kāte ḏūkẖ sabā▫e.  Har nirmal nirmal hai baṇī har seṯī man rāṯā he. ||9||

One who, (bhaanai = will) with grace (kai) of (har-i) the Almighty, (gaaey = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of the Almighty; s/he (kaattey = cuts) ends (sabh-i) all (kilbikh) transgressions and (sabaaey) all resultant (dookh) grief.

(Har-i) the Almighty is (nirmal-u) pristine and obedience to IT’s (baani = words) commands (nirmal) purifies; and one’s (man-u) mind (raata) is imbued (seyti) with love of the Almighty – ever lives in obedience. 9.

Jis no naḏar kare so guṇ niḏẖ pā▫e.  Ha▫umai merā ṯẖāk rahā▫e.  Guṇ avgaṇ kā eko ḏāṯā gurmukẖ virlī jāṯā he. ||10||

One (no) to (jis) whom the Almighty (karey) bestows (nadar-i) grace, (so) that person (paaey) finds the Almighty, (nidh-i) the treasure-house of (gun) virtues. And (rahaaey) keeps the mind (tthaak-i) restrained from (haumai) ego and (meyra = mine) attachment to the world-play.

There is only (eyko) One (daataa = giver) source of (gun) virtues and (avgun) faults, i.e. God IT-self engages one in virtues or transgressions according to the Divine law of acting by one’s nature based on past deeds; some (virli) rare person (gurmukh-i) who follows the guru (jaata = knows) understands this – and keeps away from vices. 10.

Merā parabẖ nirmal aṯ apārā.  Āpe melai gur sabaḏ vīcẖārā.

(Prabh-u) the Almighty Master (meyra = my) of all is (at-i) highly (nirmal-u) pristine and (apaara) Infinite. God (aapey) IT-self (meylai) unites with IT-self those who (veechaara) reflect (sabad-i = word of, gur = guru) on teachings of the guru and comply with them.

Āpe bakẖse sacẖ driṛ▫ā▫e man ṯan sācẖai rāṯā he. ||11||

(Aapey = self) God (bakhsey) graciously (drirraey) creates commitment to (sach-u = truth) Divine virtues and commands, and one’s (man-u) mind and (tan-u) body are (raata) imbued with love (saachai) of the Eternal, i.e. one remains conscious of the Master in thought and deed. 11.

Man ṯan mailā vicẖ joṯ apārā.  Gurmaṯ būjẖai kar vīcẖārā.  Ha▫umai mār saḏā man nirmal rasnā sev sukẖ▫ḏāṯa he. ||12||

(Man-u) the mind and (tan-u) body are dirty, i.e. one is affected by temptations in thoughts and actions, but (jot-i = light) Spirit of (apaara) the Infinite is also present (vich) within. One who (kar-i = doing, veechaara = reflection) reflects on (gurmat-i) the guru’s guidance (boojhai) understands – and resists temptations.

S/he (maar-i) kills (haumai) ego and (sadaa) ever keeps (man-u) the mind (nirmal-u = free of dirt) free of vices (seyv-i = serving) with praise and obedience of the Almighty, (sukhdaata) the giver/source of comfort/peace. 12

Gaṛ kā▫i▫ā anḏar baho hat bājārā.  Ŧis vicẖ nām hai aṯ apārā.  Gur kai sabaḏ saḏā ḏar sohai ha▫umai mār pacẖẖāṯā he. ||13||

There are (bahu) many (baajaara/bazaar) markets and (hatt) shops (andar-i) in (kaaiaa) the body (garr) fort, i.e. the human being keeps thinking of needs of the physical body. There is also awareness of Naam or virtues and commands (at-i) the great (apaara) Infinite Master.

One who (maar-i) kills (haumai) ego – s/he stops acting by self-will – by following (sabad-i = word of) teachings of (gur) the guru; she (pachhaata) recognizes and practices Naam and thus (sadaa) ever (sohai) looks good in (dar-i) the court of, i.e. is liked by, the Eternal. 13.

Raṯan amolak agam apārā.  Kīmaṯ kavaṇ kare vecẖārā.  Gur kai sabḏe ṯol ṯolā▫e anṯar sabaḏ pacẖẖāṯā he. ||14||

Awareness of (ratan = jewel) Naam of (agam) the unreachable/incomprehensible (aapaara) Infinite Master is (amolak-u) invaluable. (Kavan-u = who?) no one (veychara = helpless) who is dependent on the Master (karey = put, keemat-i = price) can evaluate – IT’s -, and must submit to IT.

One (pachhaata) recognizes (sabad-i = word) the Almighty (antar-i) within and (tolaaey = weighs, tol-i = weight) reflects on Divine virtues and commands (sabdai) with guidance (kai) of the guru. 14.

Simriṯ sāsṯar bahuṯ bisthārā.  Mā▫i▫ā moh pasri▫ā pāsārā.  Mūrakẖ paṛėh sabaḏ na būjẖėh gurmukẖ virlai jāṯā he. ||15||

There are (bahut-u) large (bisthaara = expanse) number of Smritis and Shastras, i.e. religious texts; but they (pasriaa = spread) create ideas of (paasaara = expanse) numerous rituals and cause (moh-u) attachment to (maaiaa) the world-play.

(Moorakh = foolish) mindless people (parrah-i) read them but do not (boojhah-i) understand (sabad-u = word) the message; some (virlai) rare person (gurmukh-i) who follows the guru (jaata = knows) understands them. 15.

Āpe karṯā kare karā▫e.  Sacẖī baṇī sacẖ driṛ▫ā▫e.  Nānak nām milai vadi▫ā▫ī jug jug eko jāṯā he. ||16||9||

(Karta) the Creator (aapey) IT-self (karey) does and (kaaraaey) gets things done – being in the creatures. IT leads to the guru who, with his guidance, (drirraaey) creates awareness of (sach-u = truth) Naam.

One by whom awareness of (vaddiaai) glory of Naam (milai) is received, (jaata) recognizes that the Creator is present everywhere (jug-i jug-i = through the ages) at all times, says third Nanak. 16.9.

Mārū mėhlā 3.  So sacẖ sevihu sirjaṇhārā.  Sabḏe ḏūkẖ nivāraṇhārā.  Agam agocẖar kīmaṯ nahī pā▫ī āpe agam athāhā he. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Maaroo. (Seyvihu = serve) be in obedience of (so = that) the One (sach-u) Eternal (sirjanhaara) Creator. IT (nivaaranhaara = dispels) ends (dookh) distress of one (sabdey = through the word) who obeys IT’s commands.

No one can (paai = put, keemat-i = price) evaluate (aapey = self) the Almighty who is (agam-u) beyond reach/comprehension and (athaaha = bottomless, agam = beyond reach) beyond evaluation. 1.

Āpe sacẖā sacẖ varṯā▫e.  Ik jan sācẖai āpe lā▫e.  Sācẖo sevėh sācẖ kamāvėh nāme sacẖ samāhā he. ||2||

(Sachaa) the Eternal (aapey) IT-self (vartaaey = does) causes things to happen by (sach-u = truth) IT’s inviolable commands. (Saachai) the Eternal (aapey) IT-self (laaey) engages (ik = one type) some (jan) persons to IT’s obedience.

Those who (seyvah-i = serve) obey (saacho) the Eternal, (kamaavah-i) practice/live by (saach-u = truth) Naam or Divine virtues and commands; they (samaaha) merge (sach-i) in the Eternal (naamey) through practice of Naam. 2.

Ḏẖur bẖagṯā mele āp milā▫e.  Sacẖī bẖagṯī āpe lā▫e.  Sācẖī baṇī saḏā guṇ gāvai is janmai kā lāhā he. ||3||

One whom (dhur-i = source) God (meyley) leads to (bhagtaa) the devotees by the source – to follow their example – (milaaey) unites him/her (aap-i) with IT-self. (Aapey) IT-self (laaey) engages him/her in (sachi) true (bhagti) devotion.

S/he obeys (saachi = true) Divine (baani = words) commands and (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) Divine virtues; this is (laaha) the benefit of (is-u = this) human (janmai) birth – the opportunity to attain union with the Creator. 3.

Gurmukẖ vaṇaj karahi par āp pacẖẖāṇėh.  Ėkas bin ko avar na jāṇėh.  Sacẖā sāhu sacẖe vaṇjāre pūnjī nām visāhā he. ||4||

(Gurmuk-i) those who follow the guru (karah-i = do, vanaj-u = business dealings) conduct themselves (par-u) but after (pachhanah-i) understanding (aap-u) the self, i.e. understand Naam or Divine virtues and commands within. They (jaanah-i) know none (avar-u) other to obey.

(Saah-u = financier) God is the source of virtues, and (vanjaarey = merchants) human beings are expected to (sachey = true) conduct themselves by those virtues; Naam or Divine virtues and commands are (poonji) the finance by which they (visaaha = purchase) do business, i.e. the guide to conduct themselves. 4.

Āpe sāje sarisat upā▫e.  virle ka▫o gur sabaḏ bujẖā▫e.  Saṯgur sevėh se jan sācẖe kāte jam kā fāhā he. ||5||

(Aapey = self) the Creator (upaaey) creates (sristt-i) the universe and (saajey) gives forms to the creatures. IT (bujhaaey) causes understanding of (sabad-u = word) teachings of the guru (kau) to some (virley) rare person – only few understand Divine virtues and commands as taught by the guru.

(Sey) those (jan) persons who (seyvah-i = serve) obey (satigur-u) the true guru are (saachey) true seekers; they (kaattey = cut) obviate (phaaha = noose) being taken by (jam) agent of Divine justice – who keeps the erring souls away from God. 5.

Bẖannai gẖaṛe savāre sāje.  Mā▫i▫ā mohi ḏūjai janṯ pāje.  Manmukẖ firėh saḏā anḏẖ kamāvėh jam kā jevṛā gal fāhā he. ||6||

The Almighty (bhannai = breaks) causes the creatures to succumb to vices; IT also (gharrey = shapes) causes them to improve, (savaarey = transforms) motivating them to live by Naam and (saajey) shapes their conduct accordingly. (Jant) the creatures who are (moh-i) attached to (maaiaa) the world-play (paajey) get engrossed in ideas (doojai) other than obeying the Master.

(Manmukh = self-willed) those who do not obey, (sadaa) ever (phirah-i = go about) are (kamaavah-i = practice, andh-u = blindness) blinded by attachments to the world-play; they have (jeyvrra = rope, phaaha = noose) the noose of (jam) Divine justice (gal-i) round the neck – and not allowed to merge with God but sent for rebirth. 6.

Āpe bakẖse gur sevā lā▫e.  Gurmaṯī nām man vasā▫e.  An▫ḏin nām ḏẖi▫ā▫e sācẖā is jag mėh nāmo lāhā he. ||7||

Those whom (aapey = self) the Master (bakhsey) graciously (laaey) engages (seyva = service) in obedience to the guru; and they (gurmati) with the guru’s guidance (vasaaey = cause to dwell) keep Naam (mann-i) in mind – to act by it.

They (andin-u = everyday) ever (dhiaaey) pay attention to Naam of (saacha) the Eternal; (naamo) Naam is (laaha) the benefit (mah-i) in (is-u) this (jag = world) human birth – which enables to unite with the Almighty. 7.

Āpe sacẖā sacẖī nā▫ī.  Gurmukẖ ḏevai man vasā▫ī.  Jin man vasi▫ā se jan sohėh ṯin sir cẖūkā kāhā he. ||8||

(Aapey) the Almighty is (sachaa) Eternal and IT’s (naai = naam) commands are (sachi) eternal/ever invilable. (Gurmukh-i) the guru’s guidance (devai vasaai = causes to dwell) enables to keep Naam (mann-i) in mind.

(Sey) those (jan) persons (jin) in whose (man-i) mind, Naam (vasiaa) abides, they (sohey = look good) are approved by the Almighty; (tin = their, sir-i = on the head) their (kaaha = problems) distress – of being reborn – (chooka) ends. 8.

gam agocẖar kīmaṯ nahī pā▫ī.  Gur parsādī man vasā▫ī.  Saḏā sabaḏ sālāhī guṇḏāṯā lekẖā ko▫e na mangai ṯāhā he. ||9||

(Keemat-i = price) worth of the Almighty cannot (paai) be known because IT is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (agochar-u) cannot be perceived by the senses. We should (vasaai = cause to dwell) keep IT (mann-i) in mind, i.e. live by IT’s Naam or virtues and commands, (parsaadi) with grace/guidance of (gur) the guru.

One who (sadaa) ever (saalaahi) praises and emulates virtues of the Almighty (gundaata) giver/source of virtues (sabad-i = with the word) with guidance of the guru (koey na = not any) no one (mangai) asks (leykha) to account for (taaha = that) his/her deeds. 9.

Barahmā bisan ruḏar ṯis kī sevā.  Anṯ na pāvahi alakẖ abẖevā.  Jin ka▫o naḏar karahi ṯū apṇī gurmukẖ alakẖ lakẖāhā he. ||10||

Brahma, (bisan-u) Vishnu and (rudr-u) Shankar/Mahadev are in (seyva = service) obedience (ki) of (tis = that) the Almighty. They cannot (paavah-i = obtain) know (ant-u = limit) IT’s worth as IT is (alakh = without signs) ineffable and (abheyva) with mysteries unknown.

O Almighty, those (kau) to (jin) whom, (too) You (karah-i) bestow (apni = own) Your (nadar-i) grace, they are led to guru and (lakhaaha) know Your otherwise (alkakh) indescribable attributes. 10.

(Seyvak = servants) the seekers (seyvah-i) serve by (mann-i) obeying (hukam-u) commands of (apaara) the Infinite. But (manmukh) self-willed persons do not (jaanah-i = know) understand (saara) the value of obeying Hukam or Divine commands.

One who (manney) obeys God, receives (vaddiaaee) glory and becomes (veyparvaaha = carefree) free of all anxiety – is not answerable for anything – (hukmey = with Hukam) by Divine grace. 12.

(Bhagat) the devotees (sadaa) ever place themselves in (teyri) Your (sarnaai = sanctuary) care and obedience, o Almighty. You are (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (agochar) not perceived by the senses; they do not try to (paai) know Your (keemat-i = price) worth – but only obey.

(Too) You keep them (tio) that way (jiau) as You (bhaavah-i) would like them to be; (gurmukh-i) guided by the guru, they (dhiaaha) pay attention to Naam – and practice it. 15.

Third Nanak (kahai = says) makes this (saach-u = true) sincere (beynanti) supplication; please (deyvhu = give) impart awareness of (sach-u = truth) Naam so that I (samaaha) merge in You, (sach-i) the Eternal. 16. 1. 10.
