Mārū mėhlā 3.  Saṯgur sevan se vadbẖāgī.  An▫ḏin sācẖ nām liv lāgī.  Saḏā sukẖ▫ḏāṯa ravi▫ā gẖat anṯar sabaḏ sacẖai omāhā he. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Maaroo. (Sey) those who (seyvan-i = serve) obey (satigur-u) the true guru are (vaddbhaagi) fortunate – because the true guru leads to God. Their (liv) attention (laagi) is (andin-u = everyday) ever fixed on living (naam-i) by Naam or virtues and commands (saach-i) of the Eternal.

The Almighty, (sukhdaataa = giver of peace) the source of solace is (sadaa) ever (raviaa = pervading) remembered (antar-i) in their (ghatt) minds and they are (omaaha) enthused to live (sabad-i) by commands (sachai) of the Eternal. 1.

Naḏar kare ṯā gurū milā▫e.  Har kā nām man vasā▫e.  Har man vasi▫ā saḏā sukẖ▫ḏāṯa sabḏe man omāhā he. ||2||

When the Almighty (karey) bestows (nadar-i) grace, (ta) then IT (milaaey) leads to the guru; who guides to (vasaaey) keep (naam-u) virtues and commands (ka) of (har-i) the Almighty (ma’nn-i) in mind – as guide for life.

(Man-i) the mind (omaaha) is enthused (sabdey = with word) with guidance of the guru and (har-i) the Almighty (sukhdaata) giver/source of peace is (sadaa) ever (vasiaa = abides) remembered (man-i) in the mind. 2.

Kirpā kare ṯā mel milā▫e.  Ha▫umai mamṯā sabaḏ jalā▫e.  Saḏā mukaṯ rahai ik rangī nāhī kisai nāl kāhā he. ||3||

When the Almighty (kripa karey) is kind, (ta) then IT (meyl-i) leads to the guru who (milaaey) unites with IT. (Haumai = ego) tendency to act by self-will and (mamta) attachments to the world-play (jalaaey = burnt) end (sabad-i) with the guru’s word/teachings.

One then (rahai) remains (mukat-i) free from vices (rangi) in love of (ik) the One Almighty; and (naahi) does not have (kaahaa = problems) conflicts (naal-i) with (kisai) anyone. 3.

Bin saṯgur seve gẖor anḏẖārā.  Bin sabḏai ko▫e na pāvai pārā.  Jo sabaḏ rāṯe mahā bairāgī so sacẖ sabḏe lāhā he. ||4||

(Bin-u) without (sevey = serving) following the guru, one remains in (ghor = pitch, andhaara = darkness) absolute ignorance – of how to lead life. (Koey na) no one (paavai = finds, paaraa = far shore) gets across the world ocean (bin-u) without (sabdey = word) guidance of the guru.

(Jo) those who are (raatey) imbued (sabad-i = with word) with the guru’s teachings, (mahaa) greatly (bairaagi) yearn for the Almighty; (so) they (laaha) find (sach-u) the Eternal (sabdey) with the guru’s guidance. 4.

Ḏukẖ sukẖ karṯai ḏẖur likẖ pā▫i▫ā.  Ḏūjā bẖā▫o āp varṯā▫i▫ā.  Gurmukẖ hovai so alipaṯo varṯai manmukẖ kā ki▫ā vesāhā he. ||5||

(Dukh-u) discomfort and (dukh-u) comfort is (likh-i = written, paaiaa = put) ordained (kartai) by the Creator (dhur-i) at the source – before birth based on past deeds. The Creator (aap-i) IT-self (vartaaiaa) causes some to engage in (bhaau = ideas, dooja = other) duality – which is the cause of suffering.

One who (hovai) is (gurmukh-i) a follower of the guru (vartai) remains (alipto = untouched) detached from vices; but (manmukh) one who acts by self-will (kiaa = what?) cannot (veysaaha) be relied upon not to succumb to vices. 5.

Se manmukẖ jo sabaḏ na pacẖẖāṇėh.  Gur ke bẖai kī sār na jāṇėh.  Bẖai bin ki▫o nirbẖa▫o sacẖ pā▫ī▫ai jam kādẖ la▫egā sāhā he. ||6||

Question: Who is a Manmukh?

Manmukh are (sey) those (jo) who do not follow the guru and hence do not (pachhaanah-i) recognize (sabad-u) Divine commands, or Naam within. They do not (jaanh-i = know) realize (saar) the value of (bhai) obedience (kai) of (gur) the guru.

They (kio = how?) cannot (paaeeai) find (nirbhau = free of fear – answerable to none) the Supreme (sach-u) Eternal Master; and (jam) the agent of Divine justice (laeyga) shall (kaaddh-i = take out, saahaa = breath/life) subject them to die – and be reborn again and again. 6.

Afri▫o jam māri▫ā na jā▫ī.  Gur kai sabḏe neṛ na ā▫ī.  Sabaḏ suṇe ṯā ḏẖūrahu bẖāgai maṯ māre har jī▫o veparvāhā he. ||7||

(Jam-u) the agent of Divine justice is (aphario – cannot be caught) is beyond human control and (na jaaee) cannot be (maariaa = killed) be over-ridden. But does not (aai) come (neyrr-i) near one who complies (sabdey = with word) with instructions (kai) of (gur) the guru

If it (suney = hears) knows that a person lives by (sabad-u) Divine commands, (ta) then it (bhaagai) runs away (doorhu) from far; (mat-u) lest (veyparvaahu = carefree) the Supreme (jeeo) revered (har-i) Almighty (maarey = hits) punishes it. 7.

Har jī▫o kī hai sabẖ sirkārā.  Ėhu jam ki▫ā kare vicẖārā.  Hukmī banḏā hukam kamāvai hukme kadẖ▫ḏā sāhā he. ||8||

(Jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty has (sirkaara = dominion) jurisdiction (sabh) everywhere, i.e. no one can disobey IT’s commands. (Kiaa) what can (eyhu) this (vichaara) helpless (jam-u) agent of Divine justice (karey) do, – as it is not allowed to go near one who obeys Divine commands.

It is (bandaa) a servant (hukmi) subject to Divine commands and (kamaavai) complies with (hukam-u) Divine commands; (kaddhda = takes out, saahaa = breath/live) puts the erring souls  to die again and again (hukmey) as instructed by the Almighty. 8.

Gurmukẖ sācẖai kī▫ā akārā.  Gurmukẖ pasri▫ā sabẖ pāsārā. Gurmukẖ hovai so sacẖ būjẖai sabaḏ sacẖai sukẖ ṯāhā he. ||9||

One (gurmukh-i) the guru teaches that (akaara) all forms of existence have (keeaa) been created (saachai) by the Eternal; s/he sees the Creator (pasriaa) present in (sabh-u) the whole (paasaara) expanse.

One who (hovai) is (gurmukh-i) the guru’s follower, (so) that person (boojhai) recognizes (sach-u) the Eternal; (taaha = that) s/he obtains (sukh-u) peace (sabad-i = in Word) by obeying commands (sachai) of the Eternal. 9.

Gurmukẖ jāṯā karam biḏẖāṯā.  Jug cẖāre gur sabaḏ pacẖẖāṯā.

The Gurmukh (jaata) knows that the Almighty (bidhaata) decides one’s destiny (karam-i) based on deeds. (Sabad-i = with word) with guidance of (gur) the guru, one (pachaata) recognizes IT to pervade (jug = ages, chaarey = all four) in all ages.

Gurmukẖ marai na janmai gurmukẖ gurmukẖ sabaḏ samāhā he. ||10||

One (gurmukh-i) who follows the guru does not (marai = die) succumb to vices and hence is not (janmai) reborn; a Gurmukh (samaahaa = remains absorbed) lives in obedience (sabad-i) to Divine commands – guided by the guru. 10.

Gurmukẖ nām sabaḏ sālāhe.  Agam agocẖar veparvāhe.  Ėk nām jug cẖār uḏẖāre sabḏe nām visāhā he. ||11||

(Sabad-i) with teachings of the guru a Gurmukh (salaahey) praises and practices (naam-i) of Naam – virtues and commands of (veyparvaahey = carefree) the highest authority the Almighty who is hard to understand by one, being (agam) beyond reach/comprehension, (agochar) not perceived by the senses – a seeker does not evaluate but obeys the Master.

Practice of Naam of (eyk) the One Creator (udhaarey) saves the creatures (jug = ages, chaar-i = four) in all ages; (sabdey = with word) as taught by the guru, the Gurmukh places (visaahaa = faith) reliance on Naam. 11.

Gurmukẖ sāʼnṯ saḏā sukẖ pā▫e.  Gurmukẖ hirḏai nām vasā▫e.  Gurmukẖ hovai so nām būjẖai kāte ḏurmaṯ fāhā he. ||12||

(Gurmukh-i) one who follows the guru is (sadaa) ever (saant-i) at peace and (paaey) experiences (sukh-u) comfort; a Gurmukh (vasaaey = abides) keeps Naam (hirdai) in mind.

One who (hovai) is a Gurmukh, (so) that person (boojhai) understand Naam and (kaattey = cuts) frees the self from (phaahaa = noose) grip (durmat-i) of evil counsel/thoughts. 12.

Gurmukẖ upjai sācẖ samāvai.  Nā mar jammai na jūnī pāvai.  Gurmukẖ saḏā rahėh rang rāṯe an▫ḏin laiḏe lāhā he. ||13||

A Gurmukh (upjai) is created by, and ultimately (samaavai) merges (saach-i) in, the Eternal. S/he does not (mar-i = die) succumb to vice and hence not (jammai) born as the Creator does not (paavai) put him/her (jooni) in the womb again.

Gurmukhs (sadaa) ever (rahah-i) remain (raatey) imbued (rang-i) with love of the Almighty; they (andin-u = everyday) ever (laidey) take (laahaa = profit) advantage of human birth to remember the Creator and not be reborn. 13.

Gurmukẖ bẖagaṯ sohėh ḏarbāre.  Sacẖī baṇī sabaḏ savāre.  An▫ḏin guṇ gāvai ḏin rāṯī sahj seṯī gẖar jāhā he. ||14||

The Gurmukh (bhagat) devotee (sohah-i = look good) is honoured (darbaarey) in Divine court; because s/he is (savaarey) transformed by following (baani = word) commands (sachi) of the Eternal (sabd-i = by the word) guided by the guru.

S/he (andin-u = everyday) ever (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) Divine virtues and (jaahaa = go) get (ghar-i = home) to the Almighty – where the soul belongs – (seyti) with (sahaj) ease. 14.

Saṯgur pūrā sabaḏ suṇā▫e.  An▫ḏin bẖagaṯ karahu liv lā▫e.  Har guṇ gāvahi saḏ hī nirmal nirmal guṇ pāṯisāhā he. ||15||

(Poora) the perfect (satigur-u) true guru (sunaaey = causes to hear) gives awareness of (sabad-u) Divine commands; and motivates to (karhu) engage in (laaey = fixing, liv = attention) single-minded (bhagat-i = devotion) obedience.

Those who (gaavah-i = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty are (sad hi) forever (nirmal = clean) free of vices; (gun) virtues of (paatsaaha = emperor) the Sovereign Almighty are (nirmal) pristine. 15.

Guṇ kā ḏāṯā sacẖā so▫ī.  Gurmukẖ virlā būjẖai ko▫ī.  Nānak jan nām salāhe bigsai so nām beparvāhā he. ||16||2||11||

(Sachaa) the Eternal is (soee = only that) the lone (daataa = giver) source of (gun) virtues. (Koi) some (virla) rare (gurmukh-i) follower of the guru (boojhai) understands Divine virtues.

(Jan-u = servant) a seeker (salaahey) praises and practices (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands and (bigsai) feels happy; (so) that (naam-u) Almighty is (beyparvaahaa = carefree) is answerable to none, i.e. is the highest Master, i.e. most profound in virtues, says third Nanak. 16. 2. 11.

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Maaroo. (Seyvihu = serve) obey (jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty who is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (apaara) Infinite, i.e. obey but not try to evaluate. (Tis = of, da = of) IT’s (antu-u = limit, paaravaara = far end) measure cannot (paaeeaai) known.

When IT (raviaa = present) abides, i.e. is remembered, (antar-i) in (ghatt) mind (parsaad-i) with grace/guidance of (gur) the guru; there is (agaahaa) deep (mat-i) understanding in (tit-u) that (ghatt-i) mind. 1.

(Eko = only one, soi = that) the One Master (vartai) is present and acts (mah-i) in (sabh) all creatures – but hidden.  IT (hoee = happens, pargatt-u = manifest) is recognized within (parsaadi) with grace/guidance of the guru.

IT is (jagjeevan-u = life of the world) the Creator, who (karey = does, pratipaal = nurturing) nurtures (sabhna) all and (sambaaha) reaching (rijak-u) the wherewithal to them. 2.

(Poorai) the perfect (satigur-i) true guru (boojh-i) understands and (bujhaaiaa) imparts the understanding, that (sabh-u) the whole (jagat-u = word) creation has (upaaiaa) been created (hukmey) by Hukam or Divine commands (hi) alone – and the Creator is to be obeyed.

Hukam (sir-i = on the head) applies to (saahaa) the kings and (paatisaaha) emperors; (soee) that person who (manney) obeys (hukam-u) Divine commands (paaey) attains (sukh-u) peace. 3.

Sacẖā saṯgur sabaḏ apārā.  Ŧis ḏai sabaḏ nisṯarai sansārā.  Āpe karṯā kar kar vekẖai ḏeḏā sās girāhā he. ||4||

The Almighty (satigur-u) true guru is (sachaa) Eternal and domain of IT’s (sabad-u = Word) commands have (apaaraa) infinite. (Sansaara = world) the creatures (nistarai) get across the world-ocean by obedience to (dai = of, tis = that) IT’s (sabad-i) commands.

(Aapey = self) the Almighty (karta) Creator (kar-i kar-i) creates and (veykhai = sees) watches the creatures for their conduct and takes care of them; IT (deyda) gives (saas) breath and (giraaha = morsels) food, i.e. sustains them. 4.

IT (bujhaaey) gives the understanding of IT-self to (kisah-i) some rare person (madhey) amongst (kott-i = crore/ten million) millions, i.e. some rare person understands and obeys Divine commands. (Ratey) imbued (sabad-i) with teachings (kai) of (gur) the guru, s/he (laaey) develops (rang-u) love for the Almighty.

(Har-i) the Almighty (bakhsey) graciously imparts (bhagat-i) devotion and (salaaha = praise) awareness of IT’s virtues to him/her; and s/he (sadaa) ever (saalaahah-i) praises and obeys (har-i) the Almighty (sukhdaata = giver of comfort) source of peace and solace. 5.

Saṯgur sevėh se jan sācẖe.  Jo mar jamėh kācẖan kācẖe.  Agam agocẖar veparvāhā bẖagaṯ vacẖẖal athāhā he. ||6||

Those who (seyvah-i = serve) obey (satigur-u) the true guru, (sey) they are (saachey) true seekers – and are not subject to rebirth. (Jo) those who disobey the guru and (mar-i = die) succumb to vices (jammah-i) are reborn; they are (kaachan kaachey – antonym of true) not true seekers.

The Almighty is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension, (agochar-u) not perceived by the senses and (veyparvaaha = carefree) Supreme, is (atthaaha) unfathomable; IT (vachhal-u) loves (bhagat-i) the devotees – those who obey. 6.

Saṯgur pūrā sācẖ driṛ▫ā▫e.  Sacẖai sabaḏ saḏā guṇ gā▫e.  Guṇḏāṯā varṯai sabẖ anṯar sir sir likẖ▫ḏā sāhā he. ||7||

One in whom (poora) the perfect (satiguru-u) true guru (drirraaey) creates firm understanding and commitment (saach-i) to truth – Naam or Divine virtues and commands; that person (sadaa) ever (gaaey = sings) praises and practices/emulates (gun) Divine virtues by following (sachai) the true (sabad-i = word) teachings of the guru.

The Almighty (gundaata) giver of virtues, (vartai) is present (anatar-i) in (sabh) all; (saahaa) financier – source of virtues watches and – (likhda) writes the account of (sir-i sir-i = on every head) everyone. 7.

To one (gurmukh-i) who follows the guru, the Almighty (sadaa) ever (jaapai) seems (hadoor-i) present with him/her. (So) that (jan-u) person (seyvai = serves) obeys – lives by virtues and commands of – the Almighty (sabdey = with the word) guided by the guru and (dhraapai = satiated) is happy.

S/he (andin-u = everyday) ever (seyvah-i = serves) obeys (baani = words) commands (sachi = true) of the Eternal; s/he (omaahaa) is enthused to obey (sabad-i) commands of (sachai) the Eternal. 8.

(Agiaani) the ignorant Brahmin (andha = blind) blinded by other thoughts (driaaraey) causes commitment to (bahu) numerous (karam) rituals. But such (karam) rituals done (manhatth = obstinately) in ego (paaey) put one (joni) in the womb, i.e. lead to birth, (phir-i) again.

And (sabad-i = with word) with guidance (kai) of (gur) the guru, one (laaey = fixes, chit-u = mind) focuses attention on living (naam-i) by virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty.
