Bẖairo mėhlā 3.  Mansā manėh samā▫e lai gur sabḏī vīcẖār.  Gur pūre ṯe sojẖī pavai fir marai na vāro vār. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Bhairau. O human being, (veechaar) reflect (sabdi = on word) on teachings of (gur) the guru to (smaaey lai) dissolve (mansa = wishes of mind) own ideas (manah-i) in the mind – so that you do not keep succumbing to vices under their influence.

Once (sojhi) awareness (pavai = is put) is received (tey) from (poorey) the perfect guru, (phir) then one does not (marai = die) fall prey to desires and hence not – be born to die – (vaaro vaar) again and again. 1.

Man mere rām nām āḏẖār.  Gur parsāḏ param paḏ pā▫i▫ā sabẖ icẖẖ pujāvaṇhār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Meyrey) my (man) mind, make awareness of (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands as (aadhaar-u = support) the mainstay of life – guided by the guru, to find God:

(Param) the Supreme (pad-u) status – of finding God is (paaiaa) attained (parsaad-i = with grace) with guidance of (gur) the guru; practice of Naam (pujaavanhaar-u) enables fulfillment of (sabh) all (ichh) wishes – the foremost being to find God.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Sabẖ mėh eko rav rahi▫ā gur bin būjẖ na pā▫e.  Gurmukẖ pargat ho▫ā merā har parabẖ an▫ḏin har guṇ gā▫e. ||2||

(Eyko = only one) the Same Almighty (rav-i rahiaa) is present (mah-i) in (sabh) all, but one does not (paaey) get (boojh) the realization (bin-u) without (gur) the guru.

(Har-i) the Almighty (prabh-u) Master (meyra = my) of all (pargatt-u hoaa) manifests (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance to (andin-u = everyday) ever (gaaey = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty. 2.

(Har-i) the Almighty (eyk-u = one) alone (sukhdaata) is the bestower of comfort/solace; one cannot (paah-i) obtain (sukh-u = comfort) solace from (hor = other, thai = place) anywhere else.

(Jini) those who do not (seyviaa = serve) follow (satigur-u) true guru, (daataa = giver) the imparter of awareness of Naam, (gaey = go) depart from the world (pachhutaah-i) repenting (ant-i) at the end of life. 3.

Saṯgur sev saḏā sukẖ pā▫i▫ā fir ḏukẖ na lāgai ḏẖā▫e.  Nānak har bẖagaṯ parāpaṯ ho▫ī joṯī joṯ samā▫e. ||4||7||17||

One (sadaa) ever (paaiaa) experiences (sukh-u = peace) succour (seyv-i = serving) by following teachings of (sat-gur-u) the true guru, i.e. God is found within; (phir-i) then (dukh-u = pain) distress caused by transgressions does not (dhaaey = running) come to (laagai) afflict.

One who (praapat-i hoee = is received) develops (bhagat-i) devotion to (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. lives in obedience to the Almighty, his/her (joti) soul (smaaey) merges (jot-i) in the Supreme Spirit – God -, says third Nanak. 4. 7. 17.

Bẖairo mėhlā 3.  Bājẖ gurū jagaṯ ba▫urānā bẖūlā cẖotā kẖā▫ī.  Mar mar jammai saḏā ḏukẖ pā▫e ḏar kī kẖabar na pā▫ī. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Bhairau. The objective of human life is to find, and merge with the Almighty, which is achieved with the guru’s guidance. (Jagat-u = world) the creature is (bauraana = mad) directionless (baajh) without the guru, (bhoola) strays from the path of practice of virtues and commands of God and (khaaee) receives (chotta) hits – is frustrated in effort to find God.

S/he (mar-i = dies) falls prey to vices and (mar-i) dies to be (jammai) be born, (sadaa) ever (paaey) experiences (dukh-u) distress because of not (paaee) having (khabar-i = news) awareness (ki) of (dar) the gate/abode of, i.e. does not find, the Almighty this way. 1.

Mere man saḏā rahhu saṯgur kī sarṇā.  Hirḏai har nām mīṯẖā saḏ lāgā gur sabḏe bẖavjal ṯarṇā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Meyrey) my (man) being, (sadaa) ever (rahaahu) be in (sarna = sanctuary) care and obedience of (satigur) the true guru.

Remember, one who (sad) ever (laaga) finds practice of Naam or virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty (meettha = sweet) enjoyable, s/he practices Naam and (tarnaa = shall swim) gets across (bhavjal-u) the world-ocean of vices (sabdey = with the word) with guidance (gur) of the guru.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Bẖekẖ karai bahuṯ cẖiṯ dolai anṯar kām kroḏẖ ahaʼnkār.  Anṯar ṯisā bẖūkẖ aṯ bahuṯī bẖa▫ukaṯ firai ḏar bār. ||2||

One may (karai) wear (bahut-u) many (bheykh) garbs, i.e. perform numerous rituals, but (chit-u) the mind (ddolai = wavers) remains unsteady under influence of (kaam-u) lust, (krodh-u) anger and (ahankaar-u) vanity present (antar-i) within.

One has (at-i) very (bhaari = weighty) strong (tisaa = thirst, bhookh = hunger) desires and (phirai) wanders (dar = house, baar-u = gate) house-to-house (bhaukat) barking, i.e. tries to find peace in whatever way s/he can. 2.

Gur kai sabaḏ marėh fir jīvėh ṯin ka▫o mukaṯ ḏu▫ār.  Anṯar sāʼnṯ saḏā sukẖ hovai har rākẖi▫ā ur ḏẖār. ||3||

But if s/he (marah-i) dies (sabad-i) by the word, i.e. submits to guidance (kai) of the guru, (duaar-i) the door to (mukat-i) emancipation – from vices – and hence of acceptance by the Almighty – opens for them.

Those who (raakhiaa) keep (har-i) the Almighty (dhaar-i) enshrined (ur-i) in mind, i.e. those who remain in obedience to Divine commands, they (hovai = happens) experience (sukh-u) comfort and (saant-i) peace (antar-i) within. 3.

Ji▫o ṯis bẖāvai ṯivai cẖalāvai karṇā kicẖẖū na jā▫ī. Nānak gurmukẖ sabaḏ samĥāle rām nām vadi▫ā▫ī. ||4||8||18||

There is (kichhoo na) nothing that can (karna) be done by the creatures; (jiau) as (tis-u = that) the Almighty (bhaavai) is pleased, (tivai) that way IT (chalaavai = drives) causes them to act.

(Gurmukh-i) the guru’s follower (samhaaley = takes care) acts by (sabad-u = word) directions of the guru to live (naam-i) by Naam of (raam) the Almighty and receives (vaddiaaee = praise) glory/acceptance by God, says third Nanak. 4. 8. 18.

Bẖairo mėhlā 3.  Ha▫umai mā▫i▫ā mohi kẖu▫ā▫i▫ā ḏukẖ kẖate ḏukẖ kẖā▫e.  Anṯar lobẖ halak ḏukẖ bẖārī bin bibek bẖarmā▫e. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Bhairau. (Khuaaiaa) led astray by (haumai = ego) acting by self-will and (moh-i) with attachment to (maaiaa) the world-play, the human being (khattey) earns and (khaaey) eats, i.e. experiences, (dukh-u) distress.

S/he (bharmaaey) is deluded (bin-u = without) due to lack of (bibeyk) discernment and experiences (bhaari = weighty) great (dukh-u) distress (antar-i) within, like (halak-u) a rabid dog. 1.

Manmukẖ ḏẖarig jīvaṇ saisār.  Rām nām supnai nahī cẖeṯi▫ā har si▫o kaḏe na lāgai pi▫ār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Jeevan-u) life (manmukh-i) of a self-willed person – who does not obey the Creator – (saisaar-i) in the world is (dhrig-u) disgraceful.

S/he does not (cheytiaa) think of (naam-u) virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty even (supnai) in a dream; and (kadey na) never (laagai) develops (piaar-u) love (sio) for, i.e. is not obedient to, (har-i) God. 1

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Pasū▫ā karam karai nahī būjẖai kūṛ kamāvai kūṛo ho▫e.  Saṯgur milai ṯa ultī hovai kẖoj lahai jan ko▫e. ||2||

S/he (karai = does, karam = deeds) acts thoughtlessly (pasooaa = of animals) like an animal, but does not (boojhai) realize that; s/he (kamaavai) commits (koorr-u = falsehood) transgressions and (hoey) becomes/is considered (koorro = false) insincere – and is hence is unacceptable here and in the hereafter.

When s/he (milai) meets (satigur-u) true guru – and obeys him – (ta) then his/her nature (hovai = becomes, ultti = reversed) turns away from vices; but (koey) some rare such (jan-u) person (khoj-i) searches and (lahai) finds the Almighty within. 2.

Har har nām riḏai saḏ vasi▫ā pā▫i▫ā guṇī niḏẖān. Gur parsādī pūrā pā▫i▫ā cẖūkā man abẖimān. ||3||

(Har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam-u) Divine commands (sad) ever (vasiaa) abide in his/her (ridai) mind; s/he (paaiaa) finds the Almighty (nidhaan-u) treasure (guni) of virtues.

(Poora = perfect) the Almighty (paaiaa) is found (parsaadi) with grace/guidance of (gur) the guru when (abhimaan-u) pride/ego (chooka = ends) leaves (man) the mind – as God and pride cannot coexist within. 3.

Āpe karṯā kare karā▫e āpe mārag pā▫e.

(Karta) the Creator (aapey) IT-self (karey) creates the creatures, and (karaaey = causes to do) engages them in their allotted tasks; and IT-self (paaey) puts them (maarag-i) on the path – causes to give up transgressions.

Āpe gurmukẖ ḏe vadi▫ā▫ī Nānak nām samā▫e. ||4||9||19||

(Aapey = self) the Almighty (dey = gives) bestows (vaddiaa) glory on (gurmukh-i) those who follow the guru; they (samaaey) remain absorbed (naam-i) in Naam, says third Nanak. 4. 9. 19.

————————————————————————–

Note: In the next two Shabads, the third Guru describes the story of a young boy Prahlad who had deep faith in, and sang in praise, of God. Harnaakhas, his father – a demon king – had ordered that everyone should worship him and not God, but the boy refused to do so. The Shabad begins with Prahlad addressing his teacher who wanted to write the name of Harnakhas on his tablet but the latter wanted God’s name to be written.

Bẖairo mėhlā 3.  Merī patī▫ā likẖahu har govinḏ gopālā.  Ḏūjai bẖā▫e fāthe jam jālā.  Saṯgur kare merī parṯipālā.  Har sukẖ▫ḏāṯa merai nālā. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Bhairau. Prahlad tells his teacher: (Likhahu) write the name of (har-i) the Almighty (govind) Master and (gopaala) Sustainor of the world on (meyri) my (patteeaa/patti) tablet. Those with (doojai) other (bhaaey) love (phaathey) shall be trapped in (jaala) net/noose of (jam) the agent of Divine justice – punished.

I am not scared of any punishment; (satigur-u) true guru (karey = does, pratipaala = nurturing/taking care) shall protect (meyri = my) me. (Har-i) the Almighty (sukhdaata) giver of succour is (naala) with (meyrai = my) me. 1.

Gur upḏes par▫hilāḏ har ucẖrai.  Sāsnā ṯe bālak gam na karai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Prahlad (uchrai = utters) praises (har-i) God (updeys-i) as instructions of (gur) the guru – within. (Baalak-u) the child is not (karey = does, gam-u = grief) terrified (tey) by (saasna) threats. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

His (maata) mother (updeysai) advises; my (piaarey) dear (putr) son, (chhoddahu) forsake praising (naam–u) virtues of (raam) God and (leyhu ubaarey) save your (jeeo = soul) life.

(Kahai) says Prahlad: (Sunhu) listen (meyri) my (maaey) mother; I cannot (chhodda) forsake Naam of the Almighty; commitment to it has (guru) the guru has (deeaa bujhaaey = given understanding) created (gur-i) by the guru. 2.

Prahlaad’s teachers Sandda, Marka and (sabh-i) all others (jaaey) went and (pukaarey = entreated) complained to the King: Prahlaad is (aap-i) himself (viggrriaa) spoilt and is (vigaarrey) spoiling (sabh-i) all (chaattrrey) students.

(Mantr-u) a plan was (pakkaaiaa) decided (mah-i) in (sabhaa) meeting of (dustt) the evil demon – to kill Prahlaad. But (raghuraaiaa – metaphor for) God (hoey) was (raakhaa) the protector (ka) of Prahlad. 3.

(Kar-i) with (kharrag-u) dagger (haath-i) in hand, Harnakhas (dhaaia) rushed in (at-i) great (ahankaar-i) vanity; and said; show me (kahaa) where is (teyra) your (har-i) God who can (laey ubaar-i) save (tudh-u) you.

(Mah-i) in (khin) a moment god (upaar-i) burst (thamhh) a pillar and (niksiaa) came out in (bhaiaan) a dreadful (roop-u) form – of man-lion. And (bidaaria) destroyed/killed Harnakhas (nakhi) with nails and (leeaa ubaar-i) saved Prahlad. 4.

(Jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty (savaarey) accomplishes (kaaraj) tasks/purposes (key) of (sant janaa = saintly persons) the devotees; IT (udhaarey) saved (ikeeh) twenty one (kul) lineages of (jan = servant) devotee Prahlad.

The devotee (maarey = kills) dissolves (bikh-u) vice of (haumai) ego (sabad-i = with word) with guidance (kai) of (gur) the guru; practice (naam-i) of Naam of (raam) God (nistaarey) saves (sant) the seekers, says third Nanak. 5. 1. 20.

Bẖairo mėhlā 3.  Āpe ḏaiṯ lā▫e ḏiṯe sanṯ janā ka▫o āpe rākẖā so▫ī. Jo ṯerī saḏā sarṇā▫ī ṯin man ḏukẖ na ho▫ī. ||1||

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Bhairau. The Almighty (aapey) IT-self (laaey ditey) puts (dait = demons) evil persons (kau) after (sant janaa = saintly people) the saints, and (soi = that) IT is (aapey) IT-self also their (raakha) protector, i.e. this is the Divine way to destroy evil.

O Almighty, (jo) those who place themselves in (teyri) Your (sarnaaee) care and obedience, do not (hoi) have (man-i = of the mind) mental (dukh-u) agony – because they do not commit vices and hence are sure of Divine protection ultimately. 1.

Jug jug bẖagṯā kī rakẖ▫ḏā ā▫i▫ā.  Ḏaiṯ puṯar parahlāḏ gā▫iṯarī ṯarpaṇ kicẖẖū na jāṇai sabḏe mel milā▫i▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

The Almighty (rakhdaa aaiaa) has been protecting honour (ki) of (bhagta) the devotee – those with faith – (jug-i jug-i) through the ages.

Prahlaad (putr-u) the son of (dait) the demon king Harnakhas did not (jaanai) know (kichhoo) any mantras like the Gayatri or rituals like (tarpan) offering water to the sun, but (milaaiaa) was connected with God (sabdey) through the word, i.e. by obeying Divine commands received within. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

An▫ḏin bẖagaṯ karahi ḏin rāṯī ḏubiḏẖā sabḏe kẖo▫ī.  Saḏā nirmal hai jo sacẖ rāṯe sacẖ vasi▫ā man so▫ī. ||2||

A devotee is (andin-u = everyday) ever (karah-i = practices, bhagat-i = devotion) in obedience to God (din) day and (raati) night and (khoi = loses) gives up (dubidhaa = duality) other ideas (sabdey) by obeying the word/commands of the Almighty.

Those (jo) who are (raatey) imbued with love (sach-i) of the Eternal (hai) are (sadaa) ever (nirmal = clean) free of vices as (soi = that) the One (sach-u) Eternal Almighty (vasiaa) abides (man-i) in their minds. 2.

Mūrakẖ ḏubiḏẖā paṛėh mūl na pacẖẖāṇėh birthā janam gavā▫i▫ā.  Sanṯ janā kī ninḏā karahi ḏusat ḏaiṯ cẖiṛā▫i▫ā. ||3||

(Moorakh) fools (parrah-i) read the scriptures but only know (dubidha = duality) rituals and worships from them but do not (pachhaanah-i = recognize) understand – remain unaware of – (mool-u = root) the essence of the scriptures and (gavaaiaa = lose) waste (janam-u) human birth (birtha) in vain.

Evil persons (karah-i = did, ninda = slander) complained (ki) of/agaist (sant janaa = saints) the saints complained against Prahlad – to (chirraaiaa) provoke (dustt-u) the evil (dait-u) demon – Prahlad’s father Harnakhas, who threatened Prahlad with death. 3.

Parahlāḏ ḏubiḏẖā na paṛai har nām na cẖẖodai darai na kisai ḏā darā▫i▫ā.  Sanṯ janā kā har jī▫o rākẖā ḏaiṯai kāl neṛā ā▫i▫ā. ||4||

But Prahlad did not (parrai) put himself (dubidha) in duality – other ideas to start worshipping his father as demanded by him -, and (chhoddai) leave/stop (naam-u) praising virtues of (har-i) the Almighty; he was not (ddarai) frightened by (kisai) any (ddaraaiaa) threats.

(Jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty is (raakha) the protector (ka) of (sant janaa) the saints; (kaal-u) death (daitai) of the demon (aaiaa = came) was (neyrrai) near, i.e. time of his death had arrived, that he decided to harm the devotee Prahlad. 4.

The Almighty (aapey) IT-self (raakhai) protects (aapni = own) IT’s (paij) honor – by protecting – and (dey-i) giving (vaddiaaee) glory (bhagtaa-n) to the devotees – like Prahlad is looked at with respect even now.

IT (bidaariaa) destroyed Harnakhas (nakhi) with the nails – taking the form of man-lion; (andhai) the demon was blinded with vanity and did not (paai = obtained) have (khabar-i = news) awareness of (dar) Divine court, i.e. consequences of cruel deeds did not come to his mind. 5. 11. 21.
