Rāg malār mėhlā 5 cẖa▫upḏe gẖar 1   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar, (chaupadey) of four stanzas each, (ghar-u 1) to be sung to the first beat.    Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance. (Rahaau) Dwell on this and reflect.

Ki▫ā ṯū socẖėh ki▫ā ṯū cẖiṯvahi ki▫ā ṯūʼn karahi upā▫e.  Ŧā ka▫o kahhu parvāh kāhū kī jih gopāl sahā▫e. ||1||

O human being, (kiaa) what are (too) you (sochah-i) thinking about, what (chitvah-i = bring to mind) what plans are yu making and what (upaaey) measures (karah-i) taking, i.e. what is worrying you?

(Kahahu) tell me, (kaahoo = what, ki = of) what (parvaah = care) worry does (kaau = to, ta = that) that person have to whom (gopaal = nurturer of the world) the Almighty is (sahaaey) helpful, i.e. place yourself in care and obedience of the Almighty and forget all worries. 1.

Barsai megẖ sakẖī gẖar pāhun ā▫e.  Mohi ḏīn kirpā niḏẖ ṯẖākur nav niḏẖ nām samā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

The soul-wife says: O (sakhi = girlfriend) my friends: (Megh-u = cloud, barsai = is dropping rain) it is raining and (paahun = guest) my beloved husband (aaey) has come home, i.e. I am enjoying the comfort/peace with God in mind.

I (deen = poor, lowly) have no virtues, but (tthaakur = Master) the Almighty (nidh-i) the treasure-house of (kripa) kindness has enabled me to (samaaey) be absorbed in, i.e. live by, (nav nidh-i = nine treasures) the valuable (naam-i) Naam, i.e. living by God’s directions. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

Anik parkār bẖojan baho kī▫e baho binjan mistā▫e.  Karī pāksāl socẖ paviṯarā huṇ lāvhu bẖog har rā▫e. ||2||

I have (keeay) made (bahu) plenty of (bhojan) food preparations of (anik) many (prakaar) types and many (misttaaey) sweet (binjan) food dishes.

I prepared these after (kari) making (paaksaal) the kitchen (soch) clean and (pavitra) consecrate, please (laavahu bhog-u = put to mouth) eat it, o (raaey = kind) Sovereign (har-i) Almighty. 2.

Message: I bathed my body clean and have single-minded longing for You; please come in to my mind, i.e. give my company – reveal within, o Almighty. 2.

Ḏusat biḏāre sājan rahse ihi manḏir gẖar apnā▫e. Ja▫o garihi lāl rangī▫o ā▫i▫ā ṯa▫o mai sabẖ sukẖ pā▫e. ||3||

Ever since I (bidaarey) drove out (dustt) evil thoughts, (saajan = friends) good thoughts (rahsaaey) have blossomed, since then the Almighty (apanaaey = made own) patronized (ih-i) this (mandar, ghar = house) mind.

(Jau) as the (laal-u) beloved (rangeeo/rangeela = fun loving) playful master (aaiaa) came, (tau) since then I (paaey) have obtained (sabh-i) all (sukh) comforts/peace. 3.

Sanṯ sabẖā ot gur pūre ḏẖur masṯak lekẖ likẖā▫e.  Jan Nānak kanṯ rangīlā pā▫i▫ā fir ḏūkẖ na lāgai ā▫e. ||4||1||

With (leykh-u = writing) it being so (likhaaey) written (dhur-i = from source) by the Almighty (mastak-i = on forehead) in destiny, I received (ott) protection/guidance in (sabha = assembly) congregation of (poorey) the perfect (gur) guru; I (paaiaa) found (rangeelaa = playful) joy-giving (kant-u = spouse) the Almighty-husband within, says (jan) humble fifth Nanak. 4. 1.

Malār mėhlā 5.  Kẖīr aḏẖār bārik jab hoṯā bin kẖīrai rahan na jā▫ī.  Sār samĥāl māṯā mukẖ nīrai ṯab oh ṯaripaṯ agẖā▫ī. ||1||

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: (Jab) when (baarik = child) the baby (hota) is (adhaar-i = support of) dependent only on (kheer) milk, it (na jaaee) cannot (rahan-u) remain/live (bin-u) without (kheerai) milk.

(Maataa) the mother (samhaal-i = keeps in mind) is aware of its (saar-i) state/condition – as to when it needs to be fed and – (neerai) puts her teat (mukh-i) in its mouth and (tab) then (oh-u = that) the baby (tripat-i aghaaee = satiated) satisfied – similarly God helps one who places the self in Divine care and obedience. 1.

Ham bārik piṯā parabẖ ḏāṯā.  Bẖūlėh bārik anik lakẖ barī▫ā an ṯẖa▫ur nāhī jah jāṯā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Ham) we creatures are (baarik) children and (prabh-u) the Almighty is (daataa = giver) the caring (pitaa) father. (Baarik) a child may (bhoolah-i = makes mistakes) transgress (anik) many (lakh) lakhs of – countless – (bareeaa) times – but does not go anywhere; as there is (naahi) no (tthaur) place where it can (jaata) go for help, similarly we may make mistakes, o Almighty, but are still Yours. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Cẖancẖal maṯ bārik bapure kī sarap agan kar melai.  Māṯā piṯā kanṯẖ lā▫e rākẖai anaḏ sahj ṯab kẖelai. ||2||

It is (mat-i) nature of (bapurey) the helpless (baarik) child to be (chanchal = moving) carelessly playful; it (meylai = joins) puts its (kar) hand on (sarap) a snake and (agan-i) in fire.

But (maataa) the mother and (pitaa) father (raakhai) keeps it (laaey = touching, kantth-i = with throat) in embrace/protected and it (kheylai) plays (sahj-i) naturally with (anad/anand) joy – without harm. Similarly the creatures tend to be tempted by vices but God gives them the sense – gives them realization – and they avoid vices. 2.

Nav niḏẖ nām niḏẖān garihi ṯerai man bāʼncẖẖai so laisī. ||3||

O (meyrey) my (suaami) Master, one (ka = of, jis = who) whose (pitaa) father (too) You are, i.e. one who accepts and obeys You, (tis-u) that (baarik) child has (kaisi = what?) no (bhookh) hunger, i.e. lacks nothing.

(Nidhaan-u) the treasure of (nav nidh-i = nine treasures) the wealth of awareness of (naam-u) Naam or Divine virtues and commands is availably in (teyrai) Your (grih-i) house, o Almighty, i.e. everything is achieved by leading life by Naam – Divine commands; one who (baanchhai) seeks, motivated from within, (so) that person (laisi = shall take) receives that awareness. 3.

Piṯā kirpāl āgi▫ā ih ḏīnī bārik mukẖ māʼngai so ḏenā.  Nānak bārik ḏaras parabẖ cẖāhai mohi hirḏai basėh niṯ cẖarnā. ||4||2||

(Kripaal-i) the kind Almighty (pitaa) father has (deeni) given (ih) this (aagiaa) direction; (deyna) give (so = that) whatever the obedient (baarik) child (maangai) asks, i.e. God has made the Divine law that one who follows Naam – rules of life – achieves everything.

This (baarik-u = child) seeker (chaahai) wishes for (daras-u) vision; may (charna) feet of (har-i) the Almighty (nit) ever (basah-i) abide in (moh-i) my (hirdai) mind, i.e. I live by – awareness of Divine virtues and commands, says fifth Nanak. 4. 2.

Malār mėhlā 5.  Sagal biḏẖī jur āhar kari▫ā ṯaji▫o sagal anḏesā.  Kāraj sagal arāmbẖi▫o gẖar kā ṯẖākur kā bẖārosā. ||1||

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: With the longing to find God within, I (jur-i) gathered (sagal) all (bidhi) things, i.e. thought of what was wrong and (kariaa) made (aahar-u) efforts to transform the self, (tajio) giving up (sagal) all (andeysa) worries – about whether I would find God.

I (arambhio) commenced (sagal = all) the all round (kaaraj-u) task of cleansing (ghar = house) the mind (ka) of other ideas with (bhaarosa) faith in (tthakur) the Master. 1.

Sunī▫ai bājai bāj suhāvī.  Bẖor bẖa▫i▫ā mai pari▫a mukẖ pekẖe garihi mangal suhlāvī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Suhaavi) the pleasing (baaj) playing (baajai) of musical instruments – the celestial music – (suneeai) is heard, when (bhor-u = dawn/morning, bhaiaa = happens/comes) the mind is enlightened; (peykhey) seeing (mukh-i) face of (pria) the Beloved, (mai) I am filled with (mangal) joy (grih-i) in the house/mind. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Manū▫ā lā▫e savāre thānāʼn pūcẖẖa▫o sanṯā jā▫e.  Kẖojaṯ kẖojaṯ mai pāhun mili▫o bẖagaṯ kara▫o niv pā▫e. ||2||

I (jaaey) went and (poochhau) asked (santa = saints) the devotees, and as advised, I (laaey) applied my (manooaa) mind to (savaarey = transform) cleanse (thaa-n-naa = places) my innerself of other ideas and looked within.

(Khojat khojat) while searching, mai) I found within myself, (paahun = guest) the Almighty who seemed to have gone out earlier – I became aware of Naam which I had forgotten; and (niv-i = bowing, paaey = to feet) respectfully (karau) practice (bhagat-i) devotion, i.e. am in obedience of the Almighty. 2.

Jab pari▫a ā▫e base garihi āsan ṯab ham mangal gā▫i▫ā.  Mīṯ sājan mere bẖa▫e suhele parabẖ pūrā gurū milā▫i▫ā. ||3||

(Jab) when (pria) the Beloved (aaey) came (basey) to live/sit (aasan-i) on the seat of (grih-i = house) the mind, i.e. revealed presence within, since (tab) then (ham) I (gaaiaa) sing (mangal-u) the song of joy, i.e. am filled with joy since then.

(Meyrey) my (meet, saajan) friends (bhaey) are (suheley = comfortable) happy, i.e. everyone around is happy to see, that (poora) the perfect guru has (milaaiaa = caused to meet) led me to (prabh-u) the Almighty within. 3.

Sakẖī sahelī bẖa▫e ananḏā gur kāraj hamre pūre.  Kaho Nānak var mili▫ā sukẖ▫ḏāṯa cẖẖod na jā▫ī ḏūre. ||4||3||

My (sakhi saheyli) companions and friends (bhaey) are (ananda) happy that (gur-i) the guru has (poorey) fulfilled my (kaaraj = objective) wish.

I have (miliaa) got the Almighty (sukdaataa) giver of comfort/peace as (var-u) the spouse who shall not (jaaee = go, doorey = far/away) never leave me, (kahu) says fifth Nanak – the seeker soul-wife. 4. 3.

Malār mėhlā 5.  Rāj ṯe kīt kīt ṯe surpaṯ kar ḏokẖ jaṯẖar ka▫o bẖarṯe. Kirpā niḏẖ cẖẖod ān ka▫o pūjėh āṯam gẖāṯī harṯe. ||1||

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: (Tey) from (raaj) kings to (keett = worms) the lowly, from the lowly to (surpat-i) the king of gods – Indra; all of them (kar-i) commit (dokh = faults) transgressions to (bhartey) fill their (jatthar kau) bellies, i.e. for material gains.

They (chhodd-i) forsake the Almighty (nidh-i) the treasure-house of (kripa) kindness and (poojah-i) worship (aan kau) others; they (aatam ghaati) commit suicide – harm themselves – as they (hartey) drive out Naam or Divine virtues and commands from their minds. 1.

Har bisraṯ ṯe ḏukẖ ḏukẖ marṯe. Anik bār bẖarmėh baho jonī tek na kāhū ḏẖarṯe. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Those who (bisrat) forget God, (tey) they (dukh-i dukh-i) remain in distress and (martey = die) perish that way.

They (bhramah-i = wander) go through (bahu) numerous (joni) life forms (anik) many (baar) times, but (na kaaoo = not any) never (dhartey) take support of God. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

||2||

Those who (tiaag-i) forsake (suaami) the Master and (chitvat) think of (aan kau) others, (tey) they are (moorr mugadh) foolish (khar) asses, i.e. they never learn.

(Naav) a boat of (kaagar) paper (kat = when) can never (langhaavah-i) ferry one across (saagar) the ocean; they (kartey) make (britha = empty, kathat = talk) false claims that they (tartey = swim) have got across the world-ocean and found God. 2.

(Siv) Shiva, (biranch) Brahma, (asur) demons and (sur) gods; (jeytey = as many) all of them (jartey/jaltey) burn (mah-i) in (agan-i) the fire of (kaal) death, i.e. suffer for their transgressions.

O (prabh) Almighty (kartey) Creator, I have placed myself (saran-i = sanctuary) in care and obedience (ki) of (kamlan = lotus, charan = feet) you, (tumh) You please do not (ddaarhu) send me away, supplicates fifth Nanak – on behalf of the devotees. 3. 4.

Rāg malār mėhlā 5 ḏupḏe gẖar 1   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar, (dupadey) of two stanzas each, (ghar-u 1) to be sung to the first beat.    Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

I love (oey) those who (tiaagi) have given up attachments to the world-play and (bairaagi = yearning) love/obey (prabh) the Almighty Master (meyrey = my) of all. Similarly (hau) I (na sakau) cannot (rah-i) live (bin-u) without (tis-u = that) the Almighty even for (ik-u) one (khin) moment, such has (hamaari) my (preet-i) love (laagi) developed for God. 1.

(Rahaau) Dwell on this and reflect.

Un kai sang mohi parabẖ cẖiṯ āvai sanṯ parsāḏ mohi jāgī. Sun upḏes bẖa▫e man nirmal gun gā▫e rang rāʼngī. ||1||

(Prabh-u) the Almighty (aavai) comes to (moh-i) my (chit-i) mind in (un kai) their (sang-i) company; (moh-i) my inner-self has been (jaagi = awakened) enlightened – by giving up other ideas – (prasaad-i = with grace) with guidance of (sant) the saints.

(Man) the mind (bhaey) is (nirmal) purified (sun-i) listening to their (updeys-u) counsel; and (raa’ngi) imbued with (rang) love of God (gaaey = sing) praises (gun) Divine virtues. 1.

It is (dey-i) by giving (ihu) this (man-u) mind, i.e. by giving up ego, that (sant) the saints (keeay) are made (meetaa) friends and followd; they (bhaey) are (kripal) kind to guide those (baddbhaagee-n) who have good fortune.

I (paaiaa) experience such (mahaa) great (sukh-u) peace since I (paagi) received (rayn-u) dust feet of the saints, that I (na saakau) cannot (baran-i) be describe, says fifth Nanak. 2. 1. 5.

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: The young soul-woman says: O (maaee) mother, (deyhu milaaee) cause me to meet, i.e. unite me, with (preetam-u) the beloved Almighty-spouse. My (sakhi saheyli) friends in (jih) whose (ghar-i) house (laal-u) the Beloved (basaa)ee lives, (sooti) sleep (sukh = comfort, bhar-i = filled with) in peace, i.e. those who have God in mind are at peace. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

(Moh-i) I am (avgan) devoid of virtues, (prabh-u) the Almighty is (sadaa) ever (daiaala) kind; (kiaa) what (chaturaaee = cleverness) virtues (moh-i) I (nirgun) a virtueless one have to please the Almighty.

But I (karau = make do, braabar-i = equal) try to immitate those who are (raatee-n) imbued (sang-i) with love of (pria) the Beloved; (ih) this (ddheetthaaee) shamless (ki = of) is caused by (haumai = ego) feeling of misplaced self-importance. 1.

When I (bhaee) became (nimaani = meek) humble and (taaki) looked to (ik) the lone (saran-i) sanctuary of (purakh) great (satigur) true guru, (sukhdaaee = giver of comfort) source of solace.

The guru (kaattiaa = cut) rid me of (sabh-u) all (meyra) my (dukh-u = pain) pangs – of being without the Beloved – and now (rain-i) the night, i.e. life (bihaaee) passes (sukh-i) in peace, says the devotee fifth Nanak. 2. 2. 6.

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raag Malaar: O (ji) revered (megh = cloud) rain (baras-u) drop, do not (laau = spend) take (til-u = sesame) a bit of (bilam) time/ quickly – O Almighty, please reveal Yourself in my mind soon and fulfil my yearning.

O (piaarey) beloved Almighty, (baras = drop) come, be (sadhaarey) the support (manah-i) of the mind so that it (hoey) is (sadaa) ever (anad-u/anand) happy; (man-i) the mind (chaau) eagerly looks forward to Your coming. 1.
