ਰਾਗੁ ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਘਰੁ ੩     ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Rāg malār mėhlā 5 paṛ▫ṯāl gẖar 3   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar, (parrtaal) with variation of rhythm, (ghar-u 3) to be sung to the third beat.    Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

ਗੁਰ ਮਨਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਦਇਆਰ ਸਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਕੀਆ ॥ ਕੀਨੋ ਰੀ ਸਗਲ ਸੀਂਗਾਰ ॥ ਤਜਿਓ ਰੀ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥ ਧਾਵਤੋ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਥੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gur manār pari▫a ḏa▫i▫ār si▫o rang kī▫ā.  Kīno rī sagal sīʼngār.  Ŧaji▫o rī sagal bikār.  Ḏẖāvṯo asthir thī▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

The soul-wife  who (manaar-i = propitiates) obeys instructions of (gur) the guru, finds and (keeaa) makes (rang-u) merry, i.e. enjoys the bliss of (sang-i) company of (daiaar/daiaal) kind (pria) Almighty-husband, the woman is deemed to (keeno) make (sagal) all (see’ngaar) adornment/makeup – to please her husband. (Ri) o girl-friends by (tajio) by giving up (sagal) all (bikaar) vices; the (dhaavto = running) unsteady mind (theeaa) becomes (asthir-u) steady – does not succumb to temptations and remains focused on God within. 1.

ਐਸੇ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਧਨ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ॥ ਬਾਜੇ ਬਜਹਿ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਅਨਾਹਦ ਕੋਕਿਲ ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਮਧੁਰ ਬੈਨ ਅਤਿ ਸੁਹੀਆ ॥੧॥

Aise re man pā▫e kai āp gavā▫e kai kar sāḏẖan si▫o sang.  Bāje bajėh mariḏang anāhaḏ kokil rī rām nām bolai maḏẖur bain aṯ suhī▫ā. ||1||

 

(Paaey kai) obtaining (aisey) such a – stable – state of (man) mind – as above, (gavaaey kai = losing) giving up (aap-u = self) ego – not acting by self-will – (kar-i) make (sang-i) company (sio) with (saadhan) the saints – true seekers.

(Baajey) musical instruments like (mridang) the drums, i.e. celestial music, (bajah-i) play (anaahad) incessantly within; (kokil = a bird) every bird (bolai) utters (naam) virtues of (raam) the Almighty (madur) sweet (bain) words/sound which is (at-i) very (suheeaa/suhaavna) pleasant, i.e. the whole creation is singing glories of the Almighty. 1.

 

ਐਸੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੀ ਸੋਭ ਅਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਅਮੋਘ ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੰਤ ਬਨੇ ॥ ਭਵ ਉਤਾਰ ਨਾਮ ਭਨੇ ॥ ਰਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਮਾਲ ॥

Aisī ṯere ḏarsan kī sobẖ aṯ apār pari▫a amogẖ ṯaise hī sang sanṯ bane. Bẖav uṯār nām bẖane.  Ram rām rām māl.

 

(Sobh) the glory of (teyrey) Your (darsan) vision, i.e. awareness of Divine virtues and commands, is (aisi) so (at-i) very (apaar = infinite) great; it is (amogh) fruitful in freeing from vices – o (pria) Beloved; (taisey hi) similarly (sang-i) company of (sant) the saints (baney) becomes – is pleasant and valuable.

(Bhaney = utters) remembrance and practice of Naam (utaar = lands) ferries across (bhav/bhavjal) world-ocean. O human being, turn (maal) the rosary, remember (raam raam raam) the Almighty – three ways – in thought, word and deed.

ਮਨਿ ਫੇਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੰਗੀਆ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਥੀਆ ॥੨॥੧॥੨੩॥

Man ferṯe har sang sangī▫ā.  Jan Nānak pari▫o parīṯam thī▫ā. ||2||1||23||

 

(Sangeeaa) companions – congregation of seekers of (har-i) the Almighty together (pheyrtey) turn the rosary, i.e. remember and praise the Almighty (sang-i) together. This is how (priu) the Almighty husband (theeaa) becomes (preetam-u) Beloved, i.e. one develops love for God, says (jan) humble fifth Nanak. 2. 1. 23.

Malār mėhlā 5.  Man gẖanai bẖarmai banai.  Umak ṯaras cẖālai.  Parabẖ milbe kī cẖāh. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: My (Man-u) mind (bhramai) is lost in (ghanai) the thick (banai) jungle, i.e. in the web of temptations, while it (chaalai) moves, (umak-i) yearning for and (taras-i) missing God; with (chaah) wish (ki) of (milbey) meeting (prabh) the Almighty. 1.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਨ ਮਾਈ ਮੋਹਿ ਆਈ ਕਹੰਉ ਬੇਦਨ ਕਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

Ŧarai gun mā▫ī mohi ā▫ī kahaʼn▫o beḏan kāhi. ||1||

 

(Maaee/maaiaa) the world-play of (trai) three (gun) attributes of ego action (aaee = came) is ever present (moh-i) to entice – to mislead; (kaah-i) to whom I should (kah’nau = say) tell my (beydan) pain – ask for help? 1.

 

ਆਨ ਉਪਾਵ ਸਗਰ ਕੀਏ ਨਹਿ ਦੂਖ ਸਾਕਹਿ ਲਾਹਿ ॥ ਭਜੁ ਸਰਨਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਮਿਲੁ ਗੁਨ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹਿ ਗਾਹਿ ॥੨॥੨॥੨੪॥

Ān upāv sagar kī▫e nėh ḏūkẖ sākėh lāhi.  Bẖaj saran sāḏẖū nānkā mil gun gobinḏėh gāhi. ||2||2||24||

 

I (keeay) made (sagar/sagal) all (aan) other (upaav) efforts/adopted other measures, but they (na saakah-i) could not (laah-i) remove (dookh) the pain – of separation from the Almighty. Then God motivated, saying, o (naanka) fifth Nanak – the seeker –, (bhaj-u = run) go and be in (saran-i = sanctuary) care and obedience of (saadhoo) the guru; who taught me to (mil-u = meet) join the holy congregation and (gaah-i = sing) praise and learn to obey (gun) virtues of the Almighty (gobindah-i) Master of the universe – and it has worked. 2. 2. 24.

Malār mėhlā 5.  Pari▫a kī sobẖ suhāvanī nīkī. Hāhā hūhū ganḏẖarab apsarā anand mangal ras gāvnī nīkī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: (Sobh = glorification) praising and emulating virtues of (pria) the Beloved Almighty is (neeki) good/useful and (suhaavni) pleasant. The metaphoric (gandharb) singers named Ha Ha Hoo Hoo and (apsaraa) fairies in heaven all (gaavni) sing (anand) the blissful (neeki = good) beautiful, (ras) sweet songs glorifying the Almighty, with (mangal) joy. 1.

ਧੁਨਿਤ ਲਲਿਤ ਗੁਨਗ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਰੂਪ ਦਿਖਾਵਨੀ ਨੀਕੀ ॥੧॥

Ḏẖuniṯ laliṯ gun▫ga▫y anik bẖāʼnṯ baho biḏẖ rūp ḏikẖāvanī nīkī. ||1||

 

They sing God’s (gunagya) virtues of (anik) numerous (bhaant-i) types (dikhaavni) showing (neeki = good) the great (roop = forms) manifestations in (bahu) many (bidh-i) ways. 1.

 

ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਥਲ ਜਲ ਭਵਨ ਭਰਪੁਰਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਲਾਲਨ ਛਾਵਨੀ ਨੀਕੀ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਮਈਆ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਨੀਕੀ ॥੨॥੩॥੨੫॥

Gir ṯar thal jal bẖavan bẖarpur gẖat gẖat lālan cẖẖāvnī nīkī.  Sāḏẖsang rām▫ī▫ā ras pā▫i▫o Nānak jā kai bẖāvnī nīkī. ||2||3||25||

 

God (bharpur-i) pervades in (bhavan) regions of (gir-i) mountains, (tar = trees) forests, (thal) land, (jal) water and (ghatt-i ghattt-i) in all creatures; they are IT’s (neeki) beautiful (chhaavni) abode of (laalan) the beloved Almighty.

One (ja kai) who has (neeki = good) strong (bhaavni) longing (paaio) obtains (ras-u) the taste/awareness of the Omnipresence of (ramaeeaa) the all-pervasive Almighty (saadhsang-i) in holy congregation, says fifth Nanak. 2. 3. 25.

Malār mėhlā 5.  Gur parīṯ pi▫āre cẖaran kamal riḏ anṯar ḏẖāre. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: (Preet-i = love) with loving guidance of (piaarey) the dear (gur) guru, I (dhaarey) keep (kamal = lotus, charan = feet) commands of the Almighty (antar-i) in (rid) mind – and hence keep away from vices. 1.

ਦਰਸੁ ਸਫਲਿਓ ਦਰਸੁ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਗਏ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਗਏ ॥ ਮਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਉਜੀਆਰੇ ॥੧॥

Ḏaras safli▫o ḏaras pekẖi▫o ga▫e kilbikẖ ga▫e.  Man nirmal ujī▫āre. ||1||

 

(Peykhio) seeing (daras = sight) the example of the guru is (saphlio) fruitful; with it one obtains (daras-u) vision of the Almighty, (kilbikh) sins (gaey) leave; (man) the mind is (nirmal) cleansed and (ujeeaarey) enlightened. 1.

 

ਬਿਸਮ ਬਿਸਮੈ ਬਿਸਮ ਭਈ ॥ ਅਘ ਕੋਟਿ ਹਰਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਲਈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਮਸਤਕੁ ਡਾਰਿ ਪਹੀ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕ ਤੂੰਹੀ ਏਕ ਤੁਹੀ ॥ ਭਗਤ ਟੇਕ ਤੁਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥੨॥੪॥੨੬॥

Bisam bismai bisam bẖa▫ī.  Agẖ kot harṯe nām la▫ī. Gur cẖaran masṯak dār pahī.  Parabẖ ek ṯūʼnhī ek ṯuhī.  Bẖagaṯ tek ṯuhāre.  Jan Nānak saran ḏu▫āre. ||2||4||26||

 

 (Bisam) wonderstruck (bismai) with the wondrous plays of the Almighty, I (bhaee) become (bisam) ecstatic; (kott-i) crores/multitudes of my (agh) vices have been (hartey) driven away (laee = taking) with awareness of (naam) Divine virtues and commands.

Since I (ddaar-i) placed my (mastak-u) forehead (pahi) on (charan) feet of (gur) the guru, i.e. submitted to the guru’s instructions, I learnt that (toohi) You alone are present to help here and (eyk toohi) You alone can help in the hereafter. You are (tteyk = support) the mainstay of (tuhaarey) Your (bhagat) devotees; I have come to Your (duaarey) gate/refuge to place myself in Your (saran-i) care and obedience, says humble fifth Nanak – the seeker. 2. 4. 26.

Malār mėhlā 5.  Baras saras āgi▫ā.  Hohi ānanḏ sagal bẖāg. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: When (baras-u) rain falls (saras-u = happily) profusely with God’s (aagiaa) orders, (sagal) all parts of land (hoh-i = happens) enjoy (aanand) bliss i.e. one obtains awareness of Naam with God’s grace, – keeps away from vices and is ever happy on all fronts. 1.

ਸੰਤ ਸੰਗੇ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਫੜੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਮੇਘ ਧਰ ਸੁਹਾਗ ॥੧॥

Sanṯ sange man parfaṛai mil megẖ ḏẖar suhāg. ||1||

 

The way (dhar/dharti) land (suhaag = fortunate) blossoms on (mil-i = meeting) receiving (meygh = clouds) rain, (man-u) mind (parpharrai) blossoms (sangey) in company of (sant) the saints, i.e. by keeping vices at bay. 1.

 

ਘਨਘੋਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮੋਰ ॥ ਚਿਤੁ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਓਰ ॥ ਐਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗੇ ਮਨ ਮੋਹ ॥ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਧੋਹ ॥ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਗਿਆ ॥੨॥੫॥੨੭॥

Gẖangẖor parīṯ mor.  Cẖiṯ cẖāṯrik būnḏ or.  Aiso har sange man moh.  Ŧi▫āg mā▫i▫ā ḏẖoh.  Mil sanṯ Nānak jāgi▫ā. ||2||5||27||

 

(Mor) the peacock (preet-i) loves – looks forward to – (ghanghor) cloud-thunder; (chit-u) mind of (chaatrik) the rain bird is (or) towards, i.e. yearns for (boond) the raindrop – and is happy when it falls in its mouth.

(Aiso) similarly my (man) mind bears (moh) attachment/love (sangey) with (har-i) the Almighty; (tiaag-i) forsaking/resisting (dhoh/dhroh = deceit) being enticed by (maaiaa) temptations in the world-play, my mind (jaagiaa = awake) alert to vices (mil-i = meeting) with guidance of (sant) the saints, says fifth Nanak. 2. 5. 27.

Malār mėhlā 5.  Gun gopāl gā▫o nīṯ.  Rām nām ḏẖār cẖīṯ. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: (Neet) ever (gaau = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of the Almighty (gupaal/gopaal = nurturer of the world) the Sustainor. (Dhaar-i) keep (naam) virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty in (cheet) mind. 1.

ਛੋਡਿ ਮਾਨੁ ਤਜਿ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂਆ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਏਕ ਰੰਗਿ ਮਿਟਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ਦੋਖ ਮੀਤ ॥੧॥

Cẖẖod mān ṯaj gumān mil sāḏẖū▫ā kai sang.  Har simar ek rang mit jāʼnhi ḏokẖ mīṯ. ||1||

 

(Chhodd-i = give up thoughts of status, (taj-i) forsake (gumaan-u) pride; (mil-i) meet with and in (sang-i) company (kai) of (saadhooaa) saints, i.e. join holy congregation; and –

(Simar-i) recall Naam – Divine virtues and commands in (eyk = one) single-mined (rang-i = love) attention; this is how (dokh) faults/vices (mitt-i jaa’nh-i) are erased from the mind. 1.

 

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ ॥ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਗਏ ਬਿਖੈ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾਂ ਕੈ ਚਰਨ ਲਾਗਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨੀਤ ॥੨॥੬॥੨੮॥

Pārbarahm bẖa▫e ḏa▫i▫āl.  Binas ga▫e bikẖai janjāl. Sāḏẖ janāʼn kai cẖaran lāg.  Nānak gāvai gobinḏ nīṯ. ||2||6||28||

 

When (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being (bhaey) is (daiaal) kind – to enable to live by Naam; then (janjaal) entanglements with/indulgence in (bikhai) vices (binas gaey = are destroyed) ends.

Then one (laag-i) attaches to (charan) feet of, i.e. follows example of (saadh janaa) the saints, and (neet) ever (gaavai = sings) praises and obeys (gobind) the Master of the world, says fifth Nanak. 2. 6. 28.

ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਘਨੁ ਗਰਜਤ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਰੂਪ ॥ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਸੁਖ ਚੈਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Malār mėhlā 5.  Gẖan garjaṯ gobinḏ rūp.  Gun gāvaṯ sukẖ cẖain. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: (Ghan) the clouds (garjat) thunder and drop rain; they are (roop = form) embodiment (gobind = master of the world) the Almighty, i.e. the way land blossoms with rain, God’s grace to impart awareness of IT’s virtues rejuvenates the mind. (Gaavat = singing) praising and emulating (gun) virtues of the Almighty brings (sukh) comfort and (chain) peace. 1.

ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਸਰਨ ਤਰਨ ਸਾਗਰ ਧੁਨਿ ਅਨਹਤਾ ਰਸ ਬੈਨ ॥੧॥

Har cẖaran saran ṯaran sāgar ḏẖun anhaṯā ras bain. ||1||

 

Placing the self in (saran) refuge of (charan) feet, i.e. submitting to Divine commands is (taran) the ship to take across the world (saagar) ocean; (anhataa) unstruck celestial (dhun-i) music with (ras) sweet (bain) words plays, i.e. one remains connected with God. 1.

 

ਪਥਿਕ ਪਿਆਸ ਚਿਤ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਆਤਮ ਜਲੁ ਲੈਨ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੈਨ ॥੨॥੭॥੨੯॥

Pathik pi▫ās cẖiṯ sarovar āṯam jal lain.  Har ḏaras parem jan Nānak kar kirpā parabẖ ḏain. ||2||7||29||

 

(Chit) the mind of (piaas) a thirsty (pathik) traveler heads for (sarovar) the pool water (lain) for taking (jal-u) water; similarly a seeker finds the guru to obtain (jal-u = water) awareness of Divine virtues and commands for (aatam) the soul.

That water is (daras) vision of (har-i) the Almighty; please (kar-i) show (kirpa) kindness to (dain) give, o (prabh) Master, supplicates fifth Nanak – the seeker. 2. 7. 29.

Malār mėhlā 5.  He gobinḏ he gopāl he ḏa▫i▫āl lāl. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of (mahla 5) the fifth Guru in Raga Malaar: (Hey) o (laal) beloved Almighty, You are (daiaal) the kind (gobind) Master of the world. 1.

ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਸਖੇ ਦੀਨ ਦਰਦ ਨਿਵਾਰ ॥੧॥

Parān nāth anāth sakẖe ḏīn ḏaraḏ nivār. ||1||

 

You are (naath) the Master of (praan) life – the Creator, (sakhey = companion) helper of (anaath = master-less) the hapless and (nivaar) deliverer of (deen) the poor from (darad) pain.

 

ਹੇ ਸਮ੍ਰਥ ਅਗਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਇਆ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

He samrath agam pūran mohi ma▫i▫ā ḏẖār. ||2||

 

O Almighty, You are (samrath) Omnipotent, (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (pooran) Omnipresent; You (dhaar-i) bestow (maia = kindness) grace everywhere. 2. 

 

ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰ ॥੩॥੮॥੩੦॥

Anḏẖ kūp mahā bẖa▫i▫ān Nānak pār uṯār. ||3||8||30||

 

The creatures are held back from You by (mahaa = great) the horrible (bhaiaan) frightening (andh) blind (koop) well, i.e. the creatures caught in strong temptations of the world and cannot reach You; please ferry them to (utaar = disembark) land them (paar-i) across – to reach You, supplicates fifth Nanak. 3. 8. 30.
