ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ਨਾਮੋ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 3. Nām amolak gurmukẖ pāvai Nāmo seve nām sahj samāvai Amriṯ nām rasnā niṯ gāvai Jis no kirpā kare so har ras pāvai ||1||

 

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Gaurri. Awareness of (naam-u) Naam/Divine commands is (amolak) priceless, one (paavai) obtains it (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance. S/he (seyvey = serves) obeys (naamo) Naam/Divine commands and remains (sahj-i) instinctively (smaavai) absorbed/conforms (naam-i) to Naam/Divine commands.

His/her (rasna) tongue (nit) ever (gaavai = sings) praises (amrit-u) the life-giving (naam-u) Divine commands, i.e. acknowledges that one does not fall prey vices with awareness of Naam. One (no) to (jis-u) whom the Almighty (karey) bestows (kripa) kindness, (so) that seeker (paavai) obtains (har-i) Divine (ras-u =taste) experience, – of freedom from temptations. 1.

 

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜਪਉ ਜਗਦੀਸਾ ॥ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਉ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਸੂਖਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
An▫ḏin hirḏai japa▫o jagḏīsā Gurmukẖ pāva▫o param paḏ sūkẖā ||1|| rahā▫o

 

(Andin-u = everyday) ever (japau) remember and obey (jagdeesa) the Master of the world (hirdai) from the heart. (Gurmukh-i) follow the guru and (paavau) obtain (param) the supreme (pad-u) state of (sookhaa) peace – freedom from vices. 1.

Dwell here and reflect.

 

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸੂਖੁ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦਾਸੁ ॥ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਮਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
Hirḏai sūkẖ bẖa▫i▫ā pargās Gurmukẖ gāvahi sacẖ guṇṯās Ḏāsan ḏās niṯ hovėh ḏās Garih kutamb mėh saḏā uḏās ||2||

 

When (hirdai) the mind (bhaiaa) gets (pargaas-u = light) awareness of Naam and complies, it experiences (sookh-u) peace. One (gaavah-i = sings) praises and emulates virtues of (sach-u) the Eternal Almighty (guntaas-u) the treasure of virtues (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance.

S/he (nit) ever (hovah-i) remains (daas) servant/follower (daasan-i) of servants/devotees of God. Being (mah-i) in (grih) the house with (kutta’mb) the family, s/he (sadaa) ever remains (udaas-u) unattached – so as not to forget the Creator. 2.

 

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋ ਹੋਈ ॥ਪਰਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
Jīvan mukaṯ gurmukẖ ko ho▫ī Param paḏārath pāvai so▫ī Ŧarai guṇ mete nirmal ho▫ī Sėhje sācẖ milai parabẖ so▫ī ||3||

 

(Ko) some rare person, who (gurmukh-i) follows the guru’s guidance (hoee) becomes (mukat-u) free from ego in (jeevan) life.
(Soee) such a person (paavai) receives (param) the supreme (padaarath-u) gift – of experiencing the Almighty within.

 S/he (meyttey = erases) removes the tendency to act by (train) the three (gun) attributes of ego. (Sooee) s/he (sahjey) intuitively (milai = meets) experiences (prabh-u) Almighty (saach-i) through truthful living by Naam. 3.

 

ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ਜਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
Moh kutamb si▫o parīṯ na ho▫e Jā hirḏai vasi▫ā sacẖ so▫e Gurmukẖ man beḏẖi▫ā asthir ho▫e Hukam pacẖẖāṇai būjẖai sacẖ so▫e ||4||

 

One does not (hoey) have (preet-i) affection and (moh) attachment (siau) with (kutt’mb) the family. (Ja) when (soey = that) the One (sach-u = truth) Eternal Almighty (vasiaa) abides (hirdai) in mind.

(Man-u) the mind of (gurmukh-i) the guru’s follower (beydhiaa = pierced) is imbued with Divine love and (hoey) becomes, (asthir-u) steady, i.e. does not look elsewhere. S/he (pachhaani) understands/complies with (hukam-u) Divine commands and (boojhai) recognizes (soey = that) the One (sach-u) Eternal within. 4.

 

ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ਤੁਝੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਗਾਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਇ ॥੫॥
Ŧūʼn karṯā mai avar na ko▫e Ŧujẖ sevī ṯujẖ ṯe paṯ ho▫e Kirpā karahi gāvā parabẖ so▫e Nām raṯan sabẖ jag mėh lo▫e ||5||

 

A Gurmukh addresses the Almighty thus: (Too’n) you are (karta) the Creator – from whom (mai) I receive everything -, there is (na koey = not any) none (avar-u) other. I (seyvi) obey (tujh-u) you; (pat-i) honor – fulfillment of wishes – (hoey) is obtained (tey) from (tujh) you.

When you (karah-i) bestow (kirpa) grace then I (gaava = sing) praise/emulate virtues of you (soey) the One (prab-u) Almighty. (Ratan-u) the jewel of awareness of (naam) Divine virtues and commands is (loey) the light/guide in (sabh) the whole (jag) world. 5.

 

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ਅੰਤਰੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ਸਹਜੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ॥ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਪੂਰੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੬॥
Gurmukẖ baṇī mīṯẖī lāgī Anṯar bigsai an▫ḏin liv lāgī Sėhje sacẖ mili▫ā parsādī Saṯgur pā▫i▫ā pūrai vadbẖāgī ||6||

 

(Gurmukh-i) the guru’s follower (laagi = finds, meetthee = sweet) loves to obey (baani = words) directions of the guru. His/he (antar-i) inner-self (bigsai) blossoms with (live) attention (andin-u = everyday) ever (laagi) fixed on Naam.

S/he (miliaa = meets) experiences (sach-u) the Almighty (parsaadi) with grace/guidance of the guru. (Sati guru) the true guru (paaiaa) is met with (poorai = perfect) good (bhaagi) fortune, i.e. one who yearns for the Almighty goes to the guru. 6.

 

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੁਖ ਨਾਸੁ ॥ਜਬ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਸੁ ॥

ਜਬ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਵਿਆ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੭॥
Ha▫umai mamṯā ḏurmaṯ ḏukẖ nās Jab hirḏai rām nām guṇṯās Gurmukẖ buḏẖ pargatī parabẖ jās

Jab hirḏai ravi▫ā cẖaraṇ nivās ||7||

 

(Dukh) pain – of separation from God caused by – (haumai) ego, (mamta) attachments and (durmat-i) evil thoughts are (naas-u) banished. (Jab) when (naam) virtues and commands of (raam) The Almighty, (guntaas-u) the treasure of virtues abides (hirdai) in mind

(Budh-i) intellect to praise (jaas-u) glory of (prabh) the Almighty (pragtti) manifests/develops (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance, i.e. one goes to the guru. (Jab) when (nivaas-u) abode of (charan) Divine feet/commands (raviaa) happens is kept (hirdai) in mind. 7.

 

ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੮॥੭॥
Jis nām ḏe▫e so▫ī jan pā▫e Gurmukẖ mele āp gavā▫e Hirḏai sācẖā nām vasā▫e Nānak sėhje sācẖ samā▫e ||8||7||

 

(Soee) only that (jan-u) person (paaey) obtains to (jis-u) whom the Almighty (dey-i = gives) imparts awareness of Naam – by leading to the guru. (Gurmukh-i) the guru’s teachings (meyley) unite with the Almighty, (gavaaey = losing) killing (aap-u) the self-importance/ego.

One who (vasaaey) keeps (saacha = true) the inescapable (naam-u) Divine commands (hirdai) in mind. Remains (sahjey) intuitively (samaaey = contained) absorbed (saach-i) in the Eternal, says third Nana. 8. 7.

Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 3. Man hī man savāri▫ā bẖai sahj subẖā▫e Sabaḏ man rangi▫ā liv lā▫e Nij gẖar vasi▫ā parabẖ kī rajā▫e ||1||

 

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Gaurri. (Man) the mind (hi) itself (savaariaa) transforms/purifies (man-u) the mind of vices by (sahj-i subhaaey) instinctively remaining in (bhai) awe and obedience to Naam, i.e. one does need to go elsewhere for peace.

(Man-u) the mind is (rangiaa) with imbued with love of the Almighty, (laaey) by paying (live) attention (sabad-i = on the word) to Divine commands.

One who is happy with (rajaaey) will (ki) of (prabh) the Almighty, (vasiaa) abides in (nij) own (ghar-i) home, i.e. the mind does not wander but keeps focus on Naam within. 1.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਜਾਇ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ਗੋਵਿਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Saṯgur sevi▫ai jā▫e abẖimān Goviḏ pā▫ī▫ai guṇī niḏẖān ||1|| rahā▫o

 

(Abhimaan-u) vanity (jaaey = goes) ends, one feels humble, (seyviai = serving) by following (sati guru) the true guru. This is how (govind-u = master of the world) the Almighty, (nidhaan-u) treasure/epitome (guni) of virtues, (paaeeai) is found. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell here and reflect.

 

ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਜਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਉ ਖਾਇ ॥ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਸਭ ਤੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
Man bairāgī jā sabaḏ bẖa▫o kẖā▫e Merā parabẖ nirmalā sabẖ ṯai rahi▫ā samā▫e Gur kirpā ṯe milai milā▫e ||2||

 

(Man-u) the mind (bairaagi) yearns for the Almighty when it (khaaey = eats, bhau = fear) submits (sabad-i = of the word) to Divine commands.

(Prabh-u) the Almighty Master (meyra = my) of all (nirmalaa = unstained) is without prejudice for persons or places, and (rahiaa samaaey) pervades (Tai) at (sabh) all places.

The Almighty (milai) is met when (milaaey) led (tey) with (kirpa) grace/guidance of (guru) the guru. 2.

 

ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਏ ॥ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੩॥
Har ḏāsan ko ḏās sukẖ pā▫e Merā har parabẖ in biḏẖ pā▫i▫ā jā▫e Har kirpā ṯe rām guṇ gā▫e ||3||

 

(Daas) the servant/follower (ko) of (daasan) servants/devotees of (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. one who humbly submits to Divine commands, (paaey) obtains (sukh-u) the comfort – of having found the Almighty.

(In) this is (bidh-i) how (har-i) the Almighty (prabh-u) Master (meyra = my) of all (jaaey) can be (paaiaa) found. One (gaaey = sings) praises/emulates (gun) virtues of (raam) the Almighty (tey) with (kirpa) grace of (har-i) the Almighty, when one shows the propensity. 3.

 

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਬਹੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਮੋਹ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥ਤਿਨ ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਿਨ

ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥੪॥
Ḏẖarig baho jīvaṇ jiṯ har nām na lagai pi▫ār Ḏẖarig sej sukẖālī kāmaṇ moh gubār Ŧin safal janam jin nām aḏẖār ||4||

 

(Bah-u = much) long (Jeevan-u) life in (jit-u) which does not (lagai) have (piaar-u) love/compliance (naam-i) of Naam/Divine commands, i.e. forgets/ignores the .Creator and Sustain or, is (dhrig-u) disgraceful.

(Sukhaali) comfortable (seyj) bed which cause to forget the Almighty, due to (gubaar-u = darkness) blindness caused by (moh) lure of (kaaman-i) the woman, is (dhrig-u) disgraceful.

(Janam-u) human birth of (tin) those, i.e. those who utilize the opportunity of human birth to learn to obey the Almighty, is (saphal-u) fruitful in uniting with God, (Jin) who have (naam-u) Divine commands as (adhaar-u) the mainstay/guide for life. 4.

 

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ਸੋਈ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੫॥
Ḏẖarig ḏẖarig garihu kutamb jiṯ har parīṯ na ho▫e So▫ī hamārā mīṯ jo har guṇ gāvai so▫e Har nām binā mai avar na ko▫e ||5||

 

(Dhrig-u dhrig-u) highly disgraceful is (grih-u) the home and (kuttamb-u) family, i.e. enjoying all the comforts, (jit-u) does not (hoey) have (preet-i) love/obedience of (har-i) the Almighty.

I would have (soee) that as (hamaaraa) my (meet-u) friend/companion (Jo) who (gaavai = sings) praises/emulates (gun) virtues of (soey = that) the One (har-i) Almighty.

(Mai) I have (na koey = not any) none (avar-u) else (binaa) except (naam) virtues and commands of the Almighty as mainstay. 5.

 

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਦੂਖੁ ਸਗਲ ਮਿਟਾਈ ॥ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੬॥
Saṯgur ṯe ham gaṯ paṯ pā▫ī Har nām ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā ḏūkẖ sagal mitā▫ī Saḏā anand har nām liv lā▫ī ||6||

 

(Ham) I (paaee) obtained (gat-i) freedom from temptations and (pat-i) honor of Divine experience, (tey) from (sati guru) the true guru. With his guidance I (dhiaaiaa = paid attention) obeyed (har-i) Divine (naam-u) commands, which (mittaaee) removed (sagal) all (dookh) faults in life.

One is (sadaa) ever in (anand-u) bliss when (live) focus is (laaee) fixed on obeying (naam-i) commands of (har-i) the Almighty. 6.

 

I (paai) obtained (gati) freedom from vices and (pati) honor by following (sat guru) the true guru thus: 
I followed the guru’s teachings and (dhiaaia) attentively recounted (har naam) Divine virtues – and tried to live by them – this helped (mitaaee) shed vices and the resultant (dookh) suffering.
Now (live laai)being absorbed in Divine virtues I experience (sadaa) eternal (anand) bliss. 6.

 

ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਮ ਕਉ ਸਰੀਰ ਸੁਧਿ ਭਈ ॥ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਸਭ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਈ ॥ਬਿਨਸੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਖਿਮਾ ਗਹਿ ਲਈ ॥੭॥
Gur mili▫ai ham ka▫o sarīr suḏẖ bẖa▫ī Ha▫umai ṯarisnā sabẖ agan bujẖ▫ī Binse kroḏẖ kẖimā gėh la▫ī ||7||

 

(Sudh-i) awareness of (sareer) the body, Naam/Divine commands within, (bhaee) came (kau) to me (miliai) on meeting/following (gur-i) the guru.

(Sabh) all (agan-i) fires of (haumai) ego and (trisna) craving/desires have been (bujhaee) quenched, i.e. I am at peace with focus on Naam.

(Krodh = anger) intolerance has been (bnisey) destroyed and (gah-i laee) I hold on to (khimaa) forgiveness/tolerance. 7.

 

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ॥ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਲੇਵੈ ॥ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵੈ ॥੮॥੮॥
Har āpe kirpā kare nām ḏevai Gurmukẖ raṯan ko virlā levai Nānak guṇ gāvai har alakẖ abẖevai ||8||8||

 

(Har-i) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self (karey) bestows (kripa) grace to lead to the guru, who (deyvai) imparts awareness of (naam-u) Divine commands/guide for life.

(Ko) some (virla) rare person (gurmukh-i) follows the guru to (paavai) obtains (ratan-u = jewel) the wealth – of awareness of Naam.

Third Nanak, (gaavai) sings/praises (gun) virtues of (alakh = without signs) the Formless and (abheyvai = of unknown mysteries) the unknown Almighty – with the guru’s guidance. 8. 8.

Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance Composition of the third Guru in Raga Gaurri, Raagini Bairagan.

 

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਮੁਹ ਫੇਰੇ ਤੇ ਵੇਮੁਖ ਬੁਰੇ ਦਿਸੰਨਿ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਨਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਵੇਲਾ ਨਾ ਲਹੰਨਿ ॥੧॥

Saṯgur ṯe jo muh fere ṯe vaimukẖ bure ḏisann An▫ḏin baḏẖe mārī▫an fir velā nā lahann ||1||

 

Those (Jo) who (pheyrey) turn their (muh) faces (tey) from/refuse to follow, (satiguru) the true guru, they transgress and (disa’nn-i) are seen (burey) bad, i.e. to commit vices.

(Andin-u = everyday) ever (badhaey = bound) in grip of vices, they (maareean-i) are beaten back – from union with God; they do not (lahan-i) get another (veyla) opportunity, i.e. this is possible only in human birth which is hard to get. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har har rākẖo kirpā ḏẖār   Saṯsangaṯ melā▫e parabẖ har hirḏai har guṇ sār||1|| rahā▫o

 

O Almighty, awareness of your commands is (har-i = dispels vices) purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating, please impartment that awareness and (kripa dhaar-i) kindly (raakhah-u) protect me from vices.

O (prabh) Almighty (prabh) Master, please (meylaaey = cause to meet) lead me to (satsangat-i) the holy congregation, so that I (saar-i) keep (har-i) Divine (gun) virtues (hardai) in mind. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell here and reflect.

 

ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵਦੇ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਇ ਚਲੰਨਿ ॥ ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨਿ ਜੀਵਤ ਮੁਏ ਰਹੰਨਿ ॥੨॥

Se bẖagaṯ har bẖāvḏe jo gurmukẖ bẖā▫e cẖalann Āp cẖẖod sevā karan jīvaṯ mu▫e rahanni ||2||

 

(Sey) those (bhagat) devotees (Jo) who (chala’nn-i = walk) conduct themselves (gurmukh-i) by the guru’s teachings (bhaavdey) are found agreeable by (har-i) the Almighty.

They (chhodd-i) forsake (aap-u) the self-importance, (karan-i = do, seyva = service) obey the guru and (raha’nn-i) remain (jeevat) living (muey) dead, i.e. give up ego. 2.

 

ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਰਾਣ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ॥ ਓਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

Jis ḏā pind parāṇ hai ṯis kī sir kār Oh ki▫o manhu visārī▫ai har rakẖī▫ai hirḏai ḏẖār ||3||

 

The Creator (jis da = whose) who has given (pindd-u) body and (praan) life, they are subject to (ti kai = of that) IT’s (kaar-i) writ (sir-i = on the head) applies to the creatures.

We (kiau = why?) should not (visaareeai) forget/ignore (oh-u) that (har-i) Creator’s orders, but (rakheeai) keep (dhaar-i) enshrined (hardai) in mind. 3.

 

ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥

Nām mili▫ai paṯ pā▫ī▫ai nām mani▫ai sukẖ ho▫e Saṯgur ṯe nām pā▫ī▫ai karam milai parabẖ so▫e ||4||

 

We (paaeeai) obtain (pat-i) in life and in the hereafter (miliai) by receiving awareness (naam-i) of Naam – because we then do not fall prey to vices; we (paaeeai) obtain (sukh-u) peace (ma’nniai) by obeying Naam/Divine commands.

Awareness of (naam-u) Naam (paaeeai) is obtained (tey) from (sati guru) the true guru, and (soey = that) the One (prabh) Almighty (milai) meets (karam-i) through deeds, i.e. obeying Naam. 4.

 

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਮੁਹੁ ਫੇਰੇ ਓਇ ਭ੍ਰਮਦੇ ਨਾ ਟਿਕੰਨਿ ॥ ਧਰਤਿ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਝਲਈ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਪਏ ਪਚੰਨਿ ॥੫॥

Saṯgur ṯe jo muhu fere o▫e bẖaramḏe nā tikann. Ḏẖaraṯ asmān na jẖal▫ī vicẖ vistā pa▫e pacẖann ||5||

 

Those (Jo) who (pherey) turn (muh-u) face away (tey) from (sati guru) the true guru, (oey) they do not (ttka’nn-i) remain steadfast but (bhramdey) wander from place to place seeking solace.

(Dharat-i) land or (asmaan-u) sky can (jhalaee) bear, i.e. they are not welcome anywhere; they (paey) remain (vich-i) in (vistta) excrement, i.e. fall prey to vices and (pacha’nn-i) perish. 5.

 

ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਇ ॥ ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਭਿਟੈ ਮਾਇ ॥੬॥

Ih jag bẖaram bẖulā▫i▫ā moh ṯẖag▫ulī pā▫e. Jinā saṯgur bẖeti▫ā ṯin neṛ na bẖitai mā▫e. ||6||

 

(Ih-u) this world (bhulaaiaa) is misled (bharam-i) in delusion with the Creator (paaey) putting in mouth (tthagauli) cheating drug of (moh) lure of pleasures of the world – which causes t forget Naam/Divine directions on role in life..

(Jinaa) those who (bheyttiaa) meet/follow (sati guru) the true guru, no (maaey/maaiaa) allurement the world (bhittai) comes (neyrr-i) near (tin) them. 6.

 

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੋ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੭॥

Saṯgur sevan so sohṇe ha▫umai mail gavā▫e. Sabaḏ raṯe se nirmale cẖalėh saṯgur bẖā▫e. ||7||

 

Those who (seyvan-i = serve) obey (sati guru) the true guru, (so) they are (sohaney = beautiful) free of vices as they (gavaaey = lose) give up (mail-u) the dirt of acting by (haumai = ego) self-will.

Those who are (ratey = imbued) conform (sabad-i = with the word) with teachings of the guru, (sey) they are (nirmaley = un-stained) free of ego; they (challah-i = walk) conduct themselves (bhaaey) will/directions of the guru – to conform to Naam. 7.

 

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਛਡਾਇ ॥੮॥੧॥੯॥

Har parabẖ ḏāṯā ek ṯūʼn ṯūʼn āpe bakẖas milā▫e  Jan Nānak sarṇāgaṯī ji▫o bẖāvai ṯivai cẖẖadā▫e ||8||1||9|

O (har-i) Almighty (prabh) Master, (too) you (eyk-u) alone are (daata = giver) benevolent; (too) you (aapey) yourself alone (bakhas-i) can bestow grace to (milaaey) unite with yourself, – the source of solace.

(Jan-u) humble third Nanak, the seeker, is in your (sarnaagti) care and obedience, please (chhaddaaey) deliver me from lures of life and (kee) (tivai) that way (jiau) as you would (bhaavai) like me to be. 8. 1. 9.
