SGGS pp 257-258, Gaurri Baavan Akhri M: 5, Paurris 33-41.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਥਾਕੇ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਘਾਲਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਲਾਥ ॥ ਸੰਚਿ ਸੰਚਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਮੂਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਨ ਸਾਥ ॥੧॥
Salok. Thāke baho biḏẖ gẖālṯe ṯaripaṯ na ṯarisnā lāth. Sancẖ sancẖ sākaṯ mū▫e Nānak mā▫i▫ā na sāth. ||1||

The mortals (thaakey) get tired (ghaaltey) toiling (bah-u) in numerous (bidh-i) ways (tripat-i) for contentment, but fail, because (trisna = craving) running to satisfy desires does not (laath = removed) end. it
(Saakat) the seekers of material things (muey) die (sanch-i sanch-i) gathering (maaia) wealth not realizing that it does not keep (saath) accompany, i.e. everyone leaves it behind on death. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਥਥਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਕੋਊ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਇ ਪਸਾਰਹੁ ਪਾਵ ॥ ਅਨਿਕ ਬੰਚ ਬਲ ਛਲ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਏਕ ਉਪਾਵ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Thathā thir ko▫ū nahī kā▫e pasārahu pāv. Anik bancẖ bal cẖẖal karahu mā▫i▫ā ek upāv.

Paurri. By the letter Thatha. (Ko-oo nahi) no one is (thir-u) imperishable; then why do you (pasaarah-u paav = spread feet) increase your entanglements trying to gather more and more wealth?
You (karah-u = do) indulge in (anik) innumerable (banch) machinations and (bal chhal) deceit, (eyk upaav) with the single aim of collecting (maaia) wealth. 

ਥੈਲੀ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਥਾਕਿ ਪਰਹੁ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥ ਮਨ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਅੰਤੇ ਅਉਸਰ ਬਾਰ ॥
Thailī sancẖahu saram karahu thāk parahu gāvār. Man kai kām na āvī anṯe a▫osar bār.

You (sram karah-u) work hard and (thaak-i parah-u) tire yourself for (thaili sanchah-u = fill the bag) gathering money, (gaavaar) o fool.
But this wealth (na aavaee) does not (kaam) work (man kai= for the mind) for your soul at (anatey) end (ausar baar) time, i.e. does not accompany on death.

ਥਿਤਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਭਜਹੁ ਸੰਤਹ ਕੀ ਸਿਖ ਲੇਹੁ ॥ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਦ ਏਕ ਸਿਉ ਇਆ ਸਾਚਾ ਅਸਨੇਹੁ ॥
Thiṯ pāvhu gobiḏ bẖajahu sanṯėh kī sikẖ leho. Parīṯ karahu saḏ ek si▫o i▫ā sācẖā asnehu.

You can (paavah-u) attain (thit-i) a stable state, i.e. have a steadfast mind; if you (leyh-u) receive (sikh) guidance from (santah) the guru to(bhajah-u) remember/obey (gobid) the Master of the universe.
(Sad) ever (preet-i karah-u = love) bear love (siau = with) for, i.e. obey, (eyk) the One Master; (iaa) this is (saacha) eternal (asneyh-u) love.

ਕਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨੋ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਏਕੈ ਹਾਥ ॥ ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੰਤ ਅਨਾਥ ॥੩੩॥
Kāran karan karāvano sabẖ biḏẖ ekai hāth. Jiṯ jiṯ lāvhu ṯiṯ ṯiṯ lagėh Nānak janṯ anāth. ||33||

(Kaaran) cause, (karan) action and (karaavno) motivation for action; (sabh bidh-i) everything (eykai haath = in the hands of One) controlled by the Creator;
The creatures are (anaath) the helpless (jant) tools; they (lagah-i = apply themselves) engage in (tit-u tit-u) those in (jit jit) what all You (laavah-u) engage them, O Master, says fifth Nanak. 33.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਦਾਸਹ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰ ॥ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸ ਅਧਾਰ ॥੧॥
Salok. Ḏāsah ek nihāri▫ā sabẖ kacẖẖ ḏevanhār. Sās sās simraṯ rahėh Nānak ḏaras aḏẖār. ||1||

Slok. (Daasah = servants) the devotees (nihaaria) see only (eyk) One (deyvanhaar = giver) beneficent Master as source of (sabh-u kachh-u) everything.
They (rahah-i) remain (simrat) in remembrance/obedience (saas-i saas-i = every breath) every moment with the hope of obtaining (daras) vision of the Creator as their (adhaar = support) aspiration, says fifth Nanak. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਦਦਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਕਉ ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰ ॥ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਅਗਨਤ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Ḏaḏā ḏāṯā ek hai sabẖ ka▫o ḏevanhār. Ḏeʼnḏe ṯot na āvī agnaṯ bẖare bẖandār.

Paurri. By the letter Dadaa. There is only (eyk) One (daata = giver) beneficent Master who (deyvanhaar) gives (kau) (sabh) to all.
No (tott-i) scarcity (aavaee = comes) occurs (deyndey) by giving; Divine (bhanddaar) storehouses are (aganat) beyond count and (bharey) ever full.

ਦੈਨਹਾਰੁ ਸਦ ਜੀਵਨਹਾਰਾ ॥ ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਿਉ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਾ ॥
Ḏainhār saḏ jīvanhārā. Man mūrakẖ ki▫o ṯāhi bisārā.

(Dainhaar) the benefactor (sad) ever (jeevanhaara = alive) giving,
(kio) why have you (bisaara) forgotten IT, (moorakh) foolish (man = mind) human being.

ਦੋਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਹੂ ਕਉ ਮੀਤਾ ॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਬੰਧੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਤਾ ॥
Ḏos nahī kāhū ka▫o mīṯā. Mā▫i▫ā moh banḏẖ parabẖ kīṯā.

O (meeta) friends, give (dos-u) blame (kau) to (nahi kaahoo = not any) no one.
(Prabh-i) the Master IT-self puts the mind in (bandh) bondage to (moh) lure of (maaia) temptations of the world play and as a result the Creator is forgotten.

ਦਰਦ ਨਿਵਾਰਹਿ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਆਪੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੇ ॥੩੪॥
Ḏaraḏ nivārėh jā ke āpe. Nānak ṯe ṯe gurmukẖ ḏẖarāpe. ||34||

(Ja key) those whose (darad = pain) affliction of forgetting is (nivaare) removed by the Creator, (tey tey) they all – obey Divine commands to kill craving – (gumukhi) with the guru’s guidance and – (dhraapey) remain satisfied remain, says fifth Nanak. 34.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਧਰ ਜੀਅਰੇ ਇਕ ਟੇਕ ਤੂ ਲਾਹਿ ਬਿਡਾਨੀ ਆਸ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
Salok. Ḏẖar jī▫are ik tek ṯū lāhi bidānī ās. Nānak nām ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai kāraj āvai rās. ||1||

O (jeearrey = person) human being, (too) you should (dhar) take (ik tteyk) one support i.e. depend only on the One Master, and (laahi) give up (aas) expectation (biddaani) from anyone else.
Remember, it is (dhiaaeeai) by paying attention to/obeying (naam-u) Divine commands, that (kaaraj) purpose/aim (aavai raas-i) -s accomplished. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਧਧਾ ਧਾਵਤ ਤਉ ਮਿਟੈ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਇ ਬਾਸੁ ॥ ਧੁਰ ਤੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਆਪਿ ਤਉ ਹੋਇ ਮਨਹਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Ḏẖaḏẖā ḏẖāvaṯ ṯa▫o mitai saṯsang ho▫e bās. Ḏẖur ṯe kirpā karahu āp ṯa▫o ho▫e manėh pargās.

Paurri. By the letter Dhadhaa. (Dhaavat) running around to find the Almighty within, (mittai = erased) ends (tau) when one (hoey baas-u = abides) sits (santsang-i) holy congregation.
O Almighty, it is when You (aapi) Yourself (kirpa karah-u) bestow grace to lead to the guru, take guidance, (tau) then (pargaas-u hoey) enlightenment/awareness of Divine commands (hoey) comes (manah-i) to mind.

ਧਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਤੇਊ ਸਚ ਸਾਹਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਸਾਹਾ ॥
Ḏẖan sācẖā ṯe▫ū sacẖ sāhā. Har har pūnjī nām bihāsā.

One who has (saachaa) true/eternal (dhan-u) the wealth – of awareness of (Divine commands (sach) truly (saahaa) wealthy, because this wealth is never lost. Such a person (bisaaha) does business, with (poonji = capital) the resource of, i.e. conforms to (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam of the Almighty.

ਧੀਰਜੁ ਜਸੁ ਸੋਭਾ ਤਿਹ ਬਨਿਆ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਜਿਹ ਸੁਨਿਆ ॥
Ḏẖīraj jas sobẖā ṯih bani▫ā. Har har nām sarvan jih suni▫ā.

(Dheeraj-u) patience, (jas-u) glory and (sobha) good name (bania) come to/befit (tih) that person’s description.
(Jih) who (sunia) listens to (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Naam of the Almighty.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਜਨ ਮਿਲੀ ਵਡਾਈ ॥੩੫॥
Gurmukẖ jih gẖat rahe samā▫ī. Nānak ṯih jan milī vadā▫ī. ||35||

(Jih) one in whose (ghatt-i) mind the Creator (rahey = remains, samaaee = contained) abides and is obeyed (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance.
(Tih jan) that person (mili) receives (vaddaai) glory before the Almighty, i.e. is approved by the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 35.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿਆ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਉਪਦੇਸਿਆ ਨਰਕੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ॥੧॥
Salok. Nānak nām nām jap japi▫ā anṯar bāhar rang. Gur pūrai upḏesi▫ā narak nāhi sāḏẖsang. ||1||

Slok. One (rang-i) experiences joy (antar-i) within and (baahar-i) outside, (japiaa) with remembrance/obedience of (jap-u) instructions/directions of (naam-u) Commands of (naam-u) the Almighty, as (updeysiaa) instructed by (poorai) the perfect (gur-i) guru, says fifth Nanak. =====

One (naah-i) does not go to (narak) hell, by following (saadhsab=g-i) guru’s company/guidance, i.e. one does not transgress and hence is not put in cycles of births and deaths (sadhsang-i) with company/guidance of the guru. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਨੰਨਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਪਰਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਸਾਹੀ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Nannā narak parėh ṯe nāhī. Jā kai man ṯan nām basāhī.

 

Paurri. By the letter Nannaa. (Tey) those persons are not (parah-i) put (narak-i) in hell. (Ja kai = whose) who (basaahi) keep, i.e. are conscious of, (naam-u) Divine commands in (man-i = mind) thoughts and (tan-i = body) actions.

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋ ਜਪਤੇ ॥ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਨਾ ਓਇ ਖਪਤੇ ॥
Nām niḏẖān gurmukẖ jo japṯe. Bikẖ mā▫i▫ā mėh nā o▫e kẖapṯe.

(Jo) those who (japtey) keep in mind (nadhaan = treasure) wealth of awareness of (naam-u) Divine commands (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance. (Oey) they do not (khaptey) perish/consumed by (bikh-u) vices caused by (maaiaa) lure of temptations.

ਨੰਨਾਕਾਰੁ ਨ ਹੋਤਾ ਤਾ ਕਹੁ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਨੋ ਜਾ ਕਹੁ ॥
Nannākār na hoṯā ṯā kaho. Nām manṯar gur ḏīno jā kaho.

Entry to the Creator’s abode is not (nannakaar = say no) denied (ta kah-u) to those,
(ja kah-u) whom the guru (deenai) gives (matr = mantra) the instruction to live by (naam-u) Divine commands, and they comply.

ਨਿਧਿ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੂਰੇ ॥ ਤਹ ਬਾਜੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਨਹਦ ਤੂਰੇ ॥੩੬॥
Niḏẖ niḏẖān har amriṯ pūre. Ŧah bāje Nānak anhaḏ ṯūre. ||36||

The minds which are (poorey) filled with (ammrit) life-giving (nidh-i = treasure) awareness of (nidhaan) Naam of (har-i) the Almighty. (Tah) there (toorey = musical instruments) the celestial music (baajey) plays (anhad) continuously i.e. they remain connected with the Creator within. 36.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਤਜਿ ਪਰਪੰਚ ਮੋਹ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਊ ਆਰਾਧੀਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
Salok. Paṯ rākẖī gur pārbarahm ṯaj parpancẖ moh bikār. Nānak so▫ū ārāḏẖī▫ai anṯ na pārāvār. ||1||

Slok. (Paarbrahm) the Supreme Being and guru (pat raakhi) preserves the honor of those who (taji) give up (bikaar) the vices of (parpanch, moh) machinations, and attachment to objects of transitory pleasures.
We should (aaraadhiai) remember (sou) that Master whose powers have no (ant) limits and boundaries, says Nanak. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਪਪਾ ਪਰਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਅਗਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Papā parmiṯ pār na pā▫i▫ā. Paṯiṯ pāvan agam har rā▫i▫ā.

Paurri. By the letter Pappaa. The Almighty is (parmit) beyond measure, no one can (paaia) know (paar-u = far end) expanse of Divine domain. 
(Har-i) the Divine (raaia) is sovereign and (agam) beyond reach/comprehension; IT’s remembrance/obedience (paavan) purifies (patit) those fallen to vices.

ਹੋਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕੋਟ ਅਪਰਾਧੂ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ॥
Hoṯ punīṯ kot aprāḏẖū. Amriṯ nām jāpėh mil sāḏẖū.

(Kott = crore) millions of (apraadhoo) wrongdoers (hot) are (puneet) purified, by (japeh) remembrance/obedience to (amrit) life-giving (naam-u) Divine commands (mil-i) in the company/with guidance of (saadhoo) the guru.

ਪਰਪਚ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ ਮੋਹ ਮਿਟਨਾਈ ॥ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਆਪਿ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
Parpacẖ ḏẖaroh moh mitnāī. Jā ka▫o rākẖo āp gusā▫ī.

(Parpach/parpanch) machinations, (dhroh) breach of trust/deceit and (moh) attachments to the world-play (mitnaaee) are given up,
(ka kau) of one who You, (gusaaee) the Master of the universe (aap-i) Yourself (raakhah-u) protect from them.

ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਰ ਸੋਊ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਸਰ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥੩੭॥
Pāṯisāhu cẖẖaṯar sir so▫ū. Nānak ḏūsar avar na ko▫ū. ||37||

(So-oo) that alone is (paatsaahu) the Emperor with (Chattar) crown (sir) on the head i.e. there is only Master of the whole world.
there is (na ko-oo) no (doosar = second) one (avar-u) else. 37.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਫਾਹੇ ਕਾਟੇ ਮਿਟੇ ਗਵਨ ਫਤਿਹ ਭਈ ਮਨਿ ਜੀਤ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਥਿਤ ਪਾਈ ਫਿਰਨ ਮਿਟੇ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤ ॥੧॥
Salok. Fāhe kāte mite gavan faṯih bẖa▫ī man jīṯ. Nānak gur ṯe thiṯ pā▫ī firan mite niṯ nīṯ. ||1||

Slok. When one (Fatih bhaee) success is achieved against lure of temptations by (jeet) capturing (man-i) the mind, i.e. acting by self-will ignoring Divine commands; once (phaahey = traps) lures (kaattey = cut) removed from the mind, (gavan) running/craving (mittey = erased) is overcome.

Then (thit) steady state of focus on Naam/Divine commands (paaee) obtained (tey) with (gur) the guru’s guidance, and (phiran) cycles of births and deaths are (nit neet) forever (mittaey) are obviated, says fifth Nanak.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਫਫਾ ਫਿਰਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਤੂ ਆਇਆ ॥ ਦ੍ਰੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Fafā firaṯ firaṯ ṯū ā▫i▫ā. Ḏarulabẖ ḏeh kalijug mėh pā▫i▫ā.

Paurri. By the letter Phaphaa. O mortal, (Too aaia) you came/took human birth (phirat phirat) after wandering in numerous life forms.
And (paaia) obtained (drulabh) hard-to-get human (deyh) body (mah-i) in (kaljug) this age of conflicts/duality.

ਫਿਰਿ ਇਆ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਨ ਹਾਥਾ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਤਉ ਕਟੀਅਹਿ ਫਾਸਾ ॥
Fir i▫ā a▫osar cẖarai na hāthā. Nām japahu ṯa▫o katī▫ah fāsā.

(Iaa) this (ausar-u) opportunity of human birth will not (charai haatha = come into your hands) come your way (phir-i) again.
If you (japah-u) conform to (naam) Divine commands, (tau) then (phaasa) bondage to temptations will (katteeah-i) cut/end – and union with the Creator attained.

ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਏਕਹਿ ਏਕ ਜਪਹੁ ਜਪੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
Fir fir āvan jān na ho▫ī. Ėkėh ek japahu jap so▫ī.

There will (na hoee) be no (phir-i phir-i) repeated (aavan = coming) births and (jaan-u = going) deaths; so (japah-u) conform to (jap-u) directions of  (eykah-i) the One Master.

ਕਰਹੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਚਾਰੇ ॥੩੮॥
Karahu kirpā parabẖ karnaihāre. Mel leho Nānak becẖāre. ||38||

But we cannot achieve anything on our own and should pray: O (prabh) Almighty (karnaihaarai) Creator, please (meyl-i leyhu) unite us with You, says (bechaarey) hapless/humble fifth Nanak. 38.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਬਿਨਉ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਗੁਪਾਲ ॥ ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪੈ ਬਹੁ ਭੋਗ ਰਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਰਵਾਲ ॥੧॥
Salok. Bin▫o sunhu ṯum pārbarahm ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl gupāl. Sukẖ sampai baho bẖog ras Nānak sāḏẖ ravāl. ||1||

Slok. O (Paarbrahm) Supreme Spirit/being (gupaal) Sustain or, (tum) You are  (daiaal) compassionate to (deen) the hapless, (sunah-u = listen) this is my (binau) supplication.
Please grant me (ravaal) the dust of the feet, i.e. guidance, of (saadh) Your devotees; that is (sukh) peace (sampai)and wealth as well as source of (bah-u) abundant (bhog ras) pleasures for me, says fifth Nanak. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਬਬਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਾਨਤ ਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ॥ ਬੈਸਨੋ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਚ ਧਰਮਾ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Babā barahm jānaṯ ṯe barahmā. Baisno ṯe gurmukẖ sucẖ ḏẖarmā.

Paurri. By the letter Babaa. One who (jaanat) knows/understands (brahm-u) the Creator (tey) that person is a Brahmin. 
The (baisno) Vaisnav, the believer in Vishnu is one who (gurmukhi) by following the guru’s teachings performs (dharma) duties (such = pious) free of vices.

ਬੀਰਾ ਆਪਨ ਬੁਰਾ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥ ਤਾਹੂ ਬੁਰਾ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ॥
Bīrā āpan burā mitāvai. Ŧāhū burā nikat nahī āvai.

A (beera) brave warrior is one who (mittaavai) banishes/overcomes (apna) own (buraa) the evil within.  
Committing (buraa) evil does (na aavai) does not come (nikatt-i) near (taahoo) him.

ਬਾਧਿਓ ਆਪਨ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਬੰਧਾ ॥ ਦੋਸੁ ਦੇਤ ਆਗਹ ਕਉ ਅੰਧਾ ॥
Bāḏẖi▫o āpan ha▫o ha▫o banḏẖā. Ḏos ḏeṯ āgah ka▫o anḏẖā.

One who is (bandhio = tied) in the grip of (aapan) his/her own (hau, hau) self-importance,
that person (andha) blinded by ego (deyt) gives (dos-u) blame to (aagah = ahead) others.

ਬਾਤ ਚੀਤ ਸਭ ਰਹੀ ਸਿਆਨਪ ॥ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਜਨਾਵਹੁ ਸੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਨਾਨਕ ॥੩੯॥
Bāṯ cẖīṯ sabẖ rahī si▫ānap. Jisahi janāvhu so jānai Nānak. ||39||

(Baat cheet) mere talk and (sabh) all (siaanap) wisdom/cleverness (rahi) do not work, i.e. false symbolism is of no use.
O Master, only (jisah-i) one whom You (janaavah-u) give the understanding, (so) that person (jaanai) understands/finds You, says fifth Nanak. 39.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਅਘ ਦੂਖ ਨਾਸ ਮਨਹਿ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਹਰੇ ॥ ਸੰਤਸੰਗ ਜਿਹ ਰਿਦ ਬਸਿਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਨ ਭ੍ਰਮੇ ॥੧॥
Salok. Bẖai bẖanjan agẖ ḏūkẖ nās manėh arāḏẖ hare. Saṯsang jih riḏ basi▫o Nānak ṯe na bẖarame. ||1||

Slok. (Manah-i) in your mind, (araadh-i) invoke the Master who (naas) is the destroyer of (agh) wrongdoings and (dookh) faults.
(Jih) one in whose (rid) heart/mind (santsang) holy company (basio) abides i.e. those who go to holy congregation, (tey) that person does not (bhramey) wander to other places, says fifth Nanak. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਭਭਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਮਿਟਾਵਹੁ ਅਪਨਾ ॥ ਇਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਹੈ ਸੁਪਨਾ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Bẖabẖā bẖaram mitāvhu apnā. I▫ā sansār sagal hai supnā.

Paurri. By the letter Bhabhaa. (Mittaavah-u) shed (apna = own) your (bharam-u) delusion – that worldly pleasures are forever. (Iaa) this (sansaar) world-play (hai) is (sagal) all a dream, i.e. everything is transitory – do not get attached to them.

ਭਰਮੇ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ॥ ਭਰਮੇ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇਵਾ ॥
Bẖarme sur nar ḏevī ḏevā. Bẖarme siḏẖ sāḏẖik barahmevā.

(Sur-i nar) angels, (nar) humans, (deyvi) goddesses and (deyva) gods (bhrmey) get deluded. (Sidh) saints, (saadhik) seekers and those (brahmeyva) like Brahma (bharmey) transgress.

ਭਰਮਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਡਹਕਾਏ ॥ ਦੁਤਰ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖਮ ਇਹ ਮਾਏ ॥
Bẖaram bẖaram mānukẖ dahkā▫e. Ḏuṯar mahā bikẖam ih mā▫e.

(Ih) this (maae) world-play is (maha bikham) highly treacherous and (dutar) hard-to-cross i.e. the vices in the world-play are formidable;
Temptations (bharam-i bharam-i) keep luring (maanukh) humans and (ddahkaaey) deceive the humans i.e. lead them astray to commit vices.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੈ ਮੋਹ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਹ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪੦॥
Gurmukẖ bẖaram bẖai moh mitā▫i▫ā. Nānak ṯeh param sukẖ pā▫i▫ā. ||40||

One who (mittaaiaa = erases) removes (bhram) delusion of (bhai) fear of other things like superstitions (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance.
(Teyh) that person (paaia) attains (param) the supreme (sukh) comfort i.e. becomes free of temptations and is at peace. 40.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਪਟਿਓ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਗ ॥ ਮਾਗਨ ਤੇ ਜਿਹ ਤੁਮ ਰਖਹੁ ਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਹਿ ਰੰਗ ॥੧॥
Salok. Mā▫i▫ā dolai baho biḏẖī man lapti▫o ṯih sang. Māgan ṯe jih ṯum rakẖahu so Nānak nāmėh rang. ||1||

(Maaia) temptations in the world-play (ddolai) sways the humans in (bah-u) numerous (bidhi) ways and (man) the human mind (laptio) clings (tih sang) to them.
O Creator, (jih) one whom (tum) You (rakhah-u) save, i.e. unable to resist (maagan) asking for transitory pleasures, (s-u) that person (rang) is imbued with (rang) love (naamah-i) for Naam/Divine virtues and commands, says fifth Nanak. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਮਮਾ ਮਾਗਨਹਾਰ ਇਆਨਾ ॥ ਦੇਨਹਾਰ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਓ ਸੁਜਾਨਾ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Mamā māganhār i▫ānā. Ḏenhār ḏe rahi▫o sujānā.

Paurri. By the letter Mamaa. A person (maaganhaar) asks (iaana) like a child.
And (deynhaar) the beneficent giver (dey rahio) keeps giving; IT is (sujaana = wise) knows what everyone needs.

ਜੋ ਦੀਨੋ ਸੋ ਏਕਹਿ ਬਾਰ ॥ ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਹ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
Jo ḏīno so ekėh bār. Man mūrakẖ kah karahi pukār.

(Jo) whatever wherewithal/awareness of Naam (deeno) was to be given was given (eykah-i baar) once for all.
O (moorakh) the foolish (man) mind (kah) why do you (kareyh-i pukaar) make entreaty/keep asking, i.e. reflect on your blessings.

ਜਉ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਤਉ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਬੀਆ ॥ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਕੁਸਲ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਥੀਆ ॥
Ja▫o māgėh ṯa▫o māgėh bī▫ā. Jā ṯe kusal na kāhū thī▫ā.

(Jau) when you ask (tau) then you ask for (beeaa) other things –for transitory pleasures.
(Ja tey) by which (na kaahoo) no (kusal) happiness (theeaa) happens, i.e. which do not bring happiness.

ਮਾਗਨਿ ਮਾਗ ਤ ਏਕਹਿ ਮਾਗ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਪਰਹਿ ਪਰਾਗ ॥੪੧॥
Māgan māg ṯa ekėh māg. Nānak jā ṯe parėh parāg. ||41||

(Maagan-i maag) if you have to ask, (ta) then (maag) ask for (eykah-i) the one thing i.e. awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands, (tey) by (ja) which you may (parah-i) land (paraag) on far shore, i.e. overcome vices in the world-play and not be reborn, says fifth Nanak. 41.
