SGGS pp 259-260, Gaurri Baavan Akhri M: 5, Paurris 42 – 47.

ਸਲੋਕ ॥ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੰਤ ॥ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਨਿਓ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੁਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੧॥
Salok. Maṯ pūrī parḏẖān ṯe gur pūre man manṯ. Jih jāni▫o parabẖ āpunā Nānak ṯe bẖagvanṯ. ||1||

Slok. Those who have (mant = mantra) teachings of (gur poorey) the perfect guru (man) in mind, (tey) they have (mat poori) perfect thinking i.e. they are wise, and (pardhaan = president) stand out..
And those who with the guru’s teachings (jaania) recognize (apna = own) our (prabh) Master within, (tey) they are (bhagwant) fortunate, says fifth Nanak. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਮਮਾ ਜਾਹੂ ਮਰਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥ ਭੇਟਤ ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਪਤੀਆਨਾ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Mamā jāhū maram pacẖẖānā. Bẖetaṯ sāḏẖsang paṯī▫ānā.

Paurri. By the letter Mamaa. (Jaahoo) those who (pachhaana) understand (maram) mysteries of the Creator i.e. understands Divine virtues and commands. 
They achieve by (bheyttat) joining (sadhsang) holy congregation, and find the experience (patiaana) satisfying.

ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਉਆ ਕੈ ਸਮਤ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਰਹਤ ਅਉਤਾਰਾ ॥
Ḏukẖ sukẖ u▫ā kai samaṯ bīcẖārā. Narak surag rahaṯ a▫uṯārā.

(Uaa kai) in their (beechaara) consideration, (dukh) pain and (sukh) comfort (samat) are the equal, i.e. are happy with Divine will. 
They (rahat) remain free from (autaara = falling into) the idea of (narak surag) hell and heaven.

ਤਾਹੂ ਸੰਗ ਤਾਹੂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪਾ ॥ ਪੂਰਨ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਿਸੇਖਾ ॥
Ŧāhū sang ṯāhū nirlepā. Pūran gẖat gẖat purakẖ bisekẖā.

(Taahoo) the same Master is (sang) with everyone but (nirleypa) but untouched. They see (taahoo) the same (purakh) the all-pervasive Master is (biseykha = particularly) fully (pooran = filled) present in (ghatt ghatt) everybody.

ਉਆ ਰਸ ਮਹਿ ਉਆਹੂ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਪਤ ਨਹੀ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੪੨॥
U▫ā ras mėh u▫āhū sukẖ pā▫i▫ā. Nānak lipaṯ nahī ṯih mā▫i▫ā. ||42||

(Ua ras = that elixir) with the experience of Divine virtues within (sukh) peace (paaia) is experienced (uhaaoo = there) in the mind. 
One who has this experience is not (lipat) touched by (maaia) temptations of the world-play, says fifth Nanak. 42.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਯਾਰ ਮੀਤ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਾਜਨਹੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਛੂਟਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਟੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਨੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
Salok. Yār mīṯ sun sājanhu bin har cẖẖūtan nāhi. Nānak ṯih banḏẖan kate gur kī cẖarnī pāhi. ||1||

Slok. (Sun-i) listen my (yaar meet) dear friends and (saajanh-u) companions, (chhoottan) freedom from temptations in the world-play is not possible (bin-u) without obedience of (har-i) the Almighty.
(Bandhan) bondage to the world-play (kattey) is cut of (tih) those who (charni paah-i = fall at feet) submit to the guru’s teachings – of living by Divine virtues and commands, says fifth Nanak. 1.

ਪਵੜੀ ॥ ਯਯਾ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਤ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧੀਆ ॥ ਏਕ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਹ ਲਉ ਸਿਧੀਆ ॥
Pavṛī. Ya▫yā jaṯan karaṯ baho biḏẖī▫ā. Ėk nām bin kah la▫o siḏẖī▫ā.

Paurri. By the letter Yayyaa. A person may (karat) make (jatan) efforts of (bah-u) numerous (bidheea = methods) ways.
but (kah lau = how?) cannot achieve (sidheeaa) success in obtaining freedom from temptations in the world-play (bin) without remembering and living by (eyk) one Naam, i.e. Divine commands/ the natural laws of the Creator.

ਯਾਹੂ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਹੋਤ ਛੁਟਾਰਾ ॥ ਉਆਹੂ ਜਤਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਾਰਾ ॥
Yāhū jaṯan kar hoṯ cẖẖutārā. U▫āhū jaṯan sāḏẖ sangārā.

(Jatan) the efforts (yaahoo) by which (chhuttaara) freedom (hot) is obtained,
awareness of (uaahu) those (jatan = measures) methods is obtained (sangaara) in the company/with guidance of (saadh) the guru.  

ਯਾ ਉਬਰਨ ਧਾਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਊ ॥ ਉਆਹਿ ਜਪੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਬਰ ਨ ਹੋਊ ॥
Yā ubran ḏẖārai sabẖ ko▫ū. U▫āhi jape bin ubar na ho▫ū.

(Sabh-u ko-oo) every one (dhaarai) wishes to (ubran = rising above) overcome temptations; but (ubar) escape is not (ho-oo= happen) possible (bin-u) without (japey) obeying (uaah-i = that) the Almighty.

ਯਾਹੂ ਤਰਨ ਤਾਰਨ ਸਮਰਾਥਾ ॥ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਨਰਨਾਥਾ ॥
Yāhū ṯaran ṯāran samrāthā. Rākẖ leho nirgun narnāthā.

Virtues and commands of (yaahoo = that) the Almighty are (taran) the ship (samraatha) capable to (taaran) ferry the soul across the world ocean of temptations.
One should supplicate: O (nirgun = without attributes) unseen (narnaathaa = master of creatures) Master of all, please (raakh-i leyhu) save me from vices.

ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਜਿਹ ਆਪਿ ਜਨਾਈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਮਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਆਈ ॥੪੩॥
Man bacẖ karam jih āp janā▫ī. Nānak ṯih maṯ pargatī ā▫ī. ||43||

(Jih) those whom (aap-i) You (janaaee = make known) enable to remember You in, i.e. who remain conscious of the Almighty in (man = mind (thoughts, (bach/bachan = words) speech and (kram) deeds.

(Tih) they (pragatti = manifestation, aaee = comes) get awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands (mat-i) in mind, says fifth Nanak. 43.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਰੋਸੁ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਸੰਗ ਕਰਹੁ ਆਪਨ ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਮਾਨਾ ਜਗਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
Salok. Ros na kāhū sang karahu āpan āp bīcẖār. Ho▫e nimānā jag rahhu Nānak naḏrī pār. ||1||

Do not (ros karah-u) be angry (kaahu sang) with any one, but (beechaar-i) reflect on your (aapan) own (aap-u) self, i.e. whether you are responsible for the conflict.
If you (hoey raha-hu) remain (nimaana = without self-importance) humble (jagii = world) in life you will land on (paar-i) far shore, i.e. get across the world ocean of vices (nadri) with Divine grace, says fifth Nanak. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਰਾਰਾ ਰੇਨ ਹੋਤ ਸਭ ਜਾ ਕੀ ॥ ਤਜਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਛੁਟੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਕੀ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Rārā ren hoṯ sabẖ jā kī. Ŧaj abẖimān cẖẖutai ṯerī bākī.

Paurri. By the letter Raara. The guru, (ren) the dust (ja ki) of whose feet (sabh) all wish (hot) to be i.e. whom everyone should follow.
You should (taj-i) give up (abhimaan) vanity and follow the guru; this way (teyri) your (baaki) debt will (chhutai) be liquidated i.e. you would have done your duties with nothing pending.

ਰਣਿ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਤਉ ਸੀਝਹਿ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਜਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
Raṇ ḏargahi ṯa▫o sījẖėh bẖā▫ī. Ja▫o gurmukẖ rām nām liv lā▫ī.

(Tau) you would (seejhah-i) be successful (ran-i = in battle) against vices in life and approved (dargah) in the Creator’s court i.e. be accepted for union by the Creator, (bhaaee) my brother. (Jau) if your (liv) attention is (laaee) fixed on compliance (naam) virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty, (gurmukh-i) under the guru’s guidance.
 
ਰਹਤ ਰਹਤ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
Rahaṯ rahaṯ rėh jāhi bikārā. Gur pūre kai sabaḏ apārā.

(Bikaara) vices (rah-i jaahi = restrained) have no effect (rahat rahat) by continuously remaining focused on (sabad-i = word) teachings of (poorey) the perfect (gur) guru to obey (apaaraa) the Infinite.

ਰਾਤੇ ਰੰਗ ਨਾਮ ਰਸ ਮਾਤੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੀਨੀ ਦਾਤੇ ॥੪੪॥
Rāṯe rang nām ras māṯe. Nānak har gur kīnī ḏāṯe. ||44||

They (raatey) imbued with the love of and (maatey) intoxicated/immersed in (ras) elixir of (naam) Divine virtues and commands.

On whom (har-i) the Almighty (keenee = makes, daatey = charity) is kind to lead to (gur) the guru who imparts awareness of Naam, says fifth Nanak. 44.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਲਾਲਚ ਝੂਠ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਇਆ ਦੇਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਬਾਸ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੂਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥੧॥
Salok. Lālacẖ jẖūṯẖ bikẖai bi▫āḏẖ i▫ā ḏehī mėh bās. Har har amriṯ gurmukẖ pī▫ā Nānak sūkẖ nivās. ||1||

Slok. (Biaadh-i) maladies of (laalach) greed, (jhootth) falsehood, (bikhai = poison) money obtained by unfair means, they make (baas) abode (mah-i) in (deyhi) the body.

One who (peeaa) drinks (amrit = life-giving elixir) the medicine of awareness of (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Divine virtues and commands, gets (sookh) well, says fifth Nanak. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਲਲਾ ਲਾਵਉ ਅਉਖਧ ਜਾਹੂ ॥ ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਤਿਹ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਖਿਨਾਹੂ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. Lalā lāva▫o a▫ukẖaḏẖ jāhū. Ḏūkẖ ḏaraḏ ṯih mitėh kẖināhū.

Pauri. By the letter Lalaa. When the (aukhadh) medicine of Divine virtues is (laavau) administered (jaahoo) to someone.
(dookh) afflictions and (darad) pain (tih) of that person (mittah-i) is cured (khinaahu) instantly. 

ਨਾਮ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਜਿਹ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਿਤਾਵੈ ॥ ਤਾਹਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥
Nām a▫ukẖaḏẖ jih riḏai hiṯāvai. Ŧāhi rog supnai nahī āvai.

(Jih) one who (hitaavai) loves (aukhadh-u) medicine (ridai) from the heart, i.e. lovingly obeys Naam.

(Rog-u) affliction of ego does not (aavai) come/afflict (taah-i) that person even (supnai) in his/her dreams.

ਹਰਿ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਸਭ ਘਟ ਹੈ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
Har a▫ukẖaḏẖ sabẖ gẖat hai bẖā▫ī. Gur pūre bin biḏẖ na banā▫ī.

O (bhaaee = brethren) dear, (har-i) the Divine (aukhadh-u) medicine is present in (sabh) all (ghatt = bodies) humans.

Its (bidh-i) method of use is not (banaaee) made known (bin-u) without guidance of (poorey) the perfect guru.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੂਖ ਨ ਥੀਆ ॥੪੫॥
Gur pūrai sanjam kar ḏī▫ā. Nānak ṯa▫o fir ḏūkẖ na thī▫ā. ||45||

When (poorai) the perfect (gur-i) guru (kar-i deeaa) makes (sanjam-u) the method of administration, i.e. gives understanding of Naam.

(Ta) then one is not (theeaa = happen) afflicted with (dookh) faults/vices (phir-i) again. 45.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਵਾਸੁਦੇ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਮੈ ਊਨ ਨ ਕਤਹੂ ਠਾਇ ॥ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਇ ਦੁਰਾਇ ॥੧॥
Salok. vāsuḏev sarbaṯar mai ūn na kaṯhū ṯẖā▫e. Anṯar bāhar sang hai Nānak kā▫e ḏurā▫e. ||1||

Slok. (Vaasudev/vishv-dev = Master of the universe) the Creator is present (mai) in (sarbatr) all, (na katahoo) no (tthaaey) place is (oon) devoid of IT.
It is (sang-i) with everyone (antar-i) within and (baahar-i) outside; (kaaey = who?) no one can (duraai) conceal one’s thoughts and deeds from God, says fifth Nanak. 1.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਵਵਾ ਵੈਰੁ ਨ ਕਰੀਐ ਕਾਹੂ ॥ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਮਾਹੂ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. vavā vair na karī▫ai kāhū. Gẖat gẖat anṯar barahm samāhū.

Paurri. By the letter Vavaa. We should (na kareeai) not bear (vair-u) enmity with (kaahoo) anyone. 
(Brahm) the Supreme Spirit (samaahoo) is present in (ghat ghat) everybody.

ਵਾਸੁਦੇਵ ਜਲ ਥਲ ਮਹਿ ਰਵਿਆ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਹੀ ਗਵਿਆ ॥
vāsuḏev jal thal mėh ravi▫ā. Gur parsāḏ virlai hī gavi▫ā.

(Vaasudeyv) Master of the Universe (raviaa) pervades (mah-i) in (jal) water and (thal) land. (Hi) only some (virlai) rare person (gaviaa) searches and finds God.

ਵੈਰ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਮਿਟੇ ਤਿਹ ਮਨ ਤੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋ ਸੁਨਤੇ ॥
vair viroḏẖ mite ṯih man ṯe. Har kīrṯan gurmukẖ jo sunṯe.

(Vair) enmity and (virodh) antagonism against others (mittey) are removed (tey) from (man) the mind (tih) of those.
(Jo) who (suntey) listen to (keertan-u) praise of virtues of (har-i) the Almighty (gurmukh-i) from the guru’s mouth, i.e. in holy congregation.

ਵਰਨ ਚਿਹਨ ਸਗਲਹ ਤੇ ਰਹਤਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋ ਕਹਤਾ ॥੪੬॥
varan cẖihan saglah ṯe rahṯā. Nānak har har gurmukẖ jo kahṯā. ||46||

(Jo) one who, (kahtaa = says) recounts and obeys (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-I = makes green) rejuvenating virtues and commands.

S/he knows that the Creator is (rahta = without) beyond (varan) color or (chihan = physical

Note: The Slok below uses the term ਸਾਕਤ (saakat). Saakat literally means the worshipper of Shakti or the goddess. In Hindu texts the goddess is approached for help in things like killing of demons, acquiring wealth or other benedictions. What is sought is not spiritual experience but material or physical gains. Gurmat, the guru’s teachings, treats this as not having faith in the Almighty and seeking help of others instead, the very antithesis of seeking the Creator.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਹਾਨੀਆ ਸਾਕਤ ਮੁਗਧ ਅਜਾਨ ॥ ੜੜਕਿ ਮੁਏ ਜਿਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਖਾਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਨ ॥੧॥
Salok. Ha▫o ha▫o karaṯ bihānī▫ā sākaṯ mugaḏẖ ajān. ṛaṛak mu▫e ji▫o ṯarikẖāvaʼnṯ Nānak kiraṯ kamān. ||1||

Slok. Life of (mugadh) foolish (ajaan) ignorant (saakat = worshipper of Shakti) one who turns away from God, (bihaaneeaa) passes (karat = doing) saying (hau hau) I and my, i.e. gloating over own merits and wealth, – ignoring the Creator who gave these.

Such persons (muey) die (rrarrak-i) writhing (jiau) like (trikhaavant) a thirsty person, because they (kamaan) act (kirat-i) by nature formed by deeds, says fifth Nanak. 1.

 

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ੜਾੜਾ ੜਾੜਿ ਮਿਟੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ॥ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਤਤੁ ਨਾਮ ਅਰਾਧੂ ॥
Pa▫oṛī. ṛāṛā ṛāṛ mitai sang sāḏẖū. Karam ḏẖaram ṯaṯ nām arāḏẖū.

Paurri. By the letter Rraarra. (Raarr-i) strife due to conflicts (mittai) ends (sang-i) in the company/with the guidance of (saadhoo) the guru, who teaches (araadhu) to invoke (naam) Divine virtues and commands, (tat-u) the essence of (karam = deeds, dharam = religion) religious practices.

ਰੂੜੋ ਜਿਹ ਬਸਿਓ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ ਉਆ ਕੀ ੜਾੜਿ ਮਿਟਤ ਬਿਨਸਾਹੀ ॥
Rūṛo jih basi▫o riḏ māhī. U▫ā kī ṛāṛ mitaṯ binsāhī.

(Jih) one (maahi) in whose (rid) mind (roorro) the fascinating Master (basio) abides, (uaa ki) his/her (raarr-i) strife (mittat = erased, binsaahi = destroyed) ends.

ੜਾੜਿ ਕਰਤ ਸਾਕਤ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ॥ ਜੇਹ ਹੀਐ ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
ṛāṛ karaṯ sākaṯ gāvārā. Jeh hī▫ai ahaʼn▫buḏẖ bikārā.

(Saakat) those who turn away from the Creator are (gaavaara) foolish, (karat) indulge (raarr-i) in conflicts.
(Jeyh) such a person have (bikaara) the evil of (ahangbudh-i) ego (heeai) in mind.

ੜਾੜਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ੜਾੜਿ ਮਿਟਾਈ॥ ਨਿਮਖ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਮਝਾਈ ॥੪੭॥
ṛāṛā gurmukẖ ṛāṛ mitā▫ī. Nimakẖ māhi Nānak samjẖā▫ī. ||47||

By the letter Rraarra. (gurmukh-i) those who follow the guru (mittaaee) end (rrarr-i) strife from life. (maah-i) in (nimak) a moment once guru (samjhaaee) causes them to understand Naam, says fifth Nanak. 47.
