Rāg āsā mėhlā 3 patī

Composition of the third Guru in Raga Aasa (patti) writing on a tablet.

Note: Another Shabad by the first Guru Titled Patti Likhi precedes this Shabad by the third Guru titled Patti. Both refer to writing of Gurmukhi Alphabets. They ask one not to just see them as mentioning the letters of alphabet but have messages for all human beings.

Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance:

Note: The message from this Shabad is that one who teaches others should first practice the teachings. From verse two, it is addressed to a Paadhaa, or the teacher, castigating him for his focus on material things.

(Ayo) the vowels Airaa, Eerri and Oorra, Yayyaa and (Angnai) ਅੰ  represent (aaia = coming) creation of (sabh-u) the whole (jag-u) world; (Kaakhai) the letters Kakaa, Khakhaa, (ghangnai) Gagaa, Ghaghaa and Ngnangnaa represent the fact that everything (bhaia) is subject to (kaal-u = death) destruction.

(Reeri lalli) Raara and Lalaa represent (kamaaney) committing (paap) transgressions and that one (parr-i) falls into (avgan) vices and (veesria) forgets (gun) virtues. 1.

Man aisā lekẖā ṯūʼn kī paṛi▫ā.   Lekẖā ḏeṇā ṯerai sir rahi▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

O my (man) mind, (ki) what (aisa) type of (leykha = writing) message of the Almighty (too’n) you (parria) have read, if (leykha deyna) debit balance (rahia) remains (teyrai sir-i = on your head) on you i.e. you are not living by Divine commands and will have to account for that. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

(Sidhan-ngnaaiai): You do not (simrah-i) remember and sing praises of (siddha’n = One who gives Sidhis) the Almighty; (Nanai) by the letter Nanaa, (tudh-u) you do not (laiaa = take) assimilate (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands.

(Chhachhai) by the letter Chhachhaa: The lifespan (chheejah-i = wearing out) is being shortened (ahinis-i) day and night; (moorrey) o fool, with the above shortcomings, (kiau) how will you (chhoottah-i) escape (paakrriaa) being caught (jam-i) by the agent of Divine justice, i.e. you will have to answer for your negligence. 2.

(Babai) by the letter Babaa: (Moorrey) o fool, (bhuley) misled (bharam-i) by delusion, you (naahi) do not (boojhah-i) understand – that your objective is union with the Creator – and (teyra) your (janam-u = birth) human life (gaiaa) is being wasted.

You (dharaaio = put) have taken (anhoda) the un-deserved (naau = name) title of (paadhaa) a teacher; remember, (tudh-u) you are (laiaa) taking (bhaar-u) the load of (avraa) others i.e. you will be held responsible for the faults of your students. 3.

Jajai joṯ hir la▫ī ṯerī mūṛe anṯ ga▫i▫ā pacẖẖuṯāvhigā.   Ėk sabaḏ ṯūʼn cẖīnėh nāhī fir fir jūnī āvhigā. ||4||

(Jajai) by the letter Jajaa: Material nature has (hir-i laee) robbed (tudh-u = you) your mind of (jot-i = light) Divine virtues within, (moorey) o fool; you (pachhutaavahiga) will repent (gaiaa) when you go to the Divine court (ant-i) in the end – and have to account for your deeds.

(Too’n) you do not (cheenah-i = recognise) remember and obey (eyk-u sabad-u = one word) commands of the Creator, and shall therefore (aavahiga = come) be born (phir-i phir-i) again and again (jooni) in various life-forms. 4.

(Parr-u = read) remember (so = those) the (likhia = written) ordained (tudh-u sir-i = on your head) Divine commands (tudh-u) for your role; do not (sikhaal-i) teach (bikhia) material aspects (no) to (avra) others.

Remember (phaaha) the noose will (pahla) first (paiaa) be put on (paadhey) the teacher and only (pichho dey) after that (gal-i) round the necks (chaattrria) of the students. 5.

(Sasai) by the letter Sasaa: (Moorey) o fool, you have (gaio = gone) lost your (sanjam-u) professional discipline and (laiaa) take (kuthaaey = misplaced) improper (daan = alms) payment – for conducting the wedding of your host’s daughter.

(Saaee) that (putri) daughter of (jajmaan) the host is (sa) also (teyri) your daughter; by (khaadhai = eating) taking (eyt-u) this (dhaan-i = rice bought with that money) money (teyra) your (janam-u) human birth is being (gaiaa = lost) wasted –you are losing the opportunity for union with the Creator. 6.

(Mammai) by the letter Mamaa: (Haumai) ego, (vaddaa) the great (rog-u) affliction (paiaa) present in your mind has (hir-i laee) robbed (teyri) your (mat-i) understanding.

You have not (cheenia) recognized (brahm-u) the Creator (antar aatmai) in the inner-self – do not live by Divine virtues and commands – and have instead (bhaiaa) become (muhtaaj = dependent) a seeker of (maaia) money – you extort money from people. 7.

(Kakai) by the letter Kakaa: (Moorrey) o fool, you are (bharmiohu = deluded) possessed by (kaam-i) lust and (krodh-i) anger; because of (laagey) being afflicted (mamta = my, mine) with possessive-ness (tudh-u) you have (visria) forgotten (har-i) the Almighty.

You (parrah-i) read, seemingly (gunah-i) contemplate and (pukaarah-i = call out) read aloud the scriptures to others (bahut-u) a lot, but (vin-u) without (boojhey) understanding their teachings, you are (ddoob-i mooa = drowned dead) immersed in vices. 8.

(Tatai) by the letter Tataa: You (jalioh-u) have burnt yourself, i.e. wasted your life, (taamas-i = ignorance, inaction) because of negative attributes; (thathai) by the letter Thathaa: Every (thaan) place you go (bharist-u hoa) is defiled by your presence, (moorrey) o fool.

(Ghahai) by the letter Ghaghaa: (Too’n) you (phirah-i = wander) go from (ghar-i ghar-i) house to house seeking money; (dadai) by the letter Dadaa: (Tudh-u) you have not (laiaa) received the real (daan = alms) benediction of learning from within, o fool. 9.

Papai pār na pavhī mūṛe parpancẖ ṯūʼn palacẖ rahi▫ā.   Sacẖai āp kẖu▫ā▫i▫ohu mūṛe ih sir ṯerai lekẖ pa▫i▫ā. ||10||

(Papai) by the letter Papaa: (Too’n) you (palach-i rahia) remain engrossed (parpanch-i) in machinations for transitory gains and so will not (paar-i paiaa) get across the world-ocean, o fool, – shall keep reincarnating.

(Ih-u) this is (leykh-u paiaa) written (sir-i) on your head, i.e. it is based on past deeds; (sachai) the Eternal has (aap-i) IT-self (khuaaiohu) caused you stray, i.e. this natural. 10.

Bẖabẖai bẖavjal dubohu mūṛe mā▫i▫ā vicẖ galṯān bẖa▫i▫ā.   Gur parsādī eko jāṇai ek gẖaṛī mėh pār pa▫i▫ā. ||11||

(Bhabhai) by the letter Bhabhaa: You (bhaiaa) are (galtaan-u) lost (vich-i) in transitory pleasures of (maaia) the world-play and (dduboh-u) drowning (bhavjal-i) in the world-ocean – of vices.

Remember, one who (gurparsaadi) with the guru’s grace/guidance, (jaanai) recognizes (eyko) the One Almighty – and lives by Divine virtues and commands, s/he (paar-i paiaa) gets across the world ocean, i.e. overcomes vices, in (eyk = one) a (gharri = short period) moment, i.e. does not have to perform rituals and worships etc. 11

(Vavai) by the letter Vavaa: You (aaeeaa = came) received (vaari = turn) the opportunity – in human birth to find the Creator, but (moorrey) o fool, (tudh-u) you have forgotten (vaasdeo = master of universe) the all-pervasive Master.

There is still time to make amends; o fool, you will not (lahsah-i) get (eyh) this (veyla = time) opportunity (phir-i) again and will (vas-i paiaa) come under control (kai) of, i.e. will be taken by, (jam) the agent of Divine justice – who will torture and send you for rebirth. 12.

(Jhajhai) by the letter Jhajhaa: You will (kadey na) never (jhoorey) repent, if (too’n) you (sun-i) listen to and (vikhaa = step, walk) act on (updeys-u) the teachings of (satigur) the true guru.

There is (nahi koee) none (baajhagu) except the true guru – who can guide; (nigurey) one without the guru has (bura) a bad (naau = name) reputation – is looked down upon in life and in Divine court. 13.

(Dhadhai) by the letter Dhadhaa: (Varaj-i) prevent the mind from (dhaavat) wandering and (rakh-u = keep) hold it back; (nidhaan = treasure) the most sublime treasure of Divine virtues (paiaa) lies (anatar-i) within (teyrai) yourself.

(Har-i ras-u) Divine elixir of virtues is a life giving; one who (hovah-i) becomes (gurmukh-i) a follower of the guru’s the teachings, (peevah-i) drinks it, i.e. lives by Divine virtues; s/he (khaah-i paiaa) keeps eating/drinking (juga jugantar-i) in all ages i.e. they act as guide in life and accompany to the hereafter. 14.

(Gagai) by the letter Gagaa: (Moorrey) o foolish person, if you wish to find the Almighty, (gobind-u) the Master of the world, (chit-i kar-i) keep in mind – IT’s commands and live by them; (kinai na) no one has ever (paaiaa) found IT (gali) by mere talk – cleverness.

For this, (vasaaey = cause to dwell) keep (hirdai) in mind (charan) the feet of the guru – submit to his teachings; your (pichhley) past (gunah) transgressions will be (bakhas-i laiaa) forgiven, i.e. you will give them up, and the Master will reveal IT-self to you. 15.

Hāhai har kathā būjẖ ṯūʼn mūṛe ṯā saḏā sukẖ ho▫ī.   Manmukẖ paṛėh ṯeṯā ḏukẖ lāgai viṇ saṯgur mukaṯ na ho▫ī. ||16||

(Haahai) by the letter Haahaa: (Boojh-u) understand (kathaa = discourse on praises) the virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty, – and live by them –, (ta) then you will (sadaa) ever (hoee) have (sukh-u) peace and happiness in this life, and attain union of the soul with the Creator on death.

One who (parrah-i = is put) sets out on a path (manmukh-i) by him/herself (na hoee) is not (mukat-i) emancipated from vices and (dukh laagai) suffers the pain of separation from the Almighty, and is put in cycles of births and deaths. 16.

Rārai rām cẖiṯ kar mūṛe hirḏai jinĥ kai rav rahi▫ā.   Gur parsādī jinĥī rām pacẖẖāṯā nirguṇ rām ṯinĥī būjẖ lahi▫ā. ||17||

(Raarai) by the letter Raaraa: (Chit kar-i = remember) recall virtues and commands of (raam-u) the all-pervasive Master in the company of those (jinh) in whose (hirdai) mind IT (rav-i rahia) is ever present.

(Jinhi) those, who (gur parsaadi) with the guru’s grace/guidance, (pachhaata) recognize the virtues of (raam-u) the all-pervasive Master, they (boojh laiaa) recognize the presence of (nirgun) formless Master within. 17.

O Almighty, (teyra) Your (ant-u = limits) extent (na jaai) cannot (lakhia) be known; You are (akath-u) beyond description, and (na jaaee) cannot be (kathia) described.

(Jinh) those who (milia) find (satigur-u) the true Guru and follow his teachings, (tinh ka) their (leykha) account (nibrria) is settled, i.e. they are left with no shortcomings and unite with the Almighty, says Nanak the third. 18.
