ਰਾਗੁ ਬੈਰਾੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਘਰੁ ੧ ਦੁਪਦੇ   ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Rāg bairāṛī mėhlā 4 gẖar 1 ḏupḏe  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Bairaarree, (dupadey) with two stanzas each, (ghar-u 1) to be sung to the first beat.  Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

ਸੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ॥ ਰਿਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਭਜੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sun man akath kathā har nām.  Riḏẖ buḏẖ siḏẖ sukẖ pāvahi bẖaj gurmaṯ har rām rām. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (man) human mind, (har-i) the Almighty is (akath) hard to describe; but we may know IT by (sun-i) listening to (kathaa) narration of IT’s (naam) virtues.

People (paavah-i) get (sukh) happiness by attaining (ridh-i, sidh-i) occult powers and (budh-i) wisdom/knowledge, but one who follows (gurmat-i) the guru’s teachings, is happy (bhaj-u) to remember and practice virtues of (raam raam) the all-pervasive (har-i) the Almighty.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਨਾਨਾ ਖਿਆਨ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਜਸੁ ਊਤਮ ਖਟ ਦਰਸਨ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਸੰਕਰ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਿ ਤੇਤੀਸ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਮਰਮਾਮ ॥੧॥

Nānā kẖi▫ān purān jas ūṯam kẖat ḏarsan gāvahi rām.  Sankar kroṛ ṯeṯīs ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫o nahī jāni▫o har marmām. ||1||

 

(Naana) numerous (khiaan) epics, Puraanas, (khatt = six, darsan = philosophy) the six Shastras, they all (gaavah-i = sing) praise (ootam) the sublime (jas-u = glory) virtues of (raam) the all-pervasive Master.

Shankar and (teytees = thirty three, crorr-i = ten million) three hundred thirty million Hindu gods (dhiaaio = pay attention) try but cannot (jaanio) know (marmaam) mysteries of (har-i) the Almighty. 1.

 

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਗਣ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਭ ਗਾਵਤ ਜੇਤ ਉਪਾਮ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ॥੨॥੧॥

Sur nar gaṇ ganḏẖarab jas gāvahi sabẖ gāvaṯ jeṯ upām.  Nānak kirpā karī har jin ka▫o ṯe sanṯ bẖale har rām. ||2||1||

 

And, (jeyt) whose (upaam) glories (nar = men/persons, sur-i = like gods) virtuous people, (gan) servants of the gods, (gandhrab) singers at the gods’ habitat, (sabh) all (gaavah-i = sing) praise.

Those (jin kau) on whom (har-i) the Almighty (kari) bestows (kripa) grace, (tey) they are (bhal-e) good (sant) saints of (raam) the all-pervasive (har-i) Almighty, says fourth Nanak. 2. 1.

ਬੈਰਾੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਮਨ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਇਓ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨੀਕੋ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦਿਵਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bairāṛī mėhlā 4.  Man mil sanṯ janā jas gā▫i▫o.  Har har raṯan raṯan har nīko gur saṯgur ḏān divā▫i▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Bairaarree. Those who (mil-i = meet) find company of (sant janaa) the seekers, i.e. join holy congregation, and (gaaio) sing (jas-u) glory, i.e. praise virtues of the Almighty;

(Gur-i) the great (satigur-i) true guru (divaaio) gives (daan-u) the benediction of awareness of (ratan-u = jewel) valuable virtues of (har-i har-i) Almighty; the (ratan-u = jewel) virtues of the Almighty are (neeko) sublime of all. 1.

ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਵਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਾਇਓ ॥ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਪੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਵਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਤੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਓ ॥੧॥

Ŧis jan ka▫o man ṯan sabẖ ḏeva▫o jin har har nām sunā▫i▫o.  Ḏẖan mā▫i▫ā sampai ṯis ḏeva▫o jin har mīṯ milā▫i▫o. ||1||

 

I shall (deyvau = give) dedicate my (man = mind) thoughts and (tan-u = body) deeds, (sabh-u) everything, (kau) to (tis-u) that (jan) person (jin-i) who (sunaaio) relates to me (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty.

I shall (deyvau) give my (dhan-u maaia) wealth and (sampai) belongings to (tis-u) that person (jin-i) who (milaaio = causes to meet) leads me to find my (meet-u) friend (har-i) Almighty – who is already within me. 1.

 

ਖਿਨੁ ਕਿੰਚਿਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੀ ਜਗਦੀਸਰਿ ਤਬ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਧਿਆਇਓ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਵਾਇਓ ॥੨॥੨॥

Kẖin kicẖinṯ kirpā karī jagḏīsar ṯab har har har jas ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫o.  Jan Nānak ka▫o har bẖete su▫āmī ḏukẖ ha▫umai rog gavā▫i▫o. ||2||2||

 

When the Almighty (jagdeesar-i) Master of the universe (kar-i) bestows (kinchit) a bit of (kripa) grace (khin-u) for a moment, (tab) then one (dhiaaio) pays attention to (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating  (jas-u = glory) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. with a little motivation from within one starts living by Divine virtues and commands, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 2. 2.

Note: In the Shabad below, the fourth Guru says that a seeker/devotee praises, and emulates Divine virtues and obeys Divine commands. If someone slanders him/her, s/he does not change his/her nature. S/he believes it is the Almighty who makes people speak and act the way they do, and does not therefore retaliate, with the faith that the Almighty always sorts things out.

 

ਬੈਰਾੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਨਿੰਦ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਗੁਨੁ ਨ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bairāṛī mėhlā 4.  Har jan rām nām gun gāvai.  Je ko▫ī ninḏ kare har jan kī apunā gun na gavāvai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Bairaarree.  (Jan) a devotee/seeker of (har-i) the Almighty (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates Naam, (gun) the virtues – and obeys commands – of (raam) the all-pervasive Master.

(Jey) if (koee) someone (karey = does, nind/ninda = slander, ki = of) slanders (jan) the devotee of the Almighty, s/he does not (gavaavai = lose) give up his/her (gun-u) virtue of commitment to Naam, i.e. living by Divine virtues. 1.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

Jo kicẖẖ kare so āpe su▫āmī har āpe kār kamāvai.  Har āpe hī maṯ ḏevai su▫āmī har āpe bol bulāvai. ||1||

 

The devotee is of the firm belief that; (jo kichh-u) whatever someone (karey) does (su) that (suaami) the Master (aapey) IT-self does; (har-i) the Almighty IT-self (kamaavai) performs every (kaar) action – through the creatures, being in them.

(Har-i) the Almighty suaami) Master (aapey) IT-self (deyvai) gives (mat-i = counsel) the sense and (bol-i) speaks when IT (bulaavai) causes the creature to speak. 1.

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਧਾਤੂ ਪੰਚ ਆਪਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਆਪੇ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਝਗਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੩॥

Har āpe pancẖ ṯaṯ bisthārā vicẖ ḏẖāṯū pancẖ āp pāvai.  Jan Nānak saṯgur mele āpe har āpe jẖagar cẖukẖāvai. ||2||3||

 

(Har-i) the Almighty (aapey) IT-self, made (bisthaara = expanse) creation/creatures with (panch) five (tat-u) elements – earth, water, air, fire and space, and (aap-i) IT-self (paavai) put (panch) the five (dhaatoo) qualities  in the creatures – tolerance of the earth, cleanliness of water, equal treatment of all by air, providing warmth like fire, being open to all like space

And IT-self (meyley) leads to (satigur-u) the true guru to follow his guidance, and IT-self (chukaavai) ends (jhagar-u) conflicts, i.e. helps the devotee overcome the vices, and hence the strife of having to combat vices, says (jan) humble fourth Nanak. 2. 3.

 

Note: The pronoun ‘IT’ has been used for God because God has no physical form and is gender-neutral.

Bairāṛī mėhlā 4.  Jap man rām nām nisṯārā.  Kot kotanṯar ke pāp sabẖ kẖovai har bẖavjal pār uṯārā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Bairaarree. O my (man) mind, (jap-i) recount and emulate (naam-u) virtues of (raam) the all-pervasive Almighty; this (nistaara = ferries across the night) the transitory world, i.e. one is not born again.

Living by Naam one (khovai = loses) gets rid of the effect of (paap) transgressions (key) of (kott kottantar) millions of past births and (har-i) the Almighty (utaara) causes to land (paar-i) on the far shore of, i.e. ferries across (bhavjal) the world-ocean – and not to be reborn. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰਿ ਬਸਤ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬਸਤ ਕਛੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਧਾ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

Kā▫i▫ā nagar basaṯ har su▫āmī har nirbẖa▫o nirvair nirankārā.  Har nikat basaṯ kacẖẖ naḏar na āvai har lāḏẖā gur vīcẖārā. ||1||

 

(Kaaiaa) the body is like (nagar-i = town) habitat in which (har-i) the Almighty (suaami) Master (basat) abides, but is (nirankaar) Formless – not seen; IT is (nirbhau = fearless) answerable to none, being Supreme, and (nirvair-u = without enmity) is not against anyone.

(Har-i) the Almighty (basat) dwells (nikatt-i) near/within but is (kachh-u na) not (nadir-i aavai) seen; IT (laadhaa) is found within (veechaara) by understanding teachings of the guru. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਰਾਫੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਹੀਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕੀਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਹਾਝੇ ਸੋ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਚਾ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੨॥੪॥

Har āpe sāhu sarāf raṯan hīrā har āp kī▫ā pāsārā.  Nānak jis kirpā kare so har nām vihājẖe so sāhu sacẖā vaṇjārā. ||2||4||

 

The Almighty is (aapey) IT-self (saahu = financier) the source of funds, (saraaf-u) the jeweler as well as (ratan) the jewel and (heera) gem; IT-self (keeaa = made, paasaara = expanse) made the creation, i.e. is IT-self the virtues and commands as well as their source by which the creatures are to conduct themselves.

One (jis-u) on whom IT (kripa karey) is kind, (su) that person (vihaajhey) acquires awareness of (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands; (so) s/he becomes one who (sachaa = true) has righteous (vanjaara = trader) dealings/conduct in life and (saahu) the source of virtues for others to follow, says fifth Nanak. 2. 4.

Bairāṛī mėhlā 4.  Jap man har niranjan nirankārā.  Saḏā saḏā har ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai sukẖ▫ḏāṯa jā kā anṯ na pārāvārā. ||1||

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Bairaarree. O my (man) mind, (jap-i = remember) be conscious of virtues and commands of (niranjan-u) the impeccable/unstained (nirankaara) formless (har-i) Almighty.

We should (sadaa sadaa) forever (dhiaaeeai) pay attention to virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty (ja ka = whose) who has no (ant-u) bounds or (paaravaara) far end, i.e. is infinite; (sukhdaata = giver of comfort) this gives comfort. 1.

ਅਗਨਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਉਦਰ ਮੰਝਾਰਾ ॥ ਸੋ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਛਡਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

Agan kunt mėh uraḏẖ liv lāgā har rākẖai uḏar manjẖārā.  So aisā har sevhu mere man har anṯ cẖẖadāvaṇhārā. ||1||

 

The fetus is (urdh) upside-down state (mah-i) in (agan-i = fire) the heat of (kuntt = chamber) womb, and exists (liv laaga = absorbed) submitting to Divine will and (har-i) the Almighty (raakhai) protects it (manjhaara) in (udar) the womb.

(Meyrey) my (man) mind, (seyvh-u = serve) obey (su aisa) such a (har-i) Master who (chhaddavanhaara) delivers (ant-i) at the end. 1.

 

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਸਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥੫॥

Jā kai hirḏai basi▫ā merā har har ṯis jan ka▫o karahu namaskārā.  Har kirpā ṯe pā▫ī▫ai har jap Nānak nām aḏẖārā. ||2||5||

 

We should (karah-u = do) pay (namaskaara) obeisance – and follow the example (kau) of (tis-u) that (jan) person (ja kai) in whose (hirdai) mind (har-i har-i) the Almighty Master (meyra = my) of all (basia = dwells) is remembered,

But (jap-u) remembrance of (har-i) the Almighty (paaeeai = obtained) comes with (kirpa) grace 0f the Almighty; Naam then becomes (adhaara = support) the guide for life – with the guru’s guidance, says fourth Nanak. 2. 5.

Note: One who lives by Naam, i.e. sincerely performs the role one has been allotted for life – by way of being placed in the faith, country/family/job – achieves success in life and succeeds in attaining union with the Almighty at the end. For the latter one should have single-minded faith in the Almighty and give up reliance on any other metod/gods/goddesses/persons, says the fourth Guru in this Shabad.

 

ਬੈਰਾੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਤ ਧਿਆਇ ॥ ਜੋ ਇਛਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bairāṛī mėhlā 4.  Jap man har har nām niṯ ḏẖi▫ā▫e.  Jo icẖẖėh so▫ī fal pāvahi fir ḏūkẖ na lāgai ā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Bairaarree. O my mind, (jap-i) recount (naam-u) virtues of (har-i har-i) the Almighty and (nit) ever (dhiaaey) pay attention to them – as guide in life.

Then (jo) what you (ichhah-i) wish, you will (paavah-i) obtain (phal-u = fruit) fulfillment of (soi) that; (dookh) distress shall not (aaey) come and (laagai = touch) visit you (phir-i) again. 1.

ਸੋ ਜਪੁ ਸੋ ਤਪੁ ਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਪੂਜਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਇ ॥ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਭ ਝੂਠੀ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਸਰਿ ਸਭ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

So jap so ṯap sā baraṯ pūjā jiṯ har si▫o parīṯ lagā▫e.  Bin har parīṯ hor parīṯ sabẖ jẖūṯẖī ik kẖin mėh bisar sabẖ jā▫e. ||1||

 

 (So) that is the real (jap-u) recitation of mantras, (tap-u) austerity, (brat) resolution/fasting and (pooja) worship by (jit-u) which one (lagaaey) develops (preet-i) affection (siau) for (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. God’s obedience is the way.

(Sabh) all (hor) other (preet-i) love (bin-u) except with the Almighty is (jhootthi = false) im-permanent and (bisar-i jaaey) is forgotten (mah-i) in (ik) one (khin) moment – on death, i.e. only living by will of the Almighty accompanies the soul here and in the hereafter. 1.

 

ਤੂ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਸਰਬ ਕਲ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਛਡਾਇ ॥੨॥੬॥

Ŧū be▫anṯ sarab kal pūrā kicẖẖ kīmaṯ kahī na jā▫e.  Nānak saraṇ ṯumĥārī har jī▫o bẖāvai ṯivai cẖẖadā▫e. ||2||6||

 

O Almighty, (too) You are (beyant) bound-less, (poora = full of) have (sarab) all (kal) powers; Your (keemat-i) worth (na jaaey) cannot (kahi) be told/appraised, i.e. Your powers are beyond measure.

(Jeeo) revered (har-i) Master, I have placed myself in (tumhaari) Your (saran-i) care, please (chhaddaaey) deliver me from attachment to vices in the world-play, by enabling me to live (tivai) the way as You (bhaavai) please, says fourth Nanak. 2. 6.

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਇਓ ॥ ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਦੂਖ ਗਵਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sanṯ janā mil har jas gā▫i▫o.  Kot janam ke ḏūkẖ gavā▫i▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

One who (gaaio) sings (jas-u) glory of (har-i) the Almighty (mil-i = together with, sant kanaa = seekers) in holy congregation, (gavaaio = loses) banishes the influence of (dookh) wrong-doings of (kott-i = crore/ten million) millions of past (janam) births. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਜੋ ਚਾਹਤ ਸੋਈ ਮਨਿ ਪਾਇਓ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਿਵਾਇਓ ॥੧॥

Jo cẖāhaṯ so▫ī man pā▫i▫o.  Kar kirpā har nām divā▫i▫o. ||1||

 

And (jo) what s/he (chaahat) wishes (man-i) in the mind, (soee) that s/he (paaio) obtains.

(Har-i) the Almighty (divaaio) gives awareness of (naam-u) IT’s virtues and commands, i.e. s/he is bestowed Divine grace to find Naam within. 1.

 

ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਾਈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥੧॥੭॥

Sarab sūkẖ har nām vadā▫ī.  Gur parsāḏ Nānak maṯ pā▫ī. ||2||1||7||

 

(Vaddaaee) praising and emulating (naam-i) virtues and commands of the Almighty, – one refrains from evil; this results in obtaining (sarab) all (sookh) comforts – here and in the hereafter.

(Mat-i) understanding of Naam (paaee) is obtained (prasaad-i) with grace/guidance of (gur) the guru, says fifth Nanak. 2. 1. 7.
