Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. O (har-i) Almighty, (tumhaarey) Your (sant) saints are (bhaagatthrrey) fortunate; they are those (jinh) who have (dhan-u) the wealth of (naama) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty in their (ghar-i = in house) minds.

(Seyee) they are (gani = counted) seen as (aaey) having come and led lives (parvaan-u = approved) acceptable to the Almighty; (tina key) their (kaama) actions are (saphal) fruitful, i.e. they attain union with the Almighty which is the objective of human birth. 1.

O (meyrey) my (raam) Almighty Master, (hau) I (bal-i jaai = am sacrifice) adore (jan = servants) the devotees of (har-i) the Almighty.

A shall (kar-i) make (chavar-u) fly swash of my (keysa) hair, (dhulaava) wave over the devotees respectfully and (laai) apply (dhoorr-i) dust of their (charan) feet (mukh-i) on my face, i.e. pay obeisance and follow their example. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

They (naahi) are not subject to (duhoo) both (janam) rebirths and (maran = death) succumbing to vices; such (jan) devotees (aaey) are born (parupkaari) to do good to others.

They (dey) give (daan = alms) the benediction of guidance for (jeea = life) not succumbing to vices and (lain-i) put people on (bhagti) devotion, and thus (lain milaaey) cause to meet (siau) with, i.e. find (har-i) the Almighty within. 2.

They accept (amar-u) commands of (sachaa) the Eternal and (paatsaahi = kingdom) authority only (sachi = eternal) of the Eternal; they (raatey = imbued) have love only (seyti) for (sachey) the Eternal.

They have (sachaa = true) lasting (sukh-u) peace, and (vaddiaaee) glorify virtues (sachi) of the Eternal; such people are (jaatey = known) recognized (tin-i = that) by One (jis key) whose they (sey) are, i.e. the Almighty recognizes the devotees. 3.

This is (beynanti) the supplication of fifth Nanak (paas-i) with (prabh) the Almighty: May I (paava) get (deykhan-u = see) to meet (teyrey) Your (jan = servants) devotees – and follow their example. 4. 7. 54.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. O (paarbrahm) Supreme Being, You are (parmeysar) the Supreme Master and (satigur) true guru; You (karnaihaara) are capable to do everything (aapey) Yourself – including through the creatures.

(Seyvak-u = servant) the devotee (maagai) asks for (dhoorr-i) dust of Your (charan) feet, i.e. ability to be at Your feet and obey You; I (balihaara = am sacrifice) humbly wish (kau) for (teyrey) Your (darsan) vision, i.e. to know Your virtues and commands – to live by them. 1.

O (meyrey) my (raai = king) Sovereign (raam) Almighty Master, we (raheeai) live (tio) that way (jio) as You (raakhah-i) keep, i.e. everything happens by Your will.

When it (bhaavai) pleases You, then You (japaavah-i) cause us to remember and practice Your (naam-u) virtues and commands; whatever is (ditaa) given (teyra = your) by You, we (laheeai) receive that and is (sukh-u = comfort) good for us, i.e. makes me happy. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

People look for (mukat-i) emancipation from vices and rebirth, (bhugat-i) enjoying worldly pleasures and (jugat-i = method) the way of righteous living; for me these are done though living by (teyri) Your (seyva = service) commands; but only that person does this (jis-u) whom (too’n) Your (karaah-i = cause to do) motivate.

(Baikuntth-u) heaven, which people look forward to go to, is (tahaa) there  (jahaa) where (teyra) Your (keertan-u) virtues are praised, i.e. in holy congregation; and (too’n) You (aapey) Your-self (laaih-i) put people on this path of (sardha) devotion/create faith. 2.

O (merey) my Almighty (satigur) true Guru, You are (daiaala) kind to (deen) the hapless; I yearn (dhoey dhoey) to wash Your (kamal) lotus (charan) feet and (peeva) drink the wash, i.e. wish to know and assimilate Your virtues and commands. 3.

I (kurbaan-u  jaaee = am sacrifice) adore (us-u) that (suhaavi = pleasant) blessed (veyla) moment (jit-u) when I (aaiaa) came to (tumrai) Your (duaarai) door, i.e. since I have submitted to Your virtues and commands.

(Prabh) the Master (bhaey) was (kripaala) kind (kau) to me and I (paaiaa) found (poora) the perfect (satigur-u) true guru – who led me to IT, says fifth Nanak. 4. 8. 55.

Note: We are born with instructions of the Creator on our role in life, but forget and stray, succumbing to temptations in the world-play. Some devoted souls remember the Creator’s commands and live by them. They acknowledge that everything they have is owed to the Master. In this Shabad the fifth Guru supplicates to the Almighty to enable finding, and following the example of, such devotees.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. O Almighty, there is (mahaa) great (ananda) bliss in (tudh-u) Your (aaey) coming (chit-i) to mind – when one is doing something because temptations then cannot affect; one (jis-u) who forgets You, (so) that person (mar-i jaaey = dies) succumbs to temptations in the world-play.

But only one (oopar-i) on (jis-u) whom You (hovah-i) are (daiaal-u = compassionate) kind to motivate, (so) that person (dhaiaaey) pays attention to (tudh-u = you) Your virtues and commands – and overcomes temptations. 1.

(Meyrey) my (sahib) Master, (too’n) You are (maan-u) the honour of (mai) me, (nimaani) the honour-less one.

I (kari) make this (ardaas-i) supplication (aagai) before You (apney = own) my (prabh) Master; may I (sun-i sun-i = listening) be conscious in thought and deed of (treyri) Your (baani = words) commands and (jeeva = live) thus not succumb to temptations on life. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

May I (hova) be (dhoorr-i) the dust of the feet, i.e. serve and follow the example of, of (teyrey) Your (jan = servants) devotees; I shall (bal-i jaaee = be sacrifice) give up ego and humbly seek awareness of (teyrey) Your (darsan = vision/philosophy) virtues and commands – to be my guide in life.

May I (dhaari) keep (amrit) the life-giving (bachan) words/guidance of the devotees (ridai ur-i) in mind; but I can (paaee) find their (sang-u) company (tey) with (tau) Your (kirpa) kindness/grace. 2.

Anṯar kī gaṯ ṯuḏẖ pėh sārī ṯuḏẖ jevad avar na ko▫ī.  Jis no lā▫e laihi so lāgai bẖagaṯ ṯuhārā so▫ī. ||3||

I can (saari = reach) mention (gat-i) the state of my (antar = inner-self) mind only (pah-i) to (tudh-u) You; for, there is (na koee) none (avar-u) other (jeyvadd-u) as great as (tudh-u) You, who can provide solace.

One (jis no) whom You (laaey = engage) motivate, (soee) only that person becomes (tuhaara) Your (bhagat-u) devotee – lives by Your virtues and commands. 3.

With (duey) both (kar) hands (jorr-i) folded, i.e. humbly, I (maagau) ask for this (ik-u) one (daana = alms) benediction – of awareness of Naam, but can (paava) obtain (sahib-i) at Your, the Master’s (tutthai = pleased) pleasure.

May I, fifth Nanak (araadhey) remember the Master (saas-i saas-i) with every breath and (gaava = sing) praise and live by (gun) Divine virtues (aatth pahar = eight x three hour periods) round the clock. 4. 9. 56.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi. O (suaami) Master, one (oopar-i) over (jis key) whose (sir) head (too’n) You are there, i.e. who acknowledges You as the protector – and obeys You – (so) that person (kaisa = how?) cannot (paavai) suffer (dukh-u) grief.

But a person (maata) inebriated with (mad) the intoxicant of (maaiaa) attachment to the world-play (na jaanai = does not know) does not know how (bol-i = say) to acknowledge, You; inevitability of (marna) death, does not (aavai) come to his/her (cheet-i) mind. 1.

O (meyrey) my (raai = king) Sovereign (raam) Almighty Master, (too’n) You belong to (santaa) the devotees and (sant) the devotees are (teyrey) Yours.

There is (kichh-u naahi = not any) nothing to (bhau) fear by (teyrey) Your (sevak = servant) devotee; (jam) the agent of Divine justice does not (aavai) come (neyrey) near him/her. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

O (suaami) Master, (jo) those who are (raatey = dyed) imbued with (teyrey) Your (rang-i) love, i.e. those who emulate Your virtues, (tinh ka) their (dukh-u) distress of (janam) births and (maran) deaths (naasa = runs) is obviated.

(Na koee) no one can (mettai = erase) countermand (teyri) Your (bakhas) grace/benediction; these are (dilaasa) the comforting words (ka) of (satigur) the true guru. 2.

Those who (dhiaain-i) pay attention to, and (araadhah-i) remember (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands (aatth pahar) round the clock, (paain-i) obtain (sukh-u) peace of mind as (phal = fruit) reward.

By being in (teyri) Your (saran-i = sanctuary) care and with (bharvaasai) confidence (teyrai = your) in You, we(lai saadhah-i) control/overcome (panch) the five (dustt = enemies) vices – of lust, anger, greed, attachment to the world-play and vanity – which are impediments on the path to the You. 3.

O Almighty, I do not (jaana = know) have (giaan-u) knowledge of the scriptures, (dhiaan-u) how to focus in meditation or of (kichh-u) any (karam) religious deeds; I do not (jaana) know (teyri) Your (saar) value – what and how powerful You are and what would please You.

I found Guru Nanak who is (vaddaa) greater (tey) than (sabh) all, i.e. the greatest Guru, who has (raakhi) preserved (meyri) my (kal) capability, i.e. enabled me to remember You. 4. 10. 57.

Note: The human soul yearns to unite with the Almighty and with that aim one adopts many methods like performing rituals, observing superstitions and worship of gods/goddesses. These provide satisfaction of doing something tangible but cannot bring lasting peace to the mind. For this, the guru teaches to emulate Divine virtues and obey Divine commands. This kills craving and brings peace when done sincerely with the guru’s guidance. That is how God is experienced within which manifests by being at peace with the self.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Soohi: (Tiaag-i) forsaking (sagal) all others, I have (aaiaa) come to Your (gur) great (sarni) sanctuary; please (raakhau) save me o (raakhanhaarey) protector, my Master.

You are (daiaala) the kind (gurdeyv) great guru; (kar-i kirpa) kindly enable me to (nit) ever (gaava = sing) praise and emulate Your (gun) virtues. 1.

We should (dhiaaeeai) pay attention to – virtues and commands of – (apna = own) our (prabh-u) Master (aatth = eight x pahar = three hour) twenty four hours, i.e. round the clock in all activities, (prasaad-i = with grace) with guidance of (gur) the guru in order to (tareeai = swim) get across (bhau/bhav = world) the world-ocean – overcome temptations, unite with the Creator and not be reborn.

We should (tiaag-i) give up (aap-u = self) ego, (hoeeai) be (reyna) dust of the feet of (sabh) all, i.e. practice humility, and (iau = this way) thus (mareeai) die (jeevtiaa) while alive, i.e. give up acting by self will like a dead person. 2.

(Sagal) all (manorath) wishes in the mind (tis key) of that person are (pooran) fulfilled on (jis-u) whom (prabh-u) the Master (aapey) IT-self (daiaa karey) is kind, i.e. one who receives Divine grace which in turn is based on deeds. 3.
