ਰਾਗੁ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ਘਰੁ ੧੨  ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Rāg bilāval mėhlā 5 asatpaḏī gẖar 12  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raag Bilaaval, (asttpadee) with stanzas of eight lines each, (ghar-u 12) to be sung to the twelfth beat: Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace:

 

ਉਪਮਾ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਕਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਕਹੀ ॥ ਤਜਿ ਆਨ ਸਰਣਿ ਗਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Upmā jāṯ na kahī mere parabẖ kī upmā jāṯ na kahī.  Ŧaj ān saraṇ gahī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(Upma) comparison (ki) of (prabh) the Master (merey = my) of all cannot (jaat = be, kahi = told) be made – with anyone; it cannot be made.

So I (taj-i) gave up reliance on (aan) others and (gahi = held) taken IT’s (saran-i) sanctuary, i.e. have placed myself in Divine care and obedience. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਅਪਾਰ ॥ ਹਉ ਜਾਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਤਾਹਿ ॥ ਤਜਿ ਆਨ ਕਤਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

Parabẖ cẖaran kamal apār.  Ha▫o jā▫o saḏ balihār.  Man parīṯ lāgī ṯāhi.  Ŧaj ān kaṯėh na jāhi. ||1||

 

(Hau) I (sad) ever (jaau = am, balihaar = sacrifice to) acknowledge and respect (kamal = lotus, charan = feet) virtues and commands of (apaar) the Infinite Master – as guide for life.

I (laagi = bear) have (preet-i) affection (taah-i) for them; I will not (taj-i) forsake the Master and (jaah-i = go) look to (katah = anywhere) anyone (aan) else. 1.

 

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਸਨਾ ਕਹਨ ॥ ਮਲ ਪਾਪ ਕਲਮਲ ਦਹਨ ॥ ਚੜਿ ਨਾਵ ਸੰਤ ਉਧਾਰਿ ॥ ਭੈ ਤਰੇ ਸਾਗਰ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

Har nām rasnā kahan.  Mal pāp kalmal ḏahan.  Cẖaṛ nāv sanṯ uḏẖār.  Bẖai ṯare sāgar pār. ||2||

 

One who (kahan = utters) praises (naam) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty with his/her (rasna) tongue – and lives by them; (dahn = burns) overcomes the tendency for (paap) transgressions (kal-mal = dirt of kal-i/conflicts) duality.

S/he (charr-i) boards (naav) the boat of guidance of (sant) the guru and (udhaar-i = kept above) does not drown in the sea of vices; s/he (tarey = swims) is ferried (paar-i = far shore) across (bhai/bhav) the world (saagar) ocean. 2.

 

ਮਨਿ ਡੋਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥ ਇਹ ਸੰਤ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਰੀਤਿ ॥ ਤਜਿ ਗਏ ਪਾਪ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥੩॥

Man dor parem parīṯ.  Ih sanṯ nirmal rīṯ.  Ŧaj ga▫e pāp bikār.  Har mile parabẖ nirankār. ||3||

 

His/her (man-i) mind (ddor-i = string) is guided by (preym) love and (preet-i) affection for the Almighty; this is (nirmal = clean) the virtuous (reet-i = practice) way of (sant) the seekers.

They (taj-i = leave, gaey) leave (paap = sins) transgressions and (bikaar) vices and (miley) remain absorbed in (nirankaar) the Formless (har-i) Almighty Master. 3.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੇਖੀਐ ਬਿਸਮਾਦ ॥ ਚਖਿ ਅਨਦ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਾਦ ॥ ਨਹ ਡੋਲੀਐ ਇਤ ਊਤ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚੀਤ ॥੪॥

Parabẖ pekẖī▫ai bismāḏ.  Cẖakẖ anaḏ pūran sāḏ.  Nah dolī▫ai iṯ ūṯ.  Parabẖ base har har cẖīṯ. ||4||

 

One (bismaad) is wonder-struck (peykheeai = seeing) obtaining vision – of virtues and powers of (prabh) the Almighty; (chakh-i = tasting) having (pooran = perfect) the profound (saad = tast) experience of living by Divine virtues and commands creates (anad/anand) bliss. One does not then (ddoleeai) waver (it) here and (oot) there, i.e. one does not stray from – living by Hukam, i.e. Divine virtues and commands, when (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating virtues of (prabh) the Almighty (basey = abide in, cheet = mind) are kept in mind. 4.

 

ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਨਾਹਿ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥ ਨਿਤ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥ ਤੇ ਜਮੁ ਨ ਪੇਖਹਿ ਨੈਨ ॥ ਸੁਨਿ ਮੋਹੇ ਅਨਹਤ ਬੈਨ ॥੫॥

Ŧinĥ nāhi narak nivās.  Niṯ simar parabẖ guṇṯās.  Ŧe jam na pekẖėh nain.  Sun mohe anhaṯ bain. ||5||

 

For those who (nit) ever (simar-i) keep in mind – virtues and commands of – (guntaas-u = treasure of virtues) the Almighty, (tinh) they are not (nivaas-u = live) put in (narak = hell) cycles of births and deaths,

(Tey = they) their (nain) eyes do not (peykhah-i) see, i.e. they are not subject to the authority of, (jam-u) the agent of Divine justice; they (moh-e) are fascinated (sun-i) listening to (anhat) the unstruck (bain) music, i.e. their minds are tuned to Divine messages, and they live by them. 5.

 

ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੂਰ ਗੁਪਾਲ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਗਤ ਵਸਿ ਦਇਆਲ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਗਮ ਲਹਹਿ ਨ ਭੇਵ ॥ ਨਿਤ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੇਵ ॥੬॥

Har saraṇ sūr gupāl.  Parabẖ bẖagaṯ vas ḏa▫i▫āl.  Har nigam lahėh na bẖev.  Niṯ karahi mun jan sev. ||6||

 

O human being seek (saran-i = sanctuary) to be in care/obedience of (soor = warrior) the Omnipotent (har-i) Almighty (gupaal) Sustainer of the world – pray for IT’s protection; IT is (daiaal) compassionate to, and (vas-i = is under control) does what, (bhagat) the devotees ask.

(Nigam) the Vedas have not (lahah-i) found (bheyv) mysteries of (har-i) the Almighty; (mun-i jan) the saints (nit) ever (karah-i = do, seyv = service) obey IT. 6.

 

ਦੁਖ ਦੀਨ ਦਰਦ ਨਿਵਾਰ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੜੀ ਕਾਰ ॥ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਮਿਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੭॥

Ḏukẖ ḏīn ḏaraḏ nivār.  Jā kī mahā bikẖ▫ṛī kār.  Ŧā kī miṯ na jānai ko▫e.  Jal thal mahī▫al so▫e. ||7||

 

 (Dukh) distress of (deen = poor) the hapless, is (nivaar) dispelled by the Almighty whose (kaar = work) obedience is (mahaa) very (bikhrree) hard – but we must obey.

(Na koey) no one (jaanai) knows (ki = of, ta = that) IT’s (mit-i) measure – IT is Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Omniscient; (soey = that) IT is present, i.e. IT’s domain covers, (jal-i) water, (thal-i) land and (maheeal-i = between sky and land) in space. 7.

 

ਕਰਿ ਬੰਦਨਾ ਲਖ ਬਾਰ ॥ ਥਕਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਰਬਾਰ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਧੂਰਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਸਾ ਪੂਰਿ ॥੮॥੧॥

Kar banḏnā lakẖ bār.  Thak pari▫o parabẖ ḏarbār.  Parabẖ karahu sāḏẖū ḏẖūr.  Nānak mansā pūr. ||8||1||

 

(Thak-i = getting tired) having wandered – in cycles of births and deaths – for long, I have (pario) placed myself (darbaar = court) in sanctuary of (prabh) the Almighty and I (kar-i = do) pay (bandana) obeisance to IT (lakh baar) a hundred thousand (baar) times.

O (prabh) Almighty, please (karh-u) make me (dhoor-i) the dust of the feet of (saadhoo) the saints, i.e. enable me to follow their example – so that I am not reborn; please (poor-i) fulfill this (mansa) wish of mine, prays fifth Nanak. 8. 1.

Note: In this Shabad, the fifth Guru displays true love of a true devotee for the Almighty. He gives examples of deep affection as the very life. And finally requests the Almighty to enable to follow this path and unite with IT-self.

Bilāval mėhlā 5.  Parabẖ janam maran nivār.  Hār pari▫o ḏu▫ār.  Gėh cẖaran sāḏẖū sang.  Man misat har har rang.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Bilaaval. O (prabh) Almighty, please (nivaar-i) grant me freedom from (janam) births and (maran) deaths; I (haar-i = lost) failed in this in past births, and (pario) place myself in Your (duaar-i = gate) care.

I (gah-i) held (charan) feet, i.e. sought guidance, and (sang) company of (saadhoo) the saints; by which I developed (mistt) sweet (rang) love for (har-i har-i) the Almighty in (man) the mind – and came to You.

ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਲੇਹੁ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥

Kar ḏa▫i▫ā leho laṛ lā▫e.  Nānkā nām ḏẖi▫ā▫e. ||1||

 

Please (kar-i = do) show (daiaa) mercy and (leyhu laaey) attach me (larr-i) to Your scarf, i.e. enable me to follow the path to You and for that (dhiaaey) pay attention to Your (naam-u) virtues and commands. 1.

 

ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਦਇਆਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਦਇਆਲ ॥ ਜਾਚਉ ਸੰਤ ਰਵਾਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ḏīnā nāth ḏa▫i▫āl mere su▫āmī ḏīnā nāth ḏa▫i▫āl.  Jācẖa▫o sanṯ ravāl. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

O (meyrey) my (suaami) Master You are (daiaal = compassionate) the kind (naath = master) benefactor of (deen) the hapless – please help me.

(Jaachau) I seek (ravaal) dust of the feet of (sant) the saints, i.e. to follow their example. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this

 

ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੂਪ ॥ ਤਮ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਮੋਹਤ ਘੂਪ ॥ ਗਹਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ ਲੇਹੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਦੇਹੁ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਠਾਉ ॥ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੨॥

Sansār bikẖi▫ā kūp.  Ŧam agi▫ān mohaṯ gẖūp.  Gėh bẖujā parabẖ jī leho.  Har nām apunā ḏeh.  Parabẖ ṯujẖ binā nahī ṯẖā▫o.  Nānkā bal bal jā▫o. ||2||

 

(Sansaar) the world is (koop) a well of (bikhiaa) vices, i.e. human beings tempted by vices are blinded as if fallen in a well and see nothing else; they are (ghoop = deep, tam = dark) totally (agiaan) ignorant – of Divine virtues and commands – because of (mohat) being attached to the world-play.

O (ji) revered (prabh) Almighty, please (gah-i) hold my (bhujaa) arm and (leyhu) take me out of this; and (deyhu = give) impart awareness of (apna) Your (naam-u) virtues and commands; I have (nahi =no, tthaau = place) nowhere to go (binaa) except (tujh) You; I (bal-i bal-i jaau = am sacrifice) adore You, prays fifth Nanak. 2.

 

ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਧੀ ਦੇਹ ॥ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਜਨ ਹੋਵਤ ਖੇਹ ॥ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ॥ ਚਿਤ ਗੁਪਤ ਕਰਮਹਿ ਜਾਨ ॥ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਾਖਿ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਨਾਇ ॥੩॥

Lobẖ mohi bāḏẖī ḏeh.  Bin bẖajan hovaṯ kẖeh.  Jamḏūṯ mahā bẖa▫i▫ān.  Cẖiṯ gupaṯ karmėh jān.  Ḏin rain sākẖ sunā▫e.  Nānkā har sarnā▫e. ||3||

 

(Deyh = body) the human being is (baadhi = bound) possessed (moh-i) by attachments to relatives, pleasures etc and (lobh-i) greed for wealth; the soul (hovat) becomes (kheyh) ash, i.e. faces ignominy (bin-u) without (bhajan) invoking the Almighty.

(Jamdoot) the agent of Divine justice is (mahaa) very (bhaiaan) dreadful – it brutalizes the transgressors; (gupt = hidden, chit/chitr = writers) the hidden metaphoric Divine recorders (jaan) know of our (karmah-i) deeds.

And (sunaaey = tell) report (saakh-i) evidence of our deeds (din-u) day and (rain-i) night – for Divine justice; I am frightened and seek (sarnaaey = sanctuary) protection of (har-i) the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 3.

 

ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨਾ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਿ ॥ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੋਖ ਗਨੇ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਤਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਗਹਿ ਓਟ ਚਿਤਵੀ ਨਾਥ ॥
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਦੇ ਰਖੁ ਹਾਥ ॥੪॥

Bẖai bẖanjnā murār.  Kar ḏa▫i▫ā paṯiṯ uḏẖār.  Mere ḏokẖ gane na jāhi.  Har binā kaṯėh samāhi. Gėh ot cẖiṯvī nāth.  Nānkā ḏe rakẖ hāth. ||4||

 

O (muraar-i = killer of demon Mur – metaphor for) Almighty, You (bhanjna = destroy) end (bhai/bhav) rebirths – and unite the soul with You; please (kar-i = do) show (daiaa) compassion and (udhaar-i) lift this (patit) one fallen to vices – and accept for union with You, so that I am not reborn.

(Meyrey) my (dokh) faults (na jaah-i =) cannot (ganey) be counted; (katah-i) where else can I (samaah-i = enter) go (binaa) except (har-i) the Almighty. None else can save from rebirth.

I (chitvi) thought and (gahi = held) sought (ott) protection of You (naath) the Master; please (dey = give) bestow Your (haath = hand) grace and (rakh-u) save me from rebirth. 4.

 

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥ ਸਰਬ ਘਟ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਪਿਆਸ ॥ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸ ॥ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

ਵਡ ਭਾਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥

Har guṇ niḏẖe gopāl.  Sarab gẖat parṯipāl.  Man parīṯ ḏarsan pi▫ās.  Gobinḏ pūran ās.  Ik nimakẖ rahan na jā▫e.  vad bẖāg Nānak pā▫e. ||5||

 

O (har-i) Almighty, You are (nidhey) the treasure of virtues and (gopaal = sustainer of the world) provide for all. You (pratipaal = nurture) look after (sarab) all (ghattey = bodies) creatures.

I (preet-i) love You (man-i) from my heart and (piaas = thirst) yearn for Your (darsan) vision; please (pooran) fulfill my (aas) wish, o (gobind) Master of the world.

I (na jaaey) cannot (rahan-u) stay without You even for (ik) one (nikamkh) moment – I fall prey to vices when not conscious of You; it will be my (vadd) great (bhaag) fortune (paaey) to find You – please reveal Yourself to me within, prays fifth Nanak. 5.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਹੋਰ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਚੰਦ ਚਕੋਰ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨ ਜਲ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ॥ ਅਲਿ ਕਮਲ ਭਿੰਨੁ ਨ ਭੇਤੁ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਚਕਵੀ
ਸੂਰਜ ਆਸ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਚਰਨ ਪਿਆਸ ॥੬॥

Parabẖ ṯujẖ binā nahī hor.  Man parīṯ cẖanḏ cẖakor.  Ji▫o mīn jal si▫o heṯ.  Al kamal bẖinn na bẖeṯ.  Ji▫o cẖakvī sūraj ās.  Nānak cẖaran pi▫ās. ||6||

 

O (prabh) Almighty, there is (nahi hor) none else (binaa) except (tujh) You – that I can look to; I have (preet-i) affection (man-i) in mind for You like the Chakor has for (chand) the moon.

Or (meen) the fish has (heyt-u) love (siau) for (jal) water; or (al) the bumble-bee does not (bhin-u, bheyt-u = separate from) leave (kamal) the lotus flower.

Or Chakvi (aas = wish) looks forward for (sooraj) the sun to rise – so that it can see the male partner Chakva; I (piaas) long to be (charan = feet) in care of the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 6.

 

ਜਿਉ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਭਰਤ ਪਰਾਨ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਲੋਭੀਐ ਧਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਦੂਧ ਜਲਹਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਮਹਾ ਖੁਧਿਆਰਥ ਭੋਗੁ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਮਾਤ ਪੂਤਹਿ ਹੇਤੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇਤ ॥੭॥

Ji▫o ṯarun bẖaraṯ parān.  Ji▫o lobẖī▫ai ḏẖan ḏān.  Ji▫o ḏūḏẖ jalėh sanjog.  Ji▫o mahā kẖuḏẖi▫ārath bẖog.  Ji▫o māṯ pūṯėh heṯ.  Har simar Nānak neṯ. ||7||

 

(Jio) like (bharat) the husband is (praan) the very life (tarun-i) of the young woman, or (daan-u = charity) receiving (dhan-u) money is the love of (lobheeai) a greedy person.

(Jio) the way (doodh) milk and (jalah-i) water (sanjog-u) stay together; the way (bhog-u) eating is to one who is (maha) very (khudhiaarath) hungry.

(Jio) like is love of (maat) the mother (pootah-i = of the son) for the child; we should (neyt) ever (simar-i) remember (har-i) the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 7.

 

ਜਿਉ ਦੀਪ ਪਤਨ ਪਤੰਗ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਚੋਰੁ ਹਿਰਤ ਨਿਸੰਗ ॥ ਮੈਗਲਹਿ ਕਾਮੈ ਬੰਧੁ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਗ੍ਰਸਤ ਬਿਖਈ ਧੰਧੁ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਜੂਆਰ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇ ॥੮॥

Ji▫o ḏīp paṯan paṯang.  Ji▫o cẖor hiraṯ nisang.  Maiglahi kāmai banḏẖ.  Ji▫o garsaṯ bikẖ▫ī ḏẖanḏẖ.  Ji▫o jū▫ār bisan na jā▫e.  Har Nānak ih man lā▫e. ||8||

 

(Jio) like (patang) the moth (patan) falls on (deep) the lamp; the way (chor) a thief (hirat) lifts things (nisang) without hesitation.

Or is (bandh-u) the bond (maiglah-i) of the elephant and (kaamai) lust; or (bikhaee) a vicious person is (grast = held) possessed by his/her (dhandh-u = pursuit) vices.

Like (bisan-u) the vice (na jaaey) does not leave (jooaar) the gambler; we should (laaey) engage (ihu) this (man-u) mind with – living by virtues and commands of – (har-i) the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 8.

 

ਕੁਰੰਕ ਨਾਦੈ ਨੇਹੁ ॥ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕੁ ਚਾਹਤ ਮੇਹੁ ॥ ਜਨ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ॥ ਗੋਬਿਦੁ ਭਜਨਾ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ ਰਸਨਾ ਬਖਾਨੈ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ
ਦਰਸਨ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੯॥

Kurank nāḏai nehu.  Cẖāṯrik cẖāhaṯ mehu.  Jan jīvnā saṯsang.  Gobiḏ bẖajnā rang.  Rasnā bakẖānai nām.  Nānak ḏarsan ḏān. ||9||

 

(Kurank) the deer has (neyhu) love (naadai) for music – and runs to where it is playing; (chaatrik-u) the rain-bird (chaahat) wants (meyhu = rain) the raindrop to fall in its mouth.

Similarly participation in (satisang-i) holy congregation (jeevna = life) revitalizes (jan = servants) the seekers; there, they (rang-i) lovingly (bhajnaa) praise virtues of (gobid-u/gobind = master of the world) the Almighty.

 O Almighty, please give me this (daan-u = alms) benediction of Your (darsan) vision, prays fifth Nanak; that my (rasna) tongue (bakhaanai = utters) remembers (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands – and I emulate them. 9.

 

ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਸੁਨਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੇਇ ॥ ਸੋ ਸਰਬ ਫਲ ਹਰਿ ਲੇਇ ॥ ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹ ਕਰਤ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥

Gun gā▫e sun likẖ ḏe▫e.  So sarab fal har le▫e.  Kul samūh karaṯ uḏẖār.  Sansār uṯras pār.

 

One who (gaaey = sings) praises (gun) virtues of the Almighty, (sun-i) listens to them, and (likh-i) writes to (dey-i) gives, i.e. shows by practice; (so) that person (ley-i) receives (phal = fruit) the reward of finding (har-i) the Almighty, – the highest of (sarab) all rewards.

S/he (karat = does, udhaar-u = lifting) liberates (samooh = whole) all (kul = lineage) those who follow his/her example. S/he (utras-i) lands (paar-i) on far shore, i.e. gets across the world-ocean – and is not reborn.

 

ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਤਾਹਿ ॥ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਹਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੈ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥੧੦॥੨॥

Har cẖaran bohith ṯāhi.  Mil sāḏẖsang jas gāhi. Har paij rakẖai murār.  Har Nānak saran ḏu▫ār. ||10||2||

 

For him/her, (charan = feet) obedience to (har-i) Divine commands is (bohith) the ship to get across the world-ocean. S/he (mil-i = meets) joins (saadhsang-i) holy congregation to (gaah-i) sing (jas-u) praises of the Almighty – and obtain awareness of Divine virtues and commands.

(Har-i) the Almighty (muraar-i = killer of demon Mur – metaphor for) Master (rakhai) protects (paij) the honor of those, who place themselves (saran-i) in refuge (duaar-i)  at the gate/sanctuary of (har-i) the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 10.2.
