(Panch) the five (dokh = faults) vices – lust, wrath, greed, attachment to the world-play and vanity – present (mah-i) in (nagar = town) human body are (asaadh) are hard to control; but practice of Naam (karey = makes, door = far) rids his/her mind of them (khin pal-i = short period) in a moment – when s/he starts practice of Naam. 2.

Nat mėhlā 4.  Rām jap jan rāmai nām rale.  Rām nām japi▫o gur bacẖnī har ḏẖārī har kiraple. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Natt. (Jan) the devotees (jap-i) remember and practice Naam or virtues and commands of (raam) the all-pervasive Master; they (raley = joined) are united (raamai) with the Almighty (naam-i) through practice of Naam.

Naam of (raam) the Almighty (japio) is remembered and practiced (bachni = with words) with guidance of the guru; those who follow the guru, (har-i) the Almighty (dhaari) bestows (kripley) grace on them. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Har har agam agocẖar su▫āmī jan jap mil salal salle.  Har ke sanṯ mil rām ras pā▫i▫ā ham jan kai bal balle.

||1||

(Har-i har-i) the Almighty (suaami) Master is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension, and is (agochar) not perceived by the sensory organs; (jan = servant) the seekers (jap-i) remember and practice IT’s virtues and (mil-i = meet) remain absorbed in IT like (salal) water merges (salal-ley) in water – find IT within.

I (paaiaa) obtained (ras-u) the taste – liking for virtues of (raam) the Almighty (mil-i = on meeting) in company of (sant = saints) seekers (key) of (har-i) the Almighty; (ham) I (bal-i balal-le = am sacrifice, kai = to) adore (jan = servants) the seekers for that. 1.

The (panch dhaatoo) five vices present (vich-i) in (deyhi) the body are (asaadh) uncontrollable; Naam of (har-i) the Almighty (kee-ey = makes, parley = far) destroys them (khin) in a moment. 2.

The sight/vision of God (lagaaee = develops) creates (preet-i) love for IT (man-i) in the minds of (sant = saints) seekers of (har-i) the Almighty (jiau) like sight of (sas-i) the moon causes (kamley) the lotus to blossom.

Or like (murley) the young of (mor) the peacock (bigsai) is happy (man-i) in the mind when (ghan) the numerous (ghan-u, ghanhar-i) clouds (unvai) descend and (garjai) thunder. 3.

Says (jan) humble fourth Nanak: (Har-i) God (laaey = created) gave this (amal) addiction of being in company/remembrance of IT-self; please (meylhu) unite me with Yourself to experience (bhaley = good) the great (anad/anand) bliss. 4. 2.

Nat mėhlā 4.  Mere man jap har har nām sakẖe.  Gur parsādī har nām ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫o ham saṯgur cẖaran pakẖe. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Natt. O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (jap-i) remember and practice (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating (naam) virtues of the Almighty. Naam is your (sakhey) companion – here and in the hereafter; this is how –

(Ham) I (pakhey) wash (charan) the feet, i.e. I request for guidance, of (satigur) the true guru and as taught by him, (dhiaaio) pay attention to live by, (naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty (parsaadi = with grace) with guidance of the guru. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

Ūṯam jagannāth jagḏīsur ham pāpī saran rakẖe.  Ŧum vad purakẖ ḏīn ḏukẖ bẖanjan har ḏī▫o nām mukẖe. ||1||

O Almighty, You are (ootam) the Sublime (jagan-naath, jagdeesur = master of word) Master of the world, You (rakh-e) kept me, (paai) a transgressor (saran-i) in Your sanctuary, i.e. imparted awareness of Naam, and saved me.

(Tum) You, (vadd) the great (purakh) all-pervasive (har-i) Almighty Master are (bhanjan) the destroyer of (dukh) distress of (deen) the hapless; You (deeo) gave, i.e. motivated, me (mukhey = in mouth) to utter/remember – and live by – Your (naam-u) virtues and commands. 1.

Har gun ūcẖ nīcẖ ham gā▫e gur saṯgur sang sakẖe.  Ji▫o cẖanḏan sang basai nimm birkẖā gun cẖanḏan ke baskẖe. ||2||

(Ham) I (neech) a lowly person (gaaey = sang) praised and learnt to practice (oochey = high) the great (gun) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty (sang-i) in company of (gur) the great (satigur) true guru, my (sakhey) friend – and became like the guru.

It is (jiau) like when the bitter (nimm-u) Neem (birkha) tree (basai = abides) is (sang-i = with) near (chandan) the Sandalwood tree, it (bakhsey) bestowed (gun = virtue) fragrance (key) of (chandan) sandalwood. 2.

Hamre avgan bikẖi▫ā bikẖai ke baho bār bār nimkẖe.  Avgani▫āre pāthar bẖāre har ṯāre sang jankẖe. ||3||

(Hamrey) our (avgan) faults because (key) of being (bikhai) in (bikhiaa = poison) temptations of the world-play are (bahu) numerous; we commit them (nimkhey) every moment (baar baar) again and again.

We (avganiaarey) transgressors are weighed down with vices to become (bhaarey) heavy like (paathar) stones – and cannot get across the world-ocean; (har-i) the Almighty (taarey) ferries across, i.e. enables to overcome vices, (sang-i) in company of (jan = servants) the devotees, i.e. by leading to the holy congregation. 3.

(Jin kau) those whom (tum) You (raakhahau) protect, o (suaami) Master, (sabh) all (tin key) their (paap) transgressions (krikhey) are pulled out, i.e. removed.

Says (jan) humble fourth Nanak: O (daiaal) compassionate Master (key) of fourth Nanak, i.e. of all creatures, (tum) You (taarey = ferry) save (dustt) evil doers like (harankhey) Harnakashyap – the demon king, and father of Bhagat Prahlaad, please take care of me. 4. 3.

Note: In this Shabad the fourth Guru stresses the need to follow those who are devoted to – live in obedience to – the Creator. He supplicates to the Almighty – on behalf of all creatures – to enable to follow the example of such devotees. We should not think we can be free of temptations in the world on our own and need to listen to Keertan and discourse in holy congregation.

(Har-i har-i) the Almighty (jagdeesur-i) Master of the world (kripa kari) is kind to enable (dhiaaio) paying attention to – and live by – commands of (har-i) the Almighty (lagey = attached, pag-i = to feet) guided by the example of (jan) the devotees. 1.

Having committed numerous acts of (bhool = going astray) commission and (chook) omission, (ham) I have (ab) now (aaey = came) placed myself in (saranagey = sanctuary) care and obedience of (prabh) the Master.

(Ham) I have placed myself in (tum) Your (sarnaagat-i) care and obedience, o (pratipaalak = nurturer) kind (suaami) Master; please (raakhahu = protect) take care of this (vadd) great (paapgey) sinner. 1.

(Chheepa) the fabric printer – Namdev – was (dusttaario) treated as evil while (gaavat = singing) praising (gun) Divine virtues – as he was of low caste, and pushed out of the temple – but (prabh) the Master (raakhi) preserved (paij) the honor of IT’s (jangey) devotee – by turning the face of the temple to where Namdev sat behind it. 2.

Practice of Naam of the Almighty (kaattey = cuts) removes (kilbikh) vices and (paap) transgressions from the mind (jiv) like (krisaan-i) the farmer (luney) cuts (kheyt) the crop. 1.

(Jio) like – as the story goes – (kunchar-u) an elephant was (baadhio = bound) held by (tandooai) an alligator and (mokh mukhn-e = emancipated) was released when it (cheytio = remembered) invoked (har-i) the Almighty. 3.

Ih parpancẖ kī▫ā parabẖ su▫āmī sabẖ jagjīvan jugṇe.  Ji▫o sallai salal uṯẖėh baho lahrī mil sallai salal samṇe. ||2||

(Ih-u) this (parpanch = expanse of five elements) creation has been (keeaa) made by (prabh) the Almighty (suaami) Master and (sabh-u) everyone/thing (jugn-e/jog = united with) merges back with (jagjeevan-u = life of the world) the Creator at the end.

It is (jio) like (bahu) numerous (lahri) waves of (salal) water (utthah-i) rise (salalai) from water – in the sea – and (salal = water) the water-waves (mil-i = meet) fall back into (salalai) the water to (samn-e) merge in it. 2.

Jo parabẖ kī▫ā so ṯum hī jānhu ham nah jāṇī har gahṇe.  Ham bārik ka▫o riḏ usṯaṯ ḏẖārahu ham karah parabẖū simarṇe. ||3||

O (prabh) Master, (tum hi) You alone (jaanhu) know about (jo) what You (keeaa) created; (ham) we do not (jaanee) know Your (gahnee = depth) capabilities, o (har-i) Almighty.

We have this supplication: Please (dhaarhu) impart (ustat-i = praise) awareness of Your virtues (kau) to (ham) us, Your (baarik) children, so that (ham) we (karah-i = do) engage in their (simran-e) remembrance and emulation, o (prabhoo) Almighty. 3.

Ŧum jal niḏẖ har mān sarovar jo sevai sabẖ falṇe.  Jan Nānak har har har har bāʼncẖẖai har ḏevhu kar kirapṇe. ||4||6||

(Har-i) Almighty, (tum) You are (jal = water, nidh-i = treasure) an ocean, and the Mansarovar lake where pearls are found – You are the source of virtues; one (jo) who (s-evai = serves) is obedient to You, obtains (sabh) all (phaln-e) fruits, i.e. fulfillment of all wishes – the most sublime being union with You.

(Jan-u) humble fourth Nanak, i.e. we all creatures, (baanchhai) seeks to be aware of Your (har-i har-i har-i) purifying and rejuvenating virtues and commands in thought, word and deed; please (kar-i = show, kripn-e = kindness) be kind and (d-evhu) grant this, (har-i) o Almighty. 4. 6.
