SGGS pp 986-988, Maali Gaurra M: 5 and Namdev Ji

 

ਮਾਲੀ ਗਉੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫    ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Mālī ga▫uṛā mėhlā 5    Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur prasāḏ.

 

Composition (mahla 5) of the fifth Guru in Raag Maali Gaurra.  Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known (satigur) with the true guru’s (prasaad-i) grace/guidance

 

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਟਹਲ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰ ॥ ਅਵਰ ਟਹਲਾ ਝੂਠੀਆ ਨਿਤ ਕਰੈ ਜਮੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Re man tahal har sukẖ sār.  Avar tahlā jẖūṯẖī▫ā niṯ karai jam sir mār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

(R-e) o (man = mind) human being, (ttahl = service) living by Naam, i.e. emulating virtues and obeying commands of (har-i) the Almighty brings (saar) the sublime (sukh) comfort – of union with IT, and one is not be reborn.

(Avar) other (ttahla = services) acts like pleasing people, worship of gods/goddesses and rituals – are (jhoottheea = false) illusory – they do not bring that comfort; (jam) agent of Divine justice (karai = does, maar = beating) hits (sir-i) on the head, i.e. all these only lead to grief – by being denied union with God and being put in cycles of births and deaths.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਜਿਨਾ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੀਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੰਗਾਰ ॥ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤਾਰਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੧॥

Jinā masṯak līkẖi▫ā ṯe mile sangār.  Sansār bẖa▫ojal ṯāri▫ā har sanṯ purakẖ apār. ||1||

 

Those (jinaa) in whose (mastak-i = forehead) destiny, it is so (leekhiaa) written, (t-e) they (mil-e = meet, sangaar = together) join holy congregation – where virtues of the Almighty are recounted, and learnt to emulate.

Such (sant = saintly, purakh = people) seekers of (apaar) the Infinite (har-i) Almighty are (taariaa) ferried across (sansaar-u = world, bhaujal-u = world ocean) the world-ocean – to unite with the Almighty, and not reborn. 1.

 

ਨਿਤ ਚਰਨ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਸਾਧ ਕੇ ਤਜਿ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥ ਸਭ ਤਜਹੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਆਸੜੀ ਰਖੁ ਆਸ ਇਕ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥੨॥

Niṯ cẖaran sevhu sāḏẖ ke ṯaj lobẖ moh bikār.  Sabẖ ṯajahu ḏūjī āsṛī rakẖ ās ik nirankār. ||2||

 

(Taj-i) forsake (bikaar) the vices of (lobh) greed, (moh) attachment to the world-play, and (nit) ever (s-evhu) serve (charan) feet, i.e. comply with instructions, (k-e) of (saadh) the guru.

(Tajahu) give up (sabh) all (dooji = second) other (aasrri) expectations, i.e. do not look to others, and (rakh-u) keep (aas) expectation from (ik) the One (nirankaar) Formless Master – whom everyone looks to. 2.

 

ਇਕਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਸਾਕਤਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਾਰ ॥ ਧੁਰਿ ਹੋਵਨਾ ਸੁ ਹੋਇਆ ਕੋ ਨ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰ ॥੩॥

Ik bẖaram bẖūle sākṯā bin gur anḏẖ anḏẖār.  Ḏẖur hovnā so ho▫i▫ā ko na metaṇhār. ||3||

 

(Ik-i = one type) some people (saakta) who turn away from God and seek material benefits – are (bhool-e) led astray (bharam-i) by delusion – lack of faith in God; they (bin-u = without) do not follow (gur) the guru and are (andh) blinded by (andhaar) darkness, i.e. remain oblivious of the purpose of life to live by Naam or Divine virtues and commands.

But it is not in their hands; only (su) that (hoiaa) happens what (hovna = is to happen) is ordained (dhur-i) from the source – the Creator; (ko na = not any) no one (mettanhaar) is capable to erase that writing/Divine will. 3.

 

ਅਗਮ ਰੂਪੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕਾ ਅਨਿਕ ਨਾਮ ਅਪਾਰ ॥ ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰ ॥੪॥੧॥

Agam rūp gobinḏ kā anik nām apār.  Ḏẖan ḏẖan ṯe jan nānkā jin har nāmā ur ḏẖār. ||4||1||

 

(Roop-u = form) the Being (ka) of (gobind = master of the world) the Almighty is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension; (apaar) the Infinite has (anik) numerous (naam = names) attributes.

(Dhan-u dhann-u) blessed are (t-e) those (jan = servants) seekers (jin) who (dhaar-i) keep (naama) Naam or virtues and commands  of (har-i) the Almighty (ur-i) in mind – as guide for life, says (jan) humble fifth Nanak. 4. 1.

Mālī ga▫uṛā mėhlā 5.  Rām nām ka▫o namaskār.  Jās japaṯ hovaṯ uḏẖār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition (mahla 5) of the fifth Guru in Raag Maali Gaurra.  We should (namaskaar) pay obeisance, i.e. respectfully live by, (naam) virtues and commands of (raam) the all-pervasive Almighty,

(japat) by remembrance and practice of (jaas-u) which, one (hovat = happens) is (udhaar) saved, from coming back to the world by rebirth. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਧੰਧ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਬੰਧ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਚਤੁਰ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਕੁਲਹ ਉਧਰ ॥੧॥

Jā kai simran mitėh ḏẖanḏẖ.  Jā kai simran cẖẖūtėh banḏẖ.  Jā kai simran mūrakẖ cẖaṯur.  Jā kai simran kulah uḏẖar. ||1||

 

Naam, i.e. commands of the Creator to the soul, (simran-i) by remembrance (kai) of (ja) which, (dhandh = entanglements) attachments to the world-play (mittah-i = effaced) end; and (bandh = bonds) influence of vices (chhoottah-i = freed) leave from the mind.

By (ja kai) whose (saimran-i) remembrance (moorakh) fools become (chatur = clever) wise, i.e. become conscious of what is good for them, and one’s (kulah) lineage – those in association – (udhar) is saved from rebirth. 1.

 

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਭਉ ਦੁਖ ਹਰੈ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਅਪਦਾ ਟਰੈ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਮੁਚਤ ਪਾਪ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਸੰਤਾਪ ॥੨॥

Jā kai simran bẖa▫o ḏukẖ harai.  Jā kai simran apḏā tarai.  Jā kai simran mucẖaṯ pāp.  Jā kai simran nahī sanṯāp. ||2||

 

Naam, (ja kai) by whose (simran-i) remembrance and practice, (bhau) fear and (dukh) distress (harai) are taken away; and (apdaa) tribulations are (ttarai) obviated.

By whose remembrance and practice (paap) transgressions are (muchat) avoided, and (santaap) suffering (nahi) is not experienced. 2.

 

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਰਿਦ ਬਿਗਾਸ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਕਵਲਾ ਦਾਸਿ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਤਰੇ ਨਿਦਾਨ ॥੩॥

Jā kai simran riḏ bigās.  Jā kai simran kavlā ḏās.  Jā kai simran niḏẖ niḏẖān.  Jā kai simran ṯare niḏān. ||3||

 

Naam, (ja kai) by whose (simran-i) remembrance (rid) the mind (bigaas) is happy – because transgressions and hence their consequences are obviated; and (kavla/maaiaa) the world-play becomes (daas-i) servant, i.e. ego is channelized to creative effort.

And by whose remembrance and practice, (nidh/nau nidh-i = nine treasures, nidhaan = treasures) everything is obtained and one (tar-e = swims) gets across the world-ocean (nidaan) at the end, i.e. is not reborn after death. 3.

 

ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰੀ ॥ ਕੋਟਿ ਭਗਤ ਉਧਾਰੁ ਕਰੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸ ਦਾਸਾ ਦੀਨੁ ਸਰਨ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਥਾ ਸੰਤ ਚਰਨ ॥੪॥੨॥

Paṯiṯ pāvan nām harī.  Kot bẖagaṯ uḏẖār karī.  Har ḏās ḏāsā ḏīn saran.  Nānak māthā sanṯ cẖaran. ||4||2||

 

Awareness of Naam, or virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty (paavan) purifies/lifts those (patit) those fallen to vices; it has (kari = done, udhaar-u = emancipation) emancipated (kott-i = crore/ten million) millions of (bhagat) devotees.

I, (deen-u) a humble person, place myself (saran = sanctuary) in care and obedience of (daas) servant of (daasaa) the servants, i.e. sincere seekers of (har-i) the Almighty; my (maathaa = forehead) obeisance at (charan) feet of (sant) the seekers, says fifth Nanak. 4. 2.

Mālī ga▫uṛā mėhlā 5.  Aiso sahā▫ī har ko nām.  Sāḏẖsangaṯ bẖaj pūran kām. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition (mahla 5) of the fifth Guru in Raag Maali Gaurra.  Awareness of (naam) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty is (sahaaee) helpful (aaiso) thus – as described in succeeding verses.

(Bhaj-u = remember) become aware of them (saadhsangat-i = company of the guru) in holy congregation – practice them, and your – (kaam) purpose – of union with the Creator – will (pooran) be accomplished.

ਬੂਡਤ ਕਉ ਜੈਸੇ ਬੇੜੀ ਮਿਲਤ ॥ ਬੂਝਤ ਦੀਪਕ ਮਿਲਤ ਤਿਲਤ ॥

Būdaṯ ka▫o jaise beṛī milaṯ.  Būjẖaṯ ḏīpak milaṯ ṯilaṯ.

 

Being aware of Naam helps one trapped in vices (jais-e) like (booddat) a drowning person (kau milat) gets (b-erri) a boat; or (boojhat) an extinguishing (deepak) oil lamp (milat) gets (tilat/t-el) oil.

ਜਲਤ ਅਗਨੀ ਮਿਲਤ ਨੀਰ ॥ ਜੈਸੇ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਮੁਖਹਿ ਖੀਰ ॥੧॥

Jalaṯ agnī milaṯ nīr.  Jaise bārik mukẖėh kẖīr. ||1||

 

Or (jalat) one burning (agni) with fire (milat) gets (neer) water; or (jais-e) like (kheer) milk is fed (mokhai-i) in the mouth of a hungry (baarik) child. 1.

 

ਜੈਸੇ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਸਖਾ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ॥ ਜੈਸੇ ਭੂਖੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਮਾਤ ॥ ਜੈਸੇ ਕਿਰਖਹਿ ਬਰਸ ਮੇਘ ॥ ਜੈਸੇ ਪਾਲਨ ਸਰਨਿ ਸੇਂਘ ॥੨॥

Jaise raṇ mėh sakẖā bẖarāṯ.  Jaise bẖūkẖe bẖojan māṯ.  Jaise kirkẖahi baras megẖ.  Jaise pālan saran seʼngẖ. ||2||

 

Naam is helpful (jais-e) like (bhraat) a brother (sakhaa) joining (mah-i) in (ran) battle; or even a (maat) a little (bhojan) food to (bhookh-e) a hungry person.

Or (jais-e) like (baras) falling of (m-egh = cloud) rain is helpful (kirkhah-i/krishi) for the crop, or (saran-i) refuge of (s-engh/singh) the lion (paalan = looks after) protects from danger in the jungle. 2.
ਗਰੁੜ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਹੀ ਸਰਪ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ॥ ਸੂਆ ਪਿੰਜਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਖਾਇ ਬਿਲਾਸੁ ॥ ਜੈਸੋ ਆਂਡੋ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਜੈਸੋ ਦਾਨੋ ਚਕੀ ਦਰਾਹਿ ॥੩॥

Garuṛ mukẖ nahī sarap ṯarās.  Sū▫ā pinjar nahī kẖā▫e bilās.  Jaiso āʼndo hirḏe māhi.  Jaiso ḏāno cẖakī ḏarāhi. ||3||

 

Naam is helpful like – the belief that – there is no (traas) fear of (sarap) a snake with Garurr mantra (mukh-i) being uttered by the mouth, or the way (bilaas-u) the cat cannot (khaa-e) eat (sooaa) the parrot when it is (pinjar-i) in the cage.

(Jaiso) the way – a bird-mother who has left (aanddo) eggs behind – prays for their protection – (maah-i) in mind and they are saved; or like in a flour mill (daano) the grains that fall in the gap for (daraah-i = house) next to the axle of (chaki) grinding machine escape being ground; similarly one close to God is not harmed by vices all round. 3.

 

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਓਪਮਾ ਥੋਰ ਕਹੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਤੁਹੀ ॥ ਊਚ ਮੂਚੌ ਬਹੁ ਅਪਾਰ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਰੇ ਸਾਰ ॥੪॥੩॥

Bahuṯ opmā thor kahī.  Har agam agam agāḏẖ ṯuhī.  Ūcẖ mūcẖou baho apār.  Simraṯ Nānak ṯare sār. ||4||3||

 

Your (opma/upma) eulogy is (bahut) very great; I have (kahi = said) described (thor) a little by the above allegories; O (har-i) Almighty (tuhi) You are (agam) beyond reach and (agam) still farther; You are (agaadh-i = bottomless) unfathomable.

You are (ooch) high and (moochao) big, (bahu = very) great and (apaar) Infinite; like (saar) iron is taken across water by a ship; similarly one weighed down by vices (tar-e) gets across the world-ocean (simrat) by remembrance and practice of Naam, says fifth Nanak. 4. 3.

ਮਾਲੀ ਗਉੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਇਹੀ ਹਮਾਰੈ ਸਫਲ ਕਾਜ ॥ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਦਾਸ ਕਉ ਲੇਹੁ ਨਿਵਾਜਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Mālī ga▫uṛā mėhlā 5.  Ihī hamārai safal kāj.  Apune ḏās ka▫o leho nivāj. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition (mahla 5) of the fifth Guru in Raag Maali Gaurra.  (Ihee) these things – as described in succeeding verses make (hamarai) my (kaaj) purpose (saphal = fruitful) fulfilled i.e. I can attain union with the Almighty.

Please (lehu nivaaj-i) give this honor (kau) to me, (apun-e = own) Your (daas = servant) seeker, o God. 1.

ਚਰਨ ਸੰਤਹ ਮਾਥ ਮੋਰ ॥ ਨੈਨਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਪੇਖਉ ਨਿਸਿ ਭੋਰ ॥ ਹਸਤ ਹਮਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਟਹਲ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਤ ਬਹਲ ॥੧॥

Cẖaran sanṯėh māth mor.  Nain ḏaras pekẖa▫o nis bẖor.  Hasaṯ hamre sanṯ tahal.  Parān man ḏẖan sanṯ bahal. ||1||

 

May I place (mor) my (maath) forehead on (charan) feet (santah = of saints) of the seekers; i.e. may I pay obeisance and follow the example of Your seekers; and (pekhau) see (daras-u) sight/vision, i.e. be in company of the saints (nis-i) night and (bhor = dawn) day.

May (hamr-e) my (hast) hands perform (ttahl) service of (sant) the saints; I (bahal = offer) dedicate my (praan) life, (man-u = mind) thoughts and (dhan-u) wealth in service of the saints. 1.

 

ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਗੁਨ ਬਸਹਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਚੀਤਿ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਆਗਿਆ ਮਨਹਿ ਮੀਠ ॥ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਸੰਤ ਡੀਠ ॥੨॥

Saṯsang mere man kī parīṯ.  Sanṯ gun basėh merai cẖīṯ.  Sanṯ āgi▫ā manėh mīṯẖ.  Merā kamal bigsai sanṯ dīṯẖ. ||2||

 

May my (preet-i) affection be (sang-i) for the saints; and (gun) virtues of the saints (basah-i) abide in (m-erai) my (cheet-i) mind – and I emulate them.

May (aagiaa = orders) instructions of the saints be (meetth = sweet) agreeable (manah-i) to my mind; and may (m-era) my (kamal-u = lotus) mind (bigsai) be happy to (ddeetth) see the saints. 2.

 

ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਿਆਸ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਬਚਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਹਿ ਮੰਤ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਬਿਖੈ ਹੰਤ ॥੩॥

Saṯsang merā ho▫e nivās.  Sanṯan kī mohi bahuṯ pi▫ās.  Sanṯ bacẖan mere manėh manṯ.  Sanṯ parsāḏ mere bikẖai hanṯ. ||3||

 

May (m-era) my (nivaas-u) abode (ho-e) be, i.e. I keep company, (sang-i) with the saints; may (moh-i) I have (bahut-u) great (piaas) longing (ki = of) for, i.e. to learn from and follow, (santan) the saints.

May (bachan) words of the saints be (mant/mantra) orders for (m-er-e) my (manah-i) mind; and (m-er-e) my (bikhai/Vishay) vices (hant) be destroyed (prasaad-i) with grace/guidance of (sant) the saints. 3.

 

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਏਹਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਇਆਲ ਮੋਹਿ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਦਾਨ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ ਚਰਨ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਿਦੇ ਮਝਾਰਿ ॥੪॥੪॥

Mukaṯ jugaṯ ehā niḏẖān.  Parabẖ ḏa▫i▫āl mohi ḏevhu ḏān.  Nānak ka▫o parabẖ ḏa▫i▫ā ḏẖār.  Cẖaran sanṯan ke mere riḏe majẖār. ||4||4||

 

(Eha) this is (nidhaan = treasure) the resource/means and (jugat-i) method of achieving (mukat-i) emancipation – from vices in life, and from rebirth after death. O (daiaal) compassionate (prabh) Almighty, please (d-evhu) give me this (daan = alms) benediction/ability.

O (prabh) Almighty, please (dhaar-i) bestow (daiaa) kindness (kau) to fifth Nanak; may (charan = feet) instructions of (santan) the saints abide (majhaar-i) in (m-er-e) my (rid-e) mind. 4. 4.

Mālī ga▫uṛā mėhlā 5.  Sabẖ kai sangī nāhī ḏūr.  Karan karāvan hājrā hajūr. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition (mahla 5) of the fifth Guru in Raag Maali Gaurra.  The Almighty is (kai sangai) with (sabh) all creatures, not (door-i) far.

IT is (haajra) present (hajoor-i = in front) with everyone everywhere and, (karan) does and (karaavan) gets things done, i.e. being within the creatures IT motivates them to act. 1.

 (Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਸੁਨਤ ਜੀਓ ਜਾਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਸੁਖ ਕੀਓ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ ॥ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ॥ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥

Sunaṯ jī▫o jās nām.  Ḏukẖ binse sukẖ kī▫o bisrām.  Sagal niḏẖ har har hare.  Mun jan ṯā kī sev kare. ||1||

 

(Sunat) listening to, with awareness of, (jaas-u) whose (naam-u) virtues and commands one (jeeo = lives) is revitalized to overcome vices; (dukh) distress as retribution for vices (bins-e = destroyed) is obviated and (sukh) peace (keeo = does, bisraam-u = rest) is experienced.

(Sagal) all (nidh-i) treasures are covered by the wealth of Awareness of (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) revitalizing virtues of (har-e) the Almighty; (mun-i jan) the sages (kar-e = perform, s-ev = service) emulate those virtues (ta ki = of that) the Almighty. 1.

 

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕੋਇ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥੨॥

Jā kai gẖar sagle samāhi.  Jis ṯe birthā ko▫e nāhi.  Jī▫a janṯar kare parṯipāl.  Saḏā saḏā sevhu kirpāl. ||2||

 

Taking last line first: (Sadaa sadaa) for ever (s-evhu = serve) acknowledge and obey that (kirpal) kind Almighty,

(Ja kai) in whose (ghar-i = house, samah-i = contained) control is (sagl-e) everyone/everything.

(T-e) from (jis) whose door (ko-e naah-e) no one goes (birtha) empty-handed.

And who (kar-e = does, pratipal = nurturing) takes care of all (jeea jantr) creatures. 2.

 

ਸਦਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਦੀਬਾਣਿ ॥ ਬੇਮੁਹਤਾਜ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਾਣਿ ॥ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਨਾ ਆਪਨ ਆਪਿ ॥ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੩॥

Saḏā ḏẖaram jā kai ḏībāṇ.  Bemuhṯāj nahī kicẖẖ kāṇ.  Sabẖ kicẖẖ karnā āpan āp.  Re man mere ṯū ṯā ka▫o jāp. ||3||

 

(R-e) o (m-er-e) my (man) mind, (too) you should (jaap-i) remember and obey (ta kau) that Almighty, —

(Ja kai) in whose (deebaan-i) court only (dharam-u = righteousness) true justice is (sadaa) ever delivered.

Who is (b-emuhtaaj) not dependent on anyone and has (nahi kichh-u = not any) no (kaan-i) obligation to anyone, i.e. does not depend on donations to make provisions for the creatures.

IT (karna) does (sabh kichh-u) everything (aapan aap-i) on IT’s own – is not influenced by anyone. 3.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਉ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ॥ ਜਾਸੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨ ਤਨਹਿ ਰਾਤ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕਰੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੫॥

Sāḏẖsangaṯ ka▫o ha▫o balihār.  Jās mil hovai uḏẖār.  Nām sang man ṯanėh rāṯ.  Nānak ka▫o parabẖ karī ḏāṯ. ||4||5||

 

(Hau) I (balihaar = am sacrifice, kau = to) adore (saadh = guru, sangat-i = company) the guru’s guidance; by (milat) receiving (jaas) which (udhaar-u) emancipation (hovai = happens) is achieved from vices, because

(Man) mind and (tanah-i) body, i.e. the total being, is (raat) imbued (sang-i) with, i.e. one lives by, (naam) virtues and commands of the Almighty.

(Prabh-i) the Master has (kar-i = given, daat-i = benediction) enabled me, fifth Nanak, to be like that. 4. 5.

ਮਾਲੀ ਗਉੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਦੁਪਦੇ   ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Mālī ga▫uṛā mėhlā 5 ḏupḏe  Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

Composition (mahla 5) of the fifth Guru in Raag Maali Gaurra, (dupad-e) with two stanzas each.  Invoking the one all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

ਹਰਿ ਸਮਰਥ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾ ॥ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har samrath kī sarnā.  Jī▫o pind ḏẖan rās merī parabẖ ek kāran karnā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

I have placed myself in (sarna = sanctuary) care and obedience of You, (samrath) the Omnipotent Master.

(M-eri) my (jeeo) life, (pindd-u) body, (dhan-u) wealth and (raas-i = financial capital) awareness of Divine virtues and commands are given by (ek) the One (prabh) Almighty who (karna) does all that (kaaran = done) happens. 1.

(Rahaau) pause and reflect on this.

 

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੀਵਣੈ ਕਾ ਮੂਲੁ ॥ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬਤ ਠਾਈ ਸੂਖਮੋ ਅਸਥੂਲ ॥੧॥

Simar simar saḏā sukẖ pā▫ī▫ai jīvṇai kā mūl.  Rav rahi▫ā sarbaṯ ṯẖā▫ī sūkẖmo asthūl. ||1||

 

(Simar-i simar-i = remembering) by being conscious of the Almighty in thoughts and deeds – transgressions are obviated and (sukh-u) comfort/peace (sadaa) ever (paaeeai) experienced; this is (mool-u = root) the essence of (jeevnai) life – one lives without succumbing to temptations in the world-play.

The Almighty (rav-i rahiaa) is present (sookhmo = subtle) as non-manifest and (asthhool = gross) as manifest at (sarbat) all (tthaaee) places. 1.

ਆਲ ਜਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਤਜਿ ਸਭਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨਾ ਨਿਤਿ ਗਾਉ ॥ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਦੇਹੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥੧॥੬॥

Āl jāl bikār ṯaj sabẖ har gunā niṯ gā▫o.  Kar joṛ Nānak ḏān māʼngai ḏeh apnā nā▫o. ||2||1||6||

 

(Taj-i) forsake (sabh-i) all (aal = house, jaal = web/net) entanglements/attachment while living as householder, and (nit-i) ever (gaau = sing) praise and emulate (gunaa) virtues of (har-i) the Almighty.

Fifth Nanak (jorr-i = with folded, kar = hands) humbly (maangai) asks this (daan-u = charity) benediction; please (d-ehu = give) impart me awareness of (apna = own) Your (naau) Naam, i.e. virtues and commands, as guide for life, o Almighty. 2. 1. 6.

(Kaun-u = who?) no one (jaanai) knows (t-er-e) Your (chalit) plays, which have (kichh-u naahi = not any) no (ant-u) limit or (paar) far end, i.e. they arsarnaagat-i = sanctuary) care and obedience – please save me. 2. 2.
