SGGS pp 1223-1225, Saarag M: 5, Shabads 97-107.

 

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਬਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਸਗਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਪੂਰਨ ਤਾਹੂ ਕੇ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Jā kai rām ko bal ho▫e.  Sagal manorath pūran ṯāhū ke ḏūkẖ na bi▫āpai ko▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. One (ja kai = with whom) who has (bal-u) the strength, i.e. who conducts the self by Naam or virtues and commands – (ko) of (raam) the Almighty; (sagal) all (manorath) aspirations (key) of (taahoo) that person are (pooran) fulfilled; (na koey = not any) no (dookh-u) grief (biaapai) afflicts him/her. 1.

ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਨਿਜੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰਉ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪੇਖਨ ਕੌ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

Jo jan bẖagaṯ ḏās nij parabẖ kā suṇ jīvāʼn ṯis so▫e.  Uḏam kara▫o ḏarsan pekẖan kou karam parāpaṯ ho▫e. ||1||

 

One (jo = which) who is (jan-u = servant) a humble (bhagat-u) devotee of (prabh-u) Master of (nij-u = own) all; I (jeevaa-n = live) am motivated (sun-i) by listening, – to emulate -, (soey = glory) virtues of (tis-u) that devotee.

I (karau) make (udam-u) effort (kou) to (peykhan) see (darsan-u) sight, i.e. to watch his/her way of living to follow his/her example; but it (hoey) is (praapat-i) obtained (karam-i) with good fortune. 1.

 

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਉ ਦੂਸਰ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਪਨੇ ਕਉ ਚਰਨ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਸੰਤ ਧੋਇ ॥੨॥੭੪॥੯੭॥

Gur parsādī ḏarisat nihāra▫o ḏūsar nāhī ko▫e.  Ḏān ḏėh Nānak apne ka▫o cẖaran jīvāʼn sanṯ ḏẖo▫e. ||2||74||97||

 

(Parsaadi) with grace of/enlightenment given by (gur) the guru, I (nihaarau) see the Almighty present within and without (dristt-i = with sight) with the inner and physical eyes; there is (naahi koey = not any) none (doosar = second) other like the Almighty.

O Almighty, kindly (deyh-i) give this (daan = alms) benediction (kau) to (apney) Your own fifth Nanak, i.e. the devotee, that I (dhoey) wash (charan) feet of (sant) the guru, i.e. learn from and follow the example of the guru, to (jeevaa’n = live) lead life free of transgressions – and get to You. 2. 74. 97.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Jīvaṯ rām ke guṇ gā▫e.  Karahu kirpā gopāl bīṯẖule bisar na kab hī jā▫e. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. One (jeevat-u) lives – without falling prey to temptations – (gaaey = singing) by praising and emulating (gun) virtues of (raam) the Almighty.

O (gopaal = nurturer of the world) Sustainor (beetthuley – metaphor for) Almighty, please (karahau) bestow (kripa) mercy that this practice is (na kab hi) never (bisar-i jaaey) forgotten/ignored by me. 1.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੁਮਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਨ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਵ ਹੀ ਰਹਣਾ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਰਾ ਪੈਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਖਾਇ ॥੧॥

Man ṯan ḏẖan sabẖ ṯumrā su▫āmī ān na ḏūjī jā▫e. Ji▫o ṯū rākẖahi ṯiv hī rahṇā ṯumĥrā painĥai kẖā▫e. ||1||

 

O (Suaami) Master, (man-u) the mind, (tan-u) body and (dhan-u = wealth) resources are (tumra = your) given by You, i.e. every creature relies on You; there is no (aan, dooji) other (jaaey) place, i.e. none else to look to.

(Jio) as, i.e. the circumstances in which, (too) You (raakah-i) keep, the creature (rahna) lives (hi) only (tiv) that way, (painai) wearing and (khaaey) eating (tumhra = your) what You provide, i.e. Your will prevails. 1.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਜਨਮਾ ਧਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਇ ॥੨॥੭੫॥੯੮॥

Sāḏẖsangaṯ kai bal bal jā▫ī bahuṛ na janmā ḏẖā▫e. Nānak ḏās ṯerī sarṇā▫ī ji▫o bẖāvai ṯivai cẖalā▫e. ||2||75||98||

 

Everyone should (jaai = be, bal-i bal-i = sacrifice, kai = to) humbly act as learnt in (saadhsangat-i) holy congregation for, with that one does not (dhaaey = run) goes through (janmaa) births (bahurr-i) again.

I have placed myself in (teyri) Your (sarnaaee = sanctuary) care and obedience; please (chalaaey = cause to move) enable me to act (jiau) as would (bhaavai) please You, says (daas = servant) humble fifth Nanak. 2. 75. 98.

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਮਨ ਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੋ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰ ॥ ਆਨ ਕਾਮ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਗਲ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Man re nām ko sukẖ sār.  Ān kām bikār mā▫i▫ā sagal ḏīsėh cẖẖār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Rey) o (man = mind) human being, (sukh) the comfort (ko) of, i.e. peace experienced with, practice of Naam or Divine virtues and commands is (saar) sublime – unique.

(Aan) other (kaam = acts) actions done for the sake of (maaiaa) money are (bikaar/beykaar) useless for, (sagal = all) everything (deesah-i = is seen) that we see is (chhaar = dust) perishable. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell and reflect on this.

 

ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਪਤਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਗੁਬਾਰ ॥ ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਬਾਰੰ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥

Garihi anḏẖ kūp paṯiṯ parāṇī narak gẖor gubār. Anik jonī bẖarmaṯ hāri▫o bẖarmaṯ bāraʼn bār. ||1||

 

(Praani) the creature who (patit) falls in (andh) the blind (koop) well (grih-i) of the house, i.e. commits transgressions blinded by love for the family, is put in (ghor) terrible (gubaar) dark (narak) hell, i.e. cycles of births and deaths.

S/he (bhramat = wanders) goes through (anik) numerous (joni) life forms, and (bhramat) goes through (baara-n baar) again and again, until s/he (haario) gives up acting by own will – and prays: 1.  

 

ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਛਲ ਦੀਨ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰ ॥ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਉਧਾਰ ॥੨॥੭੬॥੯੯॥

Paṯiṯ pāvan bẖagaṯ bacẖẖal ḏīn kirpā ḏẖār. Kar joṛ Nānak ḏān māʼngai sāḏẖsang uḏẖār. ||2||76||99||

 

O Almighty, You are (paavan) the purifier of (patit) those fallen to vices and (bachhal) lover (bhagat-i) of the devotees; please (dhaar) bestow (kirpa) kindness on this (deen = poor) hapless servant.

Fifth Nanak (jorr-i = with folded, kar = hands) humbly (maangai) begs for (daan = alms) this benediction: Please lead me to (saadsang-i) company of the guru for my (udhaar) emancipation from, i.e. obviate being put in, cycles of births and deaths. 2. 76. 99.

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਬਿਰਾਜਿਤ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਪਰਤਾਪ ॥ ਆਧਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਉਪਾਧਿ ਸਭ ਨਾਸੀ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਤੀਨੈ ਤਾਪ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Birājiṯ rām ko parṯāp.  Āḏẖ bi▫āḏẖ upāḏẖ sabẖ nāsī binse ṯīnai ṯāp. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. One in whose mind (partaap) majesty/influence of (raam) the Almighty (biraajat = sits) abides – that person lives by Naam of virtues and commands of the Almighty. (Teenai) all three (taap) ailments, namely (aadh-i) mental, (biaadh-i) physical and (upaadh-i) delusion (naasi = run) are obviated.

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਭ ਆਸਾ ਚੂਕੇ ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪ ॥ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਅਚੁਤ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਆਤਮ ਧ੍ਰਾਪ ॥੧॥

Ŧarisnā bujẖī pūran sabẖ āsā cẖūke sog sanṯāp.  Guṇ gāvaṯ acẖuṯ abẖināsī man ṯan āṯam ḏẖarāp. ||1||

 

His/her fire of (trisna) desires (bujhi) is extinguished as (sabh) all his/her (aasa) wishes are (pooran) fulfilled; his/her (sog) sorrows and (santaap) distress (chookey) end.

S/he (gaavat = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (achut, abinaasi) the imperishable/Eternal Almighty; his/her (man) mind, (tan) body and (aatam) inner-self (dhraap) are satiated, i.e. s/he is completely at peace. 1.

 

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮਦ ਮਤਸਰ ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਖਾਪ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਭੈ ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਮਾਈ ਬਾਪ ॥੨॥੭੭॥੧੦੦॥

Kām kroḏẖ lobẖ maḏ maṯsar sāḏẖū kai sang kẖāp. Bẖagaṯ vacẖẖal bẖai kātanhāre Nānak ke mā▫ī bāp. ||2||77||100||

 

The devotee’s (kaam) lust, (krodh) anger, (lobh) greed, (mad = intoxication) pride and (matsar) jealousy – the impediments to finding God within – (khaap = destroyed) end (sang-i) with company/guidance (kai) of (saadhoo) the guru. 

The Almighty, (vachhal) the lover (bhagat-i) of the devotees, who (kaattanhaarey = cutter) can obviate (bhai/bhav) rebirth in the world, is (maaee) mother and (baap) father of fifth Nanak, i.e. the devotees rely on the Almighty alone for emancipation. 2. 77. 100.

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਆਤੁਰੁ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਤ ਕੂਕਰੀ ਆਸਾ ਇਤੁ ਲਾਗੋ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Āṯur nām bin sansār.  Ŧaripaṯ na hovaṯ kūkrī āsā iṯ lāgo bikẖi▫ā cẖẖār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Sansaar = world) the human beings are (aatur-u) restless – they run after desires and commit vices – (bin-u = without) by ignoring to live by Naam or virtues and commands of the Almighty.

Their (kookri = greedy nature like dog) insatiable (aasa) desires (na hovat) are not (tripat-i = satiated) fulfilled and (it-u) because of this they (laago = attached) pursue (bikhiaa = poison) unfair means to acquire money, but it is like (chhaar) dust – as it is left behind on death. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell and reflect on this.

 

ਪਾਇ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਓ ਜਨਮਤ ਬਾਰੋ ਬਾਰ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਓ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਕਰਤ ਖੁਆਰ ॥੧॥

Pā▫e ṯẖag▫urī āp bẖulā▫i▫o janmaṯ bāro bār. Har kā simran nimakẖ na simri▫o jamkankar karaṯ kẖu▫ār. ||1||

 

The Almighty (aap-i) IT-self (paaey) puts (tthagauri = intoxicant used by cheats) the intoxicant in mouth, i.e. has created temptations and causes the humans (bhulaaio) to forget God and (janmat) be born (baaro baar) again and again.

S/he does not (simrio) keep in mind to carry out (nimakh) even a bit of (simran-u = what is to be remembered) Hukam or commands of (har-i) the Almighty; and (jamkankar) the agent of Divine justice (karat) makes him/her (khuaar) frustrated i.e. puts in cycles of births and deaths and not allowing union with God. 1.

 

ਹੋਹੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਤੇਰਿਆ ਸੰਤਹ ਕੀ ਰਾਵਾਰ ॥

Hohu kirpāl ḏīn ḏukẖ bẖanjan ṯeri▫ā sanṯėh kī rāvār.

 

I am (raavaar) dust of feet of (teyria) Your (santah = saints) devotees commands; please (hohu) be (kripal) kind to enable me to follow their example, o (bhanjan = destroyer) ameliorator of (dukh) tribulations of (deen) the poor.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਚੈ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਕੋ ਆਧਾਰ ॥੨॥੭੮॥੧੦੧॥

Nānak ḏās ḏaras parabẖ jācẖai man ṯan ko āḏẖār. ||2||78||101||

 

This (daas-u) servant (jaachai) begs for (daras-u) vision of (prabh) the Almighty which is (aadhaar) the mainstay of (man) mind and (tan) body, please grant that, supplicates fifth Nanak. 2. 78. 101.

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਮੈਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੈ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਪੀਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Mailā har ke nām bin jī▫o.  Ŧin parabẖ sācẖai āp bẖulā▫i▫ā bikẖai ṯẖag▫urī pī▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Jeeo) the mind (maila = dirty) is defiled by vices (bin-u = without) by not complying with (naam) commands (key) of (har-i) the Almighty. (Tin-i = that) the One (saachai) Eternal (prabh-i) Master (aap-i) IT-self (bhulaaiaa) causes to forget Naam, by (peeo) giving to drink (tthagauri = intoxicant used by cheats) the intoxicant of (bikhai/vishai) vices/temptations.

(Rahaau) dwell and reflect on this.

 

ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮਤੌ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਂਤੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਤਹੂ ਪਾਈ ॥ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥

Kot janam bẖarmaṯou baho bẖāʼnṯī thiṯ nahī kaṯhū pā▫ī. Pūrā saṯgur sahj na bẖeti▫ā sākaṯ āvai jā▫ī. ||1||

 

The soul (bhramtou) wanders in (kott-i) crores of births in life forms of (bahu) numerous (bhaanti) types and does not (paaee) get (thit-i) settled, i.e. does not end cycles of births and deaths by attaining union with God (katahoo) anywhere.

As long as it does not (bheyttiaa) find (poora) the perfect (satigur-u) true guru (sahj-i) of steadfast mind, s/he (saakat-u = worshipper of Shakti) does not remember/obey God and (aavai) comes and (jaaee) goes, i.e. remains in cycles of births and deaths. 1.

 

ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਿਥ ਦਾਤੇ ਤੁਮ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਉਤਰਿਓ ਪਾਰ ॥੨॥੭੯॥੧੦੨॥

Rākẖ leho parabẖ sammrith ḏāṯe ṯum parabẖ agam apār. Nānak ḏās ṯerī sarṇā▫ī bẖavjal uṯri▫o pār. ||2||79||102||

 

O (daatey = giver) benevolent (prabh) Almighty, You are (sammrath-i) Omnipotent, (agam) beyond reach and (apaar = without far end) Infinite, i.e. I cannot find You on my own, please (raakh-i leyhu) save me from the temptations and lead to Yourself.

I have placed myself in (teyri) Your (sarnaai = sanctuary) care and obedience to (utrio = landed, paar = far shore) get across (bhavjal-u) the world-ocean to You, not to be reborn, says (daas = servant) humble fifth Nanak. 2. 79. 102.

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਰਮਣ ਕਉ ਰਾਮ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਦ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸੁਆਦ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Ramaṇ ka▫o rām ke guṇ bāḏ.  Sāḏẖsang ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai parmesar amriṯ jā ke su▫āḏ. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Gun) virtues (key) of (raam) the Almighty are (kau) for (raman = uttering) remembrance and (baad = discussion) understanding.

(Saadsang-i) in company of the seekers we should, (dhiaaeeai) reflect on virtues of (parmeysar-u) the Supreme Master, (key = of, ja = whom) whose (suaad) taste/experience is (amrit = sweet) enjoyable. 1.

ਸਿਮਰਤ ਏਕੁ ਅਚੁਤ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਦ ॥ ਸਹਜ ਅਨਦ ਅਨਹਦ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਭਏ ਬਿਖਾਦ ॥੧॥

Simraṯ ek acẖuṯ abẖināsī binse mā▫i▫ā māḏ.  Sahj anaḏ anhaḏ ḏẖun baṇī bahur na bẖa▫e bikẖāḏ. ||1||

 

(Maad = intoxication) influences of (maaiaa) temptations (binsey = destroyed) are removed (simrat) by remembering – commands of – (eyk-u) the lone (abinaasi) imperishable (achut = not fallen) Eternal Master.

With God’s remembrance, one shuns vices and experiences (anad/anand) joy with (sahj) poise – without flamboyance – with (anhad) incessant (dhun-i = music) celestial music of (baani) God’s word playing within the mind; (bikhaad) conflicts with vices do not (bhaey) happen, i.e. vices cannot affect, (bahur-i) again. 1.

 

ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿਕ ਗਾਵਤ ਗਾਵਤ ਸੁਕ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ॥ ਪੀਵਤ ਅਮਿਉ ਮਨੋਹਰ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਮਾਦ ॥੨॥੮੦॥੧੦੩॥

Sankāḏik barahmāḏik gāvaṯ gāvaṯ suk par▫hilāḏ. Pīvaṯ ami▫o manohar har ras jap Nānak har bismāḏ. ||2||80||103||

 

Sages like (sankaadik = Sanak etc) the four sons of Brahma – Sanak, Sanaatan, Sanandan and Sanat Kumar and gods (brahmaadik = Brahma etc) Brahma, Vishnu and Shankar – (gaavat = sing) praise and obey God; as do devotees like (Suk) Sukhdev and Prahilaad.

They (peevat) drink (manohar) the fascinating/enjoyable (amio/amrit) life-giving (har-i = God) Divine (ras-u) elixir, i.e. conduct themselves by Naam or commands of the Almighty, and are (bismaad) ecstatic with (har-i) God in  mind, says fifh Nanak. 2. 80. 103.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Kīnĥe pāp ke baho kot.  Ḏinas rainī thakaṯ nāhī kaṯėh nāhī cẖẖot. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. The creature (keenhey) does/is under influence of (bahu) many (kott) crores of, innumerable, past (paap) transgressions.

S/he does those (dinas-u) day and (raini) night and does not (thakat) tire of doing them; s/he (katah-i naahi) never gets (chhott) freedom from the resultant suffering.

ਮਹਾ ਬਜਰ ਬਿਖ ਬਿਆਧੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਉਠਾਈ ਪੋਟ ॥ ਉਘਰਿ ਗਈਆਂ ਖਿਨਹਿ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਜਮਹਿ ਗ੍ਰਾਸੇ ਝੋਟ ॥੧॥

Mahā bajar bikẖ bi▫āḏẖī sir uṯẖā▫ī pot. Ugẖar ga▫ī▫āʼn kẖinėh bẖīṯar jamėh garāse jẖot. ||1||

 

S/he (utthaai) carries (pott/pottli) a bundle of (mahaa) greatly (bajar) unbearable (biaadhi = ailments) faults (sir-i) on the head, i.e. goes to the hereafter loaded with terrible faults committed in life – carries the record of his/her misdeeds, to the hereafter.

All misdeeds (ughar-i gaeeaa’n) exposed (bheetar-i) in (khinah-i) a moment when (jhott) the hair (graasey) are grabbed (jamah-i) by the agent of Divine justice – i.e. when the soul has to face consequences of misdeeds. 1.

 

ਪਸੁ ਪਰੇਤ ਉਸਟ ਗਰਧਭ ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨੀ ਲੇਟ ॥ ਭਜੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਫੇਟ ॥੨॥੮੧॥੧੦੪॥

Pas pareṯ usat garḏẖabẖ anik jonī let.  Bẖaj sāḏẖsang gobinḏ Nānak kacẖẖ na lāgai fet. ||2||81||104||

 

S/he (leytt) wanders in (anik) numerous (joni) life forms like (pas-u) animal, (preyt) ghosts, (usatt) camel and (gardhap) donkey – cannot attain with the Almighty.

(Bhaj) praise (gobind = master of the world) the Almighty (saadhsang-i) with company/ guidance of the guru; then (kachh-u na = not any) no (pheytt = hit/kick) ignominy will be faced in Divine court and the soul accepted for union with the Creator, says fifth Nanak. 2. 81. 104.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Anḏẖe kẖāvėh bisū ke gatāk.  Nain sarvan sarīr sabẖ huti▫o sās ga▫i▫o ṯaṯ gẖāt. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Andhey) the blind (khaavah-i) eat (gattak) plentiful servings (key) of (bisoo) poison, i.e. one oblivious of God’s commands, is blinded by temptations and keep falling prey to vices.

His/her (nain) eyes, (sravan) ears and (sareer-u) body, (sabh-u) everything (huttiao = get tired) cannot resist temptations and (saas-u = breath) life (gaio ghaatt = get exhausted) ends, i.e. one succumbs to temptations, (tat = immediately) without resistance.

ਅਨਾਥ ਰਞਾਣਿ ਉਦਰੁ ਲੇ ਪੋਖਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਗਈਆ ਹਾਟਿ ॥ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਕਰਤ ਕਰਤ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਹਿ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਸਾਕਹਿ ਛਾਂਟਿ ॥੧॥

Anāth rañaṇ uḏar le pokẖėh mā▫i▫ā ga▫ī▫ā hāt. Kilbikẖ karaṯ karaṯ pacẖẖuṯāvahi kabahu na sākėh cẖẖāʼnt. ||1||

 

S/he (ranjnaan) causes sorrow to (anaath = orphan) the hapless to (ley) take money from them and (pokhah-i) fill his/her (udar-u) belly, i.e. exploits the poor, but that (maaiaa) money (gaiaa = gets, haatt-i = taken away) is left behind on death.

The ignorant person (karat karat) keeps committing (kilbikh) transgressions and then (pachhuttvah) repents; s/he (saakah-i) can (kabahu na) never (chhaantt-i = prune) shed them. 1

 

ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਜਮਦੂਤੀ ਆਇ ਸੰਘਾਰਿਓ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਉਪਰਿ ਮਟਾਕ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਨ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਲਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਕੀਨੋ ਫਾਟ ॥੨॥੮੨॥੧੦੫॥

Ninḏak jamḏūṯī ā▫e sangẖāri▫o ḏevėh mūnd upar matāk. Nānak āpan katārī āpas ka▫o lā▫ī man apnā kīno fāt. ||2||82||105||

 

Finally (jamdooti) the agent of Divine justice (aaey) comes and hits (nindak-u = slanderer) ill-wisher of others, (upar-i) on (moondd) the head sanghaario) and drops (deyvah-i = gives) with (mattaak) a thud.

The ill-wisher (laai) hits (kau) on (aapas) the self with (aapan) own (kattaari) dagger; and (keeno) makes (apna) own (man) mind (phaatt = wound) wounded, i.e. the mind becomes vicious – and acts accordingly again, says fifth Nanak. 2. 82. 105.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. Life of (nindak = slanderer) an ill-wisher of men/women of God (ttootti) breaks (beech = in, adh-i = middle) mid-way – when aiming to harm the devotees.

(Suaami) the Almighty Master (aap-i) IT-self (raakhaa = protector) protects (jan = servant) devotee; and (meech) death (aaey = comes, pahoochi = reaches) befalls (beymukh = face turned away) who disobeys God. 1.

ਉਸ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਬੈਸਣੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਈਹਾਂ ਦੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ਨਰਕੁ ਭੁੰਚੈ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਭਰਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

Us kā kahi▫ā ko▫e na suṇ▫ī kahī na baisaṇ pāvai.  Īhāʼn ḏukẖ āgai narak bẖuncẖai baho jonī bẖarmāvai. ||1||

 

(Koey na) no one (sunaee) listens to (kahiaa = words) his entreaties and s/he does not (paavai) get to (baisan-u) sit (kahi) anywhere, i.e. gets no support.

S/he suffers (dukh-u) grief (eenha = here) in life and (aagai = ahead) after death (bhunchai) experiences (narak-u) hell (bharmaavai = wanders) is sent to be born in (bahu) numerous (joni) life forms. 1.

 

ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਭਇਆ ਖੰਡੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਪਣਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀ ਅਨਦ ਮੰਗਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੨॥੮੩॥੧੦੬॥

Pargat bẖa▫i▫ā kẖandī barahmandī kīṯā apṇā pā▫i▫ā. Nānak saraṇ nirbẖa▫o karṯe kī anaḏ mangal guṇ gā▫i▫ā. ||2||83||106||

 

The cosmic law of (paaiaa) receiving the consequences of (apna = own) one’s (keeta) deeds (bhaiaa) is (pragatt-u) manifest, i.e. applies (khanddi) in parts and (brahmanddi) the whole of universes.

I have placed myself (saran-i = in sanctuary) care and obedience (ki) of (kartey) the Creator, (nirbhau = fearless, not answerable to anyone) the highest authority and enjoy (anad/anand) bliss and (mangal) joy (gaaiaa = singing) by praising and emulating (gun) virtues of the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 2. 83. 106.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Trisna) craving – lack of satisfaction – (chalat = moves) happens/afflicts in (bahu) many (parkaar-i) ways.

Craving (hot) is not (pooran) fulfilled in (katahoo) any (baatah-i) way and (ant-i) ultimately (haar-i) defeat (parti/paindi) has to be faced – the soul is taken by Divine justice and sent for rebirth. 1.

ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੂਖ ਨ ਸਹਜੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਇਹੈ ਇਸੁ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਿ ॥ ਆਪ ਪਰ ਕਾ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਹਿ ਜਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

Sāʼnṯ sūkẖ na sahj upjai ihai is bi▫uhār. Āp par kā kacẖẖ na jānai kām kroḏẖėh jār. ||1||

 

Craving does not let (saant-i) peace, (sookh) comfort and (sahaj-u) steadfast-ness of mind be (upjai = show) experienced; (ihai) this is (is-u) its (biohaar-i) conduct/character.

One who is possessed by desires (na jaanai = does not care) has no consideration of (aap) own or (par) other – good or bad, fair or unfair, but s/he must fulfil desires – s/he (jaar-i) is burnt/destroyed by (kaam) lust and (krodhah-i) by anger. 1.

 

ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੁਖਿ ਬਿਆਪਿਓ ਦਾਸ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਤਾਰਿ ॥ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਰਣਾਇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਸਦਾ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਿ ॥੨॥੮੪॥੧੦੭॥

Sansār sāgar ḏukẖ bi▫āpi▫o ḏās levhu ṯār. Cẖaran kamal sarṇā▫e Nānak saḏ saḏā balihār. ||2||84||107||

 

O Almighty, (sansaar) the world (saagar-u) ocean (biaapio) is afflicted (dukh-i) by the malady of craving; please (leyvahu taar-i) ferry this (daas) servant across – enable to be contented with Your will.

I place myself in (sarnaaey) sanctuary of Your (kamal) lotus (charan) feet, i.e. I submit myself to Your care and obedience; and (sad sadaa) for ever (balihaar = be sacrifice) shed my ego to be in Your obedience, says fifth Nanak. 2. 84. 107.

(Sagal) all (dukh) distress (naasah-i = runs) is obviated/removed (deykh-i) seeing IT’s (darsan-u) sight, i.e. with awareness of Divine virtues and commands and their practice; I (balihaara = am sacrifice) adore being at IT’s (kamal) lotus (charan) feet, i.e. being in care and obedience of the Almighty.

ਸਤਿ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੀ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥

Saṯ parmesar saṯ sāḏẖ jan nihcẖal har kā nā▫o. Bẖagaṯ bẖāvnī pārbarahm kī abẖināsī guṇ gā▫o. ||1||

 

(Parmeysar-u) the Supreme Master is (sat-i) Eternal and (saadh = seekers, jan = people) the devotees are (sat-i = true) steadfast in devotion/obedience of (nihchal-u = unshakable) the eternal (naau) Naam or virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty.

O human being, (gaau = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of (abinaasi = imperishable) the Eternal with (bhaavni) loving (bhagt-i) devotion. 1.

 

ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਮਿਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਕਹੁ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੨॥੬੩॥੮੬॥

Agam agocẖar miṯ nahī pā▫ī▫ai sagal gẖatā āḏẖār. Nānak vāhu vāhu kaho ṯā ka▫o jā kā anṯ na pār. ||2||63||86||

 

The Almighty is (aadhaar-u) the mainstay of (sagal) all (ghattaa = bodies) creatures but is (agam-u) beyond reach/comprehension and (agochar-u) not perceived by the senses; the extent of IT’s (mit-i = measure) domain and powers cannot (paaeeai) be known.

(Kahu) call (ta kau) that Master (vaahu vaahu) wondrous, i.e. sing glories of virtues and powers of the Master (ka = of, ja = who) who has no (ant-u) limit or (paar-u = far end) boundary, says fifth Nanak. 2. 63. 86.

Ever since (charan) feet (key) of (gur) the guru (basey) have abided in (meyrai) my (man) mind, i.e. since I placed myself under guidance of the guru; I see (tthaakur-u) the Master (poor rahio) pervading at (sabh) all (thaai) places; (nikatt-i = near) in and (neyrai) near with (sabh) all. 1.

ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਭਇਓ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ ਇਛਾ ਸਗਲ ਪੁਜਾਈ ॥੧॥

Banḏẖan ṯor rām liv lā▫ī saṯsang ban ā▫ī.  Janam paḏārath bẖa▫i▫o punīṯā icẖẖā sagal pujā▫ī. ||1||

 

With the guru’s guidance, I (tor-i) broke (bandhan) bonds, i.e. attachments to the world-play of relatives, wealth, pleasures an so on – which cause transgressions – and (laai) fixed (liv) attention on obedience of (raam) the Almighty; this happened when I (ban-i aaee = get along, became agreeable) started liking being in (santsang-i) holy company/congregation – where virtues and commands of the Almighty are recounted and learnt to practice.

(Padaarath-u = substance) the valuable (janam-u = birth) human life (bhaio) has become (puneeta = purified) free of vices and (sagal) all (ichhaa) wishes have ben (pujaai) fulfilled by finding the Almighty within. 1.

 

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਦ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੬੪॥੮੭॥

Jā ka▫o kirpā karahu parabẖ mere so har kā jas gāvai. Āṯẖ pahar gobinḏ gun gāvai jan Nānak saḏ bal jāvai. ||2||64||87||

 

O (prabh) Almighty Master (meyrey = my) of all, (so) that person (kau) to (ja) whom You (karahu) bestow (kripa) kindness, i.e. whom You motivate from within, (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (jas-u = glory) virtues of the Almighty.

S/he (gaavai = sings) praises and emulates (gun) virtues of (gobind) Master of the world (aatth = eight x pahar = three hours = twenty four hours) round the clock in all activities; (jan-u) humble fifth Nanak (sad) ever (bal-i jaavai = is sacrifice) adores that devotee. 2. 64. 87.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Jīvan ṯa▫o ganī▫ai har pekẖā.  Karahu kirpā parīṯam manmohan for bẖaram kī rekẖā. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Jeevan-u) a life (ganeeai) is counted as successful only (tau) then if (har-i) God is found in it.

O (preetam) beloved (manmohan) fascinating/Omnipotent Master, please (karahu kripa) be kind to (phor-i) break (reykha) line of (bharam) delusion, i.e. enable me to come out of distractions that keep me away from You. 1.

ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਉਪਜਤ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਸਾਸ ਕਿਆ ਸੇਖਾਂ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਆਨ ਜੋ ਚਾਹਤ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਕਾਲੇਖਾ ॥੧॥

Kahaṯ sunaṯ kicẖẖ sāʼnṯ na upjaṯ bin bisās ki▫ā sekẖāʼn. Parabẖū ṯi▫āg ān jo cẖāhaṯ ṯā kai mukẖ lāgai kālekẖā. ||1||

 

Not (kichh-u = some) a bit of (saant-i) peace/satisfaction of mind (upjat = comes about) is achieved simply by (kahat = talking) claiming or (sunat) listening to being called good; there is (kiaa = what?) no (seykhaa-n) status – state of finding God – without (bisaas) belief/devotion/obedience.

One who (tiaag-i) forsakes (prabhoo) the Almighty and (chaahat = wants) longs for (aan) other things; (kaaleykha) black soot (laagai) is applied to (mukh-i) the face (kai) of (ta) that person, i.e. one who forgets God and pursues material things or engages in rituals or worship of gods/goddesses faces ignominy – by being rejected for union with God. 1.

 

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਨ ਨ ਮਾਨਤ ਭੇਖਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸ ਮਗਨ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਪੂਰਨ ਅਰਥ ਬਿਸੇਖਾ ॥੨॥੬੫॥੮੮॥

Jā kai rās sarab sukẖ su▫āmī ān na mānaṯ bẖekẖā. Nānak ḏaras magan man mohi▫o pūran arath bisekẖā. ||2||65||88||

 

One in (ja kai) whose possession is (raas-i) the wealth of God, i.e. one who acts by Divine virtues and commands, of (suaami) the Master/provider of (sarab) all (sukh) comforts, i.e. who fulfils aspirations, s/he does not (maanat) believe in any (bheykha) garb i.e. pretentions.

His/her (man-u) mind (mohio = charmed) yearns, and (magan) remains engrossed, to obtain (darsan) vision of God; his/her (arth) purposes are (biseykha) especially (pooran) accomplished, says fifth Nanak. 2. 65. 88.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Simran rām ko ik nām.  Kalmal ḏagaḏẖ hohi kẖin anṯar kot ḏān isnān. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. The (ik-u) one thing (simran) to remember is to live by Naam or virtues and commands of (raam) the Almighty.

(Kalmal) transgressions (hoh-i) are (dagadh) burnt, i.e. are given up, (antar-i) in (khin) a moment; practice of Naam does that for which people make (kott-i) crores of (daan) charities and take (isnaan) baths at pilgrimages. 1.

ਆਨ ਜੰਜਾਰ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਘਾਲਤ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਫੋਕਟ ਗਿਆਨ ॥ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਸੰਕਟ ਤੇ ਛੂਟੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਭਜਨ ਸੁਖ ਧਿਆਨ ॥੧॥

Ān janjār baritha saram gẖālaṯ bin har fokat gi▫ān. Janam maran sankat ṯe cẖẖūtai jagḏīs bẖajan sukẖ ḏẖi▫ān. ||1||

 

(Aan) other (janjaar/janjaal) entanglements – like rituals – are (ghaalat) doing (britha) useless (sram-u) toil; everything else (bin-u) except awareness of Naam of (har-i) the Almighty is (phokatt) hollow (giaan) knowledge – and causes straying.

One who fixes (dhiaan) attention on (bhajan) praising and emulating virtues of (jagdees = master of the world) God, the source of (sukh) comfort/peace; s/he (chhoottai) is freed (tey) from (sankatt) distress of cycles of (janam) births and (maran) deaths – and unites with the Creator. 1.

 

ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਦਾਨ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਵੈ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥੨॥੬੬॥੮੯॥

Ŧerī saran pūran sukẖ sāgar kar kirpā ḏevhu ḏān. Simar simar Nānak parabẖ jīvai binas jā▫e abẖimān. ||2||66||89||

 

O Almighty, (saagar) the ocean (pooran) full of (sukh) comforts/peace, (kar-i kirpa) kindly (deyvhu) give this (daan) charity, i.e. the benediction: That fifth Nanak’s (abhimaan) pride (binas-i jaaey) is destroyed and he (jeevai) lives – without falling prey to vices – (simar-i simar-i) by ever remembering/keeping in mind, You (prabh) the Almighty. 2. 66. 89.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Ḏẖūraṯ so▫ī jė ḏẖur ka▫o lāgai.  So▫ī ḏẖuranḏẖar so▫ī basunḏẖar har ek parem ras pāgai. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Soee) only that person is (dhoorat-u = dhur = source + rat = imbued) imbued with love, i.e. is devoted to God (ji) who (laagai = attaches) yearns for his/her (dhur) source – the Almighty.

(Soi) only that person is (dhudrandhar-u = carries/rubs ash on body) really unattached with the world, and that person (basundhar-u = support of the earth) can save others who (paagai = obtains) drinks (ras) the elixir of (preym) love/obedience of the Almighty (eyk) alone. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate. 

 

ਬਲਬੰਚ ਕਰੈ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਲਾਭੈ ਸੋ ਧੂਰਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ॥ ਸੁਆਰਥੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਅਸਾਰਥਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰੂੜਾ ॥੧॥

Balbancẖ karai na jānai lābẖai so ḏẖūraṯ nahī mūṛĥā. Su▫ārath ṯi▫āg asārath racẖi▫o nah simrai parabẖ rūṛā. ||1||

 

One who (karai) practices (balbanch) deceit, i.e. rubs ash on the body to show he is an ascetic, does not (jaanai) know (laabhai) what is beneficial; he is not (dhoorat-u) a renouncer but (moorrha) foolish.

He (tiaag-i) forsakes (suaarath-u) what is beneficial and (rachio) remains engrossed (asaarath-i) in what is harmful; he does not (simrai = remember) keep in mind (roorra = beautiful) the useful instructions of (prabh-u) the Master. 1.

 

ਸੋਈ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਸੋ ਸੂਰਾ ਸੋ ਦਾਨਾਂ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ॥੨॥੬੭॥੯੦॥
So▫ī cẖaṯur si▫āṇā pandiṯ so sūrā so ḏānāʼn. Sāḏẖsang jin har har japi▫o Nānak so parvānā. ||2||67||90||

 

(Soi) that person is (chatur-u) clever, (siaana) wise and (pandit-u) scholar of scriptures; (so) that person is (soora) warrior – combats evil – and (daanaa-n) is well informed; (jin-i) who (japio) remembers and practices (har-i = dispels evil) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Divine virtues and commands; (so) such a person (parvaana) is accepted by the world as genuine and by God for union, says fifth Nanak. 2. 67. 90.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. Practice of (har-i = dispels evil) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) rejuvenating Divine virtues and commands is (jeevan-i = life) the way of living of (sant janaa) the seekers of the Almighty.

Being among (ras) objects of (bikhai = vice) base (bhog) pleasures, they bathe in (saagar) the ocean/pool of (amrit) sweet (sukh) comfort/solace, i.e. keep themselves untouched by vices; they (peevan-i) drink (ras-u) the elixir of, i.e. live by, Naam of (raam) the Almighty,

ਸੰਚਨਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਰਤਨਾ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸੀਵਨਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਰਾਂਗ ਭਏ ਮਨ ਲਾਲਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰਸ ਖੀਵਨਿ ॥੧॥

Sancẖan rām nām ḏẖan raṯnā man ṯan bẖīṯar sīvan. Har rang rāʼng bẖa▫e man lālā rām nām ras kẖīvan. ||1||

 

They (sanchan-i) accumulate (dhan-u) the wealth of (ratna) jewels of Naam, i.e. live more and more by, Naam of the Almighty; they (seevan = stitch) practice it (bheetar-i) in (man = mind) thoughts and (tan = body) deeds.

(Raang) being imbued with (rang) love of (har-i) the Almighty their (man) the minds (bhaey) become (laala) red flower, i.e. blossom with love; they are (kheevan-i) intoxicated with (ras) the elixir of Raam Naam, i.e. are ever absorbed in living by virtues and commands of the Almighty. 1.  

 

ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਸਿਉ ਉਰਝਾਨੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੀਵਨਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਹਰਿ ਬੂੰਦ ਪਾਨ ਸੁਖ ਥੀਵਨਿ ॥੨॥੬੮॥੯੧॥

Ji▫o mīnā jal si▫o urjẖāno rām nām sang līvan. Nānak sanṯ cẖāṯrik kī ni▫ā▫ī har būnḏ pān sukẖ thīvan. ||2||68||91||

 

(Jio) like (meena) the fish (urjhaano = entangled) is attached (sio) with (jal) water, they remain (leevan-i) absorbed (sang-i) with practice of Raam Naam.

(Sant) the seekers are (ki niaai) like (chaatrik) the rain-bird – who yearns for the drop rain to fall in its mouth – they (theevan-i) get (sukh) comfort by (paan) drinking (boond) a drop of (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. they find comfort from practice of Naam, says fifth Nanak. 2. 68. 91.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Har ke nāmhīn beṯāl.  Jeṯā karan karāvan ṯeṯā sabẖ banḏẖan janjāl. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. Those (naamheen – naam = virtues and commands + heen = bereft) bereft of awareness Naam of (har-i) the Almighty are (beytaal = bey = without, taal = beat) out of tune, i.e. are direction-less – they wander aimlessly. (Jeyta = as much) whatever they (karan) do or (karaavan) get done, (sabh-i) all (teyta = that much) that is because of (bandhan = bondages) caught in numerous (janjaal) entanglements. 1.

ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਤ ਅਨ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕਾਟੈ ਕਾਲ ॥ ਜਬ ਜਮੁ ਆਇ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਤਬ ਤੁਮਰੋ ਕਉਨੁ ਹਵਾਲ ॥੧॥

Bin parabẖ sev karaṯ an sevā birthā kātai kāl. Jab jam ā▫e sangẖārai parānī ṯab ṯumro ka▫un havāl. ||1||

 

One who, (bin-u = without) instead of (seyv = serving) being in obedience to (parabh) the Almighty (karat) does (seyva) service of (an) others, i.e. engages in rituals or worship of gods/goddesses, s/he (kaattai) spends/wastes (kaal = time) life (birtha) in vain.

O (praani) creature, when (jam-u) the agent of Divine justice (aaey) comes and (sanghaarai) hits, i.e. when you have face consequences of your deeds, (tab) then (kaun-u) what will be (tumro) your (havaal/haal) state, i.e. who would save you, since you have forsaken God? 1.

 

ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਦਾਸ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥ ਸੁਖ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਧਨ ਮਾਲ ॥੨॥੬੯॥੯੨॥

Rākẖ leho ḏās apune ka▫o saḏā saḏā kirpāl. Sukẖ niḏẖān Nānak parabẖ merā sāḏẖsang ḏẖan māl. ||2||69||92||

 

O Almighty, You are (sadaa sadaa) forever (kirpal) kind; please (raakh leyhu) protect (apuney = own) Your (daas = servant) devotee from committing transgressions.

(Prabh) the Almighty Master (meyra = my) of all is (nidhaan) the treasure of (sukh) peace/comforts; this (dhan maal) wealth is obtained through (saadhsang-i) joining holy congregation – where virtues and commands of the Almighty are recounted and learnt to practice, says fifth Nanak. 2. 69. 92.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Man ṯan rām ko bi▫uhār.  Parem bẖagaṯ gun gāvan gīḏẖe pohaṯ nah sansār. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Man-i) mind and (tan-i) body of seekers of the Almighty do (biohaar-u) business (ko) of, i.e. the seekers think and conduct themselves, according to commands of (raam) the Almighty.

(Geedhey) engrossed in (preym) loving (bahagt-i) devotion, they (gaavan = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues of the Almighty; temptations of (sansaar) the world do not (pohat) influence them. 1.

ਸ੍ਰਵਣੀ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਇਹੁ ਸਾਧ ਕੋ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਅਸਥਿਤਿ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਕੋ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

Sarvaṇī kīrṯan simran su▫āmī ih sāḏẖ ko ācẖār. Cẖaran kamal asthiṯ riḏ anṯar pūjā parān ko āḏẖār. ||1||

 

Listening to (keertan-u) praises of (suaami) the Master (sravni) with ears and (simran-u) keeping them in mind – to act on them; (ihu) this is (aachaar-u) the way of life (ko) of (saadh) the seekers.

They (asthit-i) firmly keep (kamal = lotus, charan = feet) commands of the Almighty (antar-i) in (rid/ridaa) the mind – and act by them; this (pooja) worship is (aadhaar-u) the mainstay of (praan) life. 1.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪਨੀ ਧਾਰੁ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਉਚਰਉ ਨਿਤ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥੭੦॥੯੩॥

Parabẖ ḏīn ḏa▫i▫āl sunhu benanṯī kirpā apnī ḏẖār. Nām niḏẖān ucẖara▫o niṯ rasnā Nānak saḏ balihār. ||2||70||93||

 

O (prab) Almighty, You are (daiaa) compassionate to (deen) hapless persons like me; (sunahu = listen) this is my (beynanti) request: Please (dhaar) bestow (apni = own) Your (kirpa) kindness, that I (nit-u) ever (uchrau) utter (rasna) with the tongue, and practice, Naam, (nidhaan-u) the treasure of solace; I (sad) ever (balihaar = am sacrifice) adore You, submits fifth Nanak. 2. 70. 93.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Har ke nāmhīn maṯ thorī.  Simraṯ nāhi sirīḏẖar ṯẖākur milaṯ anḏẖ ḏukẖ gẖorī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. Those (naam-heen) bereft, i.e. unaware, of Naam or virtues and commands (key) of the Almighty have (thori) little (mat-i) understanding – of how to lead life.

They (naah-i) do not (simrat) recall and obeycommands of (siridhar = master of wealth/world-play) the Almighty (tthaakur) Master; such persons are (andh = blind/ignorant) oblivious of Divine commands – hence commit transgressions – and (milat = receive) are subjected to (ghori) terrible (dukh) suffering – of being put in cycles of births and deaths. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate. 

 

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਭੇਖ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਰੀ ॥ ਤੂਟਤ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਜਿਉ ਗਾਗਰਿ ਜਲ ਫੋਰੀ ॥੧॥

Har ke nām si▫o parīṯ na lāgī anik bẖekẖ baho jorī. Ŧūtaṯ bār na lāgai ṯā ka▫o ji▫o gāgar jal forī. ||1||

 

They do not (laagi) develop/bear (preet-i) love (sio) of/obedience to (har-i) the Almighty; but remain (bahu) greatly (jori = joined) attached to (anik) numerous (bheykh = garbs) pretentious displays of piety.

(Na laagai) it takes no (baar) time (ta kau) for that attachment (toottat) to break when death comes, (jio) like (jal) water does not remain in (gaagar-i) in a pitcher when it (phori) is broken. 1.

 

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਸੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਮਨੁ ਖਚਿਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸ ਖੋਰੀ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਨ ਨ ਹੋਰੀ ॥੨॥੭੧॥੯੪॥

Kar kirpā bẖagaṯ ras ḏījai man kẖacẖiṯ parem ras kẖorī. Nānak ḏās ṯerī sarṇā▫ī parabẖ bin ān na horī. ||2||71||94||

 

O Almighty, (kar-i kirpa) kindly (deejai = give) impart (ras-u = taste) liking (bahagat-i) for devotion/obedience to You, so that my (man-u) mind is (khori) intoxicated with (ras-u) the elixir of (preym) love and remains (khachit) engrossed in obedience to You.

I have placed myself in (teyri) Your (sarnaai = sanctuary) care and obedience; there is not (aan hori) another (bin-u) except You, (prabh) the Almighty, on whom I can rely, submits fifth Nanak. 2. 71. 94.

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਚਿਤਵਉ ਵਾ ਅਉਸਰ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਹੋਇ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਸਾਜਨ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Cẖiṯva▫o vā a▫osar man māhi.  Ho▫e ikaṯar milhu sanṯ sājan guṇ gobinḏ niṯ gāhi. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Maah-i) in my (man) mind, I (chitvau = think of) look forward to (va) that (ausar) opportunity; when I (milahu) join (hoey = got, ikatr = together) congregation of (sant = saints) seeker (saajan) friends; and (nit) ever (gaah-i = sing) praise (gun) virtues of (gobind = master of the world) the Almighty –, and learn to emulate them. 1.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਜੇਤੇ ਕਾਮ ਕਰੀਅਹਿ ਤੇਤੇ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਜਾਂਹਿ ॥ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ਮਨਿ ਮੀਠੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਸਰ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

Bin har bẖajan jeṯe kām karī▫ah ṯeṯe birthe jāʼnhi. Pūran parmānanḏ man mīṯẖo ṯis bin ḏūsar nāhi. ||1||

 

(Jeytey = as many) all (kaam) actions – like rituals and worship of gods/goddesses – that we (kareeah-i) do; (teytey = that many) all those (jaanh-i) go (birthey) in vain (bin-u) except (bhajan) praising and emulating virtues of (har-i) the Almighty.

I find (pooran) the all-pervasive Almighty, (parmaanand = supreme bliss) the bestower of bliss (meettho = sweet) lovable (man-i) by the mind; (naah-i) not (doosar = second) another (bin-u) except (tis-u) That. 1.

 

ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰਮ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਧਨ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਕਛੂਐ ਲਾਹਿ ॥ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਓ ਚਰਨਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੨॥੭੨॥੯੫॥

Jap ṯap sanjam karam sukẖ sāḏẖan ṯul na kacẖẖū▫ai lāhi.  Cẖaran kamal Nānak man beḏẖi▫o cẖarnah sang samāhi. ||2||72||95||

 

(Jap) recitation of mantras, (tap) austerities and other (karam) rituals as (saadhan) means of obtaining (sukh) peace by finding God; (na kachhooai = not any) none is (tul-i) equal to (laah-i) the benefit obtained by praising and emulating Divine virtues.

My (man-u) mind is (beydhio = pierced) in love with (kamal) lotus (charan) feet of the Almighty; and (samaah-i) remains absorbed (sang-i) with God’s (charnah) feet, i.e. being in obedience of the Master, says fifth Nanak. 2. 72. 95.

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੰਗੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥ ਆਗੈ ਕੁਸਲ ਪਾਛੈ ਖੇਮ ਸੂਖਾ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Merā parabẖ sange anṯarjāmī.  Āgai kusal pācẖẖai kẖem sūkẖā simraṯ nām su▫āmī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Prabh-u) the Almighty Master (meyra = my) of all, (antarjaami) knower of minds, is ever (sangey) with me. There is (kusal) comfort (aagai = ahead) in the hereafter, and (kheym) happiness and (sukh) peace (paachhai = behind) in life (simrat) by keeping in mind, and living by, Naam or virtues and commands of (suaami) the Master. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

ਸਾਜਨ ਮੀਤ ਸਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਗੁਨ ਗਪਾਲ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥ ਬਿਸਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਨਿਮਖ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਤੇ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

Sājan mīṯ sakẖā har merai gun gopāl har rā▫i▫ā. Bisar na jā▫ī nimakẖ hirḏai ṯe pūrai gurū milā▫i▫ā. ||1||

 

(Gun) virtues of (raaiaa = king) Sovereign (har-i) Almighty (gopaal = nurturer of the world) Sustainor are (meyrai) my (saajan, meet) friends and (sakhaa) companions, i.e. I ever live by them.  

(Poorai) the perfect guru (milaaiaa = caused to receive) imparted me their awareness; they are not (bisar-i jaaee) forgotten (tey) from (hirdai) the mind even (nimakh) for a moment. 1.

 

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖੇ ਦਾਸ ਅਪਨੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਵਸਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥ ਏਕਾ ਲਿਵ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਭਉ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥੨॥੭੩॥੯੬॥

Kar kirpā rākẖe ḏās apne jī▫a janṯ vas jā kai. Ėkā liv pūran parmesur bẖa▫o nahī Nānak ṯā kai. ||2||73||96||

 

The Almighty under (ja kai) whose (vas-i) domain all (jeea jant) creatures are, (kar-i kirpa) has been kind to (raakhey) protect me (apney = own) IT’s (daas = servant) devotee from vices and hence obviated all fear. 

It shows that anyone who has (eyka = one) single-minded (liv = attention) devotion/obedience of (pooran) the all-pervasive (parmeysur) the Supreme Master; (ta kai = of that) that person has no (bhai) fear – of retribution as s/he does not transgress, says fifth Nanak. 2. 73. 96.
