SGGS pp 1392-1394 Svaeeay Mehley Teejey Key, 1- 9 of 22

 

ਸਵਈਏ ਮਹਲੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਕੇ ੩                ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Sava▫ī▫e mahle ṯīje ke 3   Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

 

(Svaeeay) verses in praise (key) of (teejey) the third (mahaley) Guru.   Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

ਸੋਈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸਿਵਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਛਲੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਭਗਤ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਾਰੇ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ॥ ਤਿਤੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਸਿਕੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਲਹਣਾ ਥਪਿਓ ਜੇਨ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਸਿਧੀ ॥

So▫ī purakẖ sivar sācẖā jā kā ik nām acẖẖal sansāre.  Jin bẖagaṯ bẖavjal ṯāre simrahu so▫ī nām parḏẖān.  Ŧiṯ nām rasik Nānak lahṇā thapi▫o jen sarab siḏẖī.

 

(Sivar-i/simar) remember/obey (soee = that one) the One (purakh-u) Supreme Being (saachaa) Eternal Almighty, obedience to (ja ka) whose Naam (ik-u) alone enables one (achhal-u = undeceivable) not to succumb to temptations (sansaarey) in the world.

(Simrah-u) remember/obey (pardhaan = leader) sublime Naam/virtues and commandments of (soee = that one) the Almighty, (jin-i) which (taarey) ferries across (bhavjal) the world ocean all those (bhagat = devotees) those who live by Naam, i.e. enables to overcome temptations of the world.

Guru Nanak (rasik = lover) enjoyed the practice (naam-i) of Naam; he ensured commitment to Naam as test before he (thapio) installed Lahna as Guru Angad (jeyn/jin) who obtained (srab) all (sidhee) powers – capabilities of the true guru.

 

ਕਵਿ ਜਨ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਸਬੁਧੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਜਨ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਬਿਸ੍ਤਰੀਯਾ ॥

Kav jan kal▫y sabuḏẖī kīraṯ jan Amarḏās bisṯrī▫yā.

 

Similarly because of living by Naam, Guru Angad’s (jan = servant) devotee Amardas became the guru and his (sabudhee = good intellect) wisdom and (keerat-i) glory (bistareeya) spread all over, says (jan) humble (kav-i) poet/bard (kalh) Kal Sahaar.

 

ਕੀਰਤਿ ਰਵਿ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿ ਸੰਸਾਰਹ ਸਾਖ ਤਰੋਵਰ ਮਵਲਸਰਾ ॥ ਉਤਰਿ ਦਖਿਣਹਿ ਪੁਬਿ ਅਰੁ ਪਸ੍ਚਮਿ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰੁ ਜਪੰਥਿ ਨਰਾ ॥

Kīraṯ rav kiraṇ pargat sansārah sākẖ ṯarovar mavalsarā.  Uṯar ḏakẖ▫ṇahi pub ar pascẖam jai jai kār japanth narā.

 

(Keerat-i) glory of Guru Amardas (pragatt-i= manifested) spread (sansaarah) in the world like (kiran-i) rays (rav-i) of the sun or fragrance of flowers on (saakh) branches of the Mavalsar (tarovar) tree.

(Naraa) people (utar-i) in the north, (dakhanah-i) south, (pub-i/poorab) east and (pascham-i) west, i.e. everywhere, (japanth-i = remember) sing (jai jai kaar) glory of Guru Amardas.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਰਦਾਯਉ ਉਲਟਿ ਗੰਗ ਪਸ੍ਚਮਿ ਧਰੀਆ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਛਲੁ ਭਗਤਹ ਭਵ ਤਾਰਣੁ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਫੁਰਿਆ ॥੧॥

Har nām rasan gurmukẖ barāḏ▫ya▫o ulat gang pascẖam ḏẖarī▫ā.  So▫ī nām acẖẖal bẖagṯah bẖav ṯāraṇ Amarḏās gur ka▫o furi▫ā. ||1||

 

Guru Nanak (bardaaiyau) imparted awareness of Naam of (har-i) the Almighty with his (rasan-i) tongue as (gurmukh-i) the guru’s teaching to Guru Angad; he caused (gang) the river Ganga – which flows from west to east – (dhareea) to flow (ultt-i) backwards (pashchim-i) to the west, i.e. taught to give up the then current rituals and revert to remember and obey Naam/Divine virtues and commands.

(Soee) the same Naam which enables one (achhal-u = undeceivable) not to succumb to temptations (sansaarey) in the world, and acts as (taaran-u) ship to ferry across (bhav) the world-ocean to God, (phuriaa = came to mind) was received from Guru Angad and practiced by Guru Amardas. 1.

 

ਸਿਮਰਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਖ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਅਰੁ ਕਿੰਨਰ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਹਰਾ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਹਿ ਨਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਤ੍ਰ ਅਵਰ ਧ੍ਰੂ ਮੰਡਲ ਨਾਰਦਾਦਿ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦਿ ਵਰਾ ॥

Simrahi so▫ī nām jakẖ▫y ar kinnar sāḏẖik siḏẖ samāḏẖ harā.  Simrahi nakẖ▫yaṯar avar ḏẖarū mandal nārḏāḏ parahlāḏ varā.

 

Jakhya (ar-u) and Kinnar, the associates of the gods, (saadhik) seekers and (sidh) saints, (samaadh-i) in deep meditation like (haraa) Shiva, (simrah-i) remember (soee) the same Naam, i.e. remember/obey God.

(Nakkhyatr) stars and (avar-u) other (manddal) galaxy of which (dhroo) the pole star is part of, (simrah-i) exist in obedience to Naam, i.e. cosmic laws; as do (varaa) great saints like, (naardaad-i) Naarada and Prahilaad.

 

ਸਸੀਅਰੁ ਅਰੁ ਸੂਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਲਾਸਹਿ ਸੈਲ ਲੋਅ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਧਰਿਆ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਛਲੁ ਭਗਤਹ ਭਵ ਤਾਰਣੁ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਫੁਰਿਆ ॥੨॥

Sasī▫ar ar sūr nām ulāsėh sail lo▫a jin uḏẖri▫ā.  So▫ī nām acẖẖal bẖagṯah bẖav ṯāraṇ Amarḏās gur ka▫o furi▫ā. ||2||

 

(Saseear-u) the moon (ar-u) and (soor-u) the sun (ulaasah-i = zealously) meticulously obey Naam, i.e. ever function by the Cosmic laws, (jin-i) by obeying which (sail = rocks, lok = people) those loaded with vices are (udhar-i) saved.

(Soee) the same Naam which enables one (achhal-u = undeceivable) not to succumb to temptations (sansaarey) in the world, and acts as (taaran-u) ship to ferry across (bhav) the world-ocean to God, (phuriaa = came to mind) was received from Guru Angad and practiced by Guru Amardas. 2.

 

ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਵਰਿ ਨਵ ਨਾਥ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸਿਵ ਸਨਕਾਦਿ ਸਮੁਧਰਿਆ ॥ ਚਵਰਾਸੀਹ ਸਿਧ ਬੁਧ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਾਤੇ ਅੰਬਰੀਕ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰਿਆ ॥

So▫ī nām sivar nav nāth niranjan siv sankāḏ samuḏẖri▫ā.  Cẖavrāsīh siḏẖ buḏẖ jiṯ rāṯe ambrīk bẖavjal ṯari▫ā.

 

Followers of (nav) the nine (naath) Naath Yogis, (siv) Shiva, sages (sankaad-i) like Sanak (samudhriaa) were emancipated (sivar-i) by remembrance/obedience to (soee) the same (niranjan-u = unstained) pristine Naam.

(Raatey) imbued by (jit-u = which) the same Naam, (chavraaseeh) the eighty four types of (sidh) yogis, (budh) Buddha, and devotees like (ambreek) Amreek (tariaa= swam) got across (bhavjal-u) the world-ocean, i.e. overcame temptations in the world-play.

 

ਉਧਉ ਅਕ੍ਰੂਰੁ ਤਿਲੋਚਨੁ ਨਾਮਾ ਕਲਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਹਰਿਆ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਛਲੁ ਭਗਤਹ ਭਵ ਤਾਰਣੁ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਫੁਰਿਆ ॥੩॥

Uḏẖa▫o akrūr ṯilocẖan nāmā kal Kabīr kilvikẖ hari▫ā.  So▫ī nām acẖẖal bẖagṯah bẖav ṯāraṇ Amarḏās gur ka▫o furi▫ā. ||3||

 

By following the same Naam the Kaliyug devotees Oodhau, Akroor, Tilochan/Trilochan, (naama) Namdev and Kabir (hariaa = took away) got rid of (kilvikh) transgressions.

(Soee) the same Naam which enables one (achhal-u = undeceivable) not to succumb to temptations (sansaarey) in the world, and acts as (taaran-u) ship to ferry across (bhav) the world-ocean to God, (phuriaa = came to mind) was received from Guru Angad and practiced by Guru Amardas. 3.

 

ਤਿਤੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗਿ ਤੇਤੀਸ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਜਤੀ ਤਪੀਸੁਰ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਗੰਗੇਵ ਪਿਤਾਮਹ ਚਰਣ ਚਿਤ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਿਆ ॥

Ŧiṯ nām lāg ṯeṯīs ḏẖi▫āvahi jaṯī ṯapīsur man vasi▫ā.  So▫ī nām simar gangev piṯāmėh cẖaraṇ cẖiṯ amriṯ rasi▫ā.

 

(Teytees = thirty three) the thirty three crore gods of Hindu belief (dhiaavah-i) invoke the Almighty (laag-i = attached) keeping in mind (tit-u) that (naam-i) Naam/Divine virtues and commands; (jatee) the celibates, (tapeesur) great practitioners of austerities, all have Naam (vasiaa) abiding (man-i) in mind.

(Simar-i) by keeping in mind (sooee) the same Naam (amrit) nectar, i.e. love for, (charan = feet) obedience to the Almighty (rasiaa) permeated (chit) mind of Bhishama (gangeyv) son of Ganga, and (pitaamah) the grandfather – of both Kauravas and Pandavas of the Mahabharata.

 

ਤਿਤੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਗਰੂਅ ਮਤਿ ਸਤ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਉਧਰੀਆ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਛਲੁ ਭਗਤਹ ਭਵ ਤਾਰਣੁ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਫੁਰਿਆ ॥੪॥

Ŧiṯ nām gurū gambẖīr garū▫a maṯ saṯ kar sangaṯ uḏẖrī▫ā. So▫ī nām acẖẖal bẖagṯah bẖav ṯāraṇ Amarḏās gur ka▫o furi▫ā. ||4||

 

(Sangat-i) the holy congregation (udhreeaa) rises above temptation by (sat-i = true/inviolable, kar-i = accepting) obeying (garooaa = heavy) sublime (mat-i) counsel of (gambheer) profound Guru Amardas to follow (tit-u) that Naam.

 

(Soee) the same Naam which enables one (achhal-u = undeceivable) not to succumb to temptations (sansaarey) in the world, and acts as (taaran-u) ship to ferry across (bhav) the world-ocean to God, (phuriaa = came to mind) was received from Guru Angad and practiced by Guru Amardas. 4.

 

ਨਾਮ ਕਿਤਿ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਰਵਿ ਸੁਰਤਰ ਸਾਖਹ ॥ ਉਤਰਿ ਦਖਿਣਿ ਪੁਬਿ ਦੇਸਿ ਪਸ੍ਚਮਿ ਜਸੁ ਭਾਖਹ ॥

Nām kiṯ sansār kiraṇ rav surṯar sākẖah.  Uṯar ḏakẖiṇ pub ḏes pascẖam jas bẖākẖah.

 

(Kit-i/keerat-i) glory of Naam is spread (sansaar-i) in the world like (kiran-i) rays (rav-i) of the sun spread light and (saakhah) branches of (surtar = tree in heaven) the Maulsaree tree spread fragrance.

People in (deys-i = countries) places (utar-i) in the north, (dakhin-i) south, (pub-i/poorab-i) east and (paschim) south, i.e. everywhere (bhaakhah = utter) sing (jas-u) the eulogy of Naam, i.e. acknowledge the efficacy of living by Naam in obtaining peace.

 

ਜਨਮੁ ਤ ਇਹੁ ਸਕਯਥੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਵਾਸੈ ॥ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬ ਛਿਅ ਦਰਸਨ ਆਸਾਸੈ ॥

Janam ṯa ih sakyath jiṯ nām har riḏai nivāsai.  Sur nar gaṇ ganḏẖarab cẖẖi▫a ḏarsan āsāsai.

 

(Ih-u) this (janam-u) human birth is (ta) then (sakyath-u) successful – in finding God – (jit-u) when one (nivaasai = abides) keeps (ridai) in mind Naam/virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty – as guide.

For which Naam (sur-i) gods, (nar) humans, (gandharb) singers of gods and those belonging to (chhia) six (darsan) philosophies – Yogis, Sanyasi, Jangam, Bodhi, Sreyvrrey, Bairaagi, all (aasaasai) yearn.

 

ਭਲਉ ਪ੍ਰਸਿਧੁ ਤੇਜੋ ਤਨੌ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਜੋੜਿ ਕਰ ਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਇਅਓ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਗਤ ਭਵਜਲ ਹਰਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਤੈ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੫॥

Bẖala▫o parsiḏẖ ṯejo ṯanou kal▫y joṛ kar ḏẖeā▫i▫o.  So▫ī nām bẖagaṯ bẖavjal haraṇ gur Amarḏās ṯai pā▫i▫o. ||5||

 

(Jorr-i) with folded (kar) hands (kalh) Kal Sahaar (dhhiaaiau) invokes (prasidh-u) the famous (tanou) son of (teyjo) Tejh Bhaan of (bhalau) Bhalaa clan and says,

O Guru Amardas, (tai) you (paaio) have obtained awareness of (soee) that Naam which (haran-u = takes away) frees (bhagat) the devotees from (bhavjal) the world-ocean, i.e. obviates rebirth. 5.

 

ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਦੇਵ ਤੇਤੀਸ ਅਰੁ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸਿਧ ਨਰ ਨਾਮਿ ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਧਾਰੇ ॥ ਜਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਧਿਓ ਹਰਖੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਸਹਾਰੇ ॥

Nām ḏẖi▫āvahi ḏev ṯeṯīs ar sāḏẖik siḏẖ nar nām kẖand barahmand ḏẖāre.  Jah nām samāḏẖi▫o harakẖ sog sam kar sahāre.

 

(Teytees = thirty three) the thirty three crore (seyv) gods – of Hindu faith -, (saadhik) seekers (ar-u) and (sidh) yogis (dhiaavah-i) pay attention to Naam; (khandd) components and whole, of (brahmandd) universes (dhaarey = supported) exist in space according (naam-i) to Naam/cosmic laws.

(Jah) those who keep Naam (samaadhio = meditate) in mind, they (sahaarey) bear (harakh-u) joy and (sog-u) sorrow (kar-i = treat, sam = equal) alike.

 

ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਰੋਮਣਿ ਸਰਬ ਮੈ ਭਗਤ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਅਮਰ ਗੁਰ ਤੁਸਿ ਦੀਓ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੬॥

Nām siromaṇ sarab mai bẖagaṯ rahe liv ḏẖār.  So▫ī nām paḏārath amar gur ṯus ḏī▫o karṯār. ||6||

 

Naam is (siroman-i) supreme (mai) amongst (sarab) all, on which (bhagat) the devotees (rahey) keep (liv) focus (dhaar-i) fixed – as means to find the Almighty.

(Kartaar-i) the Creator (tus-i) was pleased to (deeo) give awareness of (soee) that (padaarath-u = substance) valuable Naam to (gur) Guru (amar) Amardas. 6.

 

ਸਤਿ ਸੂਰਉ ਸੀਲਿ ਬਲਵੰਤੁ ਸਤ ਭਾਇ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਘਨ ਗਰੂਅ ਮਤਿ ਨਿਰਵੈਰਿ ਲੀਣਾ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਧਵਲੁ ਧੁਜਾ ਸੇਤਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਬੀਣਾ ॥

Saṯ sūra▫o sīl balvanṯ saṯ bẖā▫e sangaṯ sagẖan garū▫a maṯ nirvair līṇā.  Jis ḏẖīraj ḏẖur ḏẖaval ḏẖujā seṯ baikunṯẖ bīṇā.

 

Guru Amardas is (soorau = warrior) practitioner (sat-i) truthful living, (seel-i) of amiable disposition, (balvant) strong to resist temptations, (sat = true) sincere (bhaaey) nature, has (saghan = thick) large (sangat-i) congregation/following; he has (garooa) deep/profound (mat-i) understanding of ways of the Almighty, ever (leena) absorbed (nirvair-i = in free of antagonism) in the Almighty Master and is friend of all.

He is one (jis-u) who is (dheeraj-u = patience) happy with Divine will (dhur-i) from the beginning, displays (dhaval) white (dhujaa) flag, i.e. is embodiment of peace, and has (beena) constructed/become (seyt-i) bridge to (baikuntth = abode of Vishnu – metaphor for) the Almighty’s abode – over the ocean of temptations of the world -, i.e. leads to union with the Creator.

 

ਪਰਸਹਿ ਸੰਤ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਜਿਹ ਕਰਤਾਰਹ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਵਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਅਮਰਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਤਉ ਜੋਗੁ ॥੭॥

Parsėh sanṯ pi▫ār jih karṯārėh sanjog.  Saṯgurū sev sukẖ pā▫i▫o amar gur kīṯa▫o jog. ||7||

 

(Sant = saints) the seekers (piaar-u) lovingly come to (parsah-i) see the Guru (jih) who has (sanjog-u) association, i.e. who is one, (kartaarah) with the Creator, i.e. see him as embodiment of the Creator.

They (seyv-i = serve) obey (satiguru) the true guru, and (paaiao) obtain (sukh-u) peace; (gur-i) Guru (amar-i) Amardas (keetau) makes them (jog-u) capable – to find God and attain peace. 7.

 

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸ ਖਾਣੁ ਅਰੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਚਾਯ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਸ੍ਟ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਧਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਸਾਇ ਗਤਿ ਅਗਮ ਜਾਣੀ ॥

Nām nāvaṇ nām ras kẖāṇ ar bẖojan nām ras saḏā cẖā▫y mukẖ mist baṇī.  Ḏẖan saṯgur sevi▫o jis pasā▫e gaṯ agam jāṇī.

 

Guru Amardas teaches that practice of Naam/Divine virtues (naavan = bath) the purifier; (ras= taste) love for Naam is (khaan-u) eating and love for Naam is (bhojan-u) food – sustenance/guide for the soul; (mistt) the sweet (baanee) words (mukh-i) from mouth of Guru Ramdas (sadaa) ever create (chaaey) fondness for Naam.

(Dhan-i) blessed are those who (seyviaa = serve) follow (satigur-u) the true guru Amardas, by (jis-u) whose (pasaaey) grace/guidance (gat-i) state of the otherwise (agam) comprehensible Almighty is (jaanee) known, i.e. one gets awareness of Naam of the Almighty, and Divine presence within and without.

 

ਕੁਲ ਸੰਬੂਹ ਸਮੁਧਰੇ ਪਾਯਉ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥ ਸਕਯਥੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯੁਚਰੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਸ੍ਯ੍ਯਿਉ ਅਮਰ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੮॥

Kul sambūh samuḏẖre pā▫ya▫o nām nivās.  Sakyath janam kal▫yucẖrai gur paras▫yi▫o amar pargās. ||8||

 

One who (paaeyo) attains (nivaas-u = abode) state of being absorbed in Naam, (sambooh) all his/her (kul) lineage (samudhrey – sam = well + udhrey = rise) gets a good name.

(Kalyuchrai – Kaly-u = Kal Sahaar + uchrai = says) Says Kal Sahaar: One who (parsiyo) sees – and follows the example of (pragaas-u) enlightened (gur-u) guru (amar) Amardas, his/her (janam-u) human birth (sakyath-u) is useful/successful – in finding the Creator. 8.

ਬਾਰਿਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਦਾਹਿਣੈ ਸਿਧਿ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਖੁ ਜੋਵੈ ॥ ਰਿਧਿ ਬਸੈ ਬਾਂਵਾਂਗਿ ਜੁ ਤੀਨਿ ਲੋਕਾਂਤਰ ਮੋਹੈ ॥

Bārij kar ḏāhiṇai siḏẖ sanmukẖ mukẖ jovai.  Riḏẖ basai bāʼnvāʼng jo ṯīn lokānṯar mohai.

 

Guru Amardas has (baarij-u) a lotus sign on (daahinai) the right (kar-i) hand, – indication of being renowned in palmistry -, i.e. the guru is so great that, (sidh-u) occult powers stand (sanmukh) in front and (jovai) look at (mukh-u) the face of Guru Amardas – asking what should be done.

(Ridh-u) powers to call wealth (j-u) which (mohai) charm creatures (teen-i = three, lokaantar = regions – land, water, space) the whole world, i.e. which everyone wishes to have, (basai) abide (baavaang-i) in the left hand of the Guru.

 

ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸੈ ਅਕਹੀਉ ਸੋਇ ਰਸੁ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਜਾਤਉ ॥ ਮੁਖਹੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਉਚਰੈ ਅਮਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਇਤੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਉ ॥

Riḏai basai ak▫hī▫o so▫e ras ṯin hī jāṯa▫o.  Mukẖahu bẖagaṯ ucẖrai amar gur iṯ rang rāṯa▫o.

 

(Akaheeau) the indescribable Almighty (basai) abides in his (ridai) mind; (tin = that, hi = alone) only Guru Amardas (jaatau) knows (ras-u = taste) experience/joy of (soey) that.

(Raatau) imbued with (it-u) this (rang-i) love, Guru Amardas (uchrai = utters) sings (bhagat-i = devotion) songs of praise (mukhahu) with the mouth.

 

ਮਸਤਕਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ਸਚਉ ਕਰਮੁ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਜੋੜਿ ਕਰ ਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਇਅਉ ॥ ਪਰਸਿਅਉ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਸਰਬ ਇਛ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਅਉ ॥੯॥

Masṯak nīsāṇ sacẖa▫o karam kal▫y joṛ kar ḏẖeā▫i▫a▫o.  Parsi▫o gurū saṯgur ṯilak sarab icẖẖ ṯin pā▫i▫a▫o. ||9||

 

Gur Amardas has (neesaan-u) sign of (sachau = true) Divine (karam-u) grace (mastak-i) on the forehead; (kalya) Kal Sahaar (dhyaaeyo) invokes him (jorr-i) with folded (kar-i) hands.

One who (parsiau) sees and follows (tilak-u = frontal mark) the exalted (satigur) true guru, (tin-i) that person (paaiau) obtains fulfilment of (sarab) all (ichh) wishes, i.e. is at peace in life and finally finds the Almighty. 9.

ਸਵਈਏ ਮਹਲੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਕੇ ੨        ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

 

(Savaeeay) verses in praise (key) of (doojey) the Second (mahaley) Guru – by the Bhatt/bard Kal Shaar.   Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

 

ਸੋਈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ਕਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੋ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਧੰਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਤੁਮ ਧਰਿਓ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਥੋ ॥

So▫ī purakẖ ḏẖan karṯā kāraṇ karṯār karaṇ samratho. Saṯgurū ḏẖan Nānak masṯak ṯum ḏẖari▫o jin hatho.

 

Invoking (dha’nn-u) the great (soee) One (purakh-u) Supreme Being (karta) the doer, (samratho) Omnipotent (kartaar-u) Creator, (karan) the maker of (kaaran) causes, i.e. who makes all things to happen.

My obeisance to (dha’nn-u) the blessed (satiguru) true guru Nanak, (jin-i) who (dhario) placed his (hatho) hand on (tum) your (mastak-i) forehead, i.e. blessed you/anointed you the guru.

 

ਤ ਧਰਿਓ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਥੁ, ਸਹਜਿ ਅਮਿਉ ਵੁਠਉ ਛਜਿ, ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਗਣ ਮੁਨਿ ਬੋਹਿਯ ਅਗਾਜਿ ॥

Ŧa ḏẖari▫o masṯak hath sahj ami▫o vuṯẖ▫o cẖẖaj sur nar gaṇ mun bohiy agāj.

 

(Ta = then) as soon as Guru Nanak placed his hand on your (mastak-i) forehead, (amrit) Divine nectar (sahj-i) a steadily (vutthau) fell (chhaj-i) in plenty, i.e. the guru-spirit was passed on to you; which (bohiya) fragrance/ experience (agaaj-i = not manifested) is not obtained by (sur-i nar) god-like persons, (gan) servants of gods, (mun-i) sages.

 

ਮਾਰਿਓ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਗਰਜਿ, ਧਾਵਤੁ ਲੀਓ ਬਰਜਿ, ਪੰਚ ਭੂਤ ਏਕ ਘਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇ ਸਮਜਿ ॥

Māri▫o kantak kāl garaj ḏẖāvaṯ lī▫o baraj pancẖ bẖūṯ ek gẖar rākẖ le samaj.

 

(Garaj-i) with your roar/commands/guidance, you (leeo baraj-i/varaj) restrained (dhaavat = running) the unsteady mind, (samaj-i) got hold of (panch) the five (bhoot) sensory organs, (raakh-i ley) kept them in (eyk) one (ghar-i = house) place, i.e. protected them from wavering under influence of temptations, and thus (maario) killed, i.e. obviated the soul being taken by (kanttak-u = thorn) the tormenting (kaal-u/jam) messenger of Divine justice.

 

ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤਉ ਗੁਰ ਦੁਆਰਿ, ਖੇਲਹਿ ਸਮਤ ਸਾਰਿ, ਰਥੁ ਉਨਮਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਰਾਖਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਲ ਸਹਾਰ, ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਮਝਾਰ, ਲਹਣਾ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

Jag jīṯa▫o gur ḏu▫ār kẖelėh samaṯ sār rath unman liv rākẖ nirankār.  Kaho kīraṯ kal sahār sapaṯ ḏīp majẖār lahṇā jagṯar gur paras murār. ||1||

 

You (jeetau) have conquered (jag) the world (duaar-i) through – guidance of – (gur) Guru Nanak; you (kheylah-i) play (saar-i = pieces in the game of Chauparr) the game of (samat) equality, i.e. see the Almighty in everyone; riding (rath-u) the chariot of (liv) attention of (unman-i) the devoted mind, you (raakh-i) keep (nirankaar) the Formless Almighty in mind, i.e. conduct yourself by Divine commands..

(Kahu) say, o Kal Sahaar: (Keerat-i = praise) glorify Lahna/Guru Angad has spread (majhaar) in (sapat) the seven (deep = islands) continents – the whole world; (paras-i = touch) by following Guru Nanak (muraar-i = Almighty – metaphor) the embodiment of the Almighty, became (gur-u) the guru (jagatr) of the world. 1.

 

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰ, ਕਾਲੁਖ ਖਨਿ ਉਤਾਰ, ਤਿਮਰ ਅਗ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਦਰਸ ਦੁਆਰ ॥ ਓਇ ਜੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਰੁ, ਗਾਖੜੀ ਬਿਖਮ ਕਾਰ, ਤੇ ਨਰ ਭਵ ਉਤਾਰਿ ਕੀਏ ਨਿਰਭਾਰ ॥

Jā kī ḏarisat amriṯ ḏẖār kālukẖ kẖan uṯār ṯimar ag▫yān jāhi ḏaras ḏu▫ār.  O▫e jo sevėh sabaḏ sār gākẖ▫ṛī bikẖam kār ṯe nar bẖav uṯār kī▫e nirbẖār.

 

Guru Anagad (ja = who, ki = of) whose (amrit) life-giving (dristt-i = sight, dhaar = stream) sight of grace/guidance (khan-i = uproots, utaar = removes) gets rid of (kaalukh = soot) wrong-doings, (timar) darkness of (agyaan) ignorance with (daras) sight of (duaar) house, i.e. by seeing and following his example.

(Oey) those (j-u) who perform (gaakhrree, bikham) the difficult (kaar) task, i.e. dissolve ego, and (seyvah-i = serve) obey (saar-u) the Supreme (sabad-u = word) Divine commands as taught by the guru, (tey) those (nar) persons (utaar-i) remove attachments to (bhav) the world, (keeay) make themselves (nirbhaar = without load) free of the load of vices – and are enabled to get across the world-ocean to God.

 

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਸਾਰਿ, ਜਾਗੀਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ, ਨਿੰਮਰੀ ਭੂਤ ਸਦੀਵ ਪਰਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਲ ਸਹਾਰ, ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਮਝਾਰ, ਲਹਣਾ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

Saṯsangaṯ sahj sār jāgīle gur bīcẖār nimmrī bẖūṯ saḏīv param pi▫ār.  Kaho kīraṯ kal sahār sapaṯ ḏīp majẖār lahṇā jagṯar gur paras murār. ||2||

 

(Satsangat) the holy congregation of the guru provides (sahaj) steadfast (saar-i) support; one (jaageeley = awakened) is enlightened by (beechaar-i) reflecting on teachings of (gur) the guru, and develops (ni’mmree) humble (bhoot) nature; s/he is imbued with (kahu) say (piaar-i) love of (param) the Supreme Master (sadeev) forever.

ਸਾਰੁ, ਰਹਹਿ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਜਲ ਪਦਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥

Ŧai ṯa▫o ḏariṛa▫o nām apār bimal jās bithār sāḏẖik siḏẖ sujan jī▫ā ko aḏẖār.  Ŧū ṯā janik rājā a▫uṯār sabaḏ sansār sār rahėh jagṯar jal paḏam bīcẖār.

 

(Tai) you (tau) surely (derirrio) have firm commitment to Naam/virtues and commands of (apaar-u = without far end) the Infinite; your (bimal = clean) pristine (jaas-u) fame (bithhar/visthaar) has spread; you are (adhaar-u) support – role model for – (saadhak) seekers, (sidh) saints and (sujan) good/holy (jeeaa = creatures) persons.

(Too) you (taa) surely (autaar-u = incarnation) have nature like the saintly (raaja) king Janak; your (sabad-u = word) teachings are (saar-u = support) guide (sansaar-i) for the world; those who follow you (rahah-i) remain unattached to (jagatr) the world (beechaar = thought) like (padam) the lotus flower in (jal) water.

 

ਕਲਿਪ ਤਰੁ ਰੋਗ ਬਿਦਾਰੁ, ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤਾਪ ਨਿਵਾਰੁ, ਆਤਮਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਲ ਸਹਾਰ, ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਮਝਾਰ, ਲਹਣਾ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
Kalip ṯar rog biḏār sansār ṯāp nivār āṯmā ṯaribaḏẖ ṯerai ek liv ṯār.  Kaho kīraṯ kal sahār sapaṯ ḏīp majẖār lahṇā jagṯar gur paras murār. ||3||

 

Your teachings to obey the Almighty are like (kalip/kalap) wish-fulfilling (tar-u) tree, they (bidaar) drive away (rog = ailments) vices; they (nivaar-u) remove (taap = ailments) the pain of Aadh-i = mental, Biaadh-i = physical and Upaadh-i = delusional ailments of (sanasaar) the world and cured of (tribidh-i) the three attributes; (liv) attention of (teyrai) your mind remains (taar = stream) continuously fixed on (eyk) the One Almighty.

(Kahu) say, o Kal Sahaar: (Keerat-i = praise) glorify Lahna/Guru Angad has spread (majhaar) in (sapat) the seven (deep = islands) continents – the whole world; (paras-i = touch) by following Guru Nanak (muraar-i = Almighty – metaphor) the embodiment of the Almighty, became (gur-u) the guru (jagatr) of the world. 3.

 

ਤੈ ਤਾ ਹਦਰਥਿ ਪਾਇਓ ਮਾਨੁ, ਸੇਵਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ, ਸਾਧਿ ਅਜਗਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਉਨਮਾਨੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸ ਸਮਾਨ, ਆਤਮਾ ਵੰਤਗਿਆਨ, ਜਾਣੀਅ ਅਕਲ ਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਵਾਨ ॥

Ŧai ṯā haḏrath pā▫i▫o mān sevi▫ā gur parvān sāḏẖ ajgar jin kī▫ā unmān.  Har har ḏaras samān āṯmā vanṯgi▫ān jāṇī▫a akal gaṯ gur parvān.

 

What can I say, (ta) after all (tai) you (paaio) received (maan-u = honour) recognition (hadrath-i/hazrat) from the Supreme Guru Nanak; you served/obeyed (parvaan-u = accepted) the established guru (jin-i) who (saadh-i) controlled (ajgar-u = big serpent) the egoistic mind and (keeaa) made it (unman-i) devoted to God.

Your (daras = sight) qualities are (samaan) like (har-i har-i) the Almighty; your (aatma = soul) mind is (vantgiaan/giaan-vant = knowledgeable) enlightened; you (jaaneea) know (gat-i) state of (akal) wisdom of (parvaan = accepted) the established guru. 

 

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅਚਲ ਠਾਣ, ਬਿਮਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਸੁਥਾਨ, ਪਹਿਰਿ ਸੀਲ ਸਨਾਹੁ ਸਕਤਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਲ ਸਹਾਰ, ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਮਝਾਰ, ਲਹਣਾ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੪॥

Jā kī ḏarisat acẖal ṯẖāṇ bimal buḏẖ suthān pahir sīl sanāhu sakaṯ biḏār.  Kaho kīraṯ kal sahār sapaṯ ḏīp majẖār lahṇā jagṯar gur paras murār. ||4||

 

You are the guru (ja ki) whose (dristt-i) sight was fixed on (achal = unshakable, tthaan = place) on the Almighty; your (bimal) unstained (budh-i = intellect) mind is fixed on (suthhaan = good place) abode of the Almighty; you (pahar-i) wear (sanaah-u) the armour of (seel) good conduct to keep (sakat-i = material tendencies) temptations (bidaar-i) away.

(Kahu) say, o Kal Sahaar: (Keerat-i = praise) glorify Lahna/Guru Angad has spread (majhaar) in (sapat) the seven (deep = islands) continents – the whole world; (paras-i = touch) by following Guru Nanak (muraar-i = Almighty – metaphor) the embodiment of the Almighty, became (gur-u) the guru (jagatr) of the world. 4.

 

ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਧਰਤ, ਤਮ ਹਰਨ, ਦਹਨ ਅਘ, ਪਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਨਾਸਨ ॥ ਸਬਦ ਸੂਰ ਬਲਵੰਤ, ਕਾਮ ਅਰੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਨਾਸਨ ॥

Ḏarisat ḏẖaraṯ ṯam haran ḏahan agẖ pāp parnāsan.  Sabaḏ sūr balvanṯ kām ar kroḏẖ bināsan.

 

Your (dharat = casting) bestowing (dristt-i = sight) grace, i.e. guidance, (haran) removes (tam = darkness) ignorance, (dahan = burns) removes (agh) sins and (pranaasan) destroys (paap) transgressions.

Following Your  

You (balvant = strong, soor= warrior) keep your (sabad) word – an idiom, i.e. practice what you teach, and help to (binaasan) destroy/be rid of (kaam) lust (ar-u) and (krodh) anger.

 

ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਵਸਿ ਕਰਣ, ਸਰਣ ਜਾਚਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਣ ॥ ਆਤਮ ਰਤ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਣ, ਕਹਣ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਲ ਢਾਲਣ ॥

Lobẖ moh vas karaṇ saraṇ jācẖik parṯipālaṇ.  Āṯam raṯ sangar▫haṇ kahaṇ amriṯ kal dẖālaṇ.

 

(Lobh) greed and (moh) worldly attachments are (vas-i = under control, karan = made) controlled with your grace/guidance; you (pratipaalan) look after (jaachik = needy) those who seek your (saran) sanctuary/care.

You are (sangrahan = gather) increasingly (rat) imbued with love of God (aatam) within, i.e. by Divine messages received within; your (kahan) words are like (amrit) nectar and have (kal) the power (dhhaalan) to mold lives.

 

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਲ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਿਲਕੁ, ਸਤਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੋ ਪੈ ਤਰੈ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਜਗਤ ਫਿਰਣਸੀਹ ਅੰਗਰਉ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਲਹਣਾ ਕਰੈ ॥੫॥

Saṯgurū kal saṯgur ṯilak saṯ lāgai so pai ṯarai.  Gur jagaṯ firaṇsīh angara▫o rāj jog lahṇā karai. ||5||

 

(Tilak = frontal mark) anointment by (satigur) the true guru Nanak gave you (kal) the capability of (satiguru) the true guru himself; you teach (sat-i = truth) Naam/Divine virtues and commands; one who (laagai = attaches) applies the self to compliance of Naam, (so) that person (pai = is put, enters) boards the ship and (tarai = swims) gets across the world-ocean to God.

Lahna (phiranseeh) the lion-like son of Bhaee Pheyroo, became (angrau) Angad (gur-u) guru of the world and (karai) practiced (raaj) royal (jog) Yoga, i.e. being a householder absorbed in/obeying God. 5.

ਸਦਾ ਅਕਲ ਲਿਵ ਰਹੈ, ਕਰਨ ਸਿਉ ਇਛਾ ਚਾਰਹ ॥ ਦ੍ਰੁਮ ਸਪੂਰ ਜਿਉ ਨਿਵੈ ਖਵੈ ਕਸੁ ਬਿਮਲ ਬੀਚਾਰਹ ॥

Saḏā akal liv rahai karan si▫o icẖẖā cẖārah.  Ḏarum sapūr ji▫o nivai kẖavai kas bimal bīcẖārėh.

 

Your (liv = attention) mind (sadaa) ever (rahai) remains (akal/akalp = without ideas) free from other ideas; you (chaarah) control (karan) actions (sio = according to) as you (ichhaa) wish.

(Jio) like (drum) a tree (spoor = well filled) bearing fruits (nivai) bends and (khavai) bears (kas-u/kastt) the trouble/load, similarly Guru Angad (beechaarah) thoughts are profound and (bimal) clean, i.e. he undergoes trouble for others.

 

ਇਹੈ ਤਤੁ ਜਾਣਿਓ ਸਰਬ ਗਤਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਬਿਡਾਣੀ ॥ ਸਹਜ ਭਾਇ ਸੰਚਿਓ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਲ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

Ihai ṯaṯ jāṇi▫o sarab gaṯ alakẖ bidāṇī.  Sahj bẖā▫e sancẖi▫o kiraṇ amriṯ kal baṇī.

 

Guru Angad (jaanio) knows (ihai) this (tat-u) reality that (gat-i) emancipation of (sarab) all is in the hands of (alakh) the unseen (biddaanee) wondrous Almighty.

He (sahj bhaaey) intuitively (sanchio) showers (kiran-i) rays of (amrit) life-giving (kal) powerful (baanee) words of wisdom.

 

ਗੁਰ ਗਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣੁ ਤੈ ਪਾਇਓ, ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਗ੍ਰਾਹਜਿ ਲਯੌ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਪਰਸਿਓ ਕਲੁ ਸਮੁਲਵੈ ਜਨ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਲਹਣੇ ਭਯੌ ॥੬॥

Gur gam parmāṇ ṯai pā▫i▫o saṯ sanṯokẖ garāhaj la▫you. Har parsi▫o kal samulavai jan ḏarsan lahṇe bẖa▫you. ||6||

 

(Tai) you (paaio) obtained (pramaan-u) endorsement to (gam-i = reach) status of the guru and (graahaj-i layo) acquired the attributes of (sat-u) truthfulness and (santokh-u = contentment) conformance to Divine commands.

(Jan) the person who (bhayo = has, darsan-u = sight) meets (lahney) guru Angad (parsio) sees (har-i) the Almighty, (samulvai) proclaims (kal-u) Kal Shaar, the bard. 6.

 

ਮਨਿ ਬਿਸਾਸੁ ਪਾਇਓ, ਗਹਰਿ ਗਹੁ ਹਦਰਥਿ ਦੀਓ ॥ ਗਰਲ ਨਾਸੁ ਤਨਿ ਨਠਯੋ, ਅਮਿਉ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਪੀਓ ॥

Man bisās pā▫i▫o gahar gahu haḏrath ḏī▫o.  Garal nās ṯan naṯẖyo ami▫o anṯargaṯ pī▫o.

 

You (paaio) put (bisaas-u/visvaas) faith (man-i) in mind and (hadrath-i/hazrat) the supreme Guru Nanak (deeo) gave /enabled (gahu = hold) to reach (gahar-i) the profound Almighty.

(Garal) poison/vices have (natthio = run away) left your (tan-i) body/mind; you (peeo) drink (amio/amrit) the life-giving elixir (antargat-i) within, i.e. have become aware of Naam present within.

 

ਰਿਦਿ ਬਿਗਾਸੁ ਜਾਗਿਓ, ਅਲਖਿ ਕਲ ਧਰੀ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਹਜ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਰਵਿਓ ਸਾਮਾਨਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ॥

Riḏ bigās jāgi▫o alakẖ kal ḏẖarī juganṯar.  Saṯgur sahj samāḏẖ ravi▫o sāmān niranṯar.

 

(Bigaas) enlightenment has (jaagio = awakened) come to your (rid-i) mind that (alakh-i) the unseen Almighty has (dharee) placed (kal) Power (jugantar-i) in the world, i.e. Divine commands apply everywhere.

(Satigur-u) the true guru remains in (sahaj) steadfast (samaadh-i = deep meditation) focus on the Almighty who (ravio) is present (samaan-i) equally in all (nirantar-i) without interruption.

 

ਉਦਾਰਉ ਚਿਤ, ਦਾਰਿਦ ਹਰਨ, ਪਿਖੰਤਿਹ ਕਲਮਲ ਤ੍ਰਸਨ ॥ ਸਦ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਕਲੁ ਉਚਰੈ ਜਸੁ ਜੰਪਉ ਲਹਣੇ ਰਸਨ ॥੭॥

Uḏāra▫o cẖiṯ ḏāriḏ haran pikẖanṯai kalmal ṯarsan. Saḏ rang sahj kal ucẖrai jas jampa▫o lahṇe rasan. ||7||

 

Guru Angad is (udaarau = broad, chit = mind) benevolent, (haran) destroys/ends (daarid/daaridr = poverty) troubles – by imparting virtues; (kalmal) sins (trasan) are terrified on (pikhantih) seeing him, i.e. vices do not affect one who follows the guru.

(Kal-u) Kal Sahaar (uchrai) says: I (sad) ever (rang-i) lovingly and (sahaj-i) steadfastly (jampau) remember/praise (jas-u = glory) virtues (lahaney) of Guru Angad with my (rasan) tongue. 7.

 

ਨਾਮੁ ਅਵਖਧੁ, ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ, ਅਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਧਿ, ਸੁਖੁ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੌ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉ ਕਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰਹ ਬੋਹੈ ॥

Nām avkẖaḏẖ nām āḏẖār ar nām samāḏẖ sukẖ saḏā nām nīsāṇ sohai.   Rang raṯou nām si▫o kal nām sur narah bohai.

 

Practice of Naam/Divine virtues and commands is (avkhadh-u) the medicine that cures of vices, Naam is (adhaar-u = support) mainstay against temptations; (ar-u) and practice of Naam is being in (samaadh-i) deep meditation; (neesaan-u) the sign of living by Naam, being at (sukh-u) peace is (sadaa) ever (sohai = looks good) is your glory.

You are (ratou) imbued (sio) with (rang-i) love of Naam; (kal) the power of Naam (bohai) imparts fragrance, i.e. brings peace, (sur-i) to gods and (narah) humans.

 

ਨਾਮ ਪਰਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਓ ਸਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਓ ਰਵਿ ਲੋਇ ॥ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਪਰਸਿਐ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥

Nām paras jin pā▫i▫o saṯ pargati▫o rav lo▫e.  Ḏarsan parsi▫ai gurū kai aṯẖsaṯẖ majan ho▫e. ||8||

 

One (jin-i) who (paaio) receives (paras-u) touch/awareness of Naam from guru Angad, she becomes (sat-u) truthful and (pragattio = manifests) gets known everywhere, like (rav-i) the sun shines on (loey) the whole world.

(Parsiai) seeing/following (darsan = sight) example (kai) of the guru purifies one of vices; it is like (hoey) having (majan-u) bath at (attsatth-i) sixty eight places of pilgrimage, – which people do for purification. 8.

 

ਸਚੁ ਤੀਰਥੁ, ਸਚੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ, ਅਰੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਸਚੁ, ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਭਾਖੰਤੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ, ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਬੋਹੈ ॥

Sacẖ ṯirath sacẖ isnān ar bẖojan bẖā▫o sacẖ saḏā sacẖ bẖākẖanṯ sohai.  Sacẖ pā▫i▫o gur sabaḏ sacẖ nām sangṯī bohai.

 

(Sach-u) truthfully living by Naam is (teerath-u) pilgrimage, it is (isnaan-u) the bath; (ar-u) and (bhaau) loving (sach-u) practice of Naam is (bhojan = food) sustenance/support; one who (sadaa) ever (bhaakhant-u) utters/obeys Naam (sohai = looks good) is glorified.

Awareness of (sach-u = truthful) living (paaio) is attained (sabad-i) through words/teachings of (gur) the guru; Naam of (sach-u) the Eternal (bohai) imparts fragrance, i.e. brings peace (sangtee) to the holy congregation.

 

ਜਿਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ, ਵਰਤੁ ਸਚੁ, ਕਬਿ ਜਨ ਕਲ ਵਖਾਣੁ ॥ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਪਰਸਿਐ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਸਚੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੯॥

Jis sacẖ sanjam varaṯ sacẖ kab jan kal vakẖāṇ.  Ḏarsan parsi▫ai gurū kai sacẖ janam parvāṇ. ||9||

 

(Vakhaan-u) says (kab-i) poet/bard (kal) Kal Sahaar: Guru Angad for (jis-u) whom (sach-u) truthful living is (sanjam-u) control of senses and (varat-u) fast-keeping; (parseeai) by seeing/following (darsan-i = sight) example of that guru, one’s (sach-u) truthful conduct in (janam-u) human birth is (parvaan-u = approved) successful in finding the Almighty. 9.

 

ਅਮਿਅ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸੁਭ ਕਰੈ, ਹਰੈ ਅਘ ਪਾਪ ਸਕਲ ਮਲ ॥ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਰੁ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਵਸਿ ਕਰੈ ਸਭੈ ਬਲ ॥

Ami▫a ḏarisat subẖ karai harai agẖ pāp sakal mal.   Kām kroḏẖ ar lobẖ moh vas karai sabẖai bal.

 

One on whom Guru Angad (karai) casts his (subh) good/kind (drisst-i) sight, i.e. his guidance, (harai) removes all his/her (mal) dirt of (agh) sins and (paap) transgressions.

And (karai) makes (sabhai) all (bal) the powerful vices like (kaam) lust, (krodh) anger, (lobh) greed (ar-u) and (moh) worldly attachments (vas-i) under control/subdued.

 

ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ, ਦੁਖੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਹ ਖੋਵੈ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਜਨਮ ਹਮ ਕਾਲਖ ਧੋਵੈ ॥

Saḏā sukẖ man vasai ḏukẖ sansārah kẖovai.   Gur nav niḏẖ ḏarī▫ā▫o janam ham kālakẖ ḏẖovai.

 

(Sukh-u) peace (sadaa) ever (vasai) abides (man-i) in mind of that person, and s/he (khovai = loses) is freed of (dukh-u) the pain of being reborn (sansaarah) in the world.

The guru is (dareeaau = river) source of (nau = nine, nidh-i = treasures) the valuable (naam-u) virtues and commands of the Almighty, with which he (dhovai) washes off (ham) our (kaalakh = soot) the dirt of wrongdoings of numerous past (janam) births.

 

ਸੁ ਕਹੁ ਟਲ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਪਰਸਿਐ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੦॥

So kaho tal gur sevī▫ai ahinis sahj subẖā▫e.   Ḏarsan parsi▫ai gurū kai janam maraṇ ḏukẖ jā▫e. ||10||

 

(Kah-u) say (ttal/kal) Kal Sahaar, we should (sahaj-i) steadfastly and (subhaaey) lovingly (seyveeai = serve) obey (s-u) that (gur-u) Guru Angad (ahnis-i) day and night.

(Parseeai) by seeing/following (darsan-i = sight) example of that guru Angad, (dukh-u) the agony of being in cycles of (janam) births and (maran) deaths (jaaey = goes) ends. 10.
