ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ॥ ਕਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਧ੍ਰੂ ਪਰਿ ॥ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਭਗਤ ਉਧਰੀਅੰ ॥ ਹਸ੍ਤ ਕਮਲ ਮਾਥੇ ਪਰ ਧਰੀਅੰ ॥

Sirī gurū sāhib sabẖ ūpar.   Karī kirpā saṯjug jin ḏẖarū par.  Sarī parahlāḏ bẖagaṯ uḏẖrī▫aʼn.   Hasṯ kamal māthe par ḏẖarī▫aʼn.

 

(Sri) the revered (guru) great (sahib-u) Master is (oopar-i = above) higher than (sabh) all, (jin-i) who (karee) bestowed (kripa = kindness) grace (par-i) on the devotee Dhroo (satjug-i) in Satyug.

Similarly (sri) the revered (bhagat) devotee Prahlaad (udhreea’n) was saved when the Almighty (dhareea’n) placed IT’s (kamal = lotus) pristine (hast) hand on his (maathey = forehead) head, i.e. blessed with protection.  (Note: The lotus flower – as mentioned above – remains untouched by the mud below; and is the epitome of purity).

 

ਅਲਖ ਰੂਪ ਜੀਅ ਲਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਾ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸਿਧ ਸਗਲ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਬਚਨ ਸਤਿ ਜੀਅ ਧਾਰਹੁ ॥ ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਦੇਹ ਨਿਸ੍ਤਾਰਹੁ ॥

Alakẖ rūp jī▫a lakẖ▫yā na jā▫ī.   Sāḏẖik siḏẖ sagal sarṇā▫ī.  Gur ke bacẖan saṯ jī▫a ḏẖārahu.   Māṇas janam ḏeh nisṯārahu.

 

God’s (roop) form is (alakh = without signs) unseen and (na jaaee) cannot (lakhya) be seen/described by (jeea) the creatures. (Sagal) all (saadhik) seekers and (sidh) yogis place themselves (sarnaaee = in sanctuary) care and obedience – without seeing with physical eyes.

O human being, (dhaarh-u) keep (sat-i = true) the inviolable (bachan = words) teachings (key) of (gur) the guru in (jeea) mind; practice of Naam/Divine virtues and commands under the guru’s guidance, and (nistaarh-u) ferry (deyh = body) body, i.e. make success of (maanas) human (janam-u) birth, to get across the world-ocean of vices to God, not to be reborn.

 

ਗੁਰੁ ਜਹਾਜੁ ਖੇਵਟੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਰਿਆ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

Gur jahāj kẖevat gurū gur bin ṯari▫ā na ko▫e.   Gur parsāḏ parabẖ pā▫ī▫ai gur bin mukaṯ na ho▫e.

 

For this, teachings of (gur-u) the great Almighty Guru is (jahaaj-u) ship, (guru) the guru is (kheyvatt) the sailor, i.e. the guru saves one from vices by imparting awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands; (na koey = not any) no one (tariaa = swims) gets across the world-ocean of temptations/vices without guidance of (gur) the guru.

(Prabh-u) the Almighty (paaeeai) is found by shedding vices (prasaad-i) with grace/guidance of the guru; (na koey) no one (hoey) gets (mukat-i) freed of/overcomes temptations (bin-i) without guidance of (gur) the guru.

 

ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬਸੈ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥ ਤਿਨਿ ਲਹਣਾ ਥਾਪਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਲਹਣੈ ਪੰਥੁ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ॥ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਭਲੇ ਕਉ ਦੀਆ ॥

Gur Nānak nikat basai banvārī.   Ŧin lahṇā thāp joṯ jag ḏẖārī.  Lahṇai panth ḏẖaram kā kī▫ā.   Amarḏās bẖale ka▫o ḏī▫ā.

 

(Gur-u) Guru Nanak (basai) abides (nikatt-i) near (banvaari = gardener of vegetation) the Almighty Sustainor – because he overcame temptations. (Tin-i = that) Guru Nanak (thaap-i) installed his disciple Lahna as his successor to (dhaaree = placed) continue spreading (jot-i = light) enlightenment of his teachings as Guru with the name Angad.

(Lahnai) Lahna/Guru Angad (keeaa = made) continued on (panth-u) the path of (dharam) righteousness and (deeaa = gave) passed on (kau) to Guru Amarads (bhaley) of Bhalaa clan.

 

ਤਿਨਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਸੋਢੀ ਥਿਰੁ ਥਪ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਖੈ ਨਿਧਿ ਅਪ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥

Ŧin sarī Rāmḏās sodẖī thir thap▫ya▫o.   Har kā nām akẖai niḏẖ ap▫ya▫o.

 

(Tin-i = that) Guru Amardas (thapyau) established/appointed Guru Ramdas of Sodhi clan as his successor and (apyau/arpio = gave) passed on (nidh-i) the treasure of awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands of (akhai = imperishable) the Eternal (har-i) Almighty.

 

ਅਪ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਖੈ ਨਿਧਿ ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਿ ਫਲੁ ਲਹੀਅੰ ॥ ਬੰਦਹਿ ਜੋ ਚਰਣ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਹੀਅੰ ॥

Ap▫ya▫o har nām akẖai niḏẖ cẖahu jug gur sevā kar fal lahī▫aʼn.  Banḏėh jo cẖaraṇ saraṇ sukẖ pāvahi parmānanḏ gurmukẖ kahī▫aʼn.

 

Guru Amardas (apyau/arpio = gave) passed on (nidh-i) the treasure of awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands of (akhai = imperishable) the Eternal (har-i) Almighty which are (chahu = all four, jug-i = in ages) for all times; Guru Ramdas (laheea’n) received guru-ship as (phal-u = fruit) a result of (kar-i = doing, seyva = service) obeying Naam like (gur) Guru Amardas.

Those (jo) who (kaheea’n) are called/become (gurmukh-i) guru’s followers, they (bandah-i) pay obeisance and place themselves (saran-i = in sanctuary of, charan = feet) care and obedience of the true guru; they (paavah-i) experience (sukh-u) peace – by experiencing presence of the Almighty epitome of (parmanand) supreme bliss, within.

 

ਪਰਤਖਿ ਦੇਹ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਦਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਪੋਖਣ ਭਰਣੰ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਅਲਖ ਗਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਤਾਰਣ ਤਰਣੰ ॥੧॥

Parṯakẖ ḏeh pārbarahm su▫āmī āḏ rūp pokẖaṇ bẖarṇaʼn.  Saṯgur gur sev alakẖ gaṯ jā kī sarī Rāmḏās ṯāraṇ ṯarṇaʼn. ||1||

 

The guru is (partakh = direct experience) the visible (roop-i = form of) manifestation of (deyh = body) form of (aad-i) the Primal (paarbrahm) Supreme Spirit of (suaami) the Master; who (pokhan bhar’n = nurturer) sustains all.

(Sree) revered Guru Ramdas, (ja = who, ki = of) whose (alakh) indescribable exalted (gat-i) state was obtained (seyv-i) by serving/obeying (gur-u) the great (satigu-u) true Guru, his teachings are (tarn’n) the ship (taar’n = ferry) to take across the world-ocean – to find God and not be reborn. 1.

 

ਜਿਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਚਨ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਜਪਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਿਚਿਤਿ ਚਾਓ ॥ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਨਿਤ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

ih amriṯ bacẖan baṇī sāḏẖū jan jāpėh kar bicẖiṯ cẖā▫o.   Ānanḏ niṯ mangal gur ḏarsan safal sansār.

 

Guru Ramdas (jih) whose (bachan, baani) words/teachings (saadhoo) saintly (jan) people (japah-i) remember and obey (kar-i) with (bachit-i) focused mind and (chaau) fondness.

Following (darsan-u = sight) example of that true guru (nit) ever brings (aanand-u) pleasure, (mangal-u) joy and makes (sansaar-i = world) birth (saphal-i) fruitful – in overcoming temptations and finding the Almighty.

 

ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਸਫਲੁ ਗੰਗਾ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਰਸਨ ਪਰਮ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਗਤੇ ॥ ਜੀਤਹਿ ਜਮ ਲੋਕੁ ਪਤਿਤ ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸਿਵ ਗੁਰ ਗ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨਿ ਰਤੇ ॥

Sansār safal gangā gur ḏarsan parsan param paviṯar gaṯe.   Jīṯėh jam lok paṯiṯ je parāṇī har jan siv gur ga▫yān raṯe.

 

(Parsan) seeing and following (darsan-u = sight) the example of (gur) the guru attains (gatey) state of (pavitr) purity, for which some people go bathe in river Ganga.

Those (praanee) persons (jey) who (patit) have fallen to vices, they (jeetah-i) conquer – are able to avoid being – (lok-u = town, jam = divine justice) confronted by agent of Divine justice; they become (ratey) imbued (jan = servants) with devotion of (har-i) the Almighty (gyaan-i) with awareness of Naam/virtues and commands of (siv) the Almighty.

 

ਰਘੁਬੰਸਿ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਦਸਰਥ ਘਰਿ ਮੁਨਿ ਬੰਛਹਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੰ ॥

Ragẖubans ṯilak sunḏar ḏasrath gẖar mun bancẖẖėh jā kī sarṇaʼn.

 

In Treyta Yug people it was (tilak-u = sign) the celebrated (sundar-u) handsome (ghar-i = in house/family) son of Dasrath (raghubans-i) of Raghu lineage, (ja ki) whose (sarn’n) refuge (mun-i jan) saintly people (banchhah-i) sought.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਅਲਖ ਗਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਤਾਰਣ ਤਰਣੰ ॥੨॥

Saṯgur gur sev alakẖ gaṯ jā kī sarī Rāmḏās ṯāraṇ ṯarṇaʼn. ||2||

 

Similarly now (sree) revered Guru Ramdas is (tarn’n) the ship (taar’n = ferry) to take across the world-ocean of, i.e. to overcome, temptations, find God and not be reborn; (ja = who, ki = of) whose (alakh) indescribable exalted (gat-i) state was obtained (seyv-i) by serving/obeying (gur-u) the great (satigu-u) true Guru, and we should do accordingly. 2.

 

ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਅਗਮ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਯਾ ॥ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੁ ਭਗਾ ਇਹ ਆਈ ਹੀਐ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ॥

Sansār agam sāgar ṯulhā har nām gurū mukẖ pā▫yā.  Ŧaj mā▫i▫ā moh lobẖ ar lālacẖ kām kroḏẖ kī baritha ga▫ī.

 

(Sansaar) the world is (agam = beyond reach) is a hard-to-cross (saagar-u) ocean of temptations; practice of Naam/virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty, is (tulhaa = raft) the boat which takes one across/overcomes temptations; its awareness is (paayaa) obtained (mukh-i) from mouth/teachings of the guru.

When (eih) this (parteet-i) awareness (aaee) comes to (heeai) the mind – one overcomes temptations and – further (janam) births and (maran) deaths (jag-i) in the world (bhagaa = run) are obviated.

 

ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਹੀਐ ਆਈ ਜਿਨ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਪਦਵੀ ਉਚ ਭਈ ॥ ਤਜਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅਰੁ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਗਈ ॥

Parṯīṯ hī▫ai ā▫ī jin jan kai ṯinĥ ka▫o paḏvī ucẖ bẖa▫ī.  Ŧaj mā▫i▫ā moh lobẖ ar lālacẖ kām kroḏẖ kī baritha ga▫ī.

 

Those (jan) persons to (jin) whose (heeai) mind (parteet-i) awareness of Naam (aaee) comes, (uch) exalted (padvee) status/state (bhaee) is attained (tin = them, kau = to) by them, i.e. they overcome temptations – and find God.

They (taj-i) give up (moh-u) obsession with (maaiaa) the world-play, (lobh-u) greed, (lobh-u) greed, (laalach-u) possessiveness, (kaam) lust (ar-u) and (krodh) anger their (britha) pain-causing state/habits/pursuits (gaee = go) end.

 

ਅਵਲੋਕ੍ਯ੍ਯਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਛੁਟਕ੍ਯ੍ਯਾ ਦਿਬ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਟਿ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਣੰ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਅਲਖ ਗਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਤਾਰਣ ਤਰਣੰ ॥੩॥

Avlok▫yā barahm bẖaram sabẖ cẖẖut▫yā ḏib▫y ḏarisat kāraṇ karṇaʼn.  Saṯgur gur sev alakẖ gaṯ jā kī sarī Rāmḏās ṯāraṇ ṯarṇaʼn. ||3||

 

With (dibya = heavenly) God-given inner (dristt-i) vision, they (avlokya) see (brahm-u) the Spirit (kaaran) the cause of all (karn’n = action) that happens and (sabh) all their (bharam-u) wandering/delusion (chuttkya = given up) ends – they find the Almighty.

(Sree) revered Guru Ramdas is (tarn’n) the ship (taar’n = ferry) to take across the world-ocean of, i.e. to overcome, temptations, find God and not be reborn; (ja = who, ki = of) whose (alakh) indescribable exalted (gat-i) state was obtained (seyv-i) by serving/obeying (gur-u) the great (satigu-u) true Guru and we should do accordingly. 3.

 

ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਭਯਾ ਜਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੈ ॥ ਇਕਿ ਪੜਹਿ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਪਰਭਾਤਿਹਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਇਸ੍ਨਾਨੁ ॥

Parṯāp saḏā gur kā gẖat gẖat pargās bẖa▫yā jas jan kai.  Ik paṛėh suṇėh gāvahi parbẖāṯihi karahi isnān.

 

(Partaap = grandeur) grace/guidance (ka) of the guru (sadaa) ever abides (ghatt-i ghatt-i) on all minds; the (jan) seekers (bhaiaa) obtain (pargaas-u = light) enlightenment of (jas-u) glory of the Almighty.

(Ik-i = one type) some (parrah-i) read, (sunah-i) listen to the guru’s teachings and (gaavah-i = sing) praise the Almighty through the guru’s teachings; and (karah-i = do) take (isnaan-u) bath, i.e. purify themselves , (parbhaatah-i) in the morning.

 

ਇਸ੍ਨਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਭਾਤਿ ਸੁਧ ਮਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਜਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਹਿਤ ਕਰੰ ॥ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਸ ਕਉ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੁ ਧਰੰ ॥

Isnān karahi parbẖāṯ suḏẖ man gur pūjā biḏẖ sahiṯ karaʼn.  Kancẖan ṯan ho▫e paras pāras ka▫o joṯ sarūpī ḏẖeān ḏẖaraʼn.

 

They (karah-i = do) take (isnaan-u) bath, i.e. purify themselves (parbhaat-i) in the morning; with (sudh) pure (man-i) mind, i.e. after dispelling other ideas; they (kar’n) perform (pooja) worship of (gur0 the guru (sahit) with (bidh-i) proper way, i.e. lead life by Naam day and night.

They (dhar’n = keep) fix (dhyaan-u) attention on Naam, (saroopee) embodiment of (jot-i = Divine light) of the Almighty, i.e.; their (tan-u) body (hoey) becomes (kanchan-u) gold (paras-i) by touching (kau) with (paaras) Paaras – which is believed to turn a base metal to gold with its touch, i.e. become virtuous by following the guru’s teachings.

 

ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਜਗੰਨਾਥੁ ਜਲ ਥਲ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਪੂਰਿ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਬਰਨੰ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਅਲਖ ਗਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਤਾਰਣ ਤਰਣੰ ॥੪॥

Jagjīvan jagannāth jal thal mėh rahi▫ā pūr baho biḏẖ baranaʼn.  Saṯgur gur sev alakẖ gaṯ jā kī sarī Rāmḏās ṯāraṇ ṯarṇaʼn. ||4||

 

(Jagjeevan-u = life of the world) the Creator and (jag’n-naath-u) Master of the world (rahiaa) is (poor-i) pervading (mah-i) in (jal) in water and (thal) land; people (barn’n) describe the Almighty in (bah-u) numerous (bidh-i) ways

(Sree) revered Guru Ramdas is (tarn’n) the ship (taar’n = ferry) to take across the world-ocean of, i.e. we should follow him to overcome, temptations, find God and not be reborn; (ja = who, ki = of) whose/his (alakh) indescribable exalted (gat-i) state was obtained (seyv-i) by serving/obeying (gur-u) the great (satigu-u) true Guru Amardas. 4.

 

ਜਿਨਹੁ ਬਾਤ ਨਿਸ੍ਚਲ ਧ੍ਰੂਅ ਜਾਨੀ ਤੇਈ ਜੀਵ ਕਾਲ ਤੇ ਬਚਾ ॥ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਤਰਿਓ ਸਮੁਦ੍ਰੁ ਰੁਦ੍ਰੁ ਖਿਨ ਇਕ ਮਹਿ ਜਲਹਰ ਬਿੰਬ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜਗੁ ਰਚਾ ॥

Jinahu bāṯ niscẖal ḏẖarū▫a jānī ṯe▫ī jīv kāl ṯe bacẖā.  Ŧinĥ ṯari▫o samuḏar ruḏar kẖin ik mėh jalhar bimb jugaṯ jag racẖā.

 

Those (jinh-u) who (jaanee = know) obey (baat = word) will of the Almighty (nischal) steadfastly, as the devotee Dhru did, (teyee) those (jeev) persons (bachaa) are safe (tey) from (kaal = death) vices.

(Tinh) they (tario = swim) get across (samudr-u) the ocean/overcome (rudr = killer) vices (mah-i) in (ik) a (khin) moment, i.e. all the time; they escape (rachaa) being created (jugat-i = method) like (bimb) drop of (jalhar) rain and perish, i.e. are saved from cycles of births and deaths.

 

ਕੁੰਡਲਨੀ ਸੁਰਝੀ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਚਾ ॥ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕ੍ਰੰਮ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸਚਾ ॥੫॥

Kundlanī surjẖī saṯsangaṯ parmānanḏ gurū mukẖ macẖā.  Sirī gurū sāhib sabẖ ūpar man bacẖ krėm sevī▫ai sacẖā. ||5||

 

The Yogis perform Yogic procedures to straighten (kunddlanee) coiled serpent, but the mind (surjhee) is disentangled from the world-play (satsangat-i) by joining the holy congregation to listen to (mukh-i = from mouth) teachings of the guru; the Almighty epitome of (parmaanan’nd) supreme bliss (machaa) manifests this way, i.e. is recognized within.

(Sri) the revered (guru) great (sahib-u) Master is (oopar-i = above) higher than (sabh) all; we should (seyveeai = serve) obey (sachaa) the Eternal in (man = mind) thought, (bach/bachan) speech and (kra’mm) deed. 5.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਕਵਲ ਨੈਨ ਮਧੁਰ ਬੈਨ ਕੋਟਿ ਸੈਨ ਸੰਗ ਸੋਭ ਕਹਤ ਮਾ ਜਸੋਦ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਦਹੀ ਭਾਤੁ ਖਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

vāhigurū vāhigurū vāhigurū vāhi jī▫o.  Kaval nain maḏẖur bain kot sain sang sobẖ kahaṯ mā jasoḏ jisahi ḏahī bẖāṯ kẖāhi jī▫o.

 

People worshipped different incarnations in Sat Yug, TrytaYug, Duaapar, but (Vahiguru, Vahiguru, Vahiguru, Vah-i) the praise-worthy Almighty is the Master of all four ages.

In Duaapar Yug, the person of Krishna (sobh) was praised for (sang = with) having (nain) eyes like (kaval) the lotus, (madhur) sweet (bain) words, (sain) army of (kott-i) crores; (jisah-i) whom his (ma) mother (jasodh) Yashoda lovingly (kahat) asked to (khaah-i) eat the meal of (dahee) curd/yogurt and (bhaat-u) rice.

 

ਦੇਖਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਤਿ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਮੋਹ ਮਹਾ ਮਗ ਭਈ ਕਿੰਕਨੀ ਸਬਦ ਝਨਤਕਾਰ ਖੇਲੁ ਪਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Ḏekẖ rūp aṯ anūp moh mahā mag bẖa▫ī kinknī sabaḏ jẖanaṯkār kẖel pāhi jī▫o.

 

People (bhaee) were (moh) fascinated (deykh-i) seeing his (at-i) highly (anoop-u = unique) attractive (roop-u) looks, and hearing (jhanatkaar) tinkling (sabad) sound of (kinkani) bells on his belt when he (kheyl-u paah-i) played, i.e. in earlier ages people worshipped personalities, but –

 

ਕਾਲ ਕਲਮ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹਾਥਿ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਕੈ ਈਸੁ ਬੰਮ੍ਯ੍ਯੁ ਗ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੁ ਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੁ ਧਰਤ ਹੀਐ ਚਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Kāl kalam hukam hāth kahhu ka▫un met sakai īs bamm▫yu ga▫yān ḏẖeān ḏẖaraṯ hī▫ai cẖāhi jī▫o.

 

O Almighty, You have (kalam) the pen (haath-i) in hand in all (kaal = time) ages i.e. you are the Master of all ages. (Kahah-u) tell me (kaun-u) who (sakai) can (meytt-i = erase) countermand Divine (hukam-u) commands; gods like (ees-u) Shiva, (ba’mm-u) Brahma (chaah-i) wish to (dharat) keep (gyaan-u) awareness of Your commands (heeai) in mind and (dhyaan-u) reflect/obey Divine commands.

 

ਸਤਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸਦਾ ਤੁਹੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥੬॥

O Almighty, (tuhee) You are (aad-i) the Primeval (sadaa) forever (sat-i saach-u) Eternal (purkh-u) all-pervasive, (nivaas-u = abode) the Master of (sree) wealth, o (Vahiguru, Vahiguru, Vahiguru, Vah-i) praise-worthy Almighty, You are is the Master of all four ages. 1. 6.

 

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਪਰਮ ਧਾਮ ਸੁਧ ਬੁਧ ਨਿਰੀਕਾਰ ਬੇਸੁਮਾਰ ਸਰਬਰ ਕਉ ਕਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Rām nām param ḏẖām suḏẖ buḏẖ nirīkār besumār sarbar ka▫o kāhi jī▫o.

 

Practice of Naam of (raam) the Almighty, is (param) the sublime (dhaam) place of pilgrimage; the Almighty who has (sudh) awareness and (budh-i) knowledge of all creation is (nireekaar) Formless, (beysumaar) beyond measure (sarbar/sarvar) Sovereign head; (kau) to (kaah-i = who?) no one/incarnation can be described this way.

 

ਸੁਥਰ ਚਿਤ ਭਗਤ ਹਿਤ ਭੇਖੁ ਧਰਿਓ ਹਰਨਾਖਸੁ ਹਰਿਓ ਨਖ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Suthar cẖiṯ bẖagaṯ hiṯ bẖekẖ ḏẖari▫o harnākẖas hari▫o nakẖ biḏār jī▫o.

 

In Satyug (bhagat) the devotee Prahlad had (suthar) clean (chit) mind, i.e. had complete faith in the Almighty; for his (hit) sake the Almighty (dhario) took (bheykh-u) form of Narsigh/Narsimha, i.e. man-lion, and (hario) killed Harnaakhas-u/Harnakashyap (bidaar-i) tearing him with (nakh) nails of the hands.

 

ਸੰਖ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਗਦਾ ਪਦਮ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੁ ਕੀਓ ਛਦਮ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਲਖੈ ਕਉਨੁ ਤਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Sankẖ cẖakar gaḏā paḏam āp āp kī▫o cẖẖaḏam aprampar pārbarahm lakẖai ka▫un ṯāhi jī▫o.

 

Vishnu (keeo) took the form of a dwarf holding (sankh) a conch, (chakr) a disc-like weapon, (gadaa) mace, and (padam) lotus flower and (keeo chhadam) deceived, the king Bal – who could not recognize Vishnu; similarly (kaun-u = who?) no one can (lakhai) recognize (taah-i) You.

ਪੀਤ ਬਸਨ ਕੁੰਦ ਦਸਨ ਪ੍ਰਿਆ ਸਹਿਤ ਕੰਠ ਮਾਲ ਮੁਕਟੁ ਸੀਸਿ ਮੋਰ ਪੰਖ ਚਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Pīṯ basan kunḏ ḏasan pari▫a sahiṯ kanṯẖ māl mukat sīs mor pankẖ cẖāhi jī▫o.

 

The person of Krishna with his (peet) yellow (basan) attire, (dasan) teeth (kund) white like jasmine flower petals, (maal/maalaa) rosary on (kantth) the neck, (mukatt) a crown with (mor) peacock (pankh) feather (sees-i) on the head, and ever (chaah-i) full of enthusiasm/playful was worshipped in Duaapar Yug, (sahit) along-with his (pria) beloved – Raadha.

ਬੇਵਜੀਰ ਬਡੇ ਧੀਰ ਧਰਮ ਅੰਗ ਅਲਖ ਅਗਮ ਖੇਲੁ ਕੀਆ ਆਪਣੈ ਉਛਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Bevjīr bade ḏẖīr ḏẖaram ang alakẖ agam kẖel kī▫ā āpṇai ucẖẖāhi jī▫o.

 

O Almighty, but You (beyvajeer = without minister) need no advisor, are (baddey/vaddey) very (dheer/dheeraj) patient/unshakable; You take (ang) the side of (dharam) righteous-ness, o (alakh = without signs) Formless/unseen, (agam) beyond reach/comprehension Master; You (keeaa) have created (kheyl-u = play) the world-play according to Your (aapnai) own (uchhaah-i/utsaah = zeal) will/plan.

 

ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਕਥੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਤੀਨਿ ਲੋਕ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ਸੁਤਹ ਸਿਧ ਰੂਪੁ ਧਰਿਓ ਸਾਹਨ ਕੈ ਸਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Akath kathā kathī na jā▫e ṯīn lok rahi▫ā samā▫e suṯah siḏẖ rūp ḏẖari▫o sāhan kai sāhi jī▫o.

 

O Almighty, Your (kathaa = story) Being is (akath) beyond description, it (na jaaey) cannot be (kathee) described; You (rahiaa = remain) are (samaaey = contained) present (teen-i) in the three (lok) regions – space, water and land, i.e. the whole creation, (sutah sidh = in sleep/effortlessly) all the time; and (dhario) manifest in (roop-u) the form of nature, o (saah-i) King (kai) of (saahan) kings.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਬਿੰਦ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਬਲਿਹਿ ਛਲਨ ਸਬਲ ਮਲਨ ਭਗ੍ਤਿ ਫਲਨ ਕਾਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕੁਅਰ ਨਿਹਕਲੰਕ ਬਜੀ ਡੰਕ ਚੜ੍ਹੂ ਦਲ ਰਵਿੰਦ ਜੀਉ ॥

Saṯgurū saṯgurū saṯgur gubinḏ jī▫o.  Balihi cẖẖalan sabal malan bẖagaṯ falan kānĥ ku▫ar nihklank bajī dank cẖaṛhū ḏal ravinḏ jī▫o.

 

We should obey (gubind = master of the world) the Almighty (satiguru satiguru satigur) true guru in thought, word and deed, who has been, is and shall ever be present.

In Satyug Vishnu took the metaphoric form of a dwarf and (chhalan) deceived (balah-i) of the king Bal. In Duaapar Yug, he took the metaphoric form of (kuar) prince, (kaanh) Krishna and (malan) destroyed (sabal) the  powerful – king Kansa, (phalan = fruitful) fulfilling wishes (bhagat-i) of the devotees, (nihklank) unblemished; whose (ravind = lotus) pure/righteous (dal) forces (charrhoo) attacked with (bajee) beat of (ddank) drum.

 

ਰਾਮ ਰਵਣ ਦੁਰਤ ਦਵਣ ਸਕਲ ਭਵਣ ਕੁਸਲ ਕਰਣ ਸਰਬ ਭੂਤ ਆਪਿ ਹੀ ਦੇਵਾਧਿ ਦੇਵ ਸਹਸ ਮੁਖ ਫਨਿੰਦ ਜੀਉ ॥

Rām ravaṇ ḏuraṯ ḏavaṇ sakal bẖavaṇ kusal karaṇ sarab bẖūṯ āp hī ḏevāḏẖ ḏev sahas mukẖ faninḏ jī▫o.

 

(Raam) the Almighty is (ravan) all-pervasive, (davan) destroys (durat) evil, is present in (sakal/sagal) all (bhavan) places, (karan = makes) provides (kusal) happiness to (sarab) all; the Almighty is (aap-i hi) IT-self (bhoot) physical existence, i.e. creation is manifestation of the Almighty, (deyv) God above (deyvaadh-i) gods as well as (sahas) thousand (mukh = face) headed (phanind) serpent – called Sheyshnaag.

 

ਜਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਮਛ ਕਛ ਹੁਅ ਬਰਾਹ ਜਮੁਨਾ ਕੈ ਕੂਲਿ ਖੇਲੁ ਖੇਲਿਓ ਜਿਨਿ ਗਿੰਦ ਜੀਉ ॥

Jaram karam macẖẖ kacẖẖ hu▫a barāh jamunā kai kūl kẖel kẖeli▫o jin binn jī▫o.

 

People worship incarnations of Vishnu (jaram/janam) born (hua) as (machh) fish, (kachh) tortoise, (braah) boar; and Krishna who (kheylio) played (kheyl-u) the game of (gind) ball (kool-i) in vicinity (kai) of the river Jamuna/Yamuna.

 

ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਹੀਏ ਧਾਰੁ ਤਜੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ਮਨ ਗਯੰਦ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਗੁਬਿੰਦ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੯॥

Nām sār hī▫e ḏẖār ṯaj bikār man ga▫yanḏ saṯgurū saṯgurū saṯgur gubinḏ jī▫o. ||4||9||

 

Says the bard Gayand; we should (dhaar-u) keep (hee-ey) in mind (saar-u) the sublime Naam/Divine virtues and commands; we should (taj-i) dispel (bikaar-u) evil from (man) the mind, and obey (gubind = master of the world) the Almighty (satiguru satiguru satigur) true guru in thought, word and deed, who has been, is and shall ever be present. 4. 9.

 

ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕਹਿਆ ਮਾਨੁ ਨਿਜ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਨੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਇਹੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਹੋਇ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੁ ਲਹਹਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Sirī gurū sirī gurū sirī gurū saṯ jī▫o.  Gur kahi▫ā mān nij niḏẖān sacẖ jān manṯar ihai nis bāsur ho▫e kal▫yān lahėh param gaṯ jī▫o.

 

Teachings of (siree guru) the revered guru – thrice – have been, are and shall always be (sat-i = true) applicable – are for all times. (Maan-u) obey (kahiaa = saying) instruction of (gur) the guru, keep this (nidhaan-u = treasure) wealth (nij = self) with you. (Jaan-u = know) be aware that (ihai) this (mantr) formula/guidance is (sach-u = true) unfailing; one who follows it (nis-i) night and (baasur) day (lahah-i) attains (param) the supreme (gat-i) state – of freedom from temptations, finds the Almighty within and (hoey) remains (kalyaan-u) happy.

 

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਣ ਜਣ ਸਿਉ ਛਾਡੁ ਧੋਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਾ ਫੰਧੁ ਕਾਟੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਰਤਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Kām kroḏẖ lobẖ moh jaṇ jaṇ si▫o cẖẖād ḏẖohu ha▫umai kā fanḏẖ kāt sāḏẖsang raṯ jī▫o.

 

(Chhaadd-u) give up (kaam-u) lust, (krodh-u) anger (moh-u) obsession with the world-play and (dhoh-u) deception (siau) with (jan jan = person after person) people; (kaatt-i) cut (phandh-u) noose/vice (ka) of (haumai = ego) acting by self-will; join (saddhsang-i) holy congregation and (rat-i) be imbued with love/obedience of the Almighty.

 

ਦੇਹ ਗੇਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਸਨੇਹੁ ਚਿਤ ਬਿਲਾਸੁ ਜਗਤ ਏਹੁ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਦਾ ਸੇਉ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਤਾ ਕਰੁ ਮਤਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Ḏeh gehu ṯari▫a sanehu cẖiṯ bilās jagaṯ ehu cẖaran kamal saḏā se▫o ḏariṛ▫ṯā kar maṯ jī▫o.

 

Also give up (saneyhu) affection/obsession with (deyh) body – physical strength and beauty –, (geyhu/grih) house/property; (eyh-u) these only provide (bilaas) happiness of (chit) the mind in (jagat) the world, i.e. when alive; (sada) ever (seyau) serve at (kamal) lotus (charan) feet, i.e. obey the Almighty (kar-u) with (drirrtaa) firm (mat-i) faith – for comfort here and in the hereafter.

 

ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਹੀਏ ਧਾਰੁ ਤਜੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ਮਨ ਗਯੰਦ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥੧੦॥

Nām sār hī▫e ḏẖār ṯaj bikār man ga▫yanḏ sirī gurū sirī gurū sirī gurū saṯ jī▫o. ||5||10||

ਸੇਵਕ ਕੈ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਵਾਹਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਸਦਕਾ ॥ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਕਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਊ ਤੂ ਕਦ ਕਾ ॥

Sevak kai bẖarpūr jug jug vāhgurū ṯerā sabẖ saḏkā.  Nirankār parabẖ saḏā salāmaṯ kahi na sakai ko▫ū ṯū kaḏ kā.

 

O Almighty (vaahguru) praise-worthy guru, it is (sabh) all because of (teyra) Your (sadka) blessing that store-houses of (seyvak) the devotees have (jug jug = age after age) ever been (bharpoor-i) full, i.e. are happy living by Your will.

O Almighty (nirankaar-u) Formless/unseen (prabh-u) Master, You have (sadaa) ever been (salaamat-i = alive) present; (n ko-oo) no one (sakai) can (kah-i) say, (kad = when, ka = of) since when (too) You have existed – because You first created Yourself and then the creatures. (Note: The fifth Guru says “Pita ka janam k-i jaanai poot-u” – how can the child know of birth of the father. SGGS p 284).

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਸਿਰੇ ਤੈ ਅਗਨਤ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਮੋਹੁ ਭਯਾ ਮਨ ਮਦ ਕਾ ॥

Barahmā bisan sire ṯai agnaṯ ṯin ka▫o moh bẖa▫yā man maḏ kā.

 

(Tai) You (sirey) created (aganat) countless Brahma and (bisan-u) Vishnu; but (tin kau = to them) they (bhayaa = happened) developed (moh-u) obsession with (mad = intoxication) pride of (man) the mind, i.e. Brahma believes he created the world and Vishnu thinks he sustains it; and they are worshipped.

 

ਚਵਰਾਸੀਹ ਲਖ ਜੋਨਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਦੀਆ ਸਭ ਹੂ ਕਉ ਤਦ ਕਾ ॥

Cẖavrāsīh lakẖ jon upā▫ī rijak ḏī▫ā sabẖ hū ka▫o ṯaḏ kā.

 

But it is You who (upaaee) created (chauraaseeh) eight four lakh (jon-i) life-forms of the creatures and (deeaa = gave) provided (rijak-u) wherewithal (kau) to (sabh) all (tad ka = since then) since their creation.

 

ਸੇਵਕ ਕੈ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਵਾਹਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਸਦਕਾ ॥੧॥੧੧॥

Sevak kai bẖarpūr jug jug vāhgurū ṯerā sabẖ saḏkā. ||1||11||

 

O Almighty (vaahguru) praise-worthy guru, it is (sabh) all because of (teyra) Your (sadka) blessing that store-houses of (seyvak) the devotees have (jug jug = age after age) ever been (bharpoor-i) full, i.e. are happy living by Your will. 1. 11.

 

ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਕਾ ਬਡਾ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥ ਆਪੇ ਹਸੈ ਆਪਿ ਹੀ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥

vāhu vāhu kā badā ṯamāsā.  Āpe hasai āp hī cẖiṯvai āpe cẖanḏ sūr pargāsā.

 

Creation is (vaddaa) a great (tamaashaa) play of (vaah-u vaah-u) the praise-worthy Almighty, who (aapai) IT-self (chitvai) reflects what is required, provides that as well as (pargaasaa) light of (chand-u) the moon and (soor-u) the sun, i.e. imparts awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands; (aapai = self) the Almighty (hasai = laughs) is pleased to see it.

 

ਆਪੇ ਜਲੁ ਆਪੇ ਥਲੁ ਥੰਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਨੁ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਆ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਬਾਸਾ ॥ ਆਪੇ ਨਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਫੁਨਿ ਨਾਰੀ ਆਪੇ ਸਾਰਿ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪਾਸਾ ॥

Āpe jal āpe thal thamĥan āpe kī▫ā gẖat gẖat bāsā.   Āpe nar āpe fun nārī āpe sār āp hī pāsā.

 

The Creator (aapey) IT-self is (jal-u) water and IT-self (tha’mmhan-u = dam) land to hold the water in place; has (baasaa) abode, i.e. is present (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in every form of existence and directs from within.

Is IT-self (nar-u) man and IT-self (phun-i) also (naaree) the woman; is (aap hi) IT-self (paasaa) the dice – by throw of which (saar-i) the pieces on the board in the game of Chauparr move – and is IT-self the pieces.

Message: The Almighty causes the creatures to act and IT-self acts – being present in them.

 

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਭੈ ਬਿਚਾਰਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਕਾ ਬਡਾ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥੨॥੧੨॥

Gurmukẖ sangaṯ sabẖai bicẖārahu vāhu vāhu kā badā ṯamāsā. ||2||12||

 

O (sangat-i) congregation/seekers, we should (sabhai) all (gurmukh-i) follow the guru’ teachings, (bichaarhu) reflect on this (vaddaa) great (tamaashaa) play of (vaah-u vaah-u) the praise-worthy Almighty, i.e. follow the guru to understand that everything happens by Divine commands, and happily submit to Divine will. 2. 12.

 

ਕੀਆ ਖੇਲੁ ਬਡ ਮੇਲੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਰਚਨਾ ॥ ਤੂ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਗਗਨਿ ਪਯਾਲਿ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹ੍ਯ੍ਯਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤੇ ਮੀਠੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਬਚਨਾ ॥

Kī▫ā kẖel bad mel ṯamāsā vāhigurū ṯerī sabẖ racẖnā.  Ŧū jal thal gagan pa▫yāl pūr rah▫yā amriṯ ṯe mīṯẖe jā ke bacẖnā.

 

O (Vahiguru) praise-worthy Almighty, You (keeaa = made) created (badd) a great (meyl-u = join) composite (tamaasaa) play, i.e. all creation is one composite unit functioning by cosmic laws; (sabh) everything is (teyri) Your (rachna) creation.

(Too) You (rahyaa = remain, poor-i = filling) are present (jal-i) in water, (thal-i) on/in land, (gagan-i) in sky and (pyaal-i) in nether regions – in the form of cosmic laws; (teyrey) Your (bachnaa = words) commands are (meethey) sweeter (tey) than (a’mmrit) the sweetest elixir, i.e. all creation happily obeys Divine commands, i.e. functions according to cosmic laws.

 

ਮਾਨਹਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿਕ ਰੁਦ੍ਰਾਦਿਕ ਕਾਲ ਕਾ ਕਾਲੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਜਚਨਾ ॥

Mānėh barahmāḏik ruḏrāḏik kāl kā kāl niranjan jacẖnā.

 

Gods (brahamadik) like Brahma and (rudraadik) like Rudr/Shiva whom people worship, they (maanah-i) obey You; You are (kaal-u) death of (kaal) death, i.e. Your obedience saves from falling prey to temptations; You are Yourself (niranjan – stain free) untouched by temptations and the seekers (jachna) seek Your protection.

Gur parsāḏ pā▫ī▫ai parmārath saṯsangaṯ seṯī man kẖacẖnā.  Kī▫ā kẖel bad mel ṯamāsā vāhgurū ṯerī sabẖ racẖnā. ||3||13||42||

 

(Parmaarath-u) the supreme objective of freedom from temptations and finding God, (paaeeai) is attained (prasaad-i) with grace/guidance of (gur) the guru, with (man-u) the mind (khachna) being absorbed in the guru’s teachings as taught in (satsangat-i) in the holy congregation.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ, ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਮਨਿ ਜਪੈ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੁ, ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਜਨ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਹੁ ਕਤ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਤਾਰਣ ਤਰਣ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਟਿ ਧਾਰੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਿਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਖੋਵੈ ਜੀਉ ॥

Saṯgur nām ek liv man japai ḏariṛĥu ṯinĥ jan ḏukẖ pāp kaho kaṯ hovai jī▫o.   Ŧāraṇ ṯaraṇ kẖin maṯar jā ka▫o ḏarisat ḏẖārai sabaḏ riḏ bīcẖārai kām kroḏẖ kẖovai jī▫o.

 

One who (japai) remembers and obeys Naam/Divine virtues and commands with (drirrh-u) firm  commitment, and (eyk) single (man-i) minded (liv) attention guided by (satigur) the true guru, (paap-u) sin, and resultant (dukh) grief (kat = how?) cannot (hovai = happen) afflict (tinh) that (jan) person.

Guru’s teachings are (taran) the ship (taaran) to ferry across the world-ocean; one (kau) on (ja) whom the Almighty (dhaarai = places, dristt-i = sight of grace) bestows grace (khin maatr) a bit. That person – finds the guru and – (beechaarai) reflects on (sabad-u = word) the guru’s teachings, s/he (khovai = loses) gets rid of vices like (kaam-u) lust and (krodh-u) anger,– which are impediments to union with the Almighty o (jeeo) dear.

 

ਜੀਅਨ ਸਭਨ ਦਾਤਾ, ਅਗਮ ਗ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨ ਬਿਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਤਾ, ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨ ਧਾਵੈ, ਪਲਕ ਨ ਸੋਵੈ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦੇਖਤ ਦਰਿਦ੍ਰੁ ਜਾਵੈ, ਨਾਮੁ ਸੋ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਧੋਵੈ ਜੀਉ ॥

Jī▫an sabẖan ḏāṯā agam ga▫yān bikẖ▫yāṯā ahinis ḏẖeān ḏẖāvai palak na sovai jī▫o.  Jā ka▫o ḏekẖaṯ ḏariḏar jāvai nām so niḏẖān pāvai gurmukẖ ga▫yān ḏurmaṯ mail ḏẖovai jī▫o.

 

The true guru is (daataa = giver) kind to guide (sabhan) all (jeean) creatures; he (bikhyaata = makes famous) propagates (gyaan) awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands – as guide for life; (dhaavai) focuses (dhyaan) attention on Naam (ahinis-i) day and night, does not (sovai = sleep) ignore Naam even for (palak) blink of the eye.

(Deykhat) seeing (ja kau = whom) the guru’s example, one’s (daridr-u = poverty) misery resulting from being ignorant of Naam (jaavai) ends, as (so) that person (paavai) obtains (nidhaan-u) the treasure of awareness of Naam; (gyaan) awareness imparted (gurmukh-i) by the guru’s teachings (dhovai) washes off (mail-u) the dirt of (durmat-i) evil counsel/ideas from the mind.

Ḏẖaram karam pūrai saṯgur pā▫ī hai.  Jā kī sevā siḏẖ sāḏẖ mun jan sur nar jācẖėh sabaḏ sār ek liv lā▫ī hai.

 

Awareness of (dharam) righteous (karam) deeds (hai) is (paaee) obtained from (poorai) the perfect (satigur-u) true guru; (ja ki) whose (seyva = service) obedience/guidance, (sidh) yogis, (saddh) saints, (mun-i) sages and (sur-i nar- = god-like persons) devotees (jaachah-i) seek; they (laaee) fix (eyk = one) single-minded attention on the guru’s (saar-u) sublime (sabad = word) teachings.

 

ਫੁਨਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਨਹਾਰੁ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ਹੈ ॥ ਭਰਮ ਭੂਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਛੁਟਹੁ ਜੂਨੀ ਸੰਘਾਰ ਜਮ ਕੋ ਨ ਡੰਡ ਕਾਲ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਈ ਹੈ ॥

Fun jānai ko ṯerā apār nirbẖa▫o nirankār akath kathanhār ṯujẖėh bujẖā▫ī hai.   Bẖaram bẖūle sansār cẖẖutahu jūnī sangẖār jam ko na dand kāl gurmaṯ ḏẖeā▫ī hai.

 

(Phun-i) and (ko) who (jaanai) knows (teyra) Your limits/expanse, o (apaar-u) Infinite Master? You are (nirbhau = fearless) the highest Master, (nirankaar-u) Formless and (akath) beyond description; only one whom (tujhah-i) You (bujhaaee) give understanding (kathanhaar-u) can describe – Your Naam/virtues and commands.

O (sansaar = world) human beings, you are (bhooley) misled by (bharam) delusion; obey the true guru and (chhuttah-u) free yourselves from (ddandd) punishment by (jam kaal = messenger of death) Divine justice and not keep (sanghaar = death) suffering births and deaths in numerous (joonee) in life forms.

 

ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਮੁਗਧ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜਪੁ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Man parāṇī mugaḏẖ bīcẖār ahinis jap ḏẖaram karam pūrai saṯgur pā▫ī hai. ||2||

 

O (mugadh = foolish) ignorant (praanee) human (man) mind, (beechaar-u) reflect and (jap-u) remember (ahinis-i) day and night, to awareness of (dharam) righteous (karam) deeds (paaee hai) obtained from (poorai) the perfect (satigur-u) true guru.

 

ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਪਰ ॥ ਕਵਨ ਉਪਮਾ ਦੇਉ ਕਵਨ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਰੇਉ ਏਕ ਮੁਖ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਸਹੁ ਜੁਗ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਰ ॥

Ha▫o bal bal jā▫o saṯgur sācẖe nām par.  Kavan upmā ḏe▫o kavan sevā sare▫o ek mukẖ rasnā rasahu jug jor kar.

 

(Hau) I (bal-i bal-i jaau = am sacrifice) give up my ego and submit (par) to (naam) virtues and commands of (saachey = true) the Eternal Almighty (satigur) true guru.

Question: (Kavan) with whom do I (deyo = give) show (upma) similarity of the Almighty; (kavan) which form (seyva) worship should I (karau) perform.

Answer: I should (rasah-u) be happy to praise the Almighty with (eyk) one (mukh) mouth; and (rasna) tongue; and (jor-i) folding (jug) the pair of (kar) hands, i.e. happily accept/carry out Divine commands.

 

ਫੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਜਾਨੁ ਅਨਤ ਦੂਜਾ ਨ ਮਾਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੋ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਦੀਨੋ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਿਦ ਧਰ ॥

Fun man bacẖ karam jān anaṯ ḏūjā na mān nām so apār sār ḏīno gur riḏ ḏẖar.

 

(Phun-i) and also (jaan-u = know) be conscious of the Almighty in (man = mind) thoughts, (bach/bachan = words) speech and (kram) deeds; not (maan-u = accept) recognize (dooja = second) any other Master and (dhar) keep in (rid) mind (saar-u) the sublime Naam/virtues and commands of (so = that) the (apaar-u) Infinite Almighty (deeno = given) imparted (gur-i) by the guru.

ਨਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਕਵਿ ਪਾਰਸ ਪਰਸ ਕਚ ਕੰਚਨਾ ਹੁਇ ਚੰਦਨਾ ਸੁਬਾਸੁ ਜਾਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਅਨ ਤਰ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਦੇਖਤ ਦੁਆਰੇ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਹੀ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ਜੀ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਪਰ ॥੩॥

Nal▫y kav pāras paras kacẖ kancẖnā hu▫e cẖanḏnā subās jās simraṯ an ṯar.  Jā ke ḏekẖaṯ ḏu▫āre kām kroḏẖ hī nivāre jī ha▫o bal bal jā▫o saṯgur sācẖe nām par. ||3||

 

Says (kav-i) the poet/bard Nal: The way (kach) an ordinary metal – is believed to become – (kanchna) gold by (paras) touching Paaras, and (subaan-u) fragrance of (chandna) sandalwood tree (jaas-u) goes in (an) other (tar) trees in vicinity, similarly those who (simrat) remember and practice Naam, transform others in their in company.

The Almighty, (deykhat) by seeing (ja key) whose (duaarey) mansion, i.e. being aware of Naam, keeps (kaam) lust and (krodh) anger (nivaarey) away; (Hau) I (bal-i bal-i jaau = am sacrifice) give up my ego and submit (par) to (naam) virtues and commands of (saachey = true) the Eternal Almighty (satigur) true guru. 3.

 

ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਤਖਤੁ ਦੀਅਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ॥

Rāj jog ṯakẖaṯ ḏī▫an gur Rāmḏās.

 

Guru Raamdas (deean-u = given) was bestowed (takhat-u = throne) the seat of guru-ship of (raaj-u) the royal (jog-u) method of union with the Almighty, i.e. union with God through righteous life of a householder.

 

ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਚੰਦੁ ਜਗਤ ਭਯੋ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਤਾਰਨਿ ਮਨੁਖ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਜਨ ਕੀਅਉ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਗਦ ਦੀਅਉ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਭੂਤ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਜਮਤ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ॥

Parathme Nānak cẖanḏ jagaṯ bẖa▫yo ānanḏ ṯāran manukẖ▫y jan kī▫a▫o pargās.  Gur angaḏ ḏī▫a▫o niḏẖān akath kathā gi▫ān pancẖ bẖūṯ bas kīne jamaṯ na ṯarās.

 

The guru lineage (prathmey = first) started with Guru Nanak, (chand-u = moon) as the enlightener, – simple spiritual living – with which (jagat = world) the people (bhayo became) were happy; he (keeo = made, pragaas = light) enlightened (manukhya jan) the people on how (taaran-i = swim) to get across the world-ocean, i.e. be free of cycles of births and deaths.

He (deeau = gave) imparted this (nidhaan-u) treasure of (akath kathaa) indescribable wealth of (giaan-u) awareness of Naam to Guru Angad by which he (keeney = made, bas-i = under control) controlled (bhoot) action organs from sins and had no (traas) fear of (jamat) agent of Divine justice – who prevents the erring souls from union with the Creator and puts them in cycles of reincarnation.

 

ਗੁਰ ਅਮਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿ, ਕਲਿਜੁਗਿ ਰਾਖੀ ਪਤਿ, ਅਘਨ ਦੇਖਤ ਗਤੁ ਚਰਨ ਕਵਲ ਜਾਸ ॥

Gur amar gurū sarī saṯ kalijug rākẖī paṯ agẖan ḏekẖaṯ gaṯ cẖaran kaval jās.

 

Guru Angad was followed by (sri) the revered (gur) great (sat-i) true Guru (amar-u) Amardas compliance with whose teachings (raakhee) protects  (pat-i) honour, i.e. one does not fall prey to temptations, (kalijug) in this age of conflicts; and (deykhat) seeing/following (jaas) whose (kaval = lotus, charan = feet) presence/example (aghan) vices (gat-u = run) are given up.

 

ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਨ੍ਯ੍ਯਿਉ ਮਨੁ, ਤਬ ਹੀ ਭਯਉ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨੁ, ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਤਖਤੁ ਦੀਅਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ॥੪॥

Sabẖ biḏẖ māni▫ya▫o man ṯab hī bẖa▫ya▫o parsann rāj jog ṯakẖaṯ ḏī▫an gur Rāmḏās. ||4||

 

When he (maaniyo) was satisfied in (sabh) every (bidh-i) way, Guru Amardas (bhayau) was (pras’nn) pleased (tab hi) only then he (deean-u) gave to Guru Ramdas, (takhat-u = throne) the seat of guru-ship of (raaj-u) the royal (jog-u) method of union with the Almighty, i.e. union with God through righteous life of a house-holder. 4.

 

ਰਡ ॥ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਧਾਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਿਉ ਧਰਤਿ ਅਰੁ ਵਿਉਮੁ, ਅਰੁ ਪਵਣੁ ਤੇ ਨੀਰ ਸਰ ਅਵਰ ਅਨਲ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਕੀਅਉ ॥ ਸਸਿ ਰਿਖਿ ਨਿਸਿ ਸੂਰ ਦਿਨਿ ਸੈਲ ਤਰੂਅ ਫਲ ਫੁਲ ਦੀਅਉ ॥

Rad.   Jisahi ḏẖāri▫ya▫o ḏẖaraṯ ar vi▫um ar pavaṇ ṯe nīr sar avar anal anāḏ kī▫a▫o.  Sas rikẖ nis sūr ḏin sail ṯarū▫a fal ful ḏī▫a▫o.

 

Radd musical measure. The Creator (jisah-i) who (dhaaryau) has established (dharat-i) the earth (ar-u) and (viaum-u) sky, (ar-u) and (pavan-u) air (tey) and (sar = pool) oceans of (neer) water; (avar) also (keeau) made (anal) fire and (anaad-i) grains etc. for use.

As also created sources of light, (sas-i) the moon and (rikh-i) stars (nis-i) at night, (soor) sun (din-i) during the day; the Creator created (sail) rocks, as also (tarooa) trees/plants which (deeau) give (phal) fruits and (phul) flowers.

 

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਸਪਤ ਸਮੁਦ੍ਰ ਕਿਅ ਧਾਰਿਓ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਜਾਸੁ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿ ਪਾਇਓ ਗੁਰ ਅਮਰ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੧॥੫॥

Sur nar sapaṯ samuḏar ki▫a ḏẖāri▫o ṯaribẖavaṇ jās.  So▫ī ek nām har nām saṯ pā▫i▫o gur amar pargās. ||1||5||

 

And (jaas-u) who (kia) created (sur-i) gods, (nar) creatures (sapat) the seven (samudr) ocean (dhaario) established (tribhavan) the three regions – sky, land and water.

Guru Ramdas (paaio) received from (gur) Guru (amar) Amardas, (pragaas-u = enlightenment) awareness of (naam-u) virtues and commands of (soee) the One (sat-i = true) the eternal (har-i) Almighty Creator. 1. 5.

 

ਕਚਹੁ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਭਇਅਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਸ੍ਰਵਣਹਿ ਸੁਣਿਓ ॥ ਬਿਖੁ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹੁਯਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਣਿਅਉ ॥

Kacẖahu kancẖan bẖa▫i▫a▫o sabaḏ gur sarvaṇėh suṇi▫o.   Bikẖ ṯe amriṯ hu▫ya▫o nām saṯgur mukẖ bẖaṇi▫a▫o.

 

Like touch of Paaras is believed to make (kanchan-u) gold (kachahu) from ordinary metal, an ignorant person who (sunio) listens to/complies with (sabad-u = word) teachings of (gur) the guru, s/he (bhaiau) becomes enlightened. One who obeys (naam) commands (bhaniau = spoken) given by (satigur) the true guru, s/he (huyau) becomes (amrit) sweet (tey) from (bikh-u = poison) bitter – s/he gives up vices and becomes virtuous.

 

ਲੋਹਉ ਹੋਯਉ ਲਾਲੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਦਿ ਧਾਰੈ ॥ ਪਾਹਣ ਮਾਣਕ ਕਰੈ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਹਿਅਉ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥

Loha▫o ho▫ya▫o lāl naḏar saṯgur jaḏ ḏẖārai.   Pāhaṇ māṇak karai gi▫ān gur kahi▫a▫o bīcẖārai.

 

(Jad-i) when (satigur-u) the true guru (dhaarai) casts (nadar-i) sight of grace, i.e. is kind to guide, one (hoyau) becomes (laal-u = precious stone) virtuous (luhau = from iron) from an ignorant person.

(Bechaarai) reflection on/compliance with (kahiau = spoken) teachings of (gur) the guru (karai) causes (paahan) a stone to become (maanak) a precious stone, i.e. an ordinary person becomes sublime.

 

ਕਾਠਹੁ ਸ੍ਰੀਖੰਡ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਅਉ ਦੁਖ ਦਰਿਦ੍ਰ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਗਇਅ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਚਰਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਪਰਸਿਆ ਸੇ ਪਸੁ ਪਰੇਤ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਭਇਅ ॥੨॥੬॥

Kāṯẖahu sarīkẖand saṯgur kī▫a▫o ḏukẖ ḏariḏar ṯin ke ga▫i▫a.   Saṯgurū cẖaran jinĥ parsi▫ā se pas pareṯ sur nar bẖa▫i▫a. ||2||6||

 

Those (jinh) whom (satigur-i) the true guru (keeau) makes (sreekhandd) sandalwood (kaatthahu) from ordinary wood, i.e. helps to emulate Divine virtues and commands – (key = of, tin = them) their (dukh) pains and (daridr) miseries – caused by vices due to ignorance of Naam – (gaia = leave) end.

(Sey) those (pas-u) animals and (preyt) ghosts, i.e. ignorant persons wandering aimlessly, (jinh) who (parsiaa) touch (charan) feet, i.e. comply with instructions – of (satiguru) the true guru, (bhaia) become (sur-i nar) god-like persons, i.e. they remain focused on living by Naam. 2. 6.

 

ਜਾਮਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੋਇ ਵਲਿ ਧਨਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਗਾਰਵੁ ਦਿਜਇ ॥ ਜਾਮਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੋਇ ਵਲਿ ਲਖ ਬਾਹੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਿਜਇ ॥

Jām gurū ho▫e val dẖanėh ki▫ā gārav ḏij▫e.   Jām gurū ho▫e val lakẖ bāhe ki▫ā kij▫e.

 

(Jaam-i) when the guru is on one’s (val-i) side, i.e. when one has awareness of Naam given by the guru, then s/he (dijey-i) gives (kiaa =  what?) no (gaarav-u = pride) importance (dhanah-i) to riches – because s/he has the wealth of awareness of Naam imparted by the guru.

When the guru is on one’s side, i.e. when one has awareness of Naam given by the guru, then a lakh (baahey = arms) adversaries, can (kijey) do (kiaa = what?) nothing, i.e. temptations cannot entice.

 

ਜਾਮਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੋਇ ਵਲਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਅਰੁ ਧਿਆਨ ਅਨਨ ਪਰਿ ॥ ਜਾਮਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੋਇ ਵਲਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਖੀ ਸੁ ਸਚਹ ਘਰਿ ॥

Jām gurū ho▫e val gi▫ān ar ḏẖi▫ān anan par.   Jām gurū ho▫e val sabaḏ sākẖī so sacẖah gẖar.

 

When the guru is on one’s side – when one follows the guru -, s/he has (giaan) awareness of Naam and fixes (dhiaan) attention (par-i) on, i.e. invokes and obeys, (anan) none other than the Almighty.

When the guru is on one’s side, i.e. when one is guided by the guru, then (sabad-u = word) Divine commands become (su) his/her (saakhee) companion/guide and leads him/her (ghar-i = to house) union with (sachah) the Eternal.

 

ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜਪੈ ਦਾਸੁ ਭਟੁ ਬੇਨਤਿ ਕਹੈ ॥ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦ ਮਹਿ ਧਰੈ ਸੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਹ ਥੇ ਰਹੈ ॥੩॥੭॥

Jo gurū gurū ahinis japai ḏās bẖat benaṯ kahai.   Jo gurū nām riḏ mėh ḏẖarai so janam maraṇ ḏuh the rahai. ||3||7||

 

(Kahai = says, beynat-i = request) submits (daas-u = servant) humble (bhatt-u) bard: One (jo) who (japai) remembers and complies with (guru guru – twice) teachings of the guru in thought and deed (ahainis-i) day and night, i.e. in all activities, and (jo) who (dharai) keeps Naam (mah-i) in (rid) mind, (s0) that person (rahai) is saved (they) from (duh) both (maran = death) succumbing to vices and taking (janam) birth again. 3.7

 

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੋਰੁ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਸਿਧਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

Gur bin gẖor anḏẖār gurū bin samajẖ na āvai.   Gur bin suraṯ na siḏẖ gurū bin mukaṯ na pāvai.

 

There is (ghor-u = intense) pitch (andhaar-u) dark, i.e. the mind is totally ignorant of Naam and (na aavai) does not (samajh) understand – the purpose of life and how to lead it, (bin-u) without the guru’s guidance.

One does have (surat-i) awareness of Naam and hence (sidh-i) success in life – against fight with temptations – (bin-u) without following the guru; one does not (paavai) obtain (mukat-i) liberation from temptations and hence from rebirth, without following the guru.

 

ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰੁ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰੁ ਸਬਦ ਸਪੁੰਨ ਅਘਨ ਕਟਹਿ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੇ ॥

Gur kar sacẖ bīcẖār gurū kar re man mere.   Gur kar sabaḏ sapunn agẖan katėh sabẖ ṯere.

 

O (meyrey) my (man) mind, (kar-u) take/adopt the true guru, (kar-u = do, beechaar-u = reflection) reflect on his teachings and (kar-u) consider them to be (sach-u) true/right and – follow them.

(Kar-u) take as guru one who is (sapu’nn) well aware of (sabad) Divine commands; he will (kattah-i = cut) get rid of (sabh) all (teyrey) your (aghan) wrongdoings.

 

ਗੁਰੁ ਨਯਣਿ ਬਯਣਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿ ਕਵਿ ਨਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਕਹਿ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨ ਦੇਖਿਅਉ ਨਹੁ ਕੀਅਉ ਤੇ ਅਕਯਥ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਮਹਿ ॥੪॥੮॥

Gur na▫yaṇ ba▫yaṇ gur gur karahu gurū saṯ kav nal▫y kahi.   Jin gurū na ḏekẖi▫a▫o nahu kī▫a▫o ṯe akyath sansār mėh. ||4||8||

 

(Karahu) do/remember teachings of (gur-u) the great/true guru your (nayan-i = eyes) in sight, i.e. never cast evil eye on others’ wealth or spouse; and (bayan-i) in word/speech, i.e. do not slander/hurt anyone or speak untruth; the guru’s teachings (sat-i = true) are forever, (kah-i) says (kav-i) the poet/bard (nalyay) Nal.

Those (jin-i) who have neither (deykhau = seen) found nor (neeau) take/adopt the true guru, they are (akyath) not successful in (sansaar = word) in life – in obtaining liberation from temptations. 4. 8.

ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰੁ ਮਨ  ਮੇਰੇ ॥ ਤਾਰਣ ਤਰਣ ਸਮ੍ਰਥੁ ਕਲਿਜੁਗਿ ਸੁਨਤ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਸਬਦ ਜਿਸੁ ਕੇਰੇ ॥

Gurū gurū gur kar man mere.   Ŧāraṇ ṯaraṇ samrath kalijug sunaṯ samāḏẖ sabaḏ jis kere.

 

(Meyrey) my mind, (kar-u) keep in mind teachings of (gur) the great (guru guru) guru in thought and deed. (Sunat) listening to and complying with (keyrey = of, jis-u = who) whose (sabad = words) teachings is (samaadh-i) deep meditation and is (samrath-u) capable as (taran) ship (taaran) to ferry across the world-ocean to God, in this (kalijug-i) age of conflicts – it helps to overcome temptations in the world and not be reborn.

 

ਫੁਨਿ ਦੁਖਨਿ ਨਾਸੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਯਕੁ ਸੂਰਉ ਜੋ ਧਰਤ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਬਸਤ ਤਿਹ ਨੇਰੇ ॥ ਪੂਰਉ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਮੁਖੁ ਦੇਖਤ ਅਘ ਜਾਹਿ ਪਰੇਰੇ ॥

Fun ḏukẖan nās sukẖ▫ḏā▫yak sūra▫o jo ḏẖaraṯ ḏẖi▫ān basaṯ ṯih nere.  Pūra▫o purakẖ riḏai har simraṯ mukẖ ḏekẖaṯ agẖ jāhi parere.

 

(Phun-i) further, teachings of (soorau) the brave guru – who has himself subdued vices -, (sukhdaayak-u) provide peace, they (naas) destroy/end (dukhan-i) pain/troubles – by guiding not to transgress; one (jo) who (dharat) fixes (dhiaan-u) attention on the guru’s teachings, (basat) abides (neyrey) near (tih = that) the Almighty, i.e. keeps virtues and commands of the Almighty in mind.

The true guru is (poorau) an accomplished (purakh-u) personality; his teachings to (simrat) remember (har-i) the Almighty (ridai) in mind, and (deykhat) seeing/following (mukh-u = face) example of the guru cause (agh) sins (jaah-i) go (pareyrey) away.

 

ਜਉ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਚਾਹਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥੫॥੯॥

Ja▫o har buḏẖ riḏẖ siḏẖ cẖāhaṯ gurū gurū gur kar man mere. ||5||9||

 

(Jau) if you (chaahat) wish to have good (budh-i) understanding of virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty, and acquire (ridh-i sidh-i) miraculous powers – to achieve what you wish – then, (meyrey) my mind, (kar-u) remember teachings of (gur) the great (guru guru) guru in thought and deed. 5. 9.

 

ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਗਰੂ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਯਉ ॥ ਹੁਤੀ ਜੁ ਪਿਆਸ ਪਿਊਸ ਪਿਵੰਨ ਕੀ, ਬੰਛਤ ਸਿਧਿ ਕਉ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਾਯਉ ॥ ਪੂਰਨ ਭੋ ਮਨ ਠਉਰ ਬਸੋ ਰਸ ਬਾਸਨ ਸਿਉ ਜੁ ਦਹੰ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਯਉ ॥

Gurū mukẖ ḏekẖ garū sukẖ pā▫ya▫o.  Huṯī jo pi▫ās pi▫ūs pivann kī bancẖẖaṯ siḏẖ ka▫o biḏẖ milā▫ya▫o.  Pūran bẖo man ṯẖa▫ur baso ras bāsan si▫o jo ḏahaʼn ḏis ḏẖā▫ya▫o.

 

One (paayau) obtains (garoo) great/perfect (sukh-u) peace (deykh-i) by seeing/following (mukh-u = face) example of the guru – and not committing any transgressions.

For one (j-u) who (hutee) has (piaas) thirst (ki) of (piva’nn) drinking (pioos) nectar, i.e. one who banchhat) wishes to find the Almighty within, the guru’s teachings (milaayau) provide (bidh-i) the method of (sidh-i) success/achieving that.

(Man) the mind which (dhaayau) runs in (dah’n) ten (dis-i) directions, i.e. all over, (kau) to (ras = pleasure) satisfy (baasa/vaashna) desires, becomes (pooran) fully (tthaur) steady and his/her (bho = body) actions accord with this.

 

ਗੋਬਿੰਦਵਾਲੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪੁਰੀ ਸਮ ਜਲ੍ਯ੍ਯਨ ਤੀਰਿ ਬਿਪਾਸ ਬਨਾਯਉ ॥ ਗਯਉ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਬਰਖਨ ਕੋ ਸੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਗਰੂ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਯਉ ॥੬॥੧੦॥

Gobinḏ vāl gobinḏ purī sam jal▫yan ṯīr bipās banā▫ya▫o.  Ga▫ya▫o ḏukẖ ḏūr barkẖan ko so gurū mukẖ ḏekẖ garū sukẖ pā▫ya▫o. ||6||10||

 

The town of (gobindvaal-u) Goindvaal which Guru Amardas built (teer-i) on the bank of (jalyan = water) river (bipaas) Beas, is (sam) like (puri = town) abode of (gobind = master of the world) the Almighty, i.e. where everyone is at peace by leading life by Naam as taught by the guru.
Those who live by Naam, (s-u) their (dukh-u) distress (ko) of (barkhan/baras) years (gayau = goes) ends; they (paayau) obtain (garoo) great/perfect (sukh-u) peace (deykh-i) by seeing/following (mukh-u = face) example of the guru, – and not committing any transgressions.  6. 10.

 

ਸਮਰਥ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਹਥੁ ਧਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਅਉ, ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਚਰੰਨ ਅਘੰਨ ਹਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਧਿਆਨ, ਸੁ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਨੇ ਸੁਤੁ ਭਾਨ ਡਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥

Samrath gurū sir hath ḏẖar▫ya▫o.  Gur kīnī kirpā har nām ḏī▫a▫o jis ḏekẖ cẖarann agẖann har▫ya▫o.  Nis bāsur ek samān ḏẖi▫ān so nām sune suṯ bẖān dar▫ya▫o.

 

(Samrath) the able Guru Amardas (dharyau) placed (hath-u) hand (sir-i) on the head, i.e. blessed his disciple. He (keenee) showed (kripa) kindness and (deeau = gave) imparted awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands as guide for life to him; (deykh-i = by seeing) placing the self in (jis-u = whose) his (chara’nn = feet) care and obedience, all (agha’nn) sins/faults of the disciple (haryau) are taken away.

The disciple paid (eyk = one, samaan = equally) continuous (dhiaan) attention to Naam (nis-i) night and (baasur) day, i.e. in all activities; (suney) hearing of (su) that Naam, (sut-u) son of (bhaan) the sun, i.e. Jam, the metaphoric agent of Divine justice, (ddaryau) feels scared, – since it has orders not to go near those who live by Naam.

 

ਭਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਸੁ ਆਸ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ, ਪਾਰਸੁ ਭੇਟਿ ਪਰਸੁ ਕਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਸਤਿ ਕੀਯਉ, ਸਮਰਥ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਹਥੁ ਧਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥੭॥੧੧॥

Bẖan ḏās so ās jagṯar gurū kī pāras bẖet paras kar▫ya▫o.  Rāmḏās gurū har saṯ kī▫ya▫o samrath gurū sir hath ḏẖar▫ya▫o. ||7||11||

 

(Bhan-i) says (daas = servant) the humble bard: Guru Amardas is like (paaras-u) Paaras, the stone which is believed to change a base metal to gold by its touch; to fulfil (aas) wish of (jagatr) the world to have the guru, (bheytt-i) with his meeting/guidance Guru Amar Das (karyau) made his disciple as (paras-u) Paaras, i.e. the guru.

(Har-i) the Almighty (keeyau) made Guru Ramdas (sat-i) immortal, i.e. embodiment of God when (samrath) able Guru Amardas (dharyau) placed (hath-u) hand (sir-i) on the head, i.e. blessed the disciple. 7. 11.

 

ਅਬ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਦਾਸ ਭਾਟ ਕੀ ਲਾਜ ॥ ਜੈਸੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਲਾਜ ਭਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਕੀ ਹਰਨਾਖਸ ਫਾਰੇ ਕਰ ਆਜ ॥ ਫੁਨਿ ਦ੍ਰੋਪਤੀ ਲਾਜ ਰਖੀ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ ਛੀਨਤ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਦੀਨ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਜ ॥

Ab rākẖo ḏās bẖāt kī lāj.   Jaisī rākẖī lāj bẖagaṯ par▫hilāḏ kī harnākẖas fāre kar āj.  Fun ḏaropaṯī lāj rakẖī har parabẖ jī cẖẖīnaṯ basṯar ḏīn baho sāj.

 

O Almighty, (ab = now) in this age/Kaliyug, please (raakhahu) preserve (laaj) honour of this (daas = servant) humble (bhaatt/bhatt) bard, i.e. all devotees.

(Jaisee) like in Treyta Yug, You took the form of man-lion and (raakhee) preserved (laaj) honor/life (ki) of Your (bhagat) devotee Prahilad and, with (aaj) nails of (kar) the hands (phaarey) tore/killed Harnaakhas – who tried to kill his son Prahilad.

(Phun-i) then in Duapar Yug You (deen) gave (bah-u) plenty of clothes (saaj) to cover and (raakhi) preserve honor of (droptee) Draupadi of the Mahabharata, who was (chheenat = being snatched, bastr = clothes) being disrobed by evil people.

 

ਸੋਦਾਮਾ ਅਪਦਾ ਤੇ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਗਨਿਕਾ ਪੜ੍ਹਤ ਪੂਰੇ ਤਿਹ ਕਾਜ ॥ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਲਜੁਗ ਹੋਇ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਦਾਸ ਭਾਟ ਕੀ ਲਾਜ ॥੮॥੧੨॥

Soḏāmā apḏā ṯe rākẖi▫ā ganikā paṛĥaṯ pūre ṯih kāj.  Sarī saṯgur suparsan kaljug ho▫e rākẖo ḏās bẖāt kī lāj. ||8||12||

 

Also in Duapar Yug, You (raakhiaa) emancipated (sodaama) the devotee Sudama (tey) from (apda = tribulations) poverty; You (poorey) fulfilled (kaaj) need to be saved of Ganika, a sex worker, by causing her to (parrhat = read) utter the mantra of Raam.

O (sri) revered (satigur) true guru, only practice of Naam can save in this (kaljug-i) age of conflicts/duality, please (hoey) be (suprasa’nn) well-pleased/kind and (raakhahu) preserve (laaj) honor of (daas = servant) humble (bhaat/bhatt) bard, i.e. save all devotees by imparting awareness of Naam. 8. 12.

ਝੋਲਨਾ ॥ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਪੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀਅਹੁ ॥ ਸਬਦੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੈ, ਨਾਮੁ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਅਪੈ, ਰਸਨਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਸੈ, ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੀਅਹੁ ॥

Jẖolnā.   Gurū gur gurū gur gurū jap parānī▫ahu.   Sabaḏ har har japai nām nav niḏẖ apai rasan ahinis rasai saṯ kar jānī▫ahu.

 

Jholna – a musical measure. O (praaneeah-u = creatures) human beings, (japu) remember and obey teachings of (gur) the great guru – thrice – in thought, word and deed.

The guru himself (japai) remembers and obeys (har-i = dispels vices) the purifying and (har-i = makes green) purifying (sabad-u = word) Divine commands; and (apai/arpai = gives) imparts awareness of (nav nidh-i =nine treasures) the valuable Naam. And the disciple’s (rasna) tongue (rasai = relishes) enjoys praising the Almighty (ahinis-i) day and night, i.e. in all activities; (jaaneeahu) know this (kar-i) as (sat-i) true.

 

ਫੁਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰੰਗ ਪਾਈਐ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖਹਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ, ਅੰਨ ਮਾਰਗ ਤਜਹੁ, ਭਜਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੀਅਹੁ ॥ ਬਚਨ ਗੁਰ ਰਿਦਿ ਧਰਹੁ, ਪੰਚ ਭੂ ਬਸਿ ਕਰਹੁ, ਜਨਮੁ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਰਹੁ, ਦ੍ਵਾਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਨੀਅਹੁ ॥

Fun parem rang pā▫ī▫ai gurmukẖėh ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai ann mārag ṯajahu bẖajahu har geānī▫ahu.  Bacẖan gur riḏ ḏẖarahu pancẖ bẖū bas karahu janam kul uḏẖrahu ḏavār har mānī▫ahu.

 

(Phun-i) thus (rang paaeeai = get colour) is imbued with (preym) love of the Almighty; so (tajahu) forsake (a’nn) other (maarag) paths – of rituals, superstitions, worships; o (gyaaneeahu) learned/wise people, (bhajahu) praise and obey (har-i) the Almighty.

(Dharah-u) keep (bachan = words) teachings/guidance of (gur) the guru (rid-i) in mind, to (karahu = make, bas-i = under control) control the wandering (panch) five sensory (bhoo) organs – so as not to be tempted; (udhrahu) save (janam-u = human birth) human life from vices and bring good name to your (kul) lineage; and (maaneeahu) be accepted at (duaar) court of, i.e. for union with, the (har-i) the Almighty.

 

ਜਉ ਤ ਸਭ ਸੁਖ ਇਤ ਉਤ ਤੁਮ ਬੰਛਵਹੁ, ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਪੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀਅਹੁ ॥੧॥੧੩॥

Ja▫o ṯa sabẖ sukẖ iṯ uṯ ṯum bancẖẖvahu gurū gur gurū gur gurū jap parānī▫ahu. ||1||13||

 

(Jau) if (ta) you (banchhvahu = seek) wish to have (sabh) all (sukh) comforts (it) here and in (ut = there) the hereafter, (jap-u) remember and obey teachings of (gur) the great guru – thrice – in thought, word and deed, o (praaneeah-u = creatures) human beings. 1. 13.

 

ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਪਿ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ॥ ਅਗਮ ਗੁਨ ਜਾਨੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ, ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਧਰਹੁ ਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੁ, ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬਚਨ ਗੁਰ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਰਿ ॥

Gurū gur gurū gur gurū jap saṯ kar.  Agam gun jān niḏẖān har man ḏẖarahu ḏẖeān ahinis karahu bacẖan gur riḏai ḏẖar.

 

(Kar-i) taking them as (sat-i = true) the right ones, i.e. with faith in mind, (jap-i) remember and obey teachings of (gur) the great guru – thrice – in thought, word and deed.

The Almighty is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension by ourselves; but one can (jaan-u = know) obtain (nidhaan-u = treasure) awareness of (gun) Divine virtues from the guru; (ahinis-i = day and night) ever (dharahu = keep) fix (dhyaan-u) attention (man-i) of the mind on commands of (har-i) the Almighty; (karahu) do it (dhar-i) keeping (bachan = words) teachings of (gur) the guru (ridai) in mind.

 

ਫੁਨਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਲ ਬਿਮਲ ਅਥਾਹ ਮਜਨੁ ਕਰਹੁ, ਸੰਤ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਤਰਹੁ, ਨਾਮ ਸਚ ਰੰਗ ਸਰਿ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਜਪੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਰਸਿ ਕਰਤ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ॥

Fun gurū jal bimal athāh majan karahu sanṯ gursikẖ ṯarahu nām sacẖ rang sar.  Saḏā nirvair nirankār nirbẖa▫o japai parem gur sabaḏ ras karaṯ ḏariṛ bẖagaṯ har.

 

(Phun-i) then (karahu = do) take (majan-u) bath in (athaah = bottomless) the deep pool of (bimal) clean (jal) water of the guru, i.e. obey the purifying teachings, of the guru; this is how you can (tarahu = swim) get across (sar-i = pool) the world-ocean, through (rang) loving obedience to Naam/virtues and commands of (sach) the Eternal, o (sant = saints) seeker (gursikh) Sikhs/disciples of the guru.

One who (sadaa) ever (preym) lovingly (japai) remembers and obeys (nirvair) the enmity-free, (niraankaar-u) Formless (nirbhau = fearless) Supreme Master, (ras-i = immersed in) by following (sabad = words) teachings of (gur) the guru; s/he (karat = does) acts with (drirr-u) firm commitment to (bhagat-i = devotion) obedience of (har-i) the Almighty.

 

ਮੁਗਧ ਮਨ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਤਜਹੁ, ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਜਹੁ, ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਪੁ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ॥੨॥੧੪॥

Mugaḏẖ man bẖaram ṯajahu nām gurmukẖ bẖajahu gurū gur gurū gur gurū jap saṯ kar. ||2||14||

 

O (mugadh = foolish) ignorant (man = mind) human being, (tajah-u) give up (bhram-u = delusion) other ideas, and (bhajahu = invoke) remember and obey Naam/Divine virtues and commands (gurmukh-i) with the guru’s guidance; (kar-i) accepting them as (sat-i = true) the right ones, i.e. with faith in mind, (japu) remember and obey teachings of (gur) the great guru – thrice – in thought, word and deed. 2. 14.

ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਉਦਧਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ, ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਗ ਹੀਰ, ਮਣਿ ਮਿਲਤ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈਐ ॥

Gurū gur gur karahu gurū har pā▫ī▫ai.  Uḏaḏẖ gur gahir gambẖīr be▫anṯ har nām nag hīr maṇ milaṯ liv lā▫ī▫ai.

 

(Karahu) take/follow teachings of (guru gur gur) the guru in thought, word and deed; this is how (har-i) the Almighty Guru (paaeeai) is found.

Teachings of (gur-u) the guru are (gahar) a deep and (gambheer) profound (udadh-i) ocean of knowledge; they impart awareness of (beyant-u) infinitely valuable Naam/Divine virtues and commands like (nag) precious stones and (heer) jewels; (man-i) the gem (milat) is found, i.e. the Almighty is experienced within by (laaeeai) fixing (liv) attention on Naam with the guru’s guidance.

 

ਫੁਨਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਲ ਸਰਸ ਕਰਤ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਪਰਸ ਮੈਲੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਿਰਤ ਸਬਦਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਈਐ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਛੁਟਕੰਤ ਸਦ ਦ੍ਵਾਰਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਗ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਮਲ ਸਰ ਸੰਤ ਸਿਖ ਨਾਈਐ ॥

Fun gurū parmal saras karaṯ kancẖan paras mail ḏurmaṯ hiraṯ sabaḏ gur ḏẖa▫yā▫ī▫ai.  Amriṯ parvāh cẖẖutkanṯ saḏ ḏavār jis ga▫yān gur bimal sar sanṯ sikẖ nā▫ī▫ai.

 

(Phun-i) again, the guru is like (parmal) the sandalwood tree which (karat = makes, saras = with elixir) imparts its fragrance to plants in its vicinity. It is like the Paaras which is believed to change a base metal to (kanchan-u) gold with its (paras) touch; (dhyaaeeai) paying attention to/complying (sabad-i = to the word) to teachings of the guru, (hirat) takes away (mail-u) the dirt of (durmat-i) evil counsel/ideas from the mind.

At the guru’s (duaar) abode, (parvaah) springs of (a’mmrit) nectar, i.e. expositions on Naam are (sad) ever (chhuttkant = released) being delivered in congregation (jis-u = whose) of the guru.

(Sant = saint) the seeker Sikhs/disciples (naaeeai/nhaaeeai) bathe in (bimal) the clean (sar) pool, i.e. learn/purify themselves with (gyaan) awareness of (bimal = clean) the pristine Naam through teachings of (gur) the guru.

 

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਰਹੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੩॥੧੫॥

Nām nirbāṇ niḏẖān har ur ḏẖarahu gurū gur gur karahu gurū har pā▫ī▫ai. ||3||15||

                                                  

(Dharah-u) keep (nidhaan) the treasure of (nirbaan-u = pure) the pristine Naam/Divine virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty (ur-i) in mind (karahu) adopt/follow teachings of (guru gur gur) the guru in thought, word and deed; this is how (har-i) the Almighty Guru (paaeeai) is found. 3. 15

 

ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਪੁ ਮੰਨ ਰੇ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ਸਿਵ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸੁਰ ਅਸੁਰ ਗਣ ਤਰਹਿ ਤੇਤੀਸ, ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਣਿ ਕੰਨ ਰੇ ॥

Gurū gur gurū gur gurū jap man re.  Jā kī sev siv siḏẖ sāḏẖik sur asur gaṇ ṯarėh ṯeṯīs gur bacẖan suṇ kann re.

 

(Rey) o human being (jap-u) remember and (ma’nn) obey (gur-u) the great guru – thrice – in thought word and deed.

(Ki = of, ja = who) by whose (seyv = service) obedience, gods like (siv) Shiva and (sidh) yogis, (saadhik) seekers, (sur) gods (asur) demons, (gan-u) servants of gods, (teytees) the thirty three crore gods of Hindu faith (tarah-i = swim) overcome vices and are saved, (sun-i) listening to (bachan = words) teachings of the guru with (ka’nn) ears – and /obeying them.

 

ਫੁਨਿ ਤਰਹਿ ਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਹਿਤ ਭਗਤ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਹਿ, ਤਰਿਓ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਤ ਮੁਨਿ ਜੰਨ ਰੇ ॥ ਤਰਹਿ ਨਾਰਦਾਦਿ ਸਨਕਾਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਹਿ ਤਰਹਿ, ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਲਗਿ ਤਜਹੁ ਰਸ ਅੰਨ ਰੇ ॥

Fun ṯarėh ṯe sanṯ hiṯ bẖagaṯ gur gur karahi ṯari▫o parahlāḏ gur milaṯ mun jann re.  Ŧarėh nārḏāḏ sankāḏ har gurmukẖėh ṯarėh ik nām lag ṯajahu ras ann re.

 

(Phun-i) also (tey) those (sant = saints) seekers who (hit) lovingly (karah-i) adopt/obey (gur-u) the great (gur-u) guru (tarah-i = swim) are saved – and find God; and devotees like Prahlad (tario) were saved on (milat) meeting and obeying the guru, as do (ja’nn) humble (mun-i) sages.

Sages (naardaad-i) like Narada and (sankaad-i) Sanak – and his brothers Sanadan, Sanat Kumar and Sanatan – (tarah-i) are saved; (lag-i) by engaging in practice of Naam/ virtues and commands of (ik) the One Almighty; you also (tajah-u) give up (a’nn) other (ras = tastes) pursuits – like rituals, superstitions and worships and practice Naam.

 

ਦਾਸੁ ਬੇਨਤਿ ਕਹੈ, ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਪੁ ਮੰਨ ਰੇ ॥੪॥੧੬॥੨੯॥

Ḏās benaṯ kahai nām gurmukẖ lahai gurū gur gurū gur gurū jap man re. ||4||16||29||

 

(Daas-u = servant) this humble bard (kahai) makes this (beynat-i) submission; one should (lahai) receive awareness of Naam (gurmukh-i) from the guru; (rey) o human being, (jap-u) remember and (ma’nn) obey (gur-u) the great guru – thrice – to keep God in mind in thought word and deed. 4. 16. 29.
