they are as (mithia= false) useless (jio) as (seegaar) adornment of (mirtak) a dead body – i.e. is only for display. 2.

Ėk nimakẖ jo simran mėh jī▫ā Kot ḏinas lākẖ saḏā thir thī▫ā ||1|| rahā▫o

One (jo) who (jeeaa) lives (mah-i) in, i.e. has experience of complying with Divine commands, (eyk nimakh) a bit.

S/he loves it so much as to (thee = becomes, thir-u = stable) live in that state (kott-i) crores and lakhs of (dinas) days, i.e. forever. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell here and reflect.

Bin simran ḏẖarig karam karās Kāg baṯan bistā mėh vās ||2||

(Karam) deeds (karaas) done (bin) without (simran) remembrance i.e. actions without the Almighty in mind are (dhrig-u) disgraceful/unbecoming. Like (kaag) the crow which (vaas = keeps) puts its (batan) beak (mah-i) in (vista = excrement) filth. 2.

Bin simran bẖa▫e kūkar kām Sākaṯ besu▫ā pūṯ ninām ||3||

Without having the Creator in mind one’s (kaam) actions (bhaey) become like those of dogs, which are characterized by greed, i.e. meeting physical needs.
Similarly (saakat) a person who looks at others than the One Creator, is like a (beysuaa) prostitute’s (poot) son who (ninaam = without a name) does not know who his father is. 5.

Bin simran jaise sīń cẖẖaṯārā Bolėh kūr sākaṯ mukẖ kārā ||4||

A person without the Creator in mind is like a (seengn) horned (chhataara) ram, which tries to hurt/fight with others;
Similarly (saakat) the person who does not have the Creator in mind (boleh) speaks (koor) untruths and has his/her (mukh) face (kaara) blackened i.e. faces disgrace. 4.

Bin simran garḏẖabẖ kī ni▫ā▫ī Sākaṯ thān bẖarisat firā▫ī ||5||

Without the Master in mind one is (ki niaaee) like (gardgab) a donkey which, after it is given a bath, rolls in dust, i.e. is thoughtless.
Similarly (saakat = worshipper of Shakti) a self-willed person – being unaware of Naam – (phiraahi) wanders in (bharistt) evil (thaan) places, i.e. lives by vices. 5.

Bin simran kūkar harkā▫i▫ā Sākaṯ lobẖī banḏẖ na pā▫i▫ā ||6||

A person who does not have the Almighty in mind behaves like a (harkaaia) rabid (kookar) dog, which runs unchecked, and bites.
Similarly, a saakat/person ignorant of Naam (lobhi) cares only for physical needs and does not (bandh paaia) have control on his/her mind. 6.

Bin simran hai āṯam gẖāṯī Sākaṯ nīcẖ ṯis kul nahī jāṯī ||7||

A person who is not conscious of the Creator as the protector has (aatam ghaati) suicidal tendencies.
Saakat/one ignorant of Naam has (neech = low) unbecoming tendencies not (jaati = knowing) conscious of (tis) his/her (kul) lineage/responsibilities. 7.

Note: The above verses contain references to many life forms in animals. This shows that those who do not remember and live by Divine virtues and commands behave like animals in life and reincarnate in these forms on death. Those who remember the Almighty earn Divine grace and get across the world-ocean of vices. They ultimately unite with the Creator. The next and last verse brings this out.

Jis bẖa▫i▫ā kirpāl ṯis saṯsang milā▫i▫ā Kaho Nānak gur jagaṯ ṯarā▫i▫ā ||8||7||

One on whom the Creator (bhaiaa) is (kirpal-u) gracious, (tis) that person (milaaia = meets) (satsang-i) joins holy congregation where Divine virtues and commands are learnt.
(Gur-i) the guru’s teachings, (taraaia) ferry (jagat = world) the world creatures across the world-ocean i.e. they overcome vices and unite with the Creator. 8. 7.
