SGGS pp 272-274

 

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਪੇਖੈ ਏਕਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਲਛਣ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
Salok. Man sācẖā mukẖ sācẖā so▫e. Avar na pekẖai ekas bin ko▫e. Nānak ih lacẖẖaṇ barahm gi▫ānīho▫e. ||1||

 

(Slok) prorogue. S/he is (saacha) truthful (man-i) in mind/thought and (saacha) truthful (mukh-i) by mouth/word, i.e. the same in thought and deed – not pretentious.

(Peykhai) sees (na koey) none (avar-u) other (bin-u) except (eykas-u) the One Master i.e. sees the One Creator in everyone and everything.
(Ih) these (hoey) are (lachhan) the signs of (brahm = Creator, giaani = aware) a Divine conscious person. 1.

 

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ॥ਜੈਸੇ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕਮਲ ਅਲੇਪ ॥
Asatpaḏī. Barahm gi▫ānī saḏā nirlep. Jaise jal mėh kamal alep.

 

(Asttpadi) chapter of eight stanzas. A Divine conscious person is (sadaa) ever (nirleyp) untouched by vices in the world-play.
(Jaisey) like (kamal) the lotus remains (aleyp) untouched while being (mah-i) in (jal) water.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਦੋਖ ॥ਜੈਸੇ ਸੂਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਕਉ ਸੋਖ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī saḏā nirḏokẖ. Jaise sūr sarab ka▫o sokẖ.

 

A Divine conscious person is ever (nir-dokh) without antagonism to any one i.e. sheds all jealousy and is friendly to all.
(Jaisey) like (soor) the sun (sokh = dries up) provides light and heat (sarab) to (kau) all without discrimination.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥ਜੈਸੇ ਰਾਜ ਰੰਕ ਕਉ ਲਾਗੈ ਤੁਲਿ ਪਵਾਨ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai ḏarisat samān. Jaise rāj rank ka▫o lāgai ṯul pavān.

 

Everyone is (samaan) equal (kai dristt-i = in sight of) in the eyes of a Divine conscious person.
Just as (pavaan) air (kau laagai) blows on the (raaj) king and (rank) the pauper (tu-i) equally.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਏਕ ॥ਜਿਉ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਕੋਊ ਖੋਦੈ ਕੋਊ ਚੰਦਨ ਲੇਪ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai ḏẖīraj ek. Ji▫o basuḏẖā ko▫ū kẖoḏai ko▫ū cẖanḏan lep.

 

A Divine conscious person has (eyk = one) unqualified (dheeraj) patience to everythin.
(Jaisey) like (basudha) the earth is unconcerned whether (kooo) someone (khodai) digs or (chandan leyp) covers it with sandalwood paste i.e. does not care how it is treated.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਇਹੈ ਗੁਨਾਉ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਪਾਵਕ ਕਾ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਭਾਉ ॥੧॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kā ihai gunā▫o. Nānak ji▫o pāvak kā sahj subẖā▫o. ||1||

 

(Ihai) this – naturally acting in goodness – is (gunaao) the virtue of a Divine conscious person.
(Jiau) like (paavak) fire has (sahj subhaau) unchanging (subhaau) nature – that it always provides heat – says fifth Nanak. 1.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ॥ਜੈਸੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਲਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī nirmal ṯe nirmalā. Jaise mail na lāgai jalā.

 

A Divine conscious person is (nirmala) purer (tey) than (nirmal) the purest – has no vices.
Like (mail-u) filth (na laagai) does not stick (jalaa) to water i.e. the way water sheds impurities

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥ਜੈਸੇ ਧਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਆਕਾਸੁ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai man ho▫e pargās. Jaise ḏẖar ūpar ākās.

 

(Kai man-i) the mind of a Divine conscious person (hoey pragaas) is illuminated.
Like there is (aakaas) sky (oopar-i) above (dhar) the earth – and it is lit by the sun during day and the moon at night.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai miṯar saṯar samān. Barahm gi▫ānī kai nāhī abẖimān.

 

(Kai) to a Divine conscious person (mitr-u) friend and (satr-u) foe are (samaan-i) equal.
S/he (kai naahi) does not have (abhimaan) vanity/arrogance that hurts others.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਊਚ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥ਮਨਿ ਅਪਨੈ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਨੀਚਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī ūcẖ ṯe ūcẖā. Man apnai hai sabẖ ṯe nīcẖā.

 

The conduct of a Divine conscious person is (oocha = high) more sublime (tey) than (ooch = highest) the most sublime person.
But in (apnai = own) his/her (man-i) mind considers him/her-self to be (neecha) the lower (tey) than of (sabh) all i.e. remains humble.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਭਏ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੨॥
Barahm gi▫ānī se jan bẖa▫e. Nānak jin parabẖ āp kare▫i. ||2||

 

Only (sey jan) those persons (bhaey) become a Divine conscious persons.
(Jin) whom (prabh-u) the Creator (aap-i) IT-self so (karey) makes, says fifth Nanak. 2.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਗਲ ਕੀ ਰੀਨਾ ॥ਆਤਮ ਰਸੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਚੀਨਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī sagal kī rīnā. Āṯam ras barahm gi▫ānī cẖīnā.

 

A Divine conscious person acts humbly as if s/he is (reena) the dust of the feet (ki) of (sagal) all.
Because s/he (cheena = known) experiences (aatam ras-u = inner taste) Divine presence within – and thus gives up ego.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਇਆ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਤੇ ਕਛੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਭਇਆ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kī sabẖ ūpar ma▫i▫ā. Barahm gi▫ānī ṯe kacẖẖ burā na bẖa▫i▫ā.

 

(Maiaa) kindness (ki) of a Divine conscious person is showered (oopar-i) on (sabh) all i.e. s/he is kind to all without discrimination.
(Kachh-u na) no (buraa = bad) evil (bhaia = happens) is done by a Divine conscious person.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਰਸੀ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī saḏā samaḏrasī. Barahm gi▫ānī kī ḏarisat amriṯ barsī.

 

A Divine conscious person (sadaa) ever (samdarsi = of equal sight) looks at all equally.
his/her (dristt-i) sight (barsi) showers (amrit-u = sweetness) kindness – i.e. looks at all with compassion.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī banḏẖan ṯe mukṯā. Barahm gi▫ānī kī nirmal jugṯā.

 

A Divine conscious person is (mukta) free (tey) from (bandhan) bondage to the world-play.
His/her (jugta = method) way of life is (nirmal = pure) devoid of wrongdoings.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਗਿਆਨ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੩॥

Barahm gi▫ānī kā bẖojan gi▫ān. Nānak barahm gi▫ānī kā barahm ḏẖi▫ān. ||3||

 

A Divine conscious person’s (bhojan-u) food is (giaan) spiritual awareness i.e. s/he lives by Divine virtues and commands.
A Divine conscious person’s (dhiaan-u) focus is (brahm) the Creator i.e. his/her objective is to unite with the Creator, says fifth Nanak. 3.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਏਕ ਊਪਰਿ ਆਸ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī ek ūpar ās. Barahm gi▫ānī kā nahī binās.

 

A Divine conscious person places his/her (aas) expectations only (oopar-i) on (eyk) the One Master.
That is why s/he does not face (binaas = destruction) disappointments.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਸਮਾਹਾ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਉਮਾਹਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai garībī samāhā. Barahm gi▫ānī par▫upkār omāhā.

 

(Gareebi = poverty) humility (samaaha) abides in the mind (kai) of a Divine conscious person i.e. s/he is humble in dealing with every one 
And s/he is always (omaaha) enthused to (parupkaar) do good to others.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਧੰਧਾ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਲੇ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਬੰਧਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai nāhī ḏẖanḏẖā. Barahm gi▫ānī le ḏẖāvaṯ banḏẖā.

 

A Divine conscious person does not tie him/her-self in (dhandha) entanglements of the world-play i.e. s/he overcomes attachment and temptations.
S/he (ley bandha = ties) controls (dhaavat = running) the wandering mind, i.e. conforms to Divine commands.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਭਲਾ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੁਫਲ ਫਲਾ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai ho▫e so bẖalā. Barahm gi▫ānī sufal falā.

 

(Kai) for a Divine conscious person, whatever (hoey) happens (so) that is (bhalaa) good i.e. s/he happily accepts Divine will.
And thus obtains (phalaa = fruit) reward of (suphal = good fruit)  acceptance for union with the Almighty.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਗਲ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਪੈ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੪॥

Barahm gi▫ānī sang sagal uḏẖār. Nānak barahm gi▫ānī japai sagal sansār. ||4||

 

(Sagal) all those (sang-i) in the company of a Divine conscious person obtain (udhaar-u) emancipation from vices – and get across the world ocean to the Creator.
That is why (sagal) all (sansaar-u = world) human beings (japai = conforms to) follows the Divine conscious person, says fifth Nanak. 4.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਏਕੈ ਰੰਗ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਬਸੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੰਗ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai ekai rang. Barahm gi▫ānī kai basai parabẖ sang.

 

(Kai) for a Divine conscious person there is only (eykai) the one (rang) love i.e. the Creator alone is worth loving.
(Prabh) the Creator (basai) abides (sang) with him/her, i.e. s/he is ever obeys the Creator

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai nām āḏẖār. Barahm gi▫ānī kai nām parvār.

 

For a Divine conscious person, (naam-u) Divine commands are (aadhaar-u) his/her support in life.
Naam is like his/her (parvaas-u) family, i.e. ever the mainstay..

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਦ ਜਾਗਤ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਤਿਆਗਤ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī saḏā saḏ jāgaṯ. Barahm gi▫ānī ahaʼn▫buḏẖ ṯi▫āgaṯ.

 

A brahm giani is (sadaa sad) ever (jaagat = awake) alert against vices in the world-play.
S/he (tiaagat) gives up (ahangbudh-i) ego.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai man parmānanḏ. Barahm gi▫ānī kai gẖar saḏā anand.

 

The Almighty Master of (parmanand) supreme bliss/peace ever abides (kai man-i) in the mind of a Divine conscious person.
There is therefore (sadaa = ever) eternal (anand) bliss (ghar-i = in house) in mind of a Divine conscious person.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥੫॥

Barahm gi▫ānī sukẖ sahj nivās. Nānak barahm gi▫ānī kā nahī binās. ||5||

 

Because of his/her qualities described above a Divine conscious person (nivaas = lives) remains (sukh) peace and (sahj) poise. 
S/he is not (binaas = destruction) consumed by the vices says fifth Nanak. 5.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਾ ਬੇਤਾ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਏਕ ਸੰਗਿ ਹੇਤਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī barahm kā beṯā. Barahm gi▫ānī ek sang heṯā.

 

A Divine conscious person (beyta) knows the mysteries (ka) of (brahm) the Creator.
S/he bears (heyta) love (eyk sang-i) for the One Master alone i.e. does not worship or look to anyone else.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਹੋਇ ਅਚਿੰਤ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮੰਤ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kai ho▫e acẖinṯ. Barahm gi▫ānī kā nirmal manṯ.

 

Because of reliance on the One Omnipotent Master, the mind of a Divine conscious person (hoey) becomes (achint) free from worries.

His/her (mant) intentions are ever (nirmal) pure – as s/he lives by Divine virtues and commands.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਬਡ ਪਰਤਾਪ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī jis karai parabẖ āp. Barahm gi▫ānī kā bad parṯāp.

 

Only such a person becomes a Divine conscious person (jis-u) whom (prabh-u) the Creator (aap-i) IT-self (karai) makes one, i.e. when led to the guru to learn.
A Divine conscious person has (badd) great (partaap = majesty) eminence.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਦਰਸੁ ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kā ḏaras badbẖāgī pā▫ī▫ai. Barahm gi▫ānī ka▫o bal bal jā▫ī▫ai.

 

It is (baddbhaagi) with good fortune that one (daras paaeeai= obtains sight) one meets a Divine conscious person.
One should (bal-i bal-i jaaeeai = be sacrifice) adores a Divine conscious person.

 

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਉ ਖੋਜਹਿ ਮਹੇਸੁਰ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਆਪਿ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ॥੬॥

Barahm gi▫ānī ka▫o kẖojėh mahesur. Nānak barahm gi▫ānī āp parmesur. ||6||

 

Even (maheysur) gods like Mahesh of the Hindu trinity (khojah-i) seek a Divine conscious person, because s/he knows the mysteries of the Creator.
A Divine conscious person (parmeysur) the Supreme Master (aap-i) IT-self – because s/he emulates virtues of the Creator, says fifth Nanak . 6.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈ ਸਗਲ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kī kīmaṯ nāhi. Barahm gi▫ānī kai sagal man māhi.

 

A Divine conscious person is beyond (keemat-i) evaluation by ordinary mortals.
S/he has (sagal) all virtues and understanding (maah-i) in his/her (man) mind.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਕਉਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਭੇਦੁ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਅਦੇਸੁ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kā ka▫un jānai bẖeḏ. Barahm gi▫ānī ka▫o saḏā aḏes.

 

But (kaun jaanai = who knows?) no one can know (bheyd-u) the mysteries of mind a Divine conscious person.
It is befitting to (sadaa) ever (adeys-u) pay obeisance/respect (kau) to a Divine conscious person.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਕਥਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਅਧਾਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਰੁ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਰਬ ਕਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kā kathi▫ā na jā▫e aḏẖākẖ▫yar. Barahm gi▫ānī sarab kā ṯẖākur.

 

(Na jaae-y) it is not possible to (kathia) describe even (adhaakhyar = half a word) a bit of merits of a Divine conscious person.
s/he is (thaakur-u = master) above (sarab) everyone else.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਮਿਤਿ ਕਉਨੁ ਬਖਾਨੈ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kī miṯ ka▫un bakẖānai. Barahm gi▫ānī kī gaṯ barahm gi▫ānī jānai.

 

(Kaun = who?) no one can (bakhaanai = say) give (mit-i) measure of a Divine conscious person.
Only s/he or another a Divine conscious person (jaanai) knows his/her (gat-i) state.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ ॥੭॥

Barahm gi▫ānī kā anṯ na pār. Nānak barahm gi▫ānī ka▫o saḏā namaskār. ||7||

 

There are no (ant-u = end) limits or (paar-u) boundaries to a Divine conscious person spiritual reach i.e. s/he is respected by everyone in life and receives honour in the hereafter.
I (sadaa) ever pay (namaskaar-u) obeisance to the Divine conscious person, says fifth Nanak. 7.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਭ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਾ ਕਰਤਾ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਦ ਜੀਵੈ ਨਹੀ ਮਰਤਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī sabẖ sarisat kā karṯā. Barahm gi▫ānī saḏ jīvai nahī marṯā.

 

A Divine conscious person is embodiment of (karta) the Creator (ka) of (sabh) the whole (sristt-i) universe.
s/he does not fall prey to vices and thus not (marta = die) perish in the world ocean; s/he (sad) ever remains (jeevai = alive) overcomes vices and gets across the world ocean to the Creator.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī mukaṯ jugaṯ jī▫a kā ḏāṯā. Barahm gi▫ānī pūran purakẖ biḏẖāṯā.

 

A Divine conscious person is (daata = giver) the guide to (mukt-i) freedom from vices and reincarnation; s/he teaches (jugt-i) the methods of achieving that to (jeea = creatures) others.
in that light s/he is (pooran purakh-u) a perfect being and embodiment (bidhaata) the Creator.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਅਨਾਥ ਕਾ ਨਾਥੁ ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਹਾਥੁ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī anāth kā nāth. Barahm gi▫ānī kā sabẖ ūpar hāth.

 

A Divine conscious person is (naath-u) master (ka) of (anaath = master-less, orphan) hapless persons i.e. is the support of the needy;
his/her (haath = hand) blessings are (oopar-i) on (sabh) all.

 

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਸਗਲ ਅਕਾਰੁ॥ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
Barahm gi▫ānī kā sagal akār. Barahm gi▫ānī āp nirankār.

 

(Sagal) all (akaar-u) visible existence is of a Divine conscious person i.e. s/he treats every one as his/her own.
and is thus like (nirankaar-u) the formless Creator (aap-i) IT-self.

(Sobha = praise) eulogy of a Divine conscious person (bani) befits only a Divine conscious person not any ordinary mortal.

Note: This seventh Asttpadee is on the subject of ਸਾਧ (saadh) meaning a seeker, devotee or a holy person who has controlled his/her mind and conforms to Divine commands/laws of nature.

 

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਹੈ ਸੁ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਸੁਨਿ ਮੀਤਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਿਨਵੰਤਾ ॥

ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਅਚਰਜ ਕਥਾ ॥੧॥
Salok. Agam agāḏẖ pārbarahm so▫e. Jo jo kahai so mukṯā ho▫e. Sun mīṯā Nānak binvanṯā. Sāḏẖ janā kī acẖraj kathā. ||1||

 

(Salok) prologue. (Prbrahm-u) the Supreme Being is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension, and (agaadh-i) unfathomable. (Jo jo) everyone who (kahai = says) praises and emulates IT’s virtues, (so) such a person (hoey) is (mukta) freed – from temptations, bondage to rituals as well as attachment to relatives or wealth in life, and from cycles of births and deaths.
(Binvanta) submits fifth Nanak: (Meeta) my friends, (sun-i) listen to (acharaj = wondrous) the fascinating (kathaa = description) discourse of (saadh janaa) the saints – to understand this. 1.

 

Note: The starting verse of this Asttpadee uses the expression ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਹੋਤ (mukh oojal hot) meaning face is clean. It refers to one who is free of faults.

 

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਹੋਤ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਲੁ ਸਗਲੀ ਖੋਤ ॥
Asatpaḏī. Sāḏẖ kai sang mukẖ ūjal hoṯ. Sāḏẖsang mal saglī kẖoṯ.

 

(Asttpadee) composition of eight stanzas. (Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one’s (mukh) face (hot) becomes (oojal) clean, i.e. is freed of vices.

(Sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, (mal-u = the one filth) the vice of ego is (sagli) totally (khot = lost) dissolved and one acts by Naam/Divine commands.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੈ ਸੁਗਿਆਨੁ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang mitai abẖimān. Sāḏẖ kai sang pargatai sugi▫ān.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one’s (abhimaan-u) vanity (mittai = erased) is effaced.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, (sugiaan-u) good knowledge (pragttai) manifests, i.e. becomes aware of Divine virtues and commands.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨੇਰਾ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਸਭੁ ਹੋਤ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang bujẖai parabẖ nerā. Sāḏẖsang sabẖ hoṯ niberā.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (bujhai = understands) perceives (prabh-u) the Master (neyra = near) with one everywhere, and does not transgress.

(Sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, (sabh) all conflicts (hot nibeyra) are settled, i.e. all wrongdoings end.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਏਕ ਊਪਰਿ ਜਤਨੁ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang pā▫e nām raṯan. Sāḏẖ kai sang ek ūpar jaṯan.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (paaey) obtains (ratan-u = jewel) the wealth of awareness of (naam) discovers Divine virtues and commands.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one’s (jatan-u) effort is focused (oopar-i) on conformance to commands of (eyk) the One Creator.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਬਰਨੈ ਕਉਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥੧॥
Sāḏẖ kī mahimā barnai ka▫un parānī. Nānak sāḏẖ kī sobẖā parabẖ māhi samānī. ||1||

 

(Kaun-u = who?) no (praani) mortal can (barnai) describe the (mahima = praise) virtues of the (saadh) the saint. 
(Sobha = praise) virtues of the devotee are (samaani) contained (maah-i) in – i.e. similar to – the virtues of (prabh) the Master, which are indescribable, says fifth Nanak. 1.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਫੁਲੈ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang agocẖar milai. Sāḏẖ kai sang saḏā parfulai.

 

The Creator who is (agochar) not perceived by the sensory organs but can be found within the mind (kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, (parphulai) blossoms by remaining absorbed in the virtues of the Creator, like the lotus in water.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਬਸਿ ਪੰਚਾ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਭੁੰਚਾ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang āvahi bas pancẖā. Sāḏẖsang amriṯ ras bẖuncẖā.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, (pancha = five) the five vices – of lust, wrath, greed, attachment to things transitory and vanity – (aavah-i basi = come under control) are overcome.

(Sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (bhuncha) drinks (amrit) the life-giving (ras-u) elixir, i.e. experiences the Divine within. 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਭ ਕੀ ਰੇਨ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨੋਹਰ ਬੈਨ ॥
Sāḏẖsang ho▫e sabẖ kī ren. Sāḏẖ kai sang manohar bain.

 

(Sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (hoey) becomes (reyn) the dust of the feet of all i.e. becomes humble.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint one’s (bain) speech becomes (manohar = attractive) sweet i.e. one learns to be friendly to all.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅਸਥਿਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang na kaṯahūʼn ḏẖāvai. Sāḏẖsang asthiṯ man pāvai.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, One, having found Divine virtues within, in the company of the seekers, does not (dhaavai) run (katahu) anywhere i.e. looks to none else than the Creator.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint (paavai) obtains (asthit-i) a stable (man-u) mind – has peace of mind.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ॥੨॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang mā▫i▫ā ṯe bẖinn. Sāḏẖsang Nānak parabẖ suparsan. ||2||

 

(Kai sang-i) in the company of (saadh) devotees one is (bhi’nn = different) not lured by (maaiaa) temptations in the world-play.

(Sang-i) in the company of (saadh) devotees – one is free of vices one is at peace and – (prabh) the Almighty is (suprasa’nn) well pleased, says Nanak. 2.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਸਮਨ ਸਭਿ ਮੀਤ ॥ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਹਾ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥
Sāḏẖsang ḏusman sabẖ mīṯ. Sāḏẖū kai sang mahā punīṯ.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one banishes evil from within and (sabh-i) all those (dusman = enemies) adversaries are seen as (meet) friends.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadhoo) a saint, (sang-i) company (maha = greatly, puneet = purified) truly pure in thoughts, speech and deeds.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਕਿਸ ਸਿਉ ਨਹੀ ਬੈਰੁ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਬੀਗਾ ਪੈਰੁ ॥
Sāḏẖsang kis si▫o nahī bair. Sāḏẖ kai sang na bīgā pair.

 

(Sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one bear (nahi) no (bair-u) enmity (kis siau) to anyone.

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one does not put (pair-u) foot (beega) on the wrong path i.e. does not transgress.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਮੰਦਾ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang nāhī ko manḏā. Sāḏẖsang jāne parmānanḏā.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one sees (naahi ko) no one as (manda) bad, i.e. gives up negativity.
(Sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (jaanai = knows) experiences (parmanada) supreme bliss.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਉ ਤਾਪੁ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਜੈ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੁ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang nāhī ha▫o ṯāp. Sāḏẖ kai sang ṯajai sabẖ āp.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one does not have (taap-u) the affliction of (hau = I, mine) ego, i.e. does not act by self-will but obeys Divine commands.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (tajai) gives up (aap) self-importance (sabh-u) totally.

 

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਨੈ ਸਾਧ ਬਡਾਈ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥੩॥
Āpe jānai sāḏẖ badā▫ī. Nānak sāḏẖ parabẖū ban ā▫ī. ||3||

 

The Almighty (aapey = itself) alone (jaanai) knows (baddaaee = greatness) merits of (saadh) a saint.

Says Nanak: (Saadh) the saint (ban-i aaee) gets along with, i.e. conforms to commands of (prabhoo) the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 3.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang na kabhū ḏẖāvai. Sāḏẖ kai sang saḏā sukẖ pāvai.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one focuses on the One Creator and the mind (na kabahoo) never (dhaavai = runs) wanders/strays to other ideas.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one – conforms to Naam/Divine virtues and commands, and – (sadaa) ever (paavai) experiences (sukh-u) peace of mind.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਬਸਤੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਲਹੈ ॥ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਜਰੁ ਸਹੈ ॥
Sāḏẖsang basaṯ agocẖar lahai. Sāḏẖū kai sang ajar sahai.

 

(Saadh sang-i) with company/guidance of a saint, one (lahai) obtains (basat-u = thing, agochar = a thing not perceived by the senses) awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, in their company one can (jarai) bear (ajar-u) the unbearable i.e. not act by ego.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਸੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਊਚੈ ॥ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਪਹੂਚੈ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang basai thān ūcẖai. Sāḏẖū kai sang mahal pahūcẖai.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (basai) abides at a (oochai) high (thaan-i) place i.e. attains the exalted state of freedom from temptations.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (pahuchai) reaches (mahal-i = mansion of) the Creator’s abode i.e. achieves union with the Creator.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੈ ਸਭਿ ਧਰਮ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਕੇਵਲ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang ḏariṛai sabẖ ḏẖaram. Sāḏẖ kai sang keval pārbarahm.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (drirrai) has firm commitment to (sabh-i) all his/her (dharam) all his/her duties i.e. faithfully lives by Divine commands.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one obeys (paarbrahm) the Supreme Being (keyval) alone.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ॥੪॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang pā▫e nām niḏẖān. Nānak sāḏẖū kai kurbān. ||4||

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (paaee) obtains (nidhaan) the treasure of awareness of (naam) Divine virtues and commands.
I (kurbaan = am sacrifice, kai = to) adore (saadhoo) the saint. 4.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਭ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰੈ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਜਨ ਮੀਤ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang sabẖ kul uḏẖārai. Sāḏẖsang sājan mīṯ kutamb nisṯārai.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (udhaarai) saves, i.e. brings good name to (sabh) the total lineage/ancestors.

 (Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (nistaarai = ferries) saves (saajan) companions, (meet) friends and (kuttamb) the family from vices.

 

ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਵਰਸਾਵੈ ॥
Sāḏẖū kai sang so ḏẖan pāvai. Jis ḏẖan ṯe sabẖ ko varsāvai.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (paavai) receives (so) that (dhan-u) wealth – the wealth of awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands.

(Jis-u tey) by which (dhan) wealth (sabh ko) everyone (varsaavai) benefits i.e. those in the company of a devotee also conform to Naam.

 

Note: ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ (Dharam Rai) is the metaphorical judge the Divine court. He examines deeds of the creatures. He respectfully sends those who conform to Naam, to the Almighty, while detains those who do not. This is the context of the verse below.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਸੇਵਾ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਸੁਰਦੇਵਾ ॥
Sāḏẖsang ḏẖaram rā▫e kare sevā. Sāḏẖ kai sang sobẖā surḏevā.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, Dharam Rai the metaphoric Divine court judge (karey seyva = serves) shows respect.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one gets (sobha) glory of (surdeyva) the gods.

 

ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਪ ਪਲਾਇਨ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇਨ ॥
Sāḏẖū kai sang pāp palā▫in. Sāḏẖsang amriṯ gun gā▫in.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, (paap = sins) wrongdoings (palaain) are kept away.
Because one (gaain = sings) praises and emulates (amrit) the life giving (gun) virtues of the Creator.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਥਾਨ ਗੰਮਿ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਫਲ ਜਨੰਮ ॥੫॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang sarab thān gamm. Nānak sāḏẖ kai sang safal jannam. ||5||

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one’s (ga’mm-i = going) reach extends to (sarab) all (thaan) places i.e. no obstacles are faced in life, or for union with the Creator.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one’s (ja’nnam = birth) human birth (saphal) fruitful, i.e. one obeys Naam and attains union with the Creator, says fifth Nanak. 5.

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਘਾਲ ॥ਦਰਸਨੁ ਭੇਟਤ ਹੋਤ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang nahī kacẖẖ gẖāl. Ḏarsan bẖetaṯ hoṯ nihāl.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one does not have to make (kachh-u) any (ghaal = toil) efforts for achieving union with the Creator i.e. one does not have to observe superstitions or perform austerities.
One (hot) is (niahaal = happy) successful (bheyttat = finding) by seeing/following (darsan = sight) example of the saint.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਲੂਖਤ ਹਰੈ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਰਕ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang kalūkẖaṯ harai. Sāḏẖ kai sang narak parharai.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, (harai) keeps away from (kalookhat = black stain) wrongdoings – which are impediments to union with the Creator.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, (paharai) obviates (narak = hell) denial of union with the Creator, and being put in cycles of births and deaths.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਬਿਛੁਰਤ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਾ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang īhā ūhā suhelā. Sāḏẖsang bicẖẖuraṯ har melā.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one – leads a virtuous life and – remains (suheyla = comfortable) happy (eeha = here) in this world and (ooha) in the hereafter.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (bichhrat) separated from (har-i) the Creator for numerous births, (meyla) unites with the Creator.

 

ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
Jo icẖẖai so▫ī fal pāvai. Sāḏẖ kai sang na birthā jāvai.

 

One (paavai) obtains (phal-u = fruit) fulfilment of (soee) that (jo) which one (ichhai) wishes.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one’s human birth does not (jaavai) go (birtha) in vain, i.e. one attains union with the Creator.

 

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਾਧ ਰਿਦ ਬਸੈ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਉਧਰੈ ਸਾਧ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਸੈ ॥੬॥
Pārbarahm sāḏẖ riḏ basai. Nānak uḏẖrai sāḏẖ sun rasai. ||6||

 

(Paarbrahm-u) the Supreme Being (basai) abides in (rid) the mind of (saadh) the saint
One (rasai) enjoys (sun-i) listening to the saints and by their guidance (udhrai) is saved – from vices and from being born again – says Nanak. 6.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੁਨਉ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਉ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang sun▫o har nā▫o. Sāḏẖsang har ke gun gā▫o.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, I (sunau) listen to and understand (har-i naau) Divine virtues and commands.
(Saadhsang-i) with company/guidance of a saint, I (gaau = sing) praise and emulate (gun) virtues (key) of (har-i) the Almighty

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਬਿਸਰੈ ॥ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਨਿਸਤਰੈ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang na man ṯe bisrai. Sāḏẖsang sarpar nisṯarai.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, the Almighty is not (bisrai) forgotten (tey) from (man) the mind.
One is (sarpar) sure (nistarai = swim) to get across the world ocean i.e. overcome vices which act as impediments to union with the Creator, (sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਗੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang lagai parabẖ mīṯẖā. Sāḏẖū kai sang gẖat gẖat dīṯẖā.

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (lagai) finds (prabh) the Creator (meetha = sweet) lovable i.e. is happy to live by Divine virtues and commands.
(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadhoo) a saint, one sees the One Creator (ghatt-i ghatt-i) in every body/mind.

 

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਭਏ ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ॥ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਗਤਿ ਭਈ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
Sāḏẖsang bẖa▫e āgi▫ākārī. Sāḏẖsang gaṯ bẖa▫ī hamārī.

 

(Sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, one (bhaey) becomes (aagiaakaari) obedient i.e. lives by Divine commands as done by the seekers.
(Sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, (hamaari = our) we are (gat-i = freedom, bhaee = happens) we are freed from vices in life, and from rebirth after death.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਟੇ ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੰਜੋਗ ॥੭॥
Sāḏẖ kai sang mite sabẖ rog. Nānak sāḏẖ bẖete sanjog. ||7||

 

(Kai sang-i) with company/guidance of (saadh) a saint, (sabh) all (rog) afflictions (mittey = effaced) go i.e. one gets rid of the vices that impede union with the Creator.
It is by (sanjog = ordained association) good fortune that one (bheyttey) finds/follows (saadh) a saint, says fifth Nanak. 7.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਬੇਦ ਨ ਜਾਨਹਿ ॥ਜੇਤਾ ਸੁਨਹਿ ਤੇਤਾ ਬਖਿਆਨਹਿ ॥
Sāḏẖ kī mahimā beḏ na jānėh. Jeṯā sunėh ṯeṯā bakẖi▫ānėh

 

(Beyd = knowledge) learned persons do not (jaanah) know (mahima) merits of (saadh) a saint.
They (vakhiaanah-i) say (teyta) that much (jeyta = that much) what they (sunah-i) hear.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਤਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਰਹੀ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
Sāḏẖ kī upmā ṯihu guṇ ṯe ḏūr. Sāḏẖ kī upmā rahī bẖarpūr.

 

The (upma) characteristics of (saadh) a saint are (door-i) beyond (tih-u gun) the three modes of ego action – namely Tamas, Rajas and Sattva.

(Upma) glory of a saint (rahi bharpoor-i) pervades everywhere i.e. people everywhere praise a devotee.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਤ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਸਦਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ॥
Sāḏẖ kī sobẖā kā nāhī anṯ. Sāḏẖ kī sobẖā saḏā be▫anṯ.

 

There is no (ant) end to the (sobha) merits of (saadh) a saint.
(Sobha) merits of (saadh) a saint is (beyant = without limit) cannot be fully stated.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਊਚ ਤੇ ਊਚੀ ॥ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਮੂਚ ਤੇ ਮੂਚੀ ॥
Sāḏẖ kī sobẖā ūcẖ ṯe ūcẖī. Sāḏẖ kī sobẖā mūcẖ ṯe mūcẖī.

 

The (sobha = praise) glory of a saint (oochi) higher (tey) that of (ooch) the highest.
Glory of the saint (mooch = bigger) greater than (mooch) the greatest.

 

ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਸਾਧ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥੮॥੭॥
Sāḏẖ kī sobẖā sāḏẖ ban ā▫ī. Nānak sāḏẖ parabẖ bẖeḏ na bẖā▫ī. ||8||7||

 

The (sobha) merits of the saint (ban-i aaee) befit only the saint.
O (bhaaee = brothers) people, there is no (bheyd-u = distinction) difference between (saadh) the saint and (prabh) the Creator, says fifth Nanak. 8. 7.
