Does Gurbani Prohibit Eating Meat?

Different people have different views on whether consumption of meat by a Sikh is allowed. Some feel it is prohibited while others feel there is no prohibition. Let us make an effort to understand what Gurbani says. Those who think meat is not to be taken by a Sikh quote the following:

เจœเจ‰ เจธเจญ เจฎเจนเจฟ เจเจ•เฉ เจ–เฉเจฆเจพเจ‡ เจ•เจนเจค เจนเจ‰ เจคเจ‰ เจ•เจฟเจ‰ เจฎเฉเจฐเจ—เฉ€ เจฎเจพเจฐเฉˆ เฅฅเฉงเฅฅ เจ• เฉงเฉฉเฉซเฉฆ

When the One God resides in all why do you kill the birds (SGGS, p 1350)?

The immediate reaction on reading the hymn will be that Bhagat Kabir Ji is dissuading people from eating meat. Firstly there is only mention of killing and not eating; Secondly he mentions God being present in all including the bird being killed so there must be a context to this Shabad. The context is clear when we read further:

เจชเจ•เจฐเจฟ เจœเฉ€เจ‰ เจ†เจจเจฟเจ† เจฆเฉ‡เจน เจฌเจฟเจจเจพเจธเฉ€ เจฎเจพเจŸเฉ€ เจ•เจ‰ เจฌเจฟเจธเจฎเจฟเจฒเจฟ เจ•เฉ€เจ† เฅฅ เจœเฉ‹เจคเจฟ เจธเจฐเฉ‚เจช เจ…เจจเจพเจนเจค เจฒเจพเจ—เฉ€ เจ•เจนเฉ เจนเจฒเจพเจฒเฉ เจ•เจฟเจ† เจ•เฉ€เจ† เฅฅเฉจเฅฅ

You catch the living creature and kill the body as sacrifice to God; But Godโ€™s light in the creature is indestructible; so what do you sacrifice?

It is therefore clear that the context is sacrifice of creature to propitiate God or any other deity. Hence Kabir Ji is dissuading people from sacrifices. Bhagat Kabir also says in a Slok (Couplet):

เจ•เจฌเฉ€เจฐ เจญเจพเจ‚เจ— เจฎเจพเจ›เฉเจฒเฉ€ เจธเฉเจฐเจพ เจชเจพเจจเจฟ เจœเฉ‹ เจœเฉ‹ เจชเฉเจฐเจพเจจเฉ€ เจ–เจพเจ‚เจนเจฟ เฅฅ เจคเฉ€เจฐเจฅ เจฌเจฐเจค เจจเฉ‡เจฎ เจ•เฉ€เจ เจคเฉ‡ เจธเจญเฉˆ เจฐเจธเจพเจคเจฒเจฟ เจœเจพเจ‚เจนเจฟ เฅฅเฉจเฉฉเฉฉเฅฅ

Whosoever takes Marijuana, fish and alcoholic drinks; all his pilgrimages, fasts and performance of religious practices shall go waste (SGGS, p 1377).

Here Kabir Ji is dissuading people from taking intoxicants and non-vegetarian food.

This is a stand alone Slok and its context needs to be found from what Kabir Ji says elsewhere. He says:

เจธเฉเจ†เจฆ เจฒเฉเจญเจค เจ‡เฉฐเจฆเฉเจฐเฉ€ เจฐเจธ เจชเฉเจฐเฉ‡เจฐเจฟเจ“ เจฎเจฆ เจฐเจธ เจฒเฉˆเจค เจฌเจฟเจ•เจพเจฐเจฟเจ“ เจฐเฉ‡ เฅฅ เจ•เจฐเจฎ เจญเจพเจ— เจธเฉฐเจคเจจ เจธเฉฐเจ—เจพเจจเฉ‡ เจ•เจพเจธเจŸ เจฒเฉ‹เจน เจ‰เจงเจพเจฐเจฟเจ“ เจฐเฉ‡ เฅฅเฉฉเฅฅ

Under the influence of taste and pleasures of sensory organs, one indulges in intoxicants and tasty food that take one to vices (SGGS, p 335).

It is well known that indulgence in fish etc and intoxicants leads to vices like violence and lust satisfaction outside marriage or even overindulgence with the spouse. If we read this with the above Slok it appears that Kabir ji is asking people to understand that indulgence like this will negate all your religious practices.

Further we find that in the SGGS there are specific instructions to avoid intoxicants. The third Guru says

เจฎเจพเจฃเจธเฉ เจญเจฐเจฟเจ† เจ†เจฃเจฟเจ† เจฎเจพเจฃเจธเฉ เจญเจฐเจฟเจ† เจ†เจ‡ เฅฅ เจœเจฟเจคเฉ เจชเฉ€เจคเฉˆ เจฎเจคเจฟ เจฆเฉ‚เจฐเจฟ เจนเฉ‹เจ‡ เจฌเจฐเจฒเฉ เจชเจตเฉˆ เจตเจฟเจšเจฟ เจ†เจ‡ เฅฅ เจ†เจชเจฃเจพ เจชเจฐเจพเจ‡เจ† เจจ เจชเจ›เจพเจฃเจˆ เจ–เจธเจฎเจนเฉ เจงเจ•เฉ‡ เจ–เจพเจ‡ เฅฅ เจœเจฟเจคเฉ เจชเฉ€เจคเฉˆ เจ–เจธเจฎเฉ เจตเจฟเจธเจฐเฉˆ เจฆเจฐเจ—เจน เจฎเจฟเจฒเฉˆ เจธเจœเจพเจ‡ เฅฅ เจเฉ‚เจ เจพ เจฎเจฆเฉ เจฎเฉ‚เจฒเจฟ เจจ เจชเฉ€เจšเจˆ เจœเฉ‡ เจ•เจพ เจชเจพเจฐเจฟ เจตเจธเจพเจ‡ เฅฅ

One person (like the bartender) brings the intoxicant, another takes a cup from it; by drinking it he loses his power to think and acts as if mad; he is unable to distinguish the good from bad and is pushed away from the Master; by drinking it the Master is forgotten and one is punished in His court, Do not take such a drink if it is within your power. (SGGS, p 554).

There is therefore specific injunction against intoxicants, but it is not so for non-vegetarian food. For example Guru Nanak says:

เจ…เจญเจพเจ–เจฟเจ† เจ•เจพ เจ•เฉเจ เจพ เจฌเจ•เจฐเจพ เจ–เจพเจฃเจพ เฅฅ เจšเจ‰เจ•เฉ‡ เจ‰เจชเจฐเจฟ เจ•เจฟเจธเฉˆ เจจ เจœเจพเจฃเจพ เฅฅ

You eat the meat of the goat killed the Muslim way but talk of piety (SGGS, p 472).

Guru Sahib is pointing out the hypocrisy of the Hindu. If he wanted to prohibit non-vegetarian food, he could have just said meat or goat and not meat dressed the Muslim way, which is also an edict in the Sikh Reht Maryada. Such meat is taboo for the Sikh.

There is thus no injunction against eating meat but also no advice to eat it. According to Guru Nanak:

เจฎเจพเจธเฉ เจฎเจพเจธเฉ เจ•เจฐเจฟ เจฎเฉ‚เจฐเจ–เฉ เจเจ—เฉœเฉ‡ เจ—เจฟเจ†เจจเฉ เจงเจฟเจ†เจจเฉ เจจเจนเฉ€ เจœเจพเจฃเฉˆ เฅฅ

The ignorant persons, instead of acquiring knowledge or meditate, fight whether to eat meat or not (SGGS, p 1289).

In other words the Guru asks the Sikhs not to make it an issue. It is to be kept in mind that we are not to take food or drink:

เจœเจฟเจคเฉ เจ–เจพเจงเฉˆ เจคเจจเฉ เจชเฉ€เฉœเฉ€เจ เจฎเจจ เจฎเจนเจฟ เจšเจฒเจนเจฟ เจตเจฟเจ•เจพเจฐ เฅฅเฉงเฅฅ เจฐเจนเจพเจ‰ เฅฅ

That is harmful for the body and causes vicious thoughts, Pause, (SGGS, p 16).

In this Slok Guru Nanak is talking of a Brahmin who asks people not to eat but himself does acts like “gaindaa maar hom jag keeay” performs Yagnas by killing animals. A point to be noted here is that there is an Aukarr (เฉ) under the last letter of Moorakh-u foolish while addressing, so it is not talking some people. Gurbani does not encourage or prohibit eating meat. A direct reference is in Aasa Di Vaar in which Guru Nanak talks of “Abhaakhiaa ka kuttha bakra khaana” eat meat of a goat killed the Muslim way while he chides those talk of piety. Sikh Raht Maryada prohibits eating Kuttha meat, not meat.

It is not persons as plural, it is a singular tense as the “kh” has an “aunkar”, which makes it a singular. Kabir ji is telling us that momentary change of thought and actions in the presence of holy and then to resort back to the same old habits is a pointless exercise. You lose what you had earned. It is fruitless exercise. The change should be permanent and progressive to have spiritual gain. Kabir ji has used the word Rasatil โ€“ meaning Hell. He has used this very strong word to emphasize his point and should not be regarded as a casual prohibition. I fully agree & reconfirm that meat is not allowed in sikhism . However if this is not understood today , it will be realized by the individual at a later date (When one is attached to bed prior to leaving this mortal coil ) . Since NAAM DAAN is blessed only on the heart of a person , who enjoys compassion & is not affected by the need of the taste of a tongue. NAAM DAAN is a rare boon to a person (one in billions ). It has more than a zillion dollar value & cannot be purchased by Mr Bill Gates or his similar level operational colleagues in the world .Gurbani confirms ,” Nahin tul raam naam veechar….Naanak gurmukh naam japey ik var “”…LOVE .

Sorry but I need answers – who are you to confirm what can or cannot be eaten, and whatever you are confirming by, what is your source? That last verse is describing us right now – fools discussing whether or not meat should be eaten. Completely pointless but since you ‘can confirm’.

Pritam kaur ji,It appears you are firmly of the belief that meat eating is prohobited for the Sikhs. You have given certain quotations mostly of Kabin Ji to prove this. However if you read the verses and Sloks of Kabir Ji they are talking of Halal. Halal means righteous and refers to what the Muslims say they do in the name of God. In other words they kill the bird or animal as offering to God. “Sabh meh ek Khdaaey kaht ho” clearly conveys that you kill the bird as balli before God for the benefit of some one, but doesn’t God live in the bird? Dharam di Kirt mentioned by you refers to earning honestly and not eating meat.As you would notice I have not tried to twist Gurbani to serve any purpose but just presented what Gurbani says.Guru Nanak Sahib mentioning Abhaakhya ka kutha bakra clearly says that Guru Sahib is pointing out eating of such meat and not meat. The Sikh Reht Maryada prohibits kutha meat. I do not think any one is entitled to repudiate that. Some people like those of the Akhand Keertani Jatha advocate against eating meat. It is Ok because Reht Maryada or Gurbani does not say Sikhs must eat meat. Guru Sahib not make this an issue but pay attention to Gyaan , Dhyaan.Guru RakhaRawel singh

What will be the plight of those who cutting the throat with a knife eat the flesh of animals?
The perverted taste of the tongue is harmful for the teeth and damages the mouth.
The one who eyes anotherโ€™s wealth or body or slanders becomes a poisonous Amphisbaena.
This snake is controlled by the Guru’s mantra but the Guru-less manmukh never listens to this glorious mantra.
The Manmukh blindly moves ahead, never realizing the approaching deep pit ahead!
(note: Amphisbaena is a mythical serpent having a head at each end of its body.)

Sadh Sangat Ji,It is really surprising how an issue ,which is crystal clear can cause such confusion.meat cannot be obtained without killing a living being which has a soul in it.Can u kill anything if you have daya in you?If daya is not there,there cannot be Dharam,because daya is dharam ka poot.so it is absolutely clear, that -"jo sabme ek khudai kehat ho, to kyon murgi mare" should not confuse any person, who has even an iota of common sense.

Anonymous Ji,The article pointed out thataccording to Gurbani people keep arguing about meat eating and leaves it at that. Gurbani nowhere says that meat is not to be eaten. If it was to be forbidden it would have said so as has been clearly said in respect of things that are considered evil.Referring to the two Gurbani quotations you have given. Dhaul Dharam daya ka poot in the 16th Pauri of Japji Sahib refers to the Hindu belief that the earth is supported by a bull -Dhaul. The verse refutes that and says that the bull is actually the Earth being held in space according to Dharam (laws) created by the compassion (Daya) of the Creator.The other verse of Bhagat Kabir ji about "Jab sabh meh ek Khudaa –" is in reference to people offering animals and birds as sacrifice to the deities or Allah for their own good. So Bhagat Ji says the same God is there in the one offering the sacrifice and the bird or animal. So why do you do it?Gurbani also says "Jeea ka aahaar jea khaana ih karay (Slok M: 2, p 955) i.e. living beings eat living beings, that is their food.This also has to do something with keeping an ecological balance because otherwise there will be shortage of food.

That message is just to those pandits of Karnal who were sucking blood of illiterate people in form of chadhaava at that time. Why would someone restrict you to kill and allow you to eat that killed thing? If killing is restricted means eating flesh is strictly prohibited. If we are Guru ke sikh, then we must have some common sense to understand the unwritten intentions behind the shabads of our holy gurus.

Is vegetables fruits don’t have life? If not thn we can eat them?why we drink water it have lakhs of bacteria which gives life To our body cells then we can drink water if it have not life. We drink milk it is not non veg? If u can prove all vegetables fruits are not life they are vegetarian then I ll agry with u.

Eating something after its life is not bad.. but killing something for the taste of tongue is a biggest fault or sin..

usually we eat fruits or vegetables when they are ripened (means completes their life) and ready fall from plants.. moreover eating fruits and vegetables don’t harm plants in any way.. in the same way drinking milk doesn’t harm the animals so it’s not bad to drink..

Meat should be our last option as a food in worst conditions..

What is the difference then between me cutting off you dogs head for my tongue to be satisfied? If I said I had to eat something and therefore I ate you, that would not be excusable as there are so many veggies options, so what excuse do you have to cut an animal, plants have been made sweet we help plants by eating them as we then spread their seeds, by eating plants we give plants life but meat we eat it only by killing other beings,

The perverted taste of the tongue is harmful for the teeth and damages the mouth.
The one who eyes anotherโ€™s wealth or body or slanders becomes a poisonous Amphisbaena.
This snake is controlled by the Guruโ€™s mantra but the Guru-less manmukh never listens to this glorious mantra.
The Manmukh blindly moves ahead, never realizing the approaching deep pit ahead!
(note: Amphisbaena is a mythical serpent having a head at each end of its body.)

The topic of meat is always one that caused so much debate. Has anyone considered that plants are living things as well? Maybe eating vegetable is more sinful? Consider that an animal has a voice, we know that it is suffering and can therefore ensure that the suffering is minimised, but plants? They could be suffering for all we ignorant humans know. Just because plants cannot express their pain we assume they are the right food? We probably give the plants a slow painful death, who is to tell? The Guru Granth Sahib has thus classfied the parties to the meat/vegetable debate as fools. Stop wasting time arguing and try and to focus energies on other aspects.

It is true that plants are also living beings. By eating fruits, vegetables and other plant produce, we can survive a very healthy and pure life. There is no necessity of killing other animals or birds just to satisfy taste buds. We can live with minimum violence possible towards other living beings. In this world there are five different kinds of living being !) one sensed 2) two sensed 3) three sensed 4) four sensed and 5) fives sensed which is humans and animals – birds. Killing five sensed living being is the greatest sin. Plants and animals have one sense so it is the minimum violence by eating vegetables.

Other living beings also feel the same pain as we do ( what goes around, comes around) so we definitely have to pay for it in future births, maybe as the same yoni which you have inflicted pain on.

In fact we do not need meat for strength or energy either. Remember the strongest living beings (animals) are vegetarians. For example Elephants, horses etc.

Please let me know how you think if someone kills you and your near dears and for the taste eat it. Every one knows that poitry has many meaning. Gurbani is writen in many dilects. There is no cleat cut answer on many things. Just like the word โ€œWaheguruโ€ One have to chose according to his/her reasoning. I have had many conversations with people aboy it no one knows. No guru said any where to simran of on word Waheguru but now days every one is saying it.

As for eating meat.I was born vegetarian then in my teen started to eat meat. In my late 20,s I stop eating meat. No one told me not to eat. The reason is.

The real question one has to ask why do one eat. Not saying meat or vegetable. In my thinking one eat to keep his/her body healthy. Food is fuel for the body. One has to find what food is good for his body.
Every one has diffrent type of body (Wa,kaf,pit) And combination of these three.
People in west grow up on meat their body is set on eating meat. We in India grow up on vegetable.
In my view one can eat any type food longs it suite him/her. Most of us are eating for the taste. I do not agree to it. I do not mean eat bad tasting food. The intention should not be on taste. To eat for the body do i have to kill life to eat because it is tasty? One can make other food more tasty then meat. If one is eating for the nourishment. Meat do not have any thing more then vegetable. So why kill for the taste.
Do we eat to live or live to eat? One book say one thing other book says other thing. We should not argue but do what his own heart says.

Great debate and I will investigate and ask GurSikhs for their thoughts an dreport back asap.
When I took amrit 5 years ago i was told by 5 piyaras meat is forbidden. I am a scientist , mathematician and engineer and always question everything. But I have gradually learned that there are things in the world that cannot be questioned even though you cannot at this stage make sense ( as you cannot completely dismiss them). Gurbani is such. you always question and challenge preachers and sants etc about what they tell you.
So far reading so much medical researches and inter-religious thoughts I cannot image how eating meat is a good thing. I did eat before and obviously don’t eat now and I am so relaxed and feel well physically and spiritually. I’ll have to research again and find it that so many places gurbani and sakhi says against killings anyone that includes animals. they have same life cycle as human. plants and vegetables have a different life cycles. so we cannot relate them as same. Thanks for letting me put across some of my thoughts. Just look at our history, our transformations, its completely amazing and unquestionable and unique. meat seems to be the only confusing issue. just think about it, if none of eat what we going to lose – so much to gain. just do it. Gurbani ( or any other religious scriptures) does not directly tell you facts , as they are from the almighty we have to taek steps to ‘learn, understand the path’.

Meat discussion is very popular in our community. Who eats meat have positive discussion about meat and who don’t eat meat have negative discussion about meat.

Let’s see what Guru Nanak’s View.

Maas Maas Kar Moorakh Jhaghrrey. Gian dhian Nahin Jaaney.

Here Guru Nanak is not saying any thing about to eat meat or not. But stress on “Gian”. Which is most important. That’s why SGGS is focusing on Parmatma Gian and Guru Sangat so that we can understand Waheguru. Once we get one with Waheguru, he will show us what is good or what is bad. We cann’t find parmatma with karm kand discussion. To understand Waheguru we have to understand love.

I wish, if love becomes our discussion then we can achive parm anand. 99.9% of us never think what we gain if we read gurbani every day or what we loose if we don’t read gurbani. Most of us never tried to find love in gurbani..

We alway think what we gain or lose if we eat meat or not eat meat. But never think about what is seva, what is simran, what is universal love. Our seva is only at gurudwara. But that is actually school where we learn seva. In real life we have to apply seva in our job, business, family, community, while driving. Same way when we are in love will all creation of God without discrimination then simran will start automatically in our action or karm. Which becomes blessings or bhag. After Waheguru’s blessing we can get param anand.

So please let’s start Guru Nanak’s sangat by reading one pauri every day from SGGS with deep understanding from teeka or translation then see our day to day live from Guru’s point of view. So that we can achive atmak sukh.

The edict not to eat Kutthaa meat is more about dignity than religion. When the Mughals came to India, one of the things they did was to enforce that meat slaughtered by the Muslims alone would be eaten and banned slaughter of animals by Jhattka. This was done so that Indians do not have the courage to kill animals because then they would have courage to stand up to them. Only the Rajputs and Sikhs opposed this and Jhattka remained a practice with the Sikhs. It was made part of Rahat Maryada. We should also remember that the Slok before Purri 16 of Aasa Di Vaar chides people for things they did to please the Muslim rulers and Kuttha Bakra khaana is included in that.

Thank you Rawel Singh ji for this post. It is indeed enlightening to read so many different comments about the meat issue as well as other thoughts. I stumbled upon your blog post when I was looking for answers as to what Guru Granth Sahib says about eating meat.
You have more or less indicated the same thoughts as I was able to gather from various sources on the net regarding this topic. I have a few thoughts:

Just to let you know, I am born as a Sikh, wear a turban, eat meat and have a couple of drinks everyday. And I love all this. Now my query is : Am I less of a human being ( maybe a Sikh too) because I do this? It sounds all crazy to me. Now I do not hurt anyone. I hardly ever lie. I am caring about other people. I love my family. I have great friends. So I say life is good.

Now to make it clear, my life is not perfect. I have faced and am still facing many challenges in my life but through my ability to manage them or let’s say ‘deal’ with them, I have become almost ‘fearless’. I enjoy a good life but at the same time I am not attached to money. I work hard to earn it in order to maintain my lifestyle but I simply do not fear losing it. I seem to have overcome such thoughts of losing money. I have also rationalized the thoughts of losing my close ones one day or suddenly. To me it seems I have become fearless. Am I therefore in a state of ‘Nirvaan’?
Whether God exists or not is not something I am sure about but for me ‘ethical’ living, humility,care for others, etc. should be very simple to understand and not require discussions of such voluminous nature, or assume religious tones. I find it very difficult to understand where is the mystery in knowing what a ‘good’ human being is? Now, if I take two drinks everyday, at home, am I less of a Sikh? Does one really think when Gurus said Sikhs should not take alcohol, it meant even 2 drinks are sacrilege? For me those 2 drinks just enhance the taste of the food I eat. What could be wrong with that? To me what the Gurus meant was excessive consumption of alcohol makes one lose their senses but to classify this thought as a total ban on alcohol consumption does not gel with me.

To me life is simple to understand. Just do good. Do not complicate life. There are some simple rules to follow that will ensure you are loved and respected by others. Once you are able to achieve that, you can become fearless while living and fearless if death does come knocking at your door.
Would love to hear what you and others on this forum think about all this.

Your moh(attachment) is for ‘taste’ of the tongue. Maybe 2 drinks don’t intoxicate you and help you relax, but nevertheless they are still altering the state of your mind.
The mind is uncontrollable and victim of 5 dhuts and vikaars in it’s most sober state…so anything you use, be it a med, drug, liquor….etc.. that can be mind altering……is NOT gurmat.

You feel you are doing the right things in your outwardly actions, and you most likely are…but you need to meditate and do simran….and then you may awaken and realise what this moh of mind actually means.

Greetings to all – I wanted to weigh into this debate but from a different point of view. First of all, I am not Sikh, but deeply admiring of the Sikh heritage, and was privileged to be invited to Gurdwara and enjoy the service of my friend’s family in the Langar. No religion in the world serves anyone who walks in their doors without question. First of all, as far as scripture, it is so poetic that is open to interpretation, and as far as the patients I have who are Sikh, most of them are non-veg and in fact unfortunately drink alcohol and some of them smoke and some of them also do drugs. So you can see, it doesn’t matter what the scriptures say, everyone has to make their own decisions. Take a step back from religion and scripture, and ponder this: meat, milk, and cheese are not good for health. Today you have such wonderful choices that are not only vegetarian but completely vegan including soy milk, coconut milk, etc. and even meat substitutes that are healthier and don’t involve cruelty. Milk involves some animal cruelty unless you have your own dairy cow and vow to take care of it for its life after it stops giving milk. Most cows are sent to slaughter after they’re done and India exports more beef than any other country. Watch the movie “forks over knives” and you can see that people are transformed with their health after going vegan.

Please make your own decisions, and do not judge others, that is the precept of many religions.

If one should eat to live, not live to eat, live for waheguru ji, according to waheguru ji. Does not matter what you eat? To produce vegetables or any food farmers start killing the day plan to produce any crops? To produce crops in Punjab start with watering the land, so much life get drowned? The the farmer plant rice, they make sure nothing live in that land, making sure water stay in land all times with poisonous spray to kill all kind of life, even before he plants rice crops once rice planted next three months they kill any kind of living life in that land and spry to kill any other life on the plants. In my opinion as farmer vegetarians kill more life than non vegetarians.

We have Our rehit from panj pyare akj ddt and other panthic groups have given meat as a bajjar kreight, Would you tell those people to disobey what was told to them by guru panj pyare in amrit sanchaar? You definatly cannot eat meat just cause you like the taste, the baises of dharam is daya, how can killing animals for eating be approved? Jarnail singh ji bhinderwalde has stated that eating meat is a bajjar kreight but if there is a war and the panth needs you to survive you may after doing paath jatka an animal, This Is a bajjar kreight we are talking about here so are you going to risk it on your tongue? Kindly have a look at the Gurbani quote. From your interpretation it would mean we should give up eating sweets, riding horses, sleeping on bed and having good houses. No, meat is like any other meal item if one likes to have it. Gurbani does not promote or prohibit its eating. The Gurbani quote says do not have only these things in mind and forget God. It is not meat but Kuttha meat which is a Bajar kuraht.

If I came over and cut off you head and then ate you would I have to suffer for the karma of that action? What is the difference then between me cutting off you dogs head for my tongue to be satisfied? If I said I had to eat something and therefore I ate you, that would not be excusable as there are so many veggies options, so what excuse do you have to cut an animal, plants have been made sweet we help plants by eating them as we then spread their seeds, by eating plants we give plants life but meat we eat it only by killing other beings,

The perverted taste of the tongue is harmful for the teeth and damages the mouth.
The one who eyes anotherโ€™s wealth or body or slanders becomes a poisonous Amphisbaena.
This snake is controlled by the Guruโ€™s mantra but the Guru-less manmukh never listens to this glorious mantra.
The Manmukh blindly moves ahead, never realizing the approaching deep pit ahead!

If one should eat to live, not live to eat, live for waheguru ji, according to waheguru ji. Does not matter what you eat? To produce vegetables or any food farmers start killing the day plan to produce any crops? To produce crops in Punjab start with watering the land, so much life get drowned? The the farmer plant rice, they make sure nothing live in that land, making sure water stay in land all times with poisonous spray to kill all kind of life, even before he plants rice crops once rice planted next three months they kill any kind of living life in that land and spry to kill any other life on the plants. In my opinion as farmer vegetarians kill more life than non vegetarians.
