Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Aasa. O my mind, (gaav-i) sing (too) thou the praises of (gaavanhaarey) the praise-worthy Master, who is (adhaarey) the support of (praan) life, (jeea) soul, (pindd) body.

(Ja ki) by whose (seyva = service) obedience, you will (paavah-i) obtain (sarab) all (sukh) comforts i.e. you will achieve all your aims and be happy by conforming to Divine commands, the laws of nature.

You shall then not (jaavah-i = go) look (pah-i) to (kaahoo) any one (avar) else (bahurr-i) again. 1.

By (nit nit) for ever (jaapeeai) remembering/emulating virtues of (anandi) the blissful (sahib) Master, (nidhaan = treasure) the source of all (gun) virtues, one experiences (sadaa = ever) eternal (anand) bliss

I (balihaari = sacrifice) adore (tis = that) the (piaarey) beloved (sant = saint) guru (jis-u) by whose (prasaad-i) grace/guidance (prabh-u) the Almighty (vaasiaa) comes to abide i.e. is remembered (man-i) by the mind. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell and reflect on this.

(sabh = all) every one (bhali bhaat-i) very   well (samaahi) remains (sahj-i) in a state of poise.

(Ja ki) whose (bakhas) grace (na koee) no one can (meyttai = erase) negate. We should (vaasaaeeai = cause to abide) remember (soee) that (saacha) Eternal Master (man-i) in the mind.

The Almighty, (ja kai) whose (grih = house) treasure-house is (pooran) filled with (sagal) all (samagri) materials i.e. the Master has provided plenty of wherewithal for all.

(Seyvak = servants) the devotees of (prabh) the Almighty have therefore no (dookh) pain or (jhooran) sorrow.

Those who (gahee = hold) seek Divine (ott) protection, (paaeeai) attain (pad-u) the state (nirbhau) fearlessness – free of apprehensions. We should (gaaeeiai = sing) praise (so = that) the Almighty, who is (nidh-i = treasure) the source of all (gun) virtues, (saas-i saas-i) with every breath i.e. at all times. 3.

I (karee) make (ardaas-i) supplication (paas-i = with) to the (poorey) perfect guru, Nanak the fifth, the seeker, (mangai) asks for (raas-i = capital) the resource of (dhan-u) the wealth of (har-i = Almighty) understanding of Divine virtues and commands – to live by. 4. 5. 99.                                                                              –

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Aasa. (Prathmey = first of all) the first thing that happened was that (dookh) pain (ka) of (tan) the body (mittia) ended i.e. I feel no physical pain; and (man) the mind (kau hoaa) got (sagal = all) total (sookh-u) peace.

This happened when the guru (kar-i kirpa) was kind to (deeno = give) make me aware of how to live by (naau/naam) Divine virtues and commands. I (bal-i bal-i = am sacrifice) adore (tis-u = that) the (satigur) true guru. 1.

O (meyrey) my brother, since the time I (paaio) found (poora) the true guru,

and placed myself (sarnaaee) in the care, i.e. followed the teachings of, (satigur) the true guru, (sabh) all (rog) afflictions/wrongdoings and hence the resultant, (sog) sorrow and (dookh) suffering have been (binaasey) banished. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell and reflect on this.

according to the guru’s teachings; and (paaey) obtain (phal = fruit) fulfilment of (sagley) everything (chintat) I think in (man) the mind.

(Agan-i) the fire – of craving and jealosy – has (bujhi) been extinguished and I (hoee) have obtained (sabh) total (saa’nt) peace.

The guru (kar-i kirpa) was kind to (keeni = make) give (daaat-i) benediction – of awareness of Naam. 2.

(Gur-i) the guru (deeno) gave (thaan-u = place) refuge to this (nithaavey = without a place) hapless person. The guru (keeno) made this (nimaaney) honourless person have (maan-u) honour.

He (kaattey) cut my (bandhan) bondage – to lures in the world-play – and (raakhey) keeps me

as (seyvak) a servant – under his care and guidance.

I (chaakhey = taste) relish (amrit) the life-giving (baani) words of the guru. 3.

One (ja kau) to whom the guru (bhaiaa) is (daiaala = compassionate) kind – to guide,

He (aaey) came (keeaa nivaas-u) to abide (maah-i) in the mother’s (udrai) womb; there was (bahut-u) much (bigaas-u) happiness (man) in the mind (kai) of (maata) the mother. 1.

(Hukam-i) with Divine command i.e. as per the law of nature, (baalak) the child (leeaa) took (janam-u) birth (dasi) after ten (maasi) months; (sog) the sorrow – of not having a child – (mittia) ended and (anand-u) happiness (theea = happened) came.

(Sakhi = companions) the congregation (gaavai) sings (gurbani) the guru’s words (anand-u) joy – thanking the Almighty. This (bhaavai) is pleasing (man-i) to the mind – figuratively – (kai) of (sahib) the Master. 2.

(Satguru = true guru) the Almighty has (divaaia = given) granted what I (chindia) wished in (man) the mind; I have (bhaey) become (achint) worry-less with (liv laaia) focus on, i.e. having faith in, (eyk) the One Almighty. 3.

(Jiau) the way (baalak) a child (karey = does) has (bah-u) great (maan) pride (oopar-i) on his/her (pitaa) father, similarly a Sikh has pride in the guru and (bolai) says as (bulaaia) motivated to say according the guru’s (bhaan-i = will) teachings i.e. I say this because Guru Nanak willed this lineage to continue.

This (baat = talk) thing is not (gujhi chhani = hidden) a secret; Guru Nanak has been (tuttha) pleased (keeni = made) to give this (daaat-i = benediction) blessing – that the guru-lineage would be long. 4. 7. 101.

One who takes (tteyk = support) relies on (an) others (bin-u) except (saachey) the Eternal, (jaanh-u) consider (so) that person (kaachaa) to lack faith. 1.

Then o (maaee) mother, (habh) every (dookh-u) suffering, (darad-u) pain and (rog-u) affliction (maidda) of mine shall (nasai = run) leave me – i.e. I shall no fall prey to temptations which cause suffering. 1.

By (jaapney) remembering IT, my (man-i) and (tan-i) body (hovai = happens) experience (ghanaa = plenty) abundant (anad-u/anand) bliss/happiness i.e. I think and act in a state of peace since wrongdoings are avoided. 1.

Binḏak gālėh suṇī sacẖe ṯis ḏẖaṇī.   Sūkẖī hūʼn sukẖ pā▫e mā▫e na kīm gaṇī. ||2||

By (suni) hearing (bindak) a bit of (gaalh-i = talk) request by (tis-u = that) the One (sachey) Eternal (dhani) Master,

I (paaey) obtain (sookhi hoo’n sukh-u = comfort of comforts) the supreme happiness – of being connected with the Almighty – o (maaey-i) mother, (keem) the value of which cannot (gani) be assessed – it is beyond measure. 2.

Naiṇ pasanḏo so▫e pekẖ musṯāk bẖa▫ī.   Mai nirguṇ merī mā▫e āp laṛ lā▫e la▫ī. ||3||

The Almighty (pasando = like) is pleasing to (nain) the eyes; I (bhaee) am (mustaak) fascinated (peykh-i) seeing IT (nain) eyes seeing IT’s manifestation in nature.

(Mai) I am (nirgun) devoid of virtues, my mother, but IT (laaey laee) has attached me (larr-i) to IT’s robe i.e. accepted me as IT’s devotee. 3.

Beḏ kaṯeb sansār habẖā hūʼn bāhrā.   Nānak kā pāṯisāhu ḏisai jāhrā. ||4||3||105||

The Almighty is (baahara) outside/beyond (habhaa hoo’n) all (beyd = Vedas) – Eastern and (kateyb) the Semitic scriptures as well as (sansaar) the world, i.e. the scriptures cannot describe IT and IT has no physical existence.

(Paatisaah-u = king) Emperor/Supreme Master of Nanak/the devotees (disai) is seen (jaahara) manifest everywhere. 4. 3. 105.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Aasa. (Laakh = hundred thousand) innumerable (bhagat) devotees (japtey) invoke You saying (peeo peeo) Beloved – with sincere love/faith.

But I am (jeeo) a person (nirgun) bereft of virtues and (bikhaee) caught in vices; (kavan) whatever (jugat-i) method it may be, please somehow, (meylaavau) unite me with You O Almighty. 1.

Ŧerī tek govinḏ gupāl ḏa▫i▫āl parabẖ.   Ŧūʼn sabẖnā ke nāth ṯerī sarisat sabẖ. ||1|| rahā▫o.

(Prabh) O Almighty, everyone has (teyri) Your (tteyk) support i.e. You have provided the wherewithal for all; You are (gupaal) the Sustainer of the world and (daiaal) compassionate.

(Too’n) You are (naath) the Master (key) of (sabhna) all and (sabh) all (sristt-i) universe is (teyri) Yours – is created by and owes allegiance to You. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell and reflect on this.

(Sant = saints) the seekers (sad) ever – remember and – (peykhah-i) see You (hajoor-i/hazoor) present (sahaaee) to help everywhere.

Those who (daas daastan = service, bhaaey = idea/mind) are lovingly dedicated, (tina) their (gaun-u = movement) being in cycles of births and deaths (mittia = erased) is obviated – their souls merge in the Creator.

Imagine (kaun-u) what will (haal-u = condition) the fate of (jinha) those who (visria) forget – to live by – (naam-u) Divine commands i.e. they would keep taking births and dying. 3.

The way (harhiaau) stray (pas-u) cattle try to get food wherever they can, (sabh) the whole (sansaar-u) world is (taisa) like that – every one trying to grab whatever is possible.

O (prabh) Almighty, please (kaatt-i) cut our (bandhan) bondage of craving for material things and (milaavh-u) unite (aap-i) with Yourself. 4. 4. 106.
