ਜੈਤਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਘਰੁ ੨         ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Jaiṯsarī mėhlā 4 gẖar 2     Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.

Composition of the fourth Guru in Raga Jaitsri, (ghar-u 2) to be sung to the second beat.  Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance.

Note: This Shabad by the fourth Guru identifies Har-i/God with Naam. The Guru emphasizes that it is by the guru-taught practice of Naam or emulating Divine virtues and obeying Divine commands that one attains peace. In other words, we should remain conscious of the Almighty – thus avoiding transgressions – and carry out our allotted role in life sincerely. This is best done with guidance of the true guru.

Note: It would be noticed that every line in this Shabad first states virtues of the Almighty and then says they are understood by finding the guru. It is, as the first says, because God is unfathomable but mysteries of the Divine can be understood by looking at the life of the true guru, who teaches, and emulates those virtues.

O human beings, (simrah-u) remember and conform to virtues and commands of (har-i har-i) the Almighty who is (agam) beyond reach/comprehension and (apaara) Infinite, i.e. has all powers beyond comprehension and is unattached to/unaffected by the world-play; (simrat) remembering to obey (jis-u) whom (hamaara) our (dukh-u) agony – of separation from IT – (mittai = erased) can end.

O (har-i har-i) Almighty, please (milavah-u) lead us to (purakh-u) the great (satigur-u) true guru, so that (miliai) by meeting (gur-i) the guru – and following his guidance and example, we live by Divine virtues and commands – and (hoee = happens) experience (sukh-u) solace. 1.

Note: We perform numerous types of rituals hoping to unite with the Creator. However these are not of help. What is needed is to recall what the Creator told the soul before birth and live by it as guide. This is practice of Naam and above any other religious practice. One should do this guided by the guru, says the fourth Guru in this Shabad.

The Almighty is (atul-u) not weighable, IT’s (tol-u) weight is (at-i) very (bhaari) great, i.e. living by Divine virtues is invaluable; may I (umaahaa = zealously) lovingly (jap-i) remember and practice virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty (gurmat-i) with the guru’s guidance. 3.
