Sārag mėhlā 5.  Amriṯ nām manėh āḏẖāro.  Jin ḏī▫ā ṯis kai kurbānai gur pūre namaskāro. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. Awareness of (amrit) the life-giving (naam-u) Naam or virtues and commands of the Almighty, is (aadhaaro) the support (manah-i) for the mind – it enables to resist temptations and obey God.

I (kurbaanai = am sacrifice) adore (tis kai = that) one who (deeaa = gives) can impart awareness of Naam; my (namaskaaro) obeisance to (poorey) the perfect (gur) guru – who imparts awareness of Naam. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Būjẖī ṯarisnā sahj suhelā kām kroḏẖ bikẖ jāro. Ā▫e na jā▫e basai ih ṯẖāhar jah āsan nirankāro. ||1||

With awareness of Naam, the fire of (trisna) desires (bujhi) is quenched, the mind remains (sahaj-i) naturally (suheyla = comfortable) at peace while (bikh-u) the poison/vices of (kaam) lust and (krodh-u) anger – as also greed, worldly attachments and vanity – are (jaaro = burnt) overcome.

The mind does not (aaey) come and (jaaey) go, i.e. remains steady at (ih) this place (jah) where (aasan-u) seat of (nirankaaro) the Formless Master is, i.e. remains focused within. 1.

Ėkai pargat ekai gupṯā ekai ḏẖunḏẖūkāro. Āḏ maḏẖ anṯ parabẖ so▫ī kaho Nānak sācẖ bīcẖāro. ||2||31||54||

(Eykai) the One is (patagatt-u) manifest- in gross form – as well as (gupta) hidden – in subtle form within – in creation and also (ddhundhookaaro = darkness) when there is no creation.

(Soi) the same One (prabh-u) Almighty was present (aad-i = in beginning) before creation came into being, is present (madh-i = middle) through existence of creation, and (ant-i) at the end when Creation ends; this is (saach-u) the true (beechaaro) thought/understanding, i.e. God is Eternal, says fifth Nanak. 2. 31. 54.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Bin parabẖ rahan na jā▫e gẖarī.  Sarab sūkẖ ṯāhū kai pūran jā kai sukẖ hai harī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. It is (na jaaey) not possible (rahan-u) to exist (bin-u) without (prabh) the Almighty even for (ghari) a short while – one falls to vices.

(Sarab) all (sookh) comforts are (pooran) complete, i.e. all aspirations are fulfilled, of one (ja kai) who has (sukh-u) peace attained by presence of (hari) God within – for then s/he does not transgress and hence does not suffer.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Mangal rūp parān jīvan ḏẖan simraṯ anaḏ gẖanā. vad samrath saḏā saḏ sange gun rasnā kavan bẖanā. ||1||

Awareness of God, (roop) the embodiment of (mangal) happiness, is (dhan) the wealth/guide of (praan jeevan) life; there is (ghanaa) abundant (anad/anand) happiness (simrat = in remembering) in being conscious of the Almighty – because then no wrong-doings are committed and no grief experienced.

The Almighty (vadd = great) is supremely (samrath-u) potent, and (sadaa sad) forever (sangey) with the creatures; (kavan) what all virtues of the Almighty can one (rasna) tongue (bhanaa = say) recount? 1.

Those (thaan) places where God is praised (pavitra) are sanctified; those who (maan) believe/obey God are (pavitra) pure as are those who (sunanan) listen and (kahanhaarey) those who say/praise God.

(Tey) those (bhavan) houses (ja mah-i) in which (tumhaarey) Your (sant = saints) devotees reside, i.e. the holy congregations, are (pavitra) pure, says fifth Nanak. 2. 32. 55.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raag Saarag. My (rasna) tongue (japti) remembers (toohi toohi = you and you) You alone all the time. (Tum hi) You alone (pripaalak) nurture the fetus in of (maat) the mother’s (garabh) womb, and (tuhi) You (ik = one) alone take care of the creature in (manddal = place of, mrit = death) the world where the creatures live and die, i.e. everything from conception by the mother, through birth and life to death is done by You. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

O God, (tumah-i) You are (khajeena = treasure) the source of wealth and (tumah-i) You are also (jareena/zar = money) the wealth; and You are (maanik) the rubies and (laala) jewels.

You, (paarjaat = a wish-fulfilling tree) the fulfiller of wishes, are (paaey) found (tey = from) with guidance of (gur) the guru; and when found, (tau) then one (bhaey) is (nihaala) happy – relieved of all troubles – says fifth Nanak. 2. 33. 56.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Jaahoo kaahoo) wherever one is – and needs help then – (apuno hi) only one who is own (aavai) comes (chit-i) to mind – to ask for help.

One (jo) who (hovat) is (cheyro) servant (ko) of (kaahoo) someone, s/he (jaavai) goes (pah-i) to (tthaakur hi) the master only – I am Your servant/devotee, and rely only on You o Almighty. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

One relates (dookh) suffering as well as (sookh = comfort) happiness (pah-i) to (apuney) one’s own; one tells (birtha = pain of mind) the state of mind to one’s own – for me it is You, o Almighty.

One has (maan-u) pride on one’s own, relies on (taana) strength of one’s own and can expect (artha) finances from the own – You are the source of all these for me, o Almighty. 1.

I (paaey) obtained (sarab) all (thok) things when I found God by following (gur) the guru; (hamaari) my (aas) wishes have been (pooran) fulfilled, says fifth Nanak. 2. 34. 57.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Jẖūṯẖo mā▫i▫ā ko maḏ mān.  Ḏẖaroh moh ḏūr kar bapure sang gopālėh jān. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Mad = intoxicant) being intoxicated with (maan-u) pride (ko) of (maaiaa) wealth is (jhoottho = false) wrong.

(Jaan-u = know) be aware of (sang-i) company (gopaalah-i = of nurturer of the world) of, i.e. you should know that you are being watched by God, so (kar-i = make, door-i = far) get rid of (dhroh) breach of trust and (moh) worldly attachments – love of family for whom you make money using unfair means; (bapurey) helpless person – you are not your master but a subject of God. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

(Raaj = rule) authority, (joban) physical beauty/strength (ar-u) as also (umrey) the rich, (meer) rulers, (malak) nobles and (khan) people of status are (mithiaa = false/perishable) not forever – these assets are not of any value when account of deeds is taken in the hereafter.

(Kaapar) good attire, (sugandh) fragrances and (chaturaaee) cleverness – all signs of ego – (mithiaa = false) have no value in the hereafter as do not (bhojan) food and (paan) drinks – they are all left here on death. 1.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Apunī iṯnī kacẖẖū na sārī.  Anik kāj anik ḏẖāvraṯā urjẖi▫o ān janjārī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. The human being does not (saari) take care of (apuni = own) the self (itni kachhoo = not this much) a bit – to try and not succumb to vices which is an impediment to being accepted for union with God.

S/he has (anik) numerous (kaaj = work) things on hand and (dhaavarta) runs in (anik) numerous directions, and gets (urjhio) involved in (aan) other (janjaari/janjaal) entanglements. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Ŧin si▫o rācẖ mācẖ hiṯ lā▫i▫o jo kām nahī gāvārī. ||1||

(Raach-i maach-i) remaining engrossed (siau) with (tin) them (gaavaari) the mindless person (laaio = develops, hit = love) gets attached to those (jo) who are not of (kaam-i) use when needed – as above. 1.

The human being says: (Hau) I am (naahi = not) nothing, (naahi kichh-u) nothing is (meyra) mine; I cannot have (hamro) my (bas-u, chaara) way as I like, i.e. I do what You cause me to do.

O (prabh) Master of fifth Nanak, i.e. of all creatures, You (karan) create the creatures and (karaavan = cause to do) engage them on tasks; please lead me (sang-i) to company of (santan = saints) Your devotees – to follow their example and and (udhaari) be saved, i.e. ferry me across the world ocean of vices to be with You. 2. 36. 59.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Mohnī mohaṯ rahai na horī.  Sāḏẖik siḏẖ sagal kī pi▫ārī ṯutai na kāhū ṯorī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Mohni = fascinating) temptations in the world-play (mohat) entice and do not (rahai) give up when (hori/horri) restrained.

They are (piaari) the beloved (ki) of, i.e. affect, (saadhik) the seekers, (sidh) accomplished saints; (sagal) all/everyone; their attraction does not (toottai = break) end by (kaahoo) someone (tori/torri) trying to break/stop them. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

This attraction is not (thori/thorri) any less for those who can recite (khatt-u) the six Shastras (rasnaagar) with the tongue, i.e. from memory, or (gavan) go on (teerath) pilgrimages.
It does not (chhori) leave (gail-i) company i.e. affecting, (ooha) those who perform (pooja) worship, apply (chakr) markings on body like Tilak, i.e. marks on forehead, observe (barat) fasts, perform (neym) laid down rituals or (tapeeaa) those practicing austerities. 1.

(Jag-u) the world, i.e. every creature, (hot = becomes, patit = fallen to vices) is falling (mah-i) in (andh) the blind (koop) well, i.e. is affected by temptations; o (santahu = saints) devotees of God, please (karahu) make (mori) my (gat-i) state (param) supreme, i.e. help me escape falling prey to temptations in the world-play.

Fifth Nanak (bhaio) has become (mukta) free from influence of temptations (peykhat = seeing, darsan-u = sight) by joining (saadhsangat-i) the holy congregation – where virtues and commands of the Almighty are recounted and learnt to practice -, (bhori) for a short while. 2. 37. 60.

Sārag mėhlā 5.  Kahā karahi re kẖāt kẖātulī.  Pavan afār ṯor cẖāmro aṯ jajrī ṯerī re mātulī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. (Kahaa) what can (khaatt-i khaattuli) the bed (karah-i) do, (rey) o mindless person, i.e. you make arrangements for comfort, but;

You are like a balloon with (tor) your (chaamro) skin (aphaar) blown/filled (pavan-i) air, i.e. you are bloated with pride; while (teyri) your (maattuli = clay/body of clay) the body is (at-i) very (jajri = weak) perishable – the end is nearing every moment. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and reflect.

Death (hario = abducts) takes away the soul (tey) from (oohi) here, i.e. from one body and (ley dhario) places (ooha = there) in another body, (jaisey) like (baasaa) the hawk (deyt = gives/does, jhaattuli = snatch with jerk) suddenly snatches (maas) meat from one place and eats elsewhere, i.e. death will suddenly come.

(Andhuley = blind) you are blinded by attachment to comforts and (bisaario) have forgotten (deyvanhaar = giver) the Almighty who provided these; you should be (jio) like (safri) a traveler who (bharai = fills, udar-u = belly) eats (bah-i) sitting at (haattuli = shop) a restaurant, i.e. does not get attached to the shop, be similarly prepared to leave. 1.

You commit (bikaar) vices for (saad = taste) pleasure, but (bikaar) vices give (jhootth) false (ras = taste) pleasure, i.e. they cause retribution with suffering; remember (baattuli) the path to (tah) there (jah) where you are (jaano) to go, is (bheer) narrow, i.e. you cannot escape scrutiny and consequences.

(Samajh-u) understand (rey) o (iaaney) unmindful person, (teyri) your (gaantthuli) bundle will (khulhai) open and the soul leave, i.e. death may come, (aaj-u = today, kaal-i = tomorrow) anytime, says fifth Nanak. 2. 38. 61.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Saarag. O (jeeo) revered (gur) guru, because (tuhaarai) of Your (sang-i) company, i.e. by leading life as guided by you, I have (jaanio) received recognition in the world.

Otherwise there are (kott-i) crores of (jodh) warriors and no (baat = state, puchheeai = asked) notice is taken (uaa ki) of them (dargah) in Divine court, (taa-n bhi) but even there I (maaniaa) would be accepted – thanks to you. 1.

(Mool = root) start (ka) of (praani) the creature is (kaheeai) is said be, i.e. is, (kavan = what) union of the drop of father’s semen and mother’s and mother’s egg, but (dristtaanio = manifests) develops to (roop) the form of (kavan = what) a human being.

It is because (jot-i = light) Spirit of the Creator (bhaee = gives, pragaas = light) gives life to (maatti = clay) the body composed of elements like clay, and it (bakhaanio = called) becomes, (dulabh) the hard-to-get valuable (deh = body) human form. 1.

I received (tey) from (tum) you, awareness there is no value of (seyv = service) worship, (jap) recitations of texts or mantras, (taapa) austerities – to find God – and (pachhaanio) known (tey) from (tum) you (tat-u) the essence – of how to be accepted for union with God.

You (dhar-i) placed (kar-u) hand (mastak-i) on my forehead, i.e. blessed/guided me, and (jeyvri = rope) my attachment to vices has (katti = cut) ended; I have become (daas) servant of (dasaaanio) servants, i.e. a humble seeker, of the Almighty, says fifth Nanak. 2. 39. 62.
