ਕਾਨੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਘਰੁ ੫   ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

kānaṛā mahalā ੫ gharu ੫   ik‐ōnkār satigur prasādi.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Kaanrra (ghar-u 5) to be sung to the fifth beat.  Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance. 1.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੂਜਹੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਿ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਲਾਗਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਗਾਧਿ ॥ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤੋ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾਧਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

prabh pūjahō nāmu arādhi. gur satigur charanī lāgi. hari pāvahu manu agādhi. jagu jītō hō hō gur kirapādhi.੧. rahāu.

 

(Poojaho) worship (prabh) the Almighty (araadh-i) by invoking (naam-u) Naam/Divine commands, (laag-i) being (charni) at feet, i.e. with guidance of (gur) the great (satigur) true guru.

(Paavhu) find (har-i) the Almighty (agaadh-i = deep – going to bottom) searching (man-u) the mind; (jeeto) conquer (jag-u) the world with (ho ho = being) with (gur) the guru’s (kirpaadh-i) kind guidance. 1.

 

ਅਨਿਕ ਪੂਜਾ ਮੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਖੋਜੀ ਸਾ ਪੂਜਾ ਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵਾਸਿ ॥ ਮਾਟੀ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਪੁਤਰੀ ਜੋਰੀ ਕਿਆ ਏਹ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਸਿ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਾਹ ਪਕਰਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਜੰਤ ਮਿਲਾਸਿ ॥੧॥

anik pūjā mai bahu bidhi khōjī sā pūjā ji hari bhāvāsi. māṭī kī ih putarī jōrī kiā ēh karam kamāsi. prabh bāh pakari jisu māragi pāvahu sō tudhu jant milāsi.੧.

 

(Mai) I (khoji = searched) tried (anik) numerous (pooja) worships of (bahu) many (bidh-i) types; (saa) that (pooja) worship is good (j-i) which (bhaavaas-i) pleases (har-i) the Almighty, i.e. which is done with motivation by God within and brings peace.

(Ih) this (putri/putli = model) human body (jori = joined) is moulded with (maatti) clay; (kiaa) what (karam) deed can it (kamaas-i) do/what can it achieve – on its own?

O (prabh) Almighty, one whose (baah) arm You (pakar-i) hold and (paavhu) put (maarag-i) on the path, i.e. guide from within, (s-u) that (jant) creature (milaas-i) is united with (tudh-u) You. 1.

 

ਅਵਰ ਓਟ ਮੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਇਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਮੈ ਆਸ ॥ ਕਿਆ ਦੀਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ ਜਉ ਸਭ ਘਟਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥

avar ōṭ mai kōi n sūjhai ik hari kī ōṭ mai ās. kiā dīnu karē aradāsi. jau sabh ghaṭi prabhū nivās.

 

I do not (soojhai = come to mind/sight) see (koey) any other (ott) refuge worth taking: I have (aas) hope (ik = one) only in (ott) refuge (ki) of (har-i) the Almighty.

(Kiaa) what (ardaas-i) supplication should this (deen) poor seeker (karey) make, (jau) when (prabhoo) the Almighty has (nivaas) abode in (sabh) all (ghatt = bodies) creatures, i.e. the Almighty knows and fulfils the yearning of the seeker.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਚਰਨਨ ਕੀ ਮਨਿ ਪਿਆਸ ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹੀਅਤੁ ਹੈ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਰਾ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਸਦ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਸ ॥੨॥੧॥੩੩॥

prabh charanan kī mani piās. jan nānak dāsu kahīatu hai tumhharā hau bali bali sad bali jās.੨.੧.੩੩.

 

I (piaas = thirst) yearn to be at (charnan) feet – in care and obedience – of (prabh) the Almighty.

I (Jan) humble fifth Nanak (hai) is/am (kaheeat-u) called (tumhraa) Your (daaas-u = servant) devotee; (hau) I (sad) ever (bal-i bal-i bal-i = sacrifice – thrice,  jaas = am) invoke You in thought, word and deed, and You take care of me, – please protect me, o Almighty. 2. 1. 33.

ਜਗਤ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਤੇਰੈ ॥ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੇਰੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਰੰਗ ਰੰਗ ਅਨੂਪੇਰੈ ॥

jagat udhāran nām pri tērai. nav nidhi nāmu nidhānu hari kērai. hari raṅg raṅg raṅg anūpērai.

 

O (pria) Beloved Almighty, conformance to (teyrai) Your Naam/virtues and commands (udhaaran) saves (jagat = world) the creatures from temptations in the world-play.

Awareness of Naam (keyrai) of (har-i) the Almighty is (nidhaan-u = treasure) the wealth equal to (nav nidh-i = nine treasures) all treasures of the world.

(Rang) the joy of living by (rang) love for (har-i) the Almighty is (rang) joy (anoopeyrai = unique) unlike any other.

 

ਕਾਹੇ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਗਨੇਰੈ ॥ ਨੈਨਹੁ ਦੇਖੁ ਸਾਧ ਦਰਸੇਰੈ ॥ ਸੋ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਲਿਲੇਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

kāhē rē man mōhi maganērai. nainahu dēkhu sādh darasērai. sō pāvai jisu likhatu lilērai.੧. rahāu.

 

(Rey) o (man = mind) human being, (kaahey) why are you (magneyrai) engrossed (moh-i) with lures to the world-play.

You should (deykh-u) see (darseyrai = sight) example of (saadh) the guru (nainhu) with the eyes – and follow it.

(So) that person (paavai) gets sight/guidance of the guru who has this (likhat-u = writing written (lileyrai = on the forehead) in destiny. 1.

 

ਸੇਵਉ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਤ ਚਰਨੇਰੈ ॥ ਬਾਂਛਉ ਧੂਰਿ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੇਰੈ ॥ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਟੇਰੈ ॥ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਮੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਮੋਰੈ ॥

sēvau sādh sant charanērai. bāñchhau dhūri pavitr karērai. aṭhasaṭhi majanu mailu kaṭērai. sāsi sāsi dhiāvahu mukhu nahī mōrai.

 

Be (charneyrai) at feet of (saadh sant) the guru and (seyvau = serve) obey his instructions; (baanchhau) seek (dhoor-i) dust of feet, – bathing with it (kareyrai) makes one (pavitr) pure i.e. submit to the guru’s teachings to be free of vices.

It (katteyrai = cuts) removes (mail-u) dirt, i.e. purifies, for which people go take (majan) dip at (atthsatth-i) sixty-eight places of pilgrimage. (Dhiaavahu) pay attention to Naam as taught by the guru, and do not (morai) turn (mukh-u) face away, i.e. never disobey.

 

ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਲਾਖ ਕਰੋਰੈ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਤਿ ਪੁਕਰੋਰੈ ॥੧॥

kichhu saṅgi n chālai lākh karōrai. prabh jī kō nāmu anti pukarōrai.੧.

 

Shed attachments to relatives and wealth etc., remember (kichh-u na) nothing of wealth of (laakh) lakhs and (karorai) crores (chaalai = goes, sang-i = with) accompanies on death; only living by Naam (ko) of (har-i) the Almighty (pukrorai) helps (ant-i) at the end – is taken as credit when account of deeds is taken. 1.

 

ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਨਿ ਏਕ ਨਿਰੰਕੇਰੈ ॥ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਭਾਉ ਦੂਜੇਰੈ ॥ ਕਵਨ ਕਹਾਂ ਹਉ ਗੁਨ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਤੇਰੈ ॥ ਬਰਨਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਉ ਏਕ ਟੁਲੇਰੈ ॥

manasā māni ēk niraṅkērai. sagal tiāgahu bhāu dūjērai. kavan kahāṃ hau gun pri tērai. barani n sākau ēk ṭulērai.

 

(Maan-i) have faith (mansa) in mind for (eyk) the One (nirankaeyrai) Formless Almighty; (tiaagahu) give up (doojeyrai) other (bhaau) ideas.

O (pria) beloved Almighty, (kavan) what all of (teyrai) Your (gun) virtues do I (kahaa-n = say) describe; I (na saak-u) cannot (baran-i) describe even (eyk) one (ttuleyrai = asset) virtue of Yours.

 

ਦਰਸਨ ਪਿਆਸ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਮੇਰੈ ॥ ਮਿਲੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜਗਤ ਗੁਰ ਕੇਰੈ ॥੨॥੧॥੩੪॥

darasan piās bahutu mani mērai. milu nānak dēv jagat gur kērai.੨.੧.੩੪.

 

I have (bahut) great (piaas = thirst) yearning (meyrai) in my (man-i) mind for You; please (mil-u) meet me o Almighty (deyv) revered guru (keyrai) of (jagat) the world, supplicates fifth Nanak. 2.1. 34.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Kaanrra. (Kaun) which is (aisi = such) that (bidhey) method, i.e. how is (darsan = sight, parsna = touch) vision of the Almighty obtained? 1

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਆਸ ਪਿਆਸ ਸਫਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਉਮਗਿ ਹੀਉ ਤਰਸਨਾ ॥੧॥

ās piās saphal mūrati umagi hīu tarasanā.੧.

 

My (heeo) mind (umag-i/umang-i) zealously (tarsna) deeply longs for vision of the Almighty, (moorat-i) the embodiment of (saphal = fructification) fulfilment of (aas) wish (piaas = thirst) yearning. 1.

 

ਦੀਨ ਲੀਨ ਪਿਆਸ ਮੀਨ ਸੰਤਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤਨਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਨ ॥ ਹੀਉ ਅਰਪਿ ਦੇਨ ॥

dīn līn piās mīn santanā hari santanā. hari santanā kī rēn. hīu arapi dēn.

 

(Santan = saints) the seekers long for company of (santna = saints) devotees of (har-i) God (deen = poor) humbly (leen) absorbed in God like (meen) the fish has (piaas) thirst for water. They seek (reyn) dust of the feet of (santna) devotees of God – to serve and follow their example; they (deyn = give) make (arap-i) offering of (heeay) heart to the devotees, i.e. keep their guidance in mind.

 

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਕਿਰਪੇਨ ॥ ਮਾਨੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਛੋਡਿਓ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਭੇਟਨਾ ॥੨॥੨॥੩੫॥

prabh bhaē hai kirapēn. mānu mōhu tiāgi chhōḍiō tau nānak hari jīu bhēṭanā.੨.੨.੩੫.

 

One (tiaag-i chhoddio) gives up (maan-u) self-importance and (moh) attachment to the world-play when (prabh) the Almighty (hai) is (kirpeyn) kind/motivates from within; (tau) then (jeeo) the revered (har-i) Almighty (bheyttna) is found, says fifth Nanak. 2. 2. 35.

ਕਾਨੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਰੰਗਾ ਰੰਗ ਰੰਗਨ ਕੇ ਰੰਗਾ ॥ ਕੀਟ ਹਸਤ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਭ ਸੰਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

kānaṛā mahalā ੫. raṅgā raṅg raṅgan kē raṅgā. kīṭ hasat pūran sabh saṅgā.੧. rahāu.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Kaanrra. (Ranga rang = variety of colours) there is great variety in the creation. (Keett) worms to (hast) the elephant are (sabh) all (pooran) present (sanga) together.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਬਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਤੀਰਥ ਸਹਿਤ ਗੰਗਾ ॥ ਜਲੁ ਹੇਵਤ ਭੂਖ ਅਰੁ ਨੰਗਾ ॥

barat nēm tīrath sahit gaṅgā. jalu hēvat bhūkh aru naṅgā.

 

People perform (barat) fasts, (neym) laid down rituals, bathing at (teerath) places of pilgrimage (sahti) including the Ganga River.

Some stand in (heyvat = ice) cold (jal-u) water (bhookh) hungry (ar-u) and (nanga) naked.

 

ਪੂਜਾਚਾਰ ਕਰਤ ਮੇਲੰਗਾ ॥ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਕਰਮ ਤਿਲਕ ਖਾਟੰਗਾ ॥ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਸੰਗਾ ॥੧॥

pūjāchār karat mēlaṅgā. chakr karam tilak khāṭaṅgā. darasanu bhēṭē binu satasaṅgā.੧.

 

Some (karat) perform (poojaachaar) acts of worship (meylanga = limbs together) sitting cross-legged, (karam = act, chakr = signs) mark chakras on the body, apply (tilak) frontal marks and perform (khaattanga = of six limbs) the six acts – doing/getting done Yagnas/fire sacrifice, teaching/learning, giving/receiving charity.

All these are efforts to (bhettey = see) obtain vision of God (bin-u) without joining (satsanga) the holy congregation, i.e. without learning to live by commands of the Creator. 1.

 

ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਤਿ ਰਹਤ ਬਿਟੰਗਾ ॥ ਹਉ ਰੋਗੁ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਚੁਕੈ ਨ ਭੰਗਾ ॥ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਜਰੰਗਾ ॥ ਸੋ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ
ਚੰਗਾ ॥੨॥੩॥੩੬॥

haṭhi nigrahi ati rahat biṭaṅgā. hau rōgu biāpai chukai n bhaṅgā. kām krōdh ati trisan jaraṅgā. sō mukatu nānak jisu satiguru chaṅgā.੨.੩.੩੬.

 

Some practice (at-i) great (hatth = determination) austerities and (nigrah-i) control of senses (rahat) remaining (bittanga = without legs) standing on head.

But with these acts one (biaapai) is afflicted by (haumai) ego, but (bhanga = breaker) faults do not (chukai) end; and one (jaranga) keeps burning in the fire of (kaam) lust, (krodh) wrath and (at-i) strong (trisan) desires.

Only (so) that person (mukat-u) is free of faults (jis-u) who finds (change = good) the perfect (satiguru) true guru to guide, says fifth Nanak. 2. 3. 36.

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Kaanrra (ghar-u 7) to be sung to the seventh beat.  Invoking the One all-pervasive Creator who may be known with the true guru’s grace/guidance. 1.

 

ਤਿਖ ਬੂਝਿ ਗਈ ਗਈ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ॥ ਪੰਚ ਭਾਗੇ ਚੋਰ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੁਖੈਨੋ ਹਰੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤੀ ਗਾਵਤੀ ਗਾਵਤੀ ਦਰਸ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

tikh būjhi gaī gaī mili sādh janā. pañch bhāgē chōr sahajē sukhainō harē gun gāvatī gāvatī gāvatī daras piāri.੧. rahāu.

 

The fire of (tikh = thirst) craving (bujh gaee) has been quenched and (gaee) gone since I (mil-i = met) found (saadh = saint, janaa = people) the holy congregation – where virtues and commands of the Almighty are recounted and learnt to practice.

(Panch) the five (chor = thieves) vices – namely lust, wrath, greed, worldly attachments, vanity – (bhaagey = run away) have been driven away (sahjey sukhaino) easily with my (piaar-i = love) longing for (daras) vision of the Almighty and (gaavti gaavti gaavti = singing – thrice) keeping in mind (gun) virtues (harey) of the Almighty in thought, word and deed.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

 

ਜੈਸੀ ਕਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੋ ਸਿਉ ਮੋ ਸਿਉ ਐਸੀ ਹਉ ਕੈਸੇ ਕਰਉ ॥ ਹੀਉ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੇ ਬਲਿ ਬਲੇ ਬਲਿ ਬਲੇ ਬਲਿ ਗਈ ॥੧॥

jaisī karī prabh mō siu mō siu aisī hau kaisē karau. hīu tumhhārē bali balē bali balē bali gaī.੧.

 

(Jaisi) what (prabh) the Almighty (karee) did (siau) to (mo) me, it cannot be done (siau) by (mo) me: (kaisey) how can (hau) I (karau) do – what God can.

(Heeau) in my heart, I (gaee = am, bal-i baley, bal-i baley, bal-i) sacrifice – thrice (tumhaarrey) to You, i.e.  I shall do anything to find You, o Master. 1

 

ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪੈ ਸੰਤ ਪਾਇ ਧਿਆਇ ਧਿਆਇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਇ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਥਾਨੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕੇਹਰੋ ਜਿਤੁ ਜੰਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

pahilē pai sant pāi dhiāi dhiāi prīti lāi. prabh thānu tērō kēharō jitu jantan kari bīchāru.

 

(Pahaley) to start with, I (pai) placed myself at (paaey) feet, i.e. took guidance, of (sant) the guru on how to (dhaiaaey dhiaaey – twice) pay attention to and (preet laaey) lovingly – obey Your directions, in order to find You.

I wonder, (keyhro) which is that (thaan-u) place (jit) where You sit and (kar-i = do, beechaar-u = consideration) watch and look after (jantan) the creatures.

 

ਅਨਿਕ ਦਾਸ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੁਹਾਰੀ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਜੋ ਭਾਵਤੋ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਰਹਿਓ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ ਏਕ ਤੂਹੀ ਤੂਹੀ ਤੂਹੀ ॥੨॥੧॥੩੭॥

anik dās kīrati karahi tuhārī. sōī miliō jō bhāvatō jan nānak ṭhākur rahiō samāi. ēk tūhī tūhī tūhī.੨.੧.੩੭.

 

(Anik) numerous (daas = servants) seekers (karah-i) do (tuhaari) Your (keerat-i = praise) glorification.

(Soee) only that person (milio) finds You (jo) who (bhaavto) is approved; s/he sees You (rahiaa samaaey) pervading everywhere, says fifth Nanak everywhere; (toohi toohi toohi) You are present in space, in water and in/on land (eyk) the One universal Master. 2. 1. 37.

ਤਿਆਗੀਐ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਮਾਨੁ ਪੇਖਤਾ ਦਇਆਲ ਲਾਲ ਹਾਂ ਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਚਰਨ ਰੇਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

tiāgīai gumānu mānu pēkhatā daiāl lāl hāṃ hāṃ man charan rēn.੧. rahāu.

 

We should (tiaageeai) give up (gumaan-u maan-u) pride – of wealth, achievements, good deeds, status and so on; (laal) the Beloved (daiaal) kind Almighty (peykhta = sees) knows what we are; (haa’n haa’n) yes, be (reyn) dust of (charan) feet, i.e. conduct yourself in humility towards all, o (man = mind) human being. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell this and contemplate.

 

ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਮੰਤ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ॥੧॥

hari sant mant gupāl giān dhiān.੧.

 

Listen to (mant = mantra) instructions of (sant = saints) devotees of (har-i) the Almighty to obtain (giaan) awareness, and pay (dhiaan) attention to Naam/virtues and commands of (gupaal) the Almighty Sustainor. 1

 

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗਾਇ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਇ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਮੋਹਨਾ ॥ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਦਇਆ ਮਇਆ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ ਤਜਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਸਗਲ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੨॥੧॥੩੮॥

hiradai gōbind gāi charan kamal prīti lāi dīn daiāl mōhanā. kripāl daiā maiā dhāri. nānaku māgai nāmu dānu. taji mōhu bharamu sagal abhimānu.੨.੧.੩੮.

 

(Gaaey = sing) praise virtues of (gobind) the Master of the world/Creator, and (laaey) have (preet-i) love for (kamal) lotus (charan) feet of God, i.e. be in obedience to God; (mohana) fascinating Master is (daiaal) kind to, i.e. supports (deen = poor) the hapless.

O (kripaal) kind Master, please (dhaar-i) bestow (daiaa) mercy and (maiaa) kindness; fifth Nanak (maagai/maa’ngai) begs for (daan-u = alms) the benediction of awareness of Naam/Divine virtues and commands.

So as to (taj-i) give up (sagal) all (moh-u) attachments to the world-play, (bharam) misconceptions – causing to stray from You, and (abhimaan) vanity – the impediments to finding You. 2. 1. 38.

ਕਾਨੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਹਨ ਮਲਨ ਦਹਨ ਲਹਨ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਆਨ ਨਹੀ ਉਪਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

kānaṛā mahalā ੫. prabh kahan malan dahan lahan gur milē ān nahī upāu.੧. rahāu.

 

Composition of the fifth Guru in Raga Kaanrra. (Kahan) saying/recounting virtues of (prabh) the Almighty (dahan) destroys (malan = dirt) vices from the mind; and one gets awareness of Divine virtues on (miley) finding the guru; there is no (aan) other (upaau) way. 1.

(Rahaau) dwell on this and contemplate.

ਤਟਨ ਖਟਨ ਜਟਨ ਹੋਮਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਡੰਡਧਾਰ ਸੁਆਉ ॥੧॥

taṭan khaṭan jaṭan hōman nāhī ḍaṇḍadhār suāu.੧.

 

People go to (tattan = river banks) take paths at pilgrim centres, perform (khattan) six acts – giving/receiving charity, receiving/imparting knowledge, performing/getting done yagnas, (jattan) keeping matted hair  or (ddandd-dhaar-i = carry staff) wandering like yogis wit staff in hand; none of them serves (suaau) the purpose of finding the Almighty. 1.

 

ਜਤਨ ਭਾਂਤਨ ਤਪਨ ਭ੍ਰਮਨ ਅਨਿਕ ਕਥਨ ਕਥਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਥਾਹ ਪਾਈ ਠਾਉ ॥ ਸੋਧਿ ਸਗਰ ਸੋਧਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭਜੁ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥੨॥੩੯॥
jatan bhāntan tapan bhraman anik kathan kathatē nahī thāh pāī ṭhāu. sōdhi sagar sōdhanā sukhu nānakā bhaju nāu.੨.੨.੩੯.

 

People perform (jatan = efforts) acts of various (bhaa’ntan) types like (tapan) austerities, (bhraman) wanderings, (kathatey = saying) delivering (anik) numerous (kathan) discourses; (thaah = depth) awareness of virtues of the Almighty is (nahi) not (paaee) obtained by these – God is not found within this way.

Having (sodh-i) studied (sagar/sagal) all (sodhna) methods, I found that (sukh-u) peace is obtained – by finding God within; and to find God, one should (bhaj-u) praise and emulate (naau) Naam/Divine virtues and commands, says fifth Nanak. 2. 2. 39.
